After the "S-Cells" revelation, I think that every saiyan has had the ability to go ssj, but because Frieza was scared of the ssj and that he would kill anyone who got too strong, then no one was able to reach it.
Well, that's an interesting way from Toriyama to save time. Who would guess something born from such a simple idea could become this iconic. If there's any way for Goku and other Saiyans to get stronger, I remember back then Toriyama said this in an interview : "Super Saiyan 2 and 3 are nothing more than powered-up variations of Super Saiyan. After the fight with Beerus, Goku realized that mastering his normal state and Super Saiyan would raise his level more and sap less strength, so I think he probably won’t become Super Saiyan 2 or 3 any more."
Actually, this type of stories are not that uncommon. For example, the iconic headbands from "Naruto" have a very similar origin. And it's not always for cutting corners, but also to work around other types of problem. For example, in "Return of the Jedi", Luke's new lightsaber was originally going to be blue again (there's even a trailer that shows it), but they changed it to green because Lucas' team couldn't make the blade to stand out of Tatooine's blue sky. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.
Silent Hill also pulled this off. The iconic fog in the earlier games was originally absent, but it was added in due to technical limitations on draw distance. The end result was both thematically and gameplay appropriate.
Here's my comment. Do you think Dragon Ball would be better if Toriyama stopped forgetting things? Because he seems like the most Alzheimer's manga writer of all time. Maybe there'd be hell of a lot less plot holes.. Maybe he forgets things because he pulls things out of his ass as a way of coming up with stories.. I mean, super saiyan was pretty much just something he pulled out of his ass to save time. (not dissing the series or anything, I actually like this series.). But do you think that Toriyama is lucky that all of his "pulling out of his ass" turns out to be good material? Is he only a good writer out of sheer luck and circumstance?'
I think his creative process may simply be less detail-oriented and more a playground for creative concepts. That quality carries through to his writing and the anime, and to a degree, I actually like it. It's part of what gives Dragonball its charm. In other words, simply because it followed a different creative path than you may have liked doesn't make it an ass pull. There exists no one path to express creativity, and that's a good thing. Along those lines, working within a series of demanding constraints (ie. release deadlines), and coming up with viable creative solutions that make the most of those restrictions is generally the mark of very talented individuals.
That might be why Toyotaro is handling the major parts of the manga now. The guy's a promoted fanboy and probably knows more about the Dragonball universe than Toriyama does at this point, haha.
VauschthePuca I this doesnt excuse Toriyama though. there are plenty of other anime base manga that also had their time constraints and amazing pressure, One Piece being an example.. especially with the Big Mom arch only being about 10 chapters ahead of the anime. and yet they've done a glorious job of sticking with creative writing and closing up a billion plot holes. it makes Toriyama seem like the Doctor House of manga authors to me when i see all his interviews implying that he just doesnt friggin care anymore.
Here's a secret, being detail oriented and not having plot holes isn't good writing. Being entertaining with good characters, pacing, and themes is good writing. If you are spending more time worrying about internal consistency than thematic consistency in a serialized work you are going to drag.
After watching a bit of GT and much of Super, I personally think that SSG should be a form that's exclusive to Goku and Goku alone. He's the only one who has consistently trained with King Kai and other beings who hold a similar status. It makes more sense that Vegeta would have access to SS4 (despite it not being cannon?) because of who he is and how he trains. Not only that (and I'm aware that he doesn't have his tail) but he was able to control his ape form back in the Saiyan Saga(?). If the story behind acquiring SS4 were cannon, that form should be exclusive to Vegeta. Gohan should (and does, if memory serves me right) be the only one to have Mystic (a form I'm not too knowledged about). All of these forms make sense for the characters, and it's so much better than giving them all the same general thing. I would honestly like to see this difference because these characters might work better in their specific form, and it's so much better than being outclassed by each other (so to speak) despite sharing the same general bracket. Lastly, I would love to see specific abilities and benefits that come with their respective forms. For example, (and I think this is the case) SSG would be the best form for ki control and ki attacks would be devastating, to say the least. SS4 would give incredible strength and speed increase while Mystic would have its own unique and specific benefits. It's something I've thought about for a very long time…
John Cornelius yeah I agree. It would give the characters more depth if they had individuality. Only difference is in hairstyles slightly. In the movies, Vegeta's hair is lighter and Goku is more golden. But it would be dope if they went with your idea. Of course the haters are gonna come through and hate on GT. Like always....
Actually Masako, Toriyama actually meant the Super Saiyan form was originally gonna be 10 times more powerful then what he was capable of (Kaioken times 20), which means Super Saiyan was originally gonna be a 200 times multiplier, but since Goku didn't TOTALLY annihilate Freeza (ie, Goku still took a lot of damage in the fight) it was more like a 50 times multiplier!
Malucs they didn't scale the power down for marketing, it just seemed like it made more sense, if it WAS a 200 times multiplier, Goku would of defeated Freeza with MUCH more ease than he did
In response to Masako's parting question, one of the things I love about DB Super is the sort-of return to Dragon Ball's sense of adventure--they got away a little bit form the endless power one-upmanship that marked DBZ. You see the concept of divine ki adding a new dimension to fights, Roshi teaching the sealing technique (even if it was in vain), and the little tricks Hit, Frost, and the werewolf use to get over on their opponents in the tournaments. Most recently is the value of guile and strategy in the upcoming tournament, for which Krillin (who has been left in the dust with regards to power level), has had a return to glory. The 'power up to a new form' convention only carries so far, it's little things like the above that make conflicts more interesting.
I always thought it would have been really interesting if Goku was the only one to ever become Super Saiyan on the show. I remember watching Toonami when it happened. I was still in school, probably like 5th grade or something. I was an avid fan of the show and watched it every day around 4 or 5 oclock. I watched the Namek/Frieza saga hearing all about the legendary Super Saiyan transformation and the build up to it was extreme. it was like a godly near unobtainable status, something of folklore, totally scary and beautiful at the same time. When Frieza did the unthinkable and killed Krillin right in front of Goku, pushing Goku into a state of bewilderment, despair and unadulterated rage, he did it, he let out one almighty scream and golden light exploded from him, and a godly creature that bore his appearance, with icy blue eyes that burn with hate stood in his place. It was a really powerful moment, everything, from the tone, to the shock of the bystanders to the look of sheer terror on Frieza's face as his greatest nightmare stood right there before him, more powerful than he thought conceivable. I don't think anyone else on the entire show should have been able to do it. As much as I like Trunks, and as awesome as his entrance is, it totally leeches off of the coolness of Goku's transformation. Then Vegeta finally did it, and that was okay and all, then Gohan did it (though to be fair, he was the FIRST to show signs of Super Saiyan power). That was all cool and fine and dandy, but then kid Trunks and Goku's out of nowhere useless son Goten did it like it was nothing, causing Vegeta to make the most accurate summary of this overwinded comment I'm making, he called it a "Super Saiyan bargain sale". It's like the specialty and epicness of the Super Saiyan transformation had been ruined as the show progressed. The Super Saiyan transformation is something that could only be achieved through the experience of true despair and anger, something that wasn't achieved through excessive amounts of training, but a power that could only be tapped when it was NEEDED, not when it was wanted. A Saiyan had to undergo a massive amount of pressure to become so fucked up in the head just to get to that state. Then we got Super Saiyan 2, which was lazy in design, and Super Saiyan 3, which is retarded looking, and in GT we got Super Saiyan 4, which while unique in design, is just no... Now we got this Super Saiyan God bullshit which is super redundant and the design for it is the laziest thing I ever seen in my life. I'm okay with having a million transformations if the design is at least entertaining, but turning the regular Super Saiyan hair blue is just amateur. The worst thing is I feel like it's gonna go through the whole Super Saiyan transformation sequence all over again but with minty blue hair instead of gold. Please Stop.
Toasty Kitten The Kaioken is more of boost then a transfromation. The Kaioken as is only temporary, and is hell on your not only stamina but also your body. Ssj can also be not good for your body either, but it has more beneficial the then the temporary Kaioken. Great Ape= 10+endurance and size Kaioken=10 to 20 however is not a transfromation, and is a difficult move to use, not even Goku fully mastered it and has after battle side affects. ssj=50 though also difficult to master has no negative effects for your body in the long run (as long as you don't have a virus), do note this is just OG ssj though.
I understand that the SSJ Multiplier is 50x, but if Akira Toriyama had intended it to be 10x, then he would have half the power that he had using the Kaioken at 20x. Not really Frieza whomping material.
Not really, if the SSJ would be 10x then the kaioken would be less, its 20 something would be like "hey do you know that kaoken x20? its like 20¨% power boost" wich when compared to something that augmented his power ten-times it would look reaaly weak
Toasty Kitten Good point, but remember Frezia was holding back like Goku. After the spirit bomb Frezia was 50% of his power then went to his 100% "form". I don't have Frezia's power level on hand right now, but it was higher then base Goku, Goku needed a much larger use the 20x power boost.
MegaRyuki another, good point. But King Kia said that a 10x or 20x could be dangerous. If he did it over and over it would most likely kill him in a WAY worse way then that virus ever would. Better to have a Form then constantly using a move that could kill you if over used. Also MARKETING! lol

One of my favourite Toriyama anecdotes is when he walked about what happened to Trunks & Gotens tails he apparently replied that he'd forgotten Saiyans had tails...
It's funny: when the show finally got to that part, the only thing my young mind thought was "OOOOH, that's where the idea of Super Sonic came from!" It all came together.
Surprisingly, the thing that has me really excited for the Tournament of Power is the emphasis in skill and tactics exemplified in including Krillin and Roshi. I wish the series had taken more the track instead of just "they're stronger". Sure, Freeza was super powerful, but what if the Androids just had the whole "They are machines and never get tired" thing, where the longer they fought, the worse it got for the heroes, with the Androids even using stall tactics to take advantage of that, and Cell being worse because not only was he limitless(right?) but he had all the heroes skills built in(including regeneration), and then Buu, while more power full still, was mainly a threat because he was, as far as anyone could tell, completely indestructible. So... Yeah. I dunno.
You can make all your SSJ3, your Fusions, your Blues and Roses and Ultra Instinct....but no one will deny the Awesomeness of a Basic Super Saiyan. It was once seen as the ultimate method of power but nowadays it STILL has a place, being a great multiplier to someone like Goku who’s already gotten much stronger than Namek and Cell games. As an answer to your other “does it matter anymore” video, dear Masako, YES it still matters and it’ll never get old anytime. It’s become a right of passage!!
My only gripe with Dragon Ball is how the characters seem to go thru the same power scaling as eachother when it could be so much more interesting. If vegeta didn't lose his tail and kept improving oozaru or more stuff like turning majiin to keep up. If Gohan explored the gods power instead of Goku. Goku pushing the limits of what a super saiyan is. Krillin continuing to innovate and really demonstrate ki control and finding ways to keep up (kinda like how they seem to be going in super). Piccolo could use more "magical" techniques in tandem with ki blasts. Exploring different schools of martial arts and ki through Tien and Chaotzu. Less huge ki blasts and more unique ways for the characters to shine
I thought the reason Goten and Trunks(and Gohan) had an easier time getting to Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 were because they were half-bloods. Something about them being half didn't require the immense amount of time and effort required to reach that legendary form. And since no Saiyan in the past had mixed babies, they never knew the dormant power that lay within.
I think the concept of Super Saiyan is cool, but I have a couple of problems with it. 1. The design is underwhelming. It's hardly a transformation when the most noticeable change is that a character's hair changes color and spikes up. It isn't nearly as amazing as it could have been if it wasn't design in such a way simple to save time. I came up with a design for Super Saiyan where Goku's hair spikes up, but remains the same color, they grow hair around their entire body, like SSJ4 but it's the same color, and they have to have their tail to reach the next stage where their hair becomes golden. 2. The concept ended up hurting the supporting cast and their viability. My favorite Saiyan character is Vegeta solely because of how much character development he's gone through. Of all the characters, he's gotten enough attention to really bring out the best change in his character. But when it comes down to the Super Saiyan transformation and what it brought along with it, I became incredibly disappointed in the human cast as they got pushed further and further to the side in favor of marketing more yellow haired monkey men. The humans have more interesting techniques and a plethora of potential of their own, yet Toriyama seems to have forgotten that the human characters could even fight. Hell even Piccolo who Toriyama stated is his favorite character doesn't get to do nearly as much beyond being a babysitter because he can't keep up with the Super Saiyans and their bullshit multipliers. 3. All the stages and forms are kind of stupid. Every time the Saiyan characters need more power, it manifests itself in the form of a new transformation. Which is dumb, instead of mastering just one form and bringing out the best of it along with mastering new techniques, they just get a new form that makes them stronger by default. There's hardly any creativity in any of the forms as it is. I was never able to tell Super Saiyan's 1 and 2 apart, because the only difference is electricity. Some could argue that Super Saiyan 2 is just Super Saiyan using their maximum power. And then Super Saiyan 3 is really long hair and you lose your eyebrows. That's it. It looks kind of cool, but it's just longer hair. And now we've got red haired Super Saiyans, blue haired, pink haired, whatever Super Saiyan rage is supposed to be, and any character who isn't a Saiyan or an antagonist has yet to get a transformation of their own. Just, shitty writing in my opinion. It's only acceptable to a lot of people because it's Dragon Ball, but nobody would put up with this sort of character under-utilization in many other series'.

To be fair, SSJ2 may as well not even be a thing. It's basically SSJ1++, and really always has. It looks the same, it's used as the default SSJ transformation these days and it was almost entirely skipped in the actual story. We were given a ret-con about how Gohan's amazing power in the Cell Saga was actually SSJ2 and not just him being a really powerful SSJ1 then we're immediately introduced to SSJ3. Watching the anime, I thought I'd missed a whole story arc when that happened. It's the same thing with Blue. "Yeah, the red Super Sayian God thing doesn't matter. Blue is basically the same thing except you can't regenerate." And frankly, I'm happier for it. I like Dragon Ball's history of transformations, but I like it when they all serve some kind of purpose. SSJ 1 and 2 - collectively Super Saiyan - serve as the regular transformation for fighting "mortal" enemies and for showing off. SSJB is the transformation used when serious power is needed, and it always comes a narrative "Woah!" from the crowd. I'm not a fan of new techniques outright replacing old ones, which makes me really happy that the Kaio-Ken seems here to stay. I strongly suspect Goku will eventually merge SSJB with the Kaio-Ken to produce a brand new form more similar to the original Super Saiyan God, but that's ultimately just a guess.
are we to expect the tournament could lead to a darker twist. If the High Priest is behind it, hypothetically speaking, if he was able to manipulate the omni kings to allow combatants to die in a fight to the finish. without the ability to be wished back EVER! this could be that sense of regret and weighted guilt the series could use to have goku understand what he has done, to feel the responsibility of his closest friends die due to him pushing them to join him and knowing they would never come back. In my theory it could add more drama and more stakes the series could use, and it could be a way for some characters from gt to return like the dead characters meeting Pikkon or such.
Every time I hear things like this, I just want to go insane and make a comic book or something on the fly to see how far I get with it. This was a nice video. Oh, and it would have been interesting to see a base form Goku continue to train and never reach Super Saiyan. What if he was stronger because he never even realized he could have a quick buff like that?
In the dub, Vegeta was explained that his heart was pure. Pure as in pure evil. Or at least that's what he said. And technically the legend never said the Saiyan had to be pure good to achieve the transformation, so i guess that explanation could technically work
I'm glad to see someone besides me thinking that way; I'd always taken the "pure heart" thing to be a fluke on Goku's part. He said he "had" a "pure heart, awakened by rage"; no one even mentions necessity of that quality until Kuririn sees Vegeta transform, so...Unreliable Expositor?
I love the Super Saiyan transformation concept in it of itself. In learning that SSJ was intended to be a 10x multiplier, it sounded to me that Toriyama was probably thinking that SSJ was a humanoid form of the Oozaru in concept. As for other ways Goku could have gotten stronger? Hmmmm...I think they finally covered every version of fan-desired power boosts they could when combining SSJ with his other techniques! So yeah! So far, so good! ^^
whenever I think about achieving the form, I think there's some desperacy mixed in there too. the other things are obvious, but the initial transformation happens at times when the character needs it, when they have no other way to overcome their opponent. 3 could have easily been 2, as 2 didn't change much in design and there was no real anticipation for 3, apart from writing into a corner on buu's power
I'm genuinely curious on what he was thinking during Gohan transformation in the Cell Games? If he wrote it as him becoming SSJ2 only to forget about it months or even years later i can accept that. I do know you, a Gohan fan (like myself) and would have something interesting to say about the matter.
Golden Transformation thou seems overall a thing in Japan and the number 7. 7 Dragonballs and Supersaiyajin. Sonic Super form and 7 Emeralds. Just found it interessting both are simliar in that. Think there are more examples like that but unsure now.
My rationalization of how Saiyans other than Goku achieved the SSJ transformation is the ability to read Ki. Reading Ki is not just about knowing your opponent's power level, reading Ki also reads your opponent's intentions allowing you to predict their actions: - in the Saiyan Arc, Gohan had trouble detecting the Saibamen's movement until Piccolo reminded him to follow their energy. - in the Android Arc, Goku did not avoid Trunks' initial attack because Goku _"felt"_ that Trunks would not do it (and Trunks did not) Reading Ki is also a gateway to your opponent's mind since fighting is the body and mind working together. So basically if Vegeta never saw the SSJ, never knowing how it _"felt",_ he would never have achieved the form. Vegeta *needed* to see it firsthand. Goku acquiring the SSJ form on his own is still amazing and something others most likely could not do. Goku showed other Saiyans the way.
This discussion left me with an interesting thought. What if toriyama never made super saiyan, and no kind of transformation of its kind existed in dbz? What would dbz be like today? What would the impact on anime as a whole be?
Is it me or did SSJ goku in the Frieza arc had more like white blond-ish hair with thick locs than when he arrived on earth? Did Toriyama changed the appearance? Super Saiyan looked so different on Namek.
One thing about that power increase: if it were only a tenfold increase, the only effect would be that it doesn't require the mental focus that Kaioken does. By that point Goku was already using the x10 Kaioken, which increases his power tenfold already. (Well, 11, actually - the 1x Kaioken doubles his power, and each level above that adds the same amount again, so using x10 Kaioken makes his power 10 times normal from the kaioken plus his original power). So that fiftyfold increase is really only fivefold over what Goku's already capable of with previously introduced boosting techniques. Still definitely significant, but not as ludicrous as what "fiftyfold increase" normally suggests, given the Kaioken is locked out of the standard SSJ forms.
Can we get a Ki attacks explained video? Like, whats the difference between a galick gun and a kamehameha? why is a kienzan more dangerous? why do beams seem to mostly just push people around, but sometimes burn them up?
All the ki techniques are different in the way the energy is collected and how it is shaped. Most attacks use internal energy, while other attacks (spirit bomb) use external energy. The form of the energy can be modified so that it can be sharp, like Trunk's spirit sword or flowing like a Kamehameha.
well in toriyama's defense of forgetting 2, super saiyan 2 didnt have much screen time and it was close enough of a look to 1, so when he designed 3 to look vastly different i cant really blame him for forgetting
"bargain sale" is not from the dubs. In the original japanese version Vegeta actually says "bargain sale" in english. That scene is available on youtube in japanese if you want to check it out.
Goten was shown to turn into a super saiyan first when chi chi was pushing him during training. Unless I'm wrong which is possible. So anger in some way shape or form is still part of attainng it.
I like to think they materialize their Ki into Hair dye which is biologcly attracted to Sayain Hair, making them blond XD. That would explain why the color washes away in sync with their aura sometimes(like when Vegeta knocks Goku out), and why SSJBlue is blue. My head canon anyway.
Whenever you think about what Super Saiyan Blue is, it's a Super Saiyan, within a Super Saiyan god.. which is a god.. within a Super Saiyan.. which means, that it's technically a Super Saiyan within a Super Saiyan within a Super Saiyan... SAIYANCEPTION!!!
I'm pretty sure SSJ2 wasn't called "SSJ2" until SSJ3 came along. Before then it was just called "A SSJ that has ascended past a SSJ." Sort of like 100% Perfect Cell or %100 Form Frieza. Basically your max form at its full potential.
Actually my favorite transformation in fiction is the Spider-man to man-spider transformation in the Spider-man animated series. Something about that storyline was just so cool.

Actually, Masako, the argument for the pure of heart working with Vegeta was it doesn't explicitly note what it must be pure of; Thus, a heart of pure rage (or ego) would qualify just as much as a heart pure of hate. They had a lot of answers to things like that because they wanted it to be true, lol.
What I want to does the 50x power level also mean 50x everything else. Can you lift 50 times more weight, run 50 times faster, see 50 times sharper, smell 50 times further, hear 50 times further.. or does many different things with 2-10x multipliers combine into the 50x overall power level increase :D
You have to remember that the Ozaru form gives you a x10 power boost. So having the Super Saiyan form give a x10 boost also would make it pretty useless since going ape would easily just work as well.
And don't forget that Toriyama also forgot about Launch, which is why she seemingly disappeared without a trace after the saiyan saga. He also forgot Saiyans had Tails until soeone pointed it out and he made hte excuse for Trunks and Goten that they had theirs removed at birth.

To be fair about forgetting what super saiyan 2 was, it was literally just a bit more spiky SS1 with a few sparks, hardly a visible transformation at all.
I've got a question for you Masako, whatever happened to Goku's Power Pole? That was his signature weapon in DragonBall, and it had so much utility. Why would Goku just abandon it?
a multiplier of x10 wouldn't make sense because Goku was already constantly using the kaioken x10 and still struggling against Freeza. he pulled of kaioken x20 for a sec but it did nothing, and freeza was still using a very small amount of his power. i think x50 would have been near minimum to beat him.
I'm just here waiting for Pan to obtain this transformation. I know most people don't care for her because of GT, but it's just a next generational thing.
Yeah, actually kid Gohan was the only one who changed significantly in his SSJ2 form. Goku only had a couple of flocks on his fringe getting spikier (and you have to pay attention in order to notice that one), and Vegeta not even that. Apart from that, the only clear thing of the transformation were the blue lightning bolts around the body, and those weren't that visible in the anime.
I'd like to see a villain in Super who some how has the ability to disable Goku from turning super saiyan. So during the fight when Goku is out matched and would turn super saiyan to even the playing field, he can't, and has to work through that to defeat the opponent

After the "S-Cells" revelation, I think that every saiyan has had the ability to go ssj, but because Frieza was scared of the ssj and that he would kill anyone who got too strong, then no one was able to reach it.

Well, that's an interesting way from Toriyama to save time. Who would guess something born from such a simple idea could become this iconic.
If there's any way for Goku and other Saiyans to get stronger, I remember back then Toriyama said this in an interview : "Super Saiyan 2 and 3 are nothing more than powered-up variations of Super Saiyan. After the fight with Beerus, Goku realized that mastering his normal state and Super Saiyan would raise his level more and sap less strength, so I think he probably won’t become Super Saiyan 2 or 3 any more."
Actually, this type of stories are not that uncommon. For example, the iconic headbands from "Naruto" have a very similar origin. And it's not always for cutting corners, but also to work around other types of problem.
For example, in "Return of the Jedi", Luke's new lightsaber was originally going to be blue again (there's even a trailer that shows it), but they changed it to green because Lucas' team couldn't make the blade to stand out of Tatooine's blue sky.
As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.
Silent Hill also pulled this off. The iconic fog in the earlier games was originally absent, but it was added in due to technical limitations on draw distance. The end result was both thematically and gameplay appropriate.
Ironically, the corner cutter became the cornerSTONE of the entire franchise.
Here's my comment. Do you think Dragon Ball would be better if Toriyama stopped forgetting things? Because he seems like the most Alzheimer's manga writer of all time. Maybe there'd be hell of a lot less plot holes.. Maybe he forgets things because he pulls things out of his ass as a way of coming up with stories.. I mean, super saiyan was pretty much just something he pulled out of his ass to save time. (not dissing the series or anything, I actually like this series.). But do you think that Toriyama is lucky that all of his "pulling out of his ass" turns out to be good material? Is he only a good writer out of sheer luck and circumstance?'
I think his creative process may simply be less detail-oriented and more a playground for creative concepts. That quality carries through to his writing and the anime, and to a degree, I actually like it. It's part of what gives Dragonball its charm. In other words, simply because it followed a different creative path than you may have liked doesn't make it an ass pull. There exists no one path to express creativity, and that's a good thing.
Along those lines, working within a series of demanding constraints (ie. release deadlines), and coming up with viable creative solutions that make the most of those restrictions is generally the mark of very talented individuals.
That might be why Toyotaro is handling the major parts of the manga now. The guy's a promoted fanboy and probably knows more about the Dragonball universe than Toriyama does at this point, haha.
VauschthePuca I this doesnt excuse Toriyama though. there are plenty of other anime base manga that also had their time constraints and amazing pressure, One Piece being an example.. especially with the Big Mom arch only being about 10 chapters ahead of the anime. and yet they've done a glorious job of sticking with creative writing and closing up a billion plot holes. it makes Toriyama seem like the Doctor House of manga authors to me when i see all his interviews implying that he just doesnt friggin care anymore.
They have different writing styles.
Oda remembers everything and builds off it.
Toriyama writes out of convenience and spur of the moment changes.
Here's a secret, being detail oriented and not having plot holes isn't good writing.
Being entertaining with good characters, pacing, and themes is good writing.
If you are spending more time worrying about internal consistency than thematic consistency in a serialized work you are going to drag.
Toriyama forgets better ideas than most of us will ever come with.
After watching a bit of GT and much of Super, I personally think that SSG should be a form that's exclusive to Goku and Goku alone. He's the only one who has consistently trained with King Kai and other beings who hold a similar status.
It makes more sense that Vegeta would have access to SS4 (despite it not being cannon?) because of who he is and how he trains. Not only that (and I'm aware that he doesn't have his tail) but he was able to control his ape form back in the Saiyan Saga(?). If the story behind acquiring SS4 were cannon, that form should be exclusive to Vegeta.
Gohan should (and does, if memory serves me right) be the only one to have Mystic (a form I'm not too knowledged about).
All of these forms make sense for the characters, and it's so much better than giving them all the same general thing. I would honestly like to see this difference because these characters might work better in their specific form, and it's so much better than being outclassed by each other (so to speak) despite sharing the same general bracket.
Lastly, I would love to see specific abilities and benefits that come with their respective forms. For example, (and I think this is the case) SSG would be the best form for ki control and ki attacks would be devastating, to say the least. SS4 would give incredible strength and speed increase while Mystic would have its own unique and specific benefits.

John Cornelius yeah I agree. It would give the characters more depth if they had individuality. Only difference is in hairstyles slightly. In the movies, Vegeta's hair is lighter and Goku is more golden. But it would be dope if they went with your idea. Of course the haters are gonna come through and hate on GT. Like always....

Actually Masako, Toriyama actually meant the Super Saiyan form was originally gonna be 10 times more powerful then what he was capable of (Kaioken times 20), which means Super Saiyan was originally gonna be a 200 times multiplier, but since Goku didn't TOTALLY annihilate Freeza (ie, Goku still took a lot of damage in the fight) it was more like a 50 times multiplier!

In response to Masako's parting question, one of the things I love about DB Super is the sort-of return to Dragon Ball's sense of adventure--they got away a little bit form the endless power one-upmanship that marked DBZ.
You see the concept of divine ki adding a new dimension to fights, Roshi teaching the sealing technique (even if it was in vain), and the little tricks Hit, Frost, and the werewolf use to get over on their opponents in the tournaments. Most recently is the value of guile and strategy in the upcoming tournament, for which Krillin (who has been left in the dust with regards to power level), has had a return to glory.
The 'power up to a new form' convention only carries so far, it's little things like the above that make conflicts more interesting.
I always thought it would have been really interesting if Goku was the only one to ever become Super Saiyan on the show. I remember watching Toonami when it happened. I was still in school, probably like 5th grade or something. I was an avid fan of the show and watched it every day around 4 or 5 oclock. I watched the Namek/Frieza saga hearing all about the legendary Super Saiyan transformation and the build up to it was extreme. it was like a godly near unobtainable status, something of folklore, totally scary and beautiful at the same time. When Frieza did the unthinkable and killed Krillin right in front of Goku, pushing Goku into a state of bewilderment, despair and unadulterated rage, he did it, he let out one almighty scream and golden light exploded from him, and a godly creature that bore his appearance, with icy blue eyes that burn with hate stood in his place. It was a really powerful moment, everything, from the tone, to the shock of the bystanders to the look of sheer terror on Frieza's face as his greatest nightmare stood right there before him, more powerful than he thought conceivable. I don't think anyone else on the entire show should have been able to do it.
As much as I like Trunks, and as awesome as his entrance is, it totally leeches off of the coolness of Goku's transformation. Then Vegeta finally did it, and that was okay and all, then Gohan did it (though to be fair, he was the FIRST to show signs of Super Saiyan power). That was all cool and fine and dandy, but then kid Trunks and Goku's out of nowhere useless son Goten did it like it was nothing, causing Vegeta to make the most accurate summary of this overwinded comment I'm making, he called it a "Super Saiyan bargain sale". It's like the specialty and epicness of the Super Saiyan transformation had been ruined as the show progressed. The Super Saiyan transformation is something that could only be achieved through the experience of true despair and anger, something that wasn't achieved through excessive amounts of training, but a power that could only be tapped when it was NEEDED, not when it was wanted. A Saiyan had to undergo a massive amount of pressure to become so fucked up in the head just to get to that state.
Then we got Super Saiyan 2, which was lazy in design, and Super Saiyan 3, which is retarded looking, and in GT we got Super Saiyan 4, which while unique in design, is just no... Now we got this Super Saiyan God bullshit which is super redundant and the design for it is the laziest thing I ever seen in my life. I'm okay with having a million transformations if the design is at least entertaining, but turning the regular Super Saiyan hair blue is just amateur. The worst thing is I feel like it's gonna go through the whole Super Saiyan transformation sequence all over again but with minty blue hair instead of gold. Please Stop.

Toasty Kitten The Kaioken is more of boost then a transfromation. The Kaioken as is only temporary, and is hell on your not only stamina but also your body. Ssj can also be not good for your body either, but it has more beneficial the then the temporary Kaioken.

Kaioken=10 to 20 however is not a transfromation, and is a difficult move to use, not even Goku fully mastered it and has after battle side affects.
ssj=50 though also difficult to master has no negative effects for your body in the long run (as long as you don't have a virus), do note this is just OG ssj though.
I understand that the SSJ Multiplier is 50x, but if Akira Toriyama had intended it to be 10x, then he would have half the power that he had using the Kaioken at 20x. Not really Frieza whomping material.

Toasty Kitten Good point, but remember Frezia was holding back like Goku. After the spirit bomb Frezia was 50% of his power then went to his 100% "form". I don't have Frezia's power level on hand right now, but it was higher then base Goku, Goku needed a much larger use the 20x power boost.
MegaRyuki another, good point. But King Kia said that a 10x or 20x could be dangerous. If he did it over and over it would most likely kill him in a WAY worse way then that virus ever would. Better to have a Form then constantly using a move that could kill you if over used.

In Toriyama's defense the changes from SSJ to SSJ2 are very subtle (Vaguely spikier hair and lightning).
I do love how one of the biggest anime fandoms was created by such a laid back guy who just kinda stumbles into legend.
It's funny: when the show finally got to that part, the only thing my young mind thought was "OOOOH, that's where the idea of Super Sonic came from!" It all came together.
Surprisingly, the thing that has me really excited for the Tournament of Power is the emphasis in skill and tactics exemplified in including Krillin and Roshi. I wish the series had taken more the track instead of just "they're stronger". Sure, Freeza was super powerful, but what if the Androids just had the whole "They are machines and never get tired" thing, where the longer they fought, the worse it got for the heroes, with the Androids even using stall tactics to take advantage of that, and Cell being worse because not only was he limitless(right?) but he had all the heroes skills built in(including regeneration), and then Buu, while more power full still, was mainly a threat because he was, as far as anyone could tell, completely indestructible. So... Yeah. I dunno.

It was once seen as the ultimate method of power but nowadays it STILL has a place, being a great multiplier to someone like Goku who’s already gotten much stronger than Namek and Cell games.

My only gripe with Dragon Ball is how the characters seem to go thru the same power scaling as eachother when it could be so much more interesting. If vegeta didn't lose his tail and kept improving oozaru or more stuff like turning majiin to keep up. If Gohan explored the gods power instead of Goku. Goku pushing the limits of what a super saiyan is. Krillin continuing to innovate and really demonstrate ki control and finding ways to keep up (kinda like how they seem to be going in super). Piccolo could use more "magical" techniques in tandem with ki blasts. Exploring different schools of martial arts and ki through Tien and Chaotzu. Less huge ki blasts and more unique ways for the characters to shine

I thought the reason Goten and Trunks(and Gohan) had an easier time getting to Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 were because they were half-bloods. Something about them being half didn't require the immense amount of time and effort required to reach that legendary form. And since no Saiyan in the past had mixed babies, they never knew the dormant power that lay within.
"MARKETING!" Love it when he does that.
I think the concept of Super Saiyan is cool, but I have a couple of problems with it.
1. The design is underwhelming. It's hardly a transformation when the most noticeable change is that a character's hair changes color and spikes up. It isn't nearly as amazing as it could have been if it wasn't design in such a way simple to save time.
I came up with a design for Super Saiyan where Goku's hair spikes up, but remains the same color, they grow hair around their entire body, like SSJ4 but it's the same color, and they have to have their tail to reach the next stage where their hair becomes golden.
2. The concept ended up hurting the supporting cast and their viability. My favorite Saiyan character is Vegeta solely because of how much character development he's gone through. Of all the characters, he's gotten enough attention to really bring out the best change in his character.
But when it comes down to the Super Saiyan transformation and what it brought along with it, I became incredibly disappointed in the human cast as they got pushed further and further to the side in favor of marketing more yellow haired monkey men.
The humans have more interesting techniques and a plethora of potential of their own, yet Toriyama seems to have forgotten that the human characters could even fight. Hell even Piccolo who Toriyama stated is his favorite character doesn't get to do nearly as much beyond being a babysitter because he can't keep up with the Super Saiyans and their bullshit multipliers.
3. All the stages and forms are kind of stupid. Every time the Saiyan characters need more power, it manifests itself in the form of a new transformation. Which is dumb, instead of mastering just one form and bringing out the best of it along with mastering new techniques, they just get a new form that makes them stronger by default.
There's hardly any creativity in any of the forms as it is. I was never able to tell Super Saiyan's 1 and 2 apart, because the only difference is electricity. Some could argue that Super Saiyan 2 is just Super Saiyan using their maximum power.
And then Super Saiyan 3 is really long hair and you lose your eyebrows. That's it. It looks kind of cool, but it's just longer hair. And now we've got red haired Super Saiyans, blue haired, pink haired, whatever Super Saiyan rage is supposed to be, and any character who isn't a Saiyan or an antagonist has yet to get a transformation of their own.
Just, shitty writing in my opinion. It's only acceptable to a lot of people because it's Dragon Ball, but nobody would put up with this sort of character under-utilization in many other series'.

To be fair, SSJ2 may as well not even be a thing. It's basically SSJ1++, and really always has. It looks the same, it's used as the default SSJ transformation these days and it was almost entirely skipped in the actual story. We were given a ret-con about how Gohan's amazing power in the Cell Saga was actually SSJ2 and not just him being a really powerful SSJ1 then we're immediately introduced to SSJ3. Watching the anime, I thought I'd missed a whole story arc when that happened. It's the same thing with Blue. "Yeah, the red Super Sayian God thing doesn't matter. Blue is basically the same thing except you can't regenerate."
And frankly, I'm happier for it. I like Dragon Ball's history of transformations, but I like it when they all serve some kind of purpose. SSJ 1 and 2 - collectively Super Saiyan - serve as the regular transformation for fighting "mortal" enemies and for showing off. SSJB is the transformation used when serious power is needed, and it always comes a narrative "Woah!" from the crowd. I'm not a fan of new techniques outright replacing old ones, which makes me really happy that the Kaio-Ken seems here to stay. I strongly suspect Goku will eventually merge SSJB with the Kaio-Ken to produce a brand new form more similar to the original Super Saiyan God, but that's ultimately just a guess.

are we to expect the tournament could lead to a darker twist. If the High Priest is behind it, hypothetically speaking, if he was able to manipulate the omni kings to allow combatants to die in a fight to the finish. without the ability to be wished back EVER! this could be that sense of regret and weighted guilt the series could use to have goku understand what he has done, to feel the responsibility of his closest friends die due to him pushing them to join him and knowing they would never come back. In my theory it could add more drama and more stakes the series could use, and it could be a way for some characters from gt to return like the dead characters meeting Pikkon or such.
Every time I hear things like this, I just want to go insane and make a comic book or something on the fly to see how far I get with it. This was a nice video.
Oh, and it would have been interesting to see a base form Goku continue to train and never reach Super Saiyan. What if he was stronger because he never even realized he could have a quick buff like that?
In the dub, Vegeta was explained that his heart was pure. Pure as in pure evil. Or at least that's what he said. And technically the legend never said the Saiyan had to be pure good to achieve the transformation, so i guess that explanation could technically work
I'm glad to see someone besides me thinking that way; I'd always taken the "pure heart" thing to be a fluke on Goku's part. He said he "had" a "pure heart, awakened by rage"; no one even mentions necessity of that quality until Kuririn sees Vegeta transform, so...Unreliable Expositor?
I love the Super Saiyan transformation concept in it of itself. In learning that SSJ was intended to be a 10x multiplier, it sounded to me that Toriyama was probably thinking that SSJ was a humanoid form of the Oozaru in concept.
As for other ways Goku could have gotten stronger? Hmmmm...I think they finally covered every version of fan-desired power boosts they could when combining SSJ with his other techniques! So yeah! So far, so good! ^^

whenever I think about achieving the form, I think there's some desperacy mixed in there too. the other things are obvious, but the initial transformation happens at times when the character needs it, when they have no other way to overcome their opponent. 3 could have easily been 2, as 2 didn't change much in design and there was no real anticipation for 3, apart from writing into a corner on buu's power
I'm genuinely curious on what he was thinking during Gohan transformation in the Cell Games? If he wrote it as him becoming SSJ2 only to forget about it months or even years later i can accept that. I do know you, a Gohan fan (like myself) and would have something interesting to say about the matter.

My rationalization of how Saiyans other than Goku achieved the SSJ transformation is the ability to read Ki. Reading Ki is not just about knowing your opponent's power level, reading Ki also reads your opponent's intentions allowing you to predict their actions:
- in the Saiyan Arc, Gohan had trouble detecting the Saibamen's movement until Piccolo reminded him to follow their energy.
- in the Android Arc, Goku did not avoid Trunks' initial attack because Goku _"felt"_ that Trunks would not do it (and Trunks did not)
Reading Ki is also a gateway to your opponent's mind since fighting is the body and mind working together. So basically if Vegeta never saw the SSJ, never knowing how it _"felt",_ he would never have achieved the form. Vegeta *needed* to see it firsthand.
Goku acquiring the SSJ form on his own is still amazing and something others most likely could not do. Goku showed other Saiyans the way.
This discussion left me with an interesting thought. What if toriyama never made super saiyan, and no kind of transformation of its kind existed in dbz? What would dbz be like today? What would the impact on anime as a whole be?
Is it me or did SSJ goku in the Frieza arc had more like white blond-ish hair with thick locs than when he arrived on earth? Did Toriyama changed the appearance? Super Saiyan looked so different on Namek.
That's not so much that Toriyama changing the SSJ design as much as his art style evolving as a whole.
One thing about that power increase: if it were only a tenfold increase, the only effect would be that it doesn't require the mental focus that Kaioken does. By that point Goku was already using the x10 Kaioken, which increases his power tenfold already. (Well, 11, actually - the 1x Kaioken doubles his power, and each level above that adds the same amount again, so using x10 Kaioken makes his power 10 times normal from the kaioken plus his original power).
So that fiftyfold increase is really only fivefold over what Goku's already capable of with previously introduced boosting techniques. Still definitely significant, but not as ludicrous as what "fiftyfold increase" normally suggests, given the Kaioken is locked out of the standard SSJ forms.
Can we get a Ki attacks explained video? Like, whats the difference between a galick gun and a kamehameha? why is a kienzan more dangerous? why do beams seem to mostly just push people around, but sometimes burn them up?
All the ki techniques are different in the way the energy is collected and how it is shaped. Most attacks use internal energy, while other attacks (spirit bomb) use external energy. The form of the energy can be modified so that it can be sharp, like Trunk's spirit sword or flowing like a Kamehameha.

"bargain sale" is not from the dubs. In the original japanese version Vegeta actually says "bargain sale" in english. That scene is available on youtube in japanese if you want to check it out.
Goten was shown to turn into a super saiyan first when chi chi was pushing him during training. Unless I'm wrong which is possible. So anger in some way shape or form is still part of attainng it.
I like to think they materialize their Ki into Hair dye which is biologcly attracted to Sayain Hair, making them blond XD. That would explain why the color washes away in sync with their aura sometimes(like when Vegeta knocks Goku out), and why SSJBlue is blue. My head canon anyway.

Whenever you think about what Super Saiyan Blue is, it's a Super Saiyan, within a Super Saiyan god.. which is a god.. within a Super Saiyan.. which means, that it's technically a Super Saiyan within a Super Saiyan within a Super Saiyan...

I'm pretty sure SSJ2 wasn't called "SSJ2" until SSJ3 came along. Before then it was just called "A SSJ that has ascended past a SSJ." Sort of like 100% Perfect Cell or %100 Form Frieza. Basically your max form at its full potential.
Actually my favorite transformation in fiction is the Spider-man to man-spider transformation in the Spider-man animated series. Something about that storyline was just so cool.
Does anybody else think that certain attack moves sound much better in japanese? Like instead of "solar flare" Krillin shouts "TAIYO KEN!!!"

Actually, Masako, the argument for the pure of heart working with Vegeta was it doesn't explicitly note what it must be pure of; Thus, a heart of pure rage (or ego) would qualify just as much as a heart pure of hate. They had a lot of answers to things like that because they wanted it to be true, lol.
What I want to does the 50x power level also mean 50x everything else. Can you lift 50 times more weight, run 50 times faster, see 50 times sharper, smell 50 times further, hear 50 times further.. or does many different things with 2-10x multipliers combine into the 50x overall power level increase :D

You have to remember that the Ozaru form gives you a x10 power boost. So having the Super Saiyan form give a x10 boost also would make it pretty useless since going ape would easily just work as well.
And don't forget that Toriyama also forgot about Launch, which is why she seemingly disappeared without a trace after the saiyan saga. He also forgot Saiyans had Tails until soeone pointed it out and he made hte excuse for Trunks and Goten that they had theirs removed at birth.

To be fair about forgetting what super saiyan 2 was, it was literally just a bit more spiky SS1 with a few sparks, hardly a visible transformation at all.
I've got a question for you Masako, whatever happened to Goku's Power Pole? That was his signature weapon in DragonBall, and it had so much utility. Why would Goku just abandon it?

a multiplier of x10 wouldn't make sense because Goku was already constantly using the kaioken x10 and still struggling against Freeza. he pulled of kaioken x20 for a sec but it did nothing, and freeza was still using a very small amount of his power. i think x50 would have been near minimum to beat him.
I'm just here waiting for Pan to obtain this transformation. I know most people don't care for her because of GT, but it's just a next generational thing.
To be fair, there were a few scenes that was hard to tell that they were in super saiyan 2 over 1. Nice talk though.
Yeah, actually kid Gohan was the only one who changed significantly in his SSJ2 form. Goku only had a couple of flocks on his fringe getting spikier (and you have to pay attention in order to notice that one), and Vegeta not even that. Apart from that, the only clear thing of the transformation were the blue lightning bolts around the body, and those weren't that visible in the anime.

I'd like to see a villain in Super who some how has the ability to disable Goku from turning super saiyan. So during the fight when Goku is out matched and would turn super saiyan to even the playing field, he can't, and has to work through that to defeat the opponent
