  • A chemical bond is a lasting attraction between atoms, ions or molecules that enables the formation of chemical compounds. The bond may result from the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions as in ionic bonds or through the sharing of electrons as in covalent bonds.

I know too much about quantum mechanics (never thought that I would) to not chime in and say that this is an incorrect model for what's really happening, though it works fine under most conditions and for most chemistry calculations.

I recently retired. Thanks for your contribution to me finally grasping the bonds which I last learned about some 50 years ago!
But... is the Na atom which gave one electron to Cl still Na??? Is the Cl atom which accepted one electron from Na still Cl? Of course the new molecule created this way has completely new properties, but shouldn't we keep reminding ourselves that yes there was a separate Na and Cl before they bonded, but once bonded, shouldn't we call them some "remnants of the original atoms"? It's just convenient to call them NaCl, but the bond changed them to such extent that they have very different properties.
But I have to admit, if I had such nice simulation when I was 15, I'd probably became a professional chemical engineer. ❤

If you are on a higher level of chemistry, you’ll knoe that this is not how it works because it completely ignores quantum mechanics, hut for beginners, it must amazing and really helpful for imagination. Only one type, it is not the best to say less stable than a single bond and then show carbon dioxide which is very stable.
