Also to point out, giving out dr. Ratio for free was just a smarter move when you consider the quality of the banners. They had a Kafka rerun and Kafka is THE character. Then you add black swan and sparkle, acheron and aventurine. With the Dan heng and Jing yuan rerun banners. It frees up people's wallets by not having to pull for dr ratio when they have a stacked roaster of pulls. And people remember huge acts of generosity. Star rail is playing the long con while genshin feels greedy.
More like hsr is playing the "we need to keep our players from playing other turn based gachas cause theres dozens of them" game but ok

They're kinda forcing players to feel excited for new characters cuz what else is there to be excited about?
4.4 and especially 4.5 are looking pretty quite, but 4.6 is likely to be a huge update with the last area for Fontaine, Archon and/or Interlude quests and Furina Story Quest part 2, maybe a hangout for Charlotte or somebody like, that as well as whatever new character they feel like dropping, which if it's Arlecchino is gonna make the patch positively mental. Not every patch is gonna contain a major content updates unfortunately. Play another game in the meantime and just log in and do dailies or whatever during 4.5 if you get bored or even HSR if it catches your fancy. Genshin and HSR are clearly meant to offset one another the way it's been set up with the major story updates happening over 4-6 months for when then 4-6 months for the other.
Also honestly it's WAY worse for a lot of other games for it feeling like they're just pushing characters and no reason to play the actual game. FGO and Fire Emblem heroes are constantly content/story quest starved, but regularly pumping out new characters or alts of existing popular ones. Genshin and HSR at least don't have more than a month or so between some form of 4-5 hours worth of story/character content at bare minimum, while a lot of gacha games you can't even necessarily expect that much.

I don't see why people assume most consumers actually stick to their guns? Everyone knows every person who protests a blizzard game is just 1 cutscene away from being a paying customer again. Everyone remembers the Call of Duty steam protest group. Everyone remembers the first anniversary for genshin where everyone was "going to quit". There are countless other examples of "company did bad thing, no one buy it" and then a ton of people still buy it.
No reason to assume a company that has been successful will need to lie when they hit a road bump, when there are so many examples to say people will throw money at them anyways.

100% agree with this. Pokémon is another great example of people having all bark and no bite. people kept going on about how they were going to boycott Sword and Shield due to them being lazy, buggy and unfinished games that even lacked some features from past games, but they still sold well regardless which led to Scarlet and Violet being even more unfinished which led to the same story repeating itself.

Both Genshin Lab and HSR Lab have been unreliable for several months. HXGdiluc said the same during Neuvillette's banner, which on this chart was well below what it had raised. You can see that in this chart Ruan Mei earned a lot, but based on the sensor tower, it wasn't that much.
Neuvilette is insanely underestimated and Topaz & Numby insanely overestimated as two glaring examples. Like it's so blatant based on their relative positions on China IOS ranking charts that it was about that time I stopped giving it any particular credibility. By sheer fluke it seems to have gotten November China IOS estimates within roughly the same range as the Bilibili guy I do trust the numbers from. October was WAY off though.

Genshin despite its problems is a great game that entertains thousands of people, and when someone is satisfied with this fun they spend money.
Xianyun is a mommy who brings a new way of playing the game, together with Nahida it is very obvious that they will sell a lot.
And as much as the Lab is unreliable, it is common sense that Genshin will always make a lot of money.
The problem here is that some CCs, frustrated by the boycott not working, want to do everything they can to justify that someone can like Genshin, which in their view is unacceptable.

Sales remain the same or have fallen a little compared to previous years due to these charts being mobile which does not cover the total gains.
Look at the recent news that Genhsin took 40 months to earn 5 billion dollars on Mobile alone (average of 125 million per month), imagine if you combine all the platforms.
@@Ahlovendino Sensor Tower subscriber side is good for App Store all around and the Android market outside of China, but since China does not have Google Play they are unable to get any data from it, which heavily effects it's estimates on Genshin and Honkai Star Rail in particular. The free non-subscriber version of Sensor Tower that you see in this video with the numbers rounded off to the nearest million is barely any more useful than Genshin Labs charts though.

Yea alot of what he said just doesnt seem right. The argument that rubbed me in a bad way was his comment that Hoyoverse rewards HI3 and HSR more because they are more loyal when it literally does not make sense especially for HSR. Like oh they reward the loyalty of HSR players of just 2 months with a free 10 pull and they proceed to do that every single patch. In fact, Genshin should be considered more loyal as they are consistently the highest earning gacha game and the amount of people who defend it is amazing.

One thing I'll say that is somewhat of an effective idea of his that Teccy disagrees with is the idea of changing the name to show discontent AND leaving the game on for as long as possible (the later of which Teccy disagrees with) while doing nothing (or just playing I guess) could be effective (granted also can't recommend as it's a waste of electricity thus your own money) as as long as players are on Mihoyo must pay whatever amount of cash is needed to keep the servers running thus it wastes their money. Yes it shows player retention which at first looks good but as long as players refuse to pay as well (this is the key point of course....players need to stop giving them money, hell across all their games tbh as it'll only be when the company loses money as a whole and know it's because they're doing something in 1 or all of their games that they may change something) the stock holders will eventually get ticked enough to force a change when they start seeing said game is not bringing in money but using up resources and it's obvious that the reason isn't due to disinterest for the game but due to backlash from something the company's doing (if they're just disinterest and not making any money chances are rather than making changes they may just shut the game down earlier than intended to save costs...that's also why going after all their games would be a better idea as if it's only done to 1 game but the others still profit all they need to do is shut down the 1 game to stop bleeding money rather than fixing it).

@@MrDakold I think the boycott just kind of never really happening again has some CC sort of trying to run damage control, which sadly involves spinning these unsubstantiated and just kind of outright false narratives.
They just can't really seem to take the realization that their input didn't really matter very much despite really thinking it should. Like psychologically it makes sense that some people aren't taking it that well because it sucks to feel you put a bunch of effort into something for nothing to come of it, but it's also causing a lot of misinformation to get out there compounding people's bitterness over the whole matter. It's very reminiscent of what's happening in political discourse lately in the United States.
I really don't think Hoyoverse made all those CC's fight amongst themselves for a couple weeks straight there around the end of January/beginning of February either lol. That's 100% on them just completely losing the fucking plot of their own volition.
24:09 As a long time fgo player and whale I think its unfair to say that in genshin the limited 5 star is complete at c0 and make the point that in fgo they're somehow not. In fgo the only thing additional ssr copies do is increase ultimate damage. When in genshin constellations have the potential to change a unit's gameplay. As for how much money it takes to get a character to max ultimate level (5 copies), it can take a fucking lot but 5k usd is way over the mark in most cases unless you really are that unlucky, i.e. for all the ssrs I have at np5 I can say that its never been over 600 usd for any of them (its still a lot of money I admit). While the rates seem horrible in both numbers and practice, theres times where it suddenly turns into your favor where you get the character you want within the first multi or even single roll.
fgo has plenty of issues, like the concept of reruns being completely deleted from the game and no clear communication between devs and player. But in terms of gacha or how p2w it is theres not much of a problem. Higher rarity units are generally stronger and do make the game easier usually, and I too am guilty of playing most of the content one easy mode with said units cause I like big numbers. But to this day all the content is still beatable with 1-3 star + welfare units which are all widely available without spending a dime.
Fr, FGO is the single most F2P friendly game out there (it was actually Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, but the game got EOS for the end of this month.)
Rates are the most punishing, yes, but most Servants are easily replaceable.
What I do notice is that their's a ton of "Bot" acc praising Genshin/hoyo in their twitter/X comments its hilarious and cringed at the same time😂

I think Eidolons play on my desire to complete things. I love Silverwolf and Topaz. Both of them are E6S5 because the Eidolons make using them easier and since the Eidolons sound good and I can save money from each paycheck leading up to the release i have no problem dropping the $1000. I'm sure that completion mindset is something they take into account. Wanna E6S5 Sparkle next but... probably not happening there's better things to do with that money

Tec, if his numbers are correct his theory about COVID not being the prime driver of Genshin is also correct. Its highest revenue ever is 2023. If COVID was it, that is where the highest revenue would be shown. Especially in a live service game where earlier peaks are usually the highest a game will ever see.

It's not that hoyo don't value genshin because players are "disloyal" and reward HSR for being loyal, it's the opposite.
Genshin players are SO LOYAL that hoyo feels they can disrespect them and get away with it.
Meanwhile for HSR, they give us a lot of quality and rewards as a way to maintain player retention.
People saying BOTW ripped off Skyrim is mostly going so massive open world which more games did after Skyrim. Even Dragon Age hopped on that to a degree with Inquisition and they even pointed to Skyrim as inspiration for the change.
FGO you only need 5 copies total to really max out a character. Its pity system is horrendous but it is unlikely you are spending more than 2.5k per character.
Getting more copies only affects the strength of the Ultimate not the fundamental way the character is used, or can be acquired through gameplay on the first copy.
And even then, 120 is just not that big of a deal.
NP5 is only needed for specific strats, or if you want to pimp your waifu.

There is something being speculated that is being leaked to come out in 4.5 that will make a lot of people upset, the long rumored third banner. It’s not a regular third banner. It’s not a second standard banner. It is more akin to the weapon banner but far, far worse. I think even the casuals will get upset cause it sounds horrible.

@@yoiko89 the official hoyo website states the sum of nahida and xainyun's sales, not separate, we do not know who sold more but its safe to assume its nahida. Either way its not really the point as it doesnt matter who sold more, the point is the banner sold well overall as it was expected to do so.
I think he's right in the "force them to notice us", they don't notice people silent quitting, even if it shows as player retention, I think it's the most effective way to protest as it's about the only way to be seen, you can't see what ain't there.
Also it shows that it is players who are dedicated to the game that are protesting, not people who wouldn't play anyway like a lot of western protests these days.

The point of 'it's not supported by whales' is that the usual argument is 'us protesting won't do anything because only a few whales are carrying it'. He's correct that whales will buy on the first banner, but reruns of popular characters always make large amounts regardless of the gacha game. FGO is heavily carried by its whales, and yet if a popular character drops it will cause a huge spike in banner sales every time until the player base is saturated. What he's not considering are 'new whales' who either join the game after the original, became a whale after the original, or become tempted into turning whale on that banner. He's also incorrect about FGO being 'infinite units'. FGO until recently only required NP5 (and it started at NP1) for a maxed character, and those NP levels literally only increased the strength of the NP. Recently they implemented a new whale system which requires NP7 to fully be complete, but just like Genshin, the only purpose for this is solo flexing. You never need to whale to succeed.
Anyway, another of his points is basically pointing to them lying about the sales. Where did the $20m+ go from those banner sales? I believe he's suggesting there's no indication they spent it anywhere else, so they're either pocketing it or they're putting it into sales numbers elsewhere, padding the sales to make them look better. Given HYV's underhanded tactics, I am not surprised at all if it turns out this is what they're doing.

i know of gachas where the top whales would spend way above 10k on a weekly basis (Summoners War, Fantasia etc.) and there's close to no limit on how much you can spend.
pulling/summoning systems with no pity systems and no banners, just random out of all characters. gear/artifact/rune packs with no purchase limit. payed energy/stamina/resin-equivalent ... the list goes on
for Genshin tho... there's no point in spending anything if you maxed out a character

The revenue charts are also inaccurate because you do not know how muc the baseline is, or what it was spent on. People buy welkins and battle pass which are completely unrelated to the current gacha. We just had TWO skins released, those cost money and they're discounted for this version.
Xianyun isn't the highest earning banner, frankly, a solid chunk of those earnings are from skins.

They started distancing themselves then and the 1st anniversary came and was an uproar and in combination with the ccp mentality they have, controling creators and pushing the narrative their game is perfect thru creators you just have a recipe for disaster

As a day 1 Genshin player myself, it seems as if this guys didn’t play from the beginning, and he is basing his opinions on hearsay. I don’t know if that’s the case but it definitely looks like that. I’m with Tectone on most takes in this one.
all i am going to say is that my alt account got hacked while i wasnt playing on it and i send an email to mihoyo so they could help me get my acc back i send them the info they needed and just never replied .so i send them a new email about what happened guess what they never replied .RIP my alt acc had like 6 5 stars on it

Saying a c0 character in genshin is a "complete" character while np1 (the equivalent) of a fgo character makes you spend more money is 100% backwards. Genshin characters change with every constellation sometimes to the point where they are an entirely new character with a totally different playstyle. (Furina c6 completely eliminates the need for a healer in your team for instance.) Some characters are actually boring as hell until you spend and get those higher constellations (Tartaglia) So you wanna spend more money to get the ideal playstyle for that character.
Fgo characters just get a slightly strong ult with more copies. All their skills and stats can be maxed with one copy, they just get a boost to their ultimate by pulling more. That boost actually have diminishing returns too... the biggest boost is np1 to np2. Np 4 to 5 actually provides the smallest boost. So yes, rates are worse and pity system is high... but you only need 1 copy for a full kit of a character unlike genshin.

Plus, in FGO, bronze and silver characters are as strong as SSRs, so if you choose to go that path, you will not suffer from powercreep, unlike E7, FEH and most other gachas.
But hating FGO is cool, so everyone just rolls with it.

Gonna address one other thing regarding the 'whales don't pull on re-run banners' comment that Soup made. That's likely not true when it comes to content creators as many of them will put money into whaling again when they do stuff like putting money and pulling on fans accounts if said fan didn't pull on a re-run character they want before (say Teccy decided to go back to Genshin when an archon is running and offers enough free pulls for said archon to get them at least 1x for fans for example like he does in Star Rail...or if he himself decided to get Nahida on her re-run (don't think you got her yet right Teccy?)). In this case even a whale with C6 will be putting money back into said characters so Soup is wrong in that regard and while content creators may not be the majority of whales Genshin seems to have more CC whales than most other gachas.
Also his comments regarding Hoyo's games sales decreasing not long after their respective releases near the 30 minute mark are kinda iffy as, imo, the main reason the sales tank is because the main meaty patches of that series of pathes were more or less done and over with (1.0 to 1.1/2.0-2.2, 3.0-3.2, 4.0-4.2 in Genshin where all the archon quests are and then 1.0 to 1.1 for Star Rail where most of the games main quests have been so far, all other patches are more filler in nature. Throw in whether or not that patch had a character who's design/kit were more desirable than others 9and in Seele's case she mainly got sales due to being the first limited characters...Venti as well I guess though he has the added benefit of being an Archon for later patches unlike Seele/most Star Rail characters where it's harder to tell which characters are the 'leader'/most important character of said patch's storyline). Pretty sure if you go back and look at all of Genshin's sales from 1.0 to now you'll mainly see the Archons/Archon re-runs being the most profitable with maybe 1 or 2 other busted characters coming close after them (Kazuha for instance) and the same will be for Star Rail when it comes to the most busted character's re-runs (Jing Liu's re-run will probably be one of the better re-runs, same for Ruan Mei and unless they release someone better even Argenti has a good chance for his re-run due to the Pure fiction mode and Fu Xuan will probably do well due to her being the best preservation unit right now (only way she doesn't is if a better one releases)) whereas other character like Seele, Jing Yuan, Topaz, Blade, Silver Wolf, etc wil likely not sell as well and will rely on whatever other character/new banner releases at the same time for that patch to sell well...if all are duds than that patch will just drop off plain and simple).

you can't stop the discontent, the discontent is real it doesn't stop without doing anything, I'm now without hope and I'm really thinking of quitting after so much effort to maintain my account, as soon as Wuthering Waves comes out if genshin hasn't changed I've decided that I'll stop playing it and I hope many will because it's the only thing they deserve to stay with their fanbase of casual players,It's not a question of rewards, it's a question of game modes and the absolute lack of a sense of progression. We're all at level 60 now and we can no longer find better artifacts than those we don't already have.

Im glad you mentioned Mihoyo is invested to make people have company loyalty, that is why I'm inhibiting myself from playing any other Mihoyo titles. And separating the devs of a single company is logical but is a cope at the same time.

I will say that one of the things he's wrong about is E7's need to get multiple version of the same character. You do not NEED to at all. There's only 2 imprints that are very useful which is crit chance and speed and those are also on free characters. The other imprints don't matter nearly as much to count at all. The main issue as of now, is the artifacts, which, even those aren't as hard to get as compared to other games, however, they do not have a pity which is what we've been asking SG to add in for a minute now. So, while Epic Seven is definitely more f2p friendly than most gachas, the artifact system is pretty annoying and I hope SG changes it.

I do not doubt that they would lie considering they are willing to inflate the games relevance with bots. In the case that it wasn't a lie we all know that the sales were carried by Nahida since shes OP and has a history of some of the best sales in the game (other than Raiden)
Some of his opinions (at least half or the majority) do make sense (there is logic behind of them), the thing is he didn't have any evidence (or reliable source) to back up any of these claims...

Once a company goes public, it belongs to the board of investors and is subject to hostile takeovers. That’s also when the original vision gets watered down and consumers are screwed over in favor of profits. Going public basically means that your company now is owned by BlackRock and Vanguard, who will implement ESG guidelines and turn the company into a soulless husk.

I had no interest in HSR cuz it was a Turnbased, but hearing all the free ratio hype I gave it a try and had a blast with the game, the animations, the amount of quality cutscenes, the music, and the lack of paimon got me hooked. and I did drop a few hundreds to get some characters and the lightcones. I mean holly fk! look at Imbibitor lunae!
so even tho dr. ratio might be an under selling banner, they probably got quite a few big and small spender hooked to the game.
I hope they listen to their player base in china and change everything. And give me an Arlecchino C6 with her weapon
I doubt they’re lying about numbers, however, they are only telling a half true story. It’s like artists, specially in the music industry, we all now they buy their own music like 10K times in order to boost their song up the rankings, they don’t lose money as it’s their own music, they get promoted in articles etc etc, I believe hoyoverse is doing the same thing as this has been happening since the 80s.
