Your ability to talk, drive with one hand, and film with the other are amazing. When I get to a tough climb with both hands on the radio I can't even talk while driving.
Yup, I can relate. I just run an RTR Ascender, and it can't clear many of the steep lines that others can do in their belly dragging competition trucks. But, once in a while, the added height is an advantage, and my truck will clear lines that the fancy comp trucks can't.
First time I saw a Capra running was with some guys with highly modified rigs. The Capra held its own, and ran pretty much all the same lines those trucks.
I have purchased one a couple of weeks ago. Pretty nice vehicle out of the box. I had one issue out of the box, It was missing a screw in the front steering servo so when I took it out of the box the servo was sideways. I had to take servo off and add a screw in the servo mount. I also greased up all the gears and added metal bead lock rims with hyrax tires and a little bit a weight but other than that I will leave rest stock for now.
I prefer the Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster Sport 16T 540 with a 10t pinion on 3S in my Capra. Running Hot Racing OD gears and Vitavon brass portal covers. Very good torque density while still having decent wheelspeed. Getting ready to change out to a Crawlmaster Sport 15T 550 with the 10t pinion as soon as my Spare Time Hobbies high-clearance skid arrives.
I been really happy with my capra. I got it as a kit. Running hyrax's with ssd rims and a 1800kv hobbywing axe system on 3s 1800mah lectron pro lipo. Havnt gotten a chance to get it on a crawler course yet because of the whole covid crap, but I've found several rock clusters open to the public and a few trails around me and it just blows my trx4&trx6 out of the water. I been really happy with the agility and the run time. Its becoming my favorite crawler by far. Honestly looking at getting the new Bomber next. Hopefully soon I can get it on a few courses near me. Can't wait. If you want to use the same shocks, I would try some "soft soft" purple spring rate springs from axial. Cant remember the part number right off hand, but it made a huge difference in getting the truck down lower and leveling out the links and lowering the COG.
I have to thank you for this review. I have the red rtr as well and always wondered how that would perform compared to a kit build. I have a 1080 esc and an 11 tooth pinion on mine. Still stock motor but greased the portals, diffs, and trans as all were bone dry. As for tires, they stick great on the rough granite around here but on anything smooth they give it up. Have hyraxes waiting for my wheels to arrive so that should improve things. Glad the rig performed well and looking forward to seeing your upgrade path. Subscribed and liked!
Well OK then, I do like the Capra too. I think I really like the way you tested it. Purely objective and honest. You have to change things and customize it to make the Capra even better. I'll be following your build. Do it to it "Dude". I'm lov'n it. Thanks. 😎
Please make a video on what you would do to it and how it does before and after. I have a rtr and the dig servo died in 2. Days so I used the ecopower 640t with a servo horn mod. Works way better.

VERY enjoyable to watch you run the 'EXACT' same Capra I have. After 5 months of driving mine in my 'rock garden' consisting of natural indigenous rocks from the So California desert I have found the tires not only very 'scale' in appearance but give perfunctory traction and have worn extremely well with DAILY driving. My RTR Capra is infinitely more enjoyable for me to drive now that the servo plug for the DIG has been disconnected and the DIG zip-tied in constant 4WD. If I ever need to replace the motor I'm planning on the Titan motor found in the Traxxas TRX-4. I find them very torquey, good wheel speed, they only cost $20 and they come with the wires and bayonets attached so I don't need to buy a soldering Iron and appurtenances to replace it.
@@ExocagedRC I have seen that in other videos you have made. Sharper turns would be nice. I don't, however, want/need a huge amount of "overdrive". More than 3 to 5% would not be needed in my 'rock garden', and I don't want to stress the drivetrain.

And another review stated the portals didn't work with some other wheels, so it may be hard to use wheels you've already got, or need to buy new wheels in general to fit it. Plus the amount of time it supposedly takes to things apart to access the electronics seems like it'd be a time consuming truck to work on. Especially if the dig servo is flaky. I'd say it's worth more like $300 rtr, or do like the gen8 axe lim edition for $500 where it came with the nicer brushless system and nice transmitter for that rtr. If the price point is going to be that high, I'd expect a little better performance/components included. Even the kit at $330 is still pretty pricy compared to other competent kits out there. I want to see the appeal of the rock racer styles, but this one doesn't do it for me. The new Bomber review I'd seen seemed like a much more capable truck right out of the box and for the same price. This one just doesn't do it for me for the price.
Well it’s not a bomber and getting to things can be time consuming however we always customize these things to fit our style. Even the simpler trucks get modded a lot. I do like the new bomber and for some reason I now want an SMT 10. LoL
I have the Capra kit and Bomber kit. I can say for the information you have your opinion is 100% correct on all points. The capra kit and rtr are are little more expensive Here is my take on these points: 1) One of the reasons the capra is more expensive is because its build in the same factory and same materials Horizon build their racing kits (high quality), Also complete new product from scratch. 2) I have hundreds of miles on my Bomber and compare to my Capra is more capable BUT on specific places. Not all around more capable. Also capra looks almost the same as Bomber just smaller. So better to have only one - capra OR bomber. 3) On the trails and in Mountains the bomber is better, but on pure rocks and narrower places Capra is better. 4) the new Bomber is better version of the RTR bomber, not the Bomber kit! So Capra rtr is higher quality and parts then the new bomber. The new bomber also have dog bones in front. This is a must have upgade that is around $30 for universals. Also the tires of the bomber are not better then what you get in the capra. Both need upgrades. The bomber rtr need more of them. So the choice is yours, and not one is clear choice from specs alone. Hope this info helps you.
To me if you can do 360's and not flip overm then the suspension is too stiff, and the tires are not hooking up good, just sliding and loosing traction.. Suspension should be soft, to load weight and increase your traction..
@@ExocagedRC No matter how high or how low the center of gravity is, a slide means less traction.. You can't have good traction and slide at the same time.. A lower center of gravity only means that you can corner faster.. But even then if pushed to extreme it will tip over if you have enough weight transfer and good traction or with less weight transfer less loading of weight and less traction causing a slide.. Sliding is good for hot dogging but not so good for crawling, where traction is a premium..
I think you should really focus your channel on really testing and showing how upgrades are not always the best option. I know that goes against everything a RUclipsr works for which is money and free stuff but I bet the 1st person who does will get more money from viewers and people who actually want the truth. And companies that truly make products that work will pay premium to be on your channel.

Better grease the ring and pinion
Yeah I haven’t had a chance to open it up yet.
To me if you can do 360's and not flip overm then the suspension is too stiff, and the tires are not hooking up good, just sliding and loosing traction.. Suspension should be soft, to load weight and increase your traction..
Yeah true but if the center of gravity is low enough you can have all that and still get donuts.
Jim Richard power overcomes traction. Plus I don’t do cyclones or donuts on high traction surfaces.
It’s sounds very grindy😬
I think that was pretty fast for a stock crawler
it is
The fallen tires axial has started using are garbage
Personally I’m not a fan of the dig feature. It feels like cheating to me
I think you should really focus your channel on really testing and showing how upgrades are not always the best option. I know that goes against everything a RUclipsr works for which is money and free stuff but I bet the 1st person who does will get more money from viewers and people who actually want the truth. And companies that truly make products that work will pay premium to be on your channel.
Anyone that reads this comment will suddenly want to spend his stimulus money on an RC car
I already did lol
I enjoy morning wake-ups here in SoCal from all the way across the country where you are in Florida
What stimulus money
yes but I would go for a Gmade R1
