    This video is an introduction to ionic bonding, which is one type of chemical bonding. Ionic bonds hold together metal and nonmetal atoms. In ionic bonding, electrons are transferred from a metal atom to a nonmetal atom, creating ions. These ions have opposite charge, so they stick together.

    I love how you assume we don’t know it and go to the basics I wish all chemistry teachers did that they think we understand all the terminology they’re using and know we can’t ask them in class as we’ll feel stupid

      I mean u can’t start with the basics again every year, but the teachers should make u all feel comfortable(so u can ask any questions, even if there stupid). On time my teacher was so happy because I asked a question. Just ask them there is no shame.

      I noticed that in the beginning of the video. I have a question. In the video you mentioned that "Chloride" is the name of a Chlorine atom with a negative charge. You said that that's what sets the names chlorine and chloride apart. So my question is, does that mean that the chlorine atom in Hydrogen Chloride has a negative charge or is a negative ion? If so, how is that possible that the type of bond between the hydrogen and chlorine atoms is covalent?

I remember being at school and switching off because I couldn't understand what was being taught as important details were left out and that left gaps in building understanding. These lessons are brilliant because they are clear and give the necessary details which makes it easier to grasp and that builds a desire to learn more. • @chemistrywithdrh6514

      Sandy, you are correct - a chlorine atom is smaller than a sodium atom, but a chloride ion is bigger than a sodium ion (because the sodium has lost its outermost electron shell when it makes an ion). So a solid plastic model cannot really show the sizes. But it is an excellent video nonetheless.

    • @riinuansper2690
      @riinuansper2690 10 лет назад

      Actually when Cl recieves an electron from Na, than Cl changes from an atom to an anion and it gets much bigger in size during this change, because electrons repel, and when there are more electrons, the electrons will try to stay as far away from each other as possible. So there is an actual error in this video,because they drew the Cl atom about the same size as the anion...
      Anions are bigger than the corresponding atoms; cations are smaller than the corresponding atoms.

      Sandy Keeton Chlorine is bigger due to its electronegativity.Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract the electrons towards itself in a chemical bond.Electronegativity of Sodium is 0.9 and electronegativity of Chlorine is 3.0

    I wish I had a teacher like you when I was in school. Now I watch your videos so that I can teach Chemistry to my kids :-) You are simply awesome the way you explain. You do a great service to the community.

    Um does sodium give it a electron because it needs to balance out the positive charges ( cation ) and the negative charges (anion) so they can become one?

    Why doesn't the name of the sodium change also? ;)

    If the Sodium lost a charge (-1) and the Chlorine gained a charge (+1), shouldn't the charges be switched?

    • @ExplainIttoMe_1
      @ExplainIttoMe_1 6 лет назад

      Sodium is losing an electron, so it has one less negative charge, which makes it positively charged (+1). Chlorine gains an electron, so it has one more negative charge, which makes it negatively charged (-1). Hope that helps.

    Over 7 years later, these videos are the only reason I've maintained good grades in Chemistry. Currently studying for finals, which is really stressful with the terrible "textbook" we have for online learning. Your method of teaching really helps me absorb far more information in a short video than reading over some text and a few diagrams over an over.

    I've been watching your videos since 2018 and I swear you're one of the big reasons why I passed all my chemistry class lol. Now, I'm a college student and I'm still here. Your videos are so helpful and informative.
