I actually interviewed for Mihoyo when they were recruiting for Genshin before it came out. From what I learnt, when they put you in a project, you are there for the entire duration of your employment. So if I were to guess right, the reason Star Rail has better giveaway than Genshin is because of the project lead or manager are 2 completely different people.
The producers for the games are different. Our producer USED to be the producer for HI3, gave dogshit rewards just as Genshin had, apparently almost killed the game, and then jumped ship to Genshin to let HSR's current producer take the lead. Only then did HI3 started being more generous. There's a very clear common cause here.
The team director for the two honkai games is the same, and the dude currently in charge of genshin used to oversee Honkai Impact, so you're not wrong based off what we can infer on how the games portrayed themselves to the playerbase

I play both Genshin and Starrail. The difference is insane. Not just the free gift, but how they change things for better user experience. They didnt have to do that, Genshin(Mihoyo) never did that for 3 years), but they actively did it. Many times too.

The thing is Genshin has always been real nasty with their Lantern Rite and Anniversary rewards. It's just that now a game of their own has better rewards subjectively better content, fans are now starting to realise that they are not getting treated well. Honestly I would like to see how far they can go until they start to lose their Genshin revenue or active players because of this. I hope Wuthering Waves or Project Mugen succeeds so that we finally have some real competition to Genshin.
ToF was a missed chance, but seeing WW beta I'm 100% sure Genshin specifically will have a run for their money. Gacha players have unstable loyalty, as soon as they see a new game released just now that is comparable/better than the one they're playing they'll atleast go and try it for a few days. Its just that Genshin never had any serious competetion until now, HSR is more like a "no resin in genshin" kinda game. Objectively better yes, but not the same as Genshin.

The real question is: Do people have enough self control to quit? They have complained about rewards every event, every year and yet Genshin still keeps going. If people can't vote with their wallets, Hoyo is going to continue on.

I like Star Rail but I prefer the free roaming and attacking abilities you have in Genshin Impact (I am a menace sometimes) and I don’t like having to take turns getting hit and hitting my enemy so I would prefer it if they put some more effort into Genshin so it can stay bc I like just killing/hitting random things/people

My bf and i started Star Rail together and i can say, after 2 months, he is the only one who still (rather enthusiastically) plays. I dropped it after not even a week. Exploration is really important to me and SR just lacks that.

@mobilelegend6566 That is correct. Cai Haoyu. He used to be HI3 lead producer, before he got replaced 3 years later. And the current Producer for HI3, David Jiang, is also the lead producer for Star Rail. And HI3 since Jiang's leadership, we've been getting Herrschers left and right for "free", completing missions within the time frame of the patch, as well as getting 50-70 wishes on Anniversary.

@beyondlego97 you feel? Genshin literally has 3 times the players of Honkai. Genshin has had around 63.7 million active players in the last 30 days and Honkai has had 21.03 million. Honkai's popularity has always been way overblown by its fans. It had a strong start, but player counts decreased before remaining consistent after the initial hype.

So this what’s happening in Genshin now. Makes me feel even better on leaving the game last year. My overall experience got boring eventually: the desert regions (left during that hourglass event thing or whatever), combat loop (QE Swap until DPS), artifact farming, constantly shoving TCG in our face, no skip dialogue option, same events, and full exploration locked behind some boring quests. Getting Genshin out of my daily life is like having a burden lifted off my shoulders. Don’t have to play a game like it’s a chore anymore.
The quests got so unbelievably boring that I just couldn't anymore. Listening to characters I don't care about talk about shit that I care about even less that has nothing to do with the main story. How did they even think writing this way was a good idea?

As for "more gems from exploration", no it didn't balance it out, at all. This is because star rail has 75-25 gacha rate (statistically that's one in four losses) as compared to the dog***t 50/50 of genshin. I had a new character and it's signature every update in HSR without spending any cash, in genshin I still have to save up for my fav character with welkyn and BP. Imagine defending a game you love so much you're willing to overlook any flaws like it's some sort of a tragic blind love. Enjoy the 3 fates btw

I think it will be an all characters rate up with an epitomized path like they do in HI3, where we can select like 5 weapons + 5 stigmata sets and we'll get one of the 5 when we reach like 40 pity. No need when every1 will dump all their money on each banner for a char with only 2 useable moves then shame every other game for not having similar revenue charts as if they aren't bragging about how badly they're getting robbed lol

Genshin was created by the CEO Cai Hanyou, the same one who previously worked on HI3rd before stepping down in 2017. He was responsible for bad rewards there, too. When he stepped down, the game started getting good sht, and he moved to Genshin. The guy outright hates free stuff.

The reason Genshin is not changing stuff is because the vast majority of the people doing the surveys in the game do not care about the things all the people on social media want. Remember, Genshin has 60 million monthly active players outside of China, and only like 5 million people active on social media at best.
Every survey I simply forget whatever ideas I have for feedback. This time, the first time I did the survey was my alt, so, it was kinda empty, but before logging into my main I decided I was gonna remember what I had to say and sent some feedback about endgame content etc

I'm so happy I quit right after finishing Inazuma. I didn't play for over a year, and now when I tried coming back, There was so much content I would have to go through, that I cannot be bothered to do all the unlocking and map exploring slog to even be ABLE to play any event, the game just straight up doesn't let me play some events, because I am so far behind on the Archon quest lines. I'm happy for it.
My girlfriend and I quit playing after Inazuma as well. The game started feeling like a chore and we do not enjoy fighting area bosses over and over again.
@@radicalraccoon Yeah, also the fact that the story is (in my opinion) just boring and the "choices" in dialogue you are presented with mean nothing, just makes me wish for a skip button. That's also something that is keeping me away from the game, the fact that I would need to sit in an endless slog of dialogue.
I feel like their silence about this issue is them checking the waters of what could happen to the version release if they did nothing; would everyone continue to play? Would the game act as if nothing happened? And it's stressful because Genshin is starting to act like they're the most indispensable Gacha Game to exist. I hope CN players continue to resist.

As a day 1 player, I enjoy the meme every year. When it happened first, I was a bit disappointed, but this prepared me for the second time. And as promised: The 2 aniversary rewards were on par with the stuff you get in the first 30 minutes playing the game. So for the 3rd year, I expected nothing more and nothing less than the stuff you get in the first 10 minutes of the game.

The only reason this always happens is because of GI producer Cai who is known for being very stingy with rewards. So until Cai is dethroned GI will never be a good game
I remember playing genshin 1.0 and dropped it because the rewards were so meager. Star rail on the other hand had given me 3 5 star characters within the 1st day and gave 80 free pulls on release. Every major patch gives 10 free pulls and events loaded of premium currency. You can really feel the difference in treatment with the 2 games.

I wouldnt mind returning but the inability to skip cutscenes and actual ingame cutscene/story archive keeps me away. By the time I get through a few quests, Ive pushed the buttons so damn much thanks to the dialogue that I dont even feel like playing anymore.
It's not even about the rewards. They should have done literally nothing, or just been silent and just put the fates in there silently and this wouldn't have been as explosive. It's insulting. Three years Genshin has bankrolled this company, propelling it into international, global corporation status granting it far, far more profits than the 100 million required to make it, cost. They've printed money hand over foot, and they can't give more than THREE fates extra to show appreciation? To make matters worse, HSR, their NEWER game got a free five star LIMITED five star handed to them for free, and a great character, to boot! This is while Genshin fans have been BEGGING for a standard banner selector, that wouldn't even hurt profits since you lost 5050 to them ANYWAYS so it wouldn't do anything to their profits. It'd be just a show of good will.

I play both Genshin and Star Rail, I'm also a F/GO veteran, so I don't get the "too little free stuff" thing. I get the argument, though I'll still try to stay from the debacle as much as possible
As a causal gamer I have to say that although I do understand the controversy and criticism, I'm just not as fired up on this topic. I'm alright with how it is now as I play the game to have fun and relax but I also wouldn't mind getting free stuff🤷
my theory is honkai star rail has all the nice rewards/qol features genshin players have been asking for, as mihoyo's way of pushing players to sign up for hsr instead. now they're slowing bringing these things into genshin (e.g. expedition claim) they want to encourage players to come back so now you have people playing both games. in reality both games of course have different managers but yeah just a theory

Mind you, genshin had always given in-game mail during the Chinese new year and I think it was also 3 fates. But the Chinese community definitely took it this time as an insult after seeing HSR team doing so much better. However it’s also a good thing this happened because it’s time to wake up people, something needs to CHANGE in their management, since HSR proved it can.

You mentioned that zhongli was the only character to be buffed, ever. and whislt that is true, I like to mention the fact that genshin impact is secretly NERFING characters. Lisa's defense reduction which she gains from level 60/70 was 30% (I remember someone making a video of dps qiqi, and they used lisa, and it said 30%) to 15%. Rosaria's talent (also from level 60/70) gained a cap for the crit rate boost. it now sits at a max of 15% crit rate. Yelan's talent (again, from level 60/70) used to be a grand total of 200% damage increase, but got nerfed to be 50% instead.
@@f.b.l.9813while I get what you were saying, but strictly speaking adjustment to chars (either buffing or nerfing) are not illegal in any gacha games, even in China / Japan. I mean if it is illegal, gacha games that have PVP like Epic Seven would never nerf some characters and instead will only offer buffs. Oh yes, while it's frown upon on a game where it is mostly about PVE, it's not at all illegal to nerf characters. And correct me if I am wrong, if the (stealth) nerf is true, all you need is hard proof to be sent to MiHoYo channel to address them, not complaining on a comment section.
This is just untrue. I've been there when theese characters' released and they were exactly as they are now. ...Unless you are talking about pre-release changes to leaked beta builds, which doesn't count as a nerf, since the characters were not released yet.

Probably the best video I've seen about this topic. It's so true about Mihoyo being deaf to players' feedback; I've experienced it myself sending feedback about possible bugs and being answered within 24-hours, but being ignored when it's about game QoL or game improvement (not even an automatic "We'll take that into account"). I consider myself a veteran gacha gamer, and every other game I've played gives enough rolls to get a high rating character (5★/SSR/UR/etc) during special events such as the game's anniversary, but Genshin not only gives meager rewards, but it keeps giving the same over and over every year, without change. Another thing I don't like about Genshin's game development, is the 6-week wait for the updates, when the content added can be completed in a weekend or so, leaving a 5-week wait for the next batch of quests. Event's give so few rewards (less than 2 rolls per event) and most event's backstories are so irrelevant to the main story and lore that I don't take them into account. Also, the lack of endgame content turns the game kinda irrelevant, so you do the dailies, and consume your resin in domains, at most, and then log-out, and that takes no more than 15-20 minutes a day.

If it's any consolation, that last bit you mention about small amounts of content being interspersed between month-long content droughts applies to Star Rail as well. I actually thought that wasn't the case for Genshin (I never played Genshin cuz I didn't care for the setting), but this video has really been an eye-opener when it comes to how Hoyo treats their fans in general. The fact that Star Rail can be so nice despite riding the coattails of Genshin is insane to me.
15:40 I'mma play devil's advocate and say that is probably the best case scenario, I mean I remember hearing that the devs behind WoW gave up on fixing the inventory (or giving more slots, can't remember which) because the code was so ingrained in everything that it would screw up the whole gane if they tried to modify it. Same thing with Bungie for Destiny 2, they removed a lot of content because it was getting too much to manage with every patch they added more and more stuff. So the fact that we have not lost anything in the game besides events shows that the devs are working their ass off to make sure they don't have to do the same thing as Blizzard or Bungie. And to the people who say that they had Honkai Impact 3rd to learn from, not really. Da Wei himself said that the Genshin Impact team was young and inexperienced, they're not veterans from the HI3 team. So they were also growing alongside Genshin, and are probably stuck fixing all of their messed up code since the beginning of the game while also giving us a ton of stuff to do every 6 weeks.

The truth is, Genshin has ALWAYS been stingy with rewards, but people didn't wanna listen. Genshin offers better gameplay than most other gacha games, so it's ok we get worse rewards, they said. Genshin is a casual game, they don't focus on gacha aspect as much as other gacha games, they said. Then HSR came out and finally opened their eyes. But it was too late by then. They've already developed a Stockholm syndrome, so they're not gonna do anything, even if hoyo publicly states they hate genshin and it's playerbase, it would literally do nothing.
Yup. And people think you are a try hard to see those glaring issues day one. I knew the game wasn't worth it but since I didn't get fed up before a year I kept playing. I used to be the one who actually thought people are overreacting to a free game giving less stuff. Mind you this was a year ago. Having played it for 2 years, I can confidently say that although I don't care if they give extra rewards or not, they should stop insulting the player base with such insignificant rewards. Complaining to the government has also caused the Japanese government to implement more legislation to protect the part-time workers of Japan with equal pay and other benefits previously only enjoyed by full-time employees as well as much more complicated stuff not worth mentioning in this comment. I don't play these but I played a lot of Maplestory, and your expectation reminded me of everytime a huge controvesy happened and then it became so common that players started planning their progress around the "oops we sorry" boxes that we knew we would get every fuck up.
I only play HSR, was never interested in Genshin. It was hilarious when Dr.Ratio news dropped and the entire HSR community went to tease the hell out of Genshin fans. You know, like siblings' fight. Then the news of those measely 3 pulls aired and I was like, wow, one sibling is actually abused by parents, suddenly it's really sad. Although still entertaining.

I really do hope a change in management occurs. Apparently HI3 players said that for the first 3 years they got bad rewards as well, but then after that everything started to pick up. Recently some people have looked into and found out that the head of the HI3 dev team was changed at around the same time and is now the head of the Genshin dev team. It's probably just a coincidence, but it's a awfully weird one. Meanwhile one person is the head of the HI3 and HSR teams and both games are doing well. I for one don't really care about the free stuff, but it is upsetting seeing QoL things the Genshin community has been asking for implemented in their other games.

It's the same thing that happened with their anniversary event. People get their expectations too damn high, don't get everything they want, and make a huge spectacle out of it when it's not really a big deal.
Genshin has a lot of good will to make up because GI is always going to be compared to HSR (and HI3 to a lesser extent), and the comparisons are only going to get worse when ZZZ and WuWa come out. If GI really wants to take a step in the right direction I think they would need to do the following: 1. Free standard banner 5 star of our choice. 2. Release free pulls (like how HSR does) Cant wait to see the shit show that errupts when HSR gets a way better anniversary then what GI could ever have and I look forward to Mujin's video on it.

I play both Genshin and Star Rail, and the amount of five stars i've got in genshin (as a f2p player) in THREE years, is less than the amount of five stars characters (as a f2p player) IN STAR RAIL IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR, BECAUSE I STARTED PLAYING MONTHS LATER THAN WHEN IT WAS REALEASED

Part of the reason is because of Star Rail being far more rewarding with their rewards There's a good reason why people compare Star Rail to Genshin, it's because of the many mechanics and UI similarities far more than Honkai 3rd and so here's a list of things/mechanics that Star Rail has that Genshin still doesn't have (and vice versa) Here's Star Rail (the ones I can remember) -240 Resin with a reserve resin system that stores upto 2400 resin after the normal one is filled with each resin being refilled every 18 mins for the reserve -weekly bosses can be done a total of 3 times instead of being able to claim it's rewards only once -every boss in the game (including weekly bosses) cost 30 resin -resin refills in 6 mins (Genshin takes 8 mins) -daily commissions get completed if you just burn your resin -bp is 70 levels (after 50 lvl you get 10k mora per level) -auto battle -with a recent change, you can now do floor 11 equivalent and floor 9 and 10 get completed automatically -floor 13 equivalent added in Star Rail -New type of endgame added other than abyss -10 free pulls every patch -you can do the big events of the patch completely (like Lantern Rite or the current Film shooting event involving Cheveruse equivalent) starting from day one rather than them being time gated -Self modeling resin, an item that allows you to craft any artifact with your desired main stat -strongbox has every artifact in the game as soon as they are added, you don't have to wait until major world updates for new sets to be added -shop has 5 star standard weapons to buy -you are given different dialogue options rather than same dialogue option in different voice (active/passive) when choosing a dialogue -every event has more primos, 2.5k primos from the main event (Genshin gives 980-1040) and 640 from side events (Genshin gives 420) -A history system during story that allows you to see all the dialogues of the current talking (imagine you are talking with an npc and you accidentally skipped their sentence, there's a button in the corner that shows you the history of all the dialogues that just occured) -Star Rail gives you a beginner banner that gives you a guaranteed five star after 50 pulls (discounted, every 10 pull costs only 8 fates so technically you are spending only 40 fates) -5 star selector on standard banner once you reach 300 pulls -You can play past events and gain some of the rewards as well (about 640-800 primos worth) -your choices matter, you can quite literally skip a characters story quest if you distrust them (specifically speaking, it was KAFKA'S) and still gain the rewards -Simulated Universe which resets every week that gives 225 primos and a STANDARD BANNER TICKET, 300k mora and a special ticket that if collected over time, you can buy some f2p 5 star weapon which are pretty goddarn useful -story quests give 110-120 primos instead of 65-70 For Genshin -you can afford to put an off piece artifact and still complete the 4p set you want on the character -bigger world to explore (negative or positive depending on how you see it) -live combat rather than turn based (depends on taste of the person playing) ...I can't think of anything else Edit - making some changes cuz Star Rail has...even more stuff💀 The new changed/stuff added is as followed -the reserve resin being 2400 not 1800 -character ascension is FAR easier as to ascend a character you need to only do bosses and have some enemy mats which you can gain from expeditions unlike Genshin where you also need local materials, gemstones -talent domains are available at all days rather than being available at only some days -you can interact with characters out of story at specific locations at any time -in 2.0, they are adding a timeline system that shows you shen each trailblaze quest took place -there is only one featured weapon in the weapon banner meaning if you lose 50/50 once then next time you get a five star, it's guaranteed to be the one you want rather than having two weapons and epitomised path like Genshin
Also for the people who say that Star Rail gives out free 10 pulls every patch is because they don't have as much exploration, I decided calculate how much both the games give as well in their respective new patches, here's the results (including commissions but not including Welkin or achievements) It's a total of 14k worth of primos which is 88 pulls Meanwhile in Genshin you get 11.5k which is 72 pulls Note - this includes the potential new area giving atleast a 18-20 pull worth of primos in Genshin meanwhile in Star Rail, you get about 3.5-4 pulls per new area in a patch but it doesn't matter given Star Rail gives a lot more from other places Additional note - there's a possibility that Genshin's is wrong but I doubt it's by a huge margin Additional note 2 - This isn't for completely new world patches like Penacony (Star Rail) or Fontaine (Genshin) but for the 1.x or 4.x patches for both the games respectively
Great and informative coverage! As crazy as the fanbase is and how angry they are, anger makes a great driver for engagement so unless genshin loses actual daily active users and revenue the “controversy” might actually serve as free marketing for the game itself.
I mean i think the rewards are complete bs but it's not like im gonna im just gonna uninstall genshin and play reverse 1999 instead. I actually interviewed for Mihoyo when they were recruiting for Genshin before it came out. From what I learnt, when they put you in a project, you are there for the entire duration of your employment. So if I were to guess right, the reason Star Rail has better giveaway than Genshin is because of the project lead or manager are 2 completely different people.
The producers for the games are different. Our producer USED to be the producer for HI3, gave dogshit rewards just as Genshin had, apparently almost killed the game, and then jumped ship to Genshin to let HSR's current producer take the lead. Only then did HI3 started being more generous. There's a very clear common cause here.
The team director for the two honkai games is the same, and the dude currently in charge of genshin used to oversee Honkai Impact, so you're not wrong based off what we can infer on how the games portrayed themselves to the playerbase

The thing is Genshin has always been real nasty with their Lantern Rite and Anniversary rewards. It's just that now a game of their own has better rewards subjectively better content, fans are now starting to realise that they are not getting treated well.

ToF was a missed chance, but seeing WW beta I'm 100% sure Genshin specifically will have a run for their money. My bf and i started Star Rail together and i can say, after 2 months, he is the only one who still (rather enthusiastically) plays. I dropped it after not even a week. Exploration is really important to me and SR just lacks that.

A popular mobile game is losing users? Why? It's always the same reason. Devs got greedy (because persuing profit ruins games) and players feel unappreciated, likely for good reason. It's always the same story with mobile games.

So this what’s happening in Genshin now. Makes me feel even better on leaving the game last year.
My overall experience got boring eventually: the desert regions (left during that hourglass event thing or whatever), combat loop (QE Swap until DPS), artifact farming, constantly shoving TCG in our face, no skip dialogue option, same events, and full exploration locked behind some boring quests.
Getting Genshin out of my daily life is like having a burden lifted off my shoulders. Don’t have to play a game like it’s a chore anymore.

As for "more gems from exploration", no it didn't balance it out, at all. This is because star rail has 75-25 gacha rate (statistically that's one in four losses) as compared to the dog***t 50/50 of genshin. I had a new character and it's signature every update in HSR without spending any cash, in genshin I still have to save up for my fav character with welkyn and BP.

The reason Genshin is not changing stuff is because the vast majority of the people doing the surveys in the game do not care about the things all the people on social media want. Remember, Genshin has 60 million monthly active players outside of China, and only like 5 million people active on social media at best.
Every survey I simply forget whatever ideas I have for feedback. This time, the first time I did the survey was my alt, so, it was kinda empty, but before logging into my main I decided I was gonna remember what I had to say and sent some feedback about endgame content etc

I'm so happy I quit right after finishing Inazuma. I didn't play for over a year, and now when I tried coming back, There was so much content I would have to go through, that I cannot be bothered to do all the unlocking and map exploring slog to even be ABLE to play any event, the game just straight up doesn't let me play some events, because I am so far behind on the Archon quest lines. I'm happy for it.

I feel like their silence about this issue is them checking the waters of what could happen to the version release if they did nothing; would everyone continue to play? When it happened first, I was a bit disappointed, but this prepared me for the second time. And as promised: The 2 aniversary rewards were on par with the stuff you get in the first 30 minutes playing the game. I remember playing genshin 1.0 and dropped it because the rewards were so meager. Star rail on the other hand had given me 3 5 star characters within the 1st day and gave 80 free pulls on release. Every major patch gives 10 free pulls and events loaded of premium currency. You can really feel the difference in treatment with the 2 games.

1. There are two main people at hoyoverse. One of them used to run Honkai Impact and that when the reward were dog crap, but now he runs Genshin. The other one has taken over Honkai Impact and is running starrail. We’re the reward right now, ARE GREAT! So part and probably a lot of this is due to the management.
2. For context; In my mandarin class we are aloud to play Chinese games and a few months ago, we all made a new or just a genshin account on our school device(we were not allowed to use any account made before it) but we had to play only in Chinese. My mandarin teacher even made an account! But about 4 days ago now, she decided “hey it’s the lunar new year event, why don’t we watch the live stream!” And yeah so… you probably can probably guess what came after that 😭

I wouldnt mind returning but the inability to skip cutscenes and actual ingame cutscene/story archive keeps me away. By the time I get through a few quests, Ive pushed the buttons so damn much thanks to the dialogue that I dont even feel like playing anymore.
It's not even about the rewards. They should have done literally nothing, or just been silent and just put the fates in there silently and this wouldn't have been as explosive. It's insulting. Three years Genshin has bankrolled this company, propelling it into international, global corporation status granting it far, far more profits than the 100 million required to make it, cost. They've printed money hand over foot, and they can't give more than THREE fates extra to show appreciation? To make matters worse, HSR, their NEWER game got a free five star LIMITED five star handed to them for free, and a great character, to boot! This is while Genshin fans have been BEGGING for a standard banner selector, that wouldn't even hurt profits since you lost 5050 to them ANYWAYS so it wouldn't do anything to their profits. It'd be just a show of good will.

my theory is honkai star rail has all the nice rewards/qol features genshin players have been asking for, as mihoyo's way of pushing players to sign up for hsr instead. now they're slowing bringing these things into genshin (e.g. expedition claim) they want to encourage players to come back so now you have people playing both games. in reality both games of course have different managers but yeah just a theory

You mentioned that zhongli was the only character to be buffed, ever. and whislt that is true, I like to mention the fact that genshin impact is secretly NERFING characters. Lisa's defense reduction which she gains from level 60/70 was 30% (I remember someone making a video of dps qiqi, and they used lisa, and it said 30%) to 15%. Rosaria's talent (also from level 60/70) gained a cap for the crit rate boost. it now sits at a max of 15% crit rate. Yelan's talent (again, from level 60/70) used to be a grand total of 200% damage increase, but got nerfed to be 50% instead.

I mean if it is illegal, gacha games that have PVP like Epic Seven would never nerf some characters and instead will only offer buffs.

It's so true about Mihoyo being deaf to players' feedback; I've experienced it myself sending feedback about possible bugs and being answered within 24-hours, but being ignored when it's about game QoL or game improvement (not even an automatic "We'll take that into account").
I consider myself a veteran gacha gamer, and every other game I've played gives enough rolls to get a high rating character (5★/SSR/UR/etc) during special events such as the game's anniversary, but Genshin not only gives meager rewards, but it keeps giving the same over and over every year, without change.
Another thing I don't like about Genshin's game development, is the 6-week wait for the updates, when the content added can be completed in a weekend or so, leaving a 5-week wait for the next batch of quests. Event's give so few rewards (less than 2 rolls per event) and most event's backstories are so irrelevant to the main story and lore that I don't take them into account.
Also, the lack of endgame content turns the game kinda irrelevant, so you do the dailies, and consume your resin in domains, at most, and then log-out, and that takes no more than 15-20 minutes a day.
I have spent millions on my account. Tried to get it back with proof of my purchase and account. Email their official support email and never received feedback
If it's any consolation, that last bit you mention about small amounts of content being interspersed between month-long content droughts applies to Star Rail as well. I actually thought that wasn't the case for Genshin (I never played Genshin cuz I didn't care for the setting), but this video has really been an eye-opener when it comes to how Hoyo treats their fans in general. The fact that Star Rail can be so nice despite riding the coattails of Genshin is insane to me.

I'mma play devil's advocate and say that is probably the best case scenario, I mean I remember hearing that the devs behind WoW gave up on fixing the inventory (or giving more slots, can't remember which) because the code was so ingrained in everything that it would screw up the whole gane if they tried to modify it. Same thing with Bungie for Destiny 2, they removed a lot of content because it was getting too much to manage with every patch they added more and more stuff. So the fact that we have not lost anything in the game besides events shows that the devs are working their ass off to make sure they don't have to do the same thing as Blizzard or Bungie. And to the people who say that they had Honkai Impact 3rd to learn from, not really. Da Wei himself said that the Genshin Impact team was young and inexperienced, they're not veterans from the HI3 team. So they were also growing alongside Genshin, and are probably stuck fixing all of their messed up code since the beginning of the game while also giving us a ton of stuff to do every 6 weeks.

I don't play these but I played a lot of Maplestory, and your expectation reminded me of everytime a huge controvesy happened and then it became so common that players started planning their progress around the "oops we sorry" boxes that we knew we would get every fuck up.
I only play HSR, was never interested in Genshin. It was hilarious when Dr.Ratio news dropped and the entire HSR community went to tease the hell out of Genshin fans. You know, like siblings' fight. Then the news of those measely 3 pulls aired and I was like, wow, one sibling is actually abused by parents, suddenly it's really sad.
Although still entertaining.

That's not the problem. The issue lies in their inability or not wanting to listen and communicate with their fanbase. It's not like giving out rewards to the players would ruin them, they would most likely gain financially as it would attract trust and loyalty amongst the players - thus more revenue. I really do hope a change in management occurs. Apparently HI3 players said that for the first 3 years they got bad rewards as well, but then after that everything started to pick up. Recently some people have looked into and found out that the head of the HI3 dev team was changed at around the same time and is now the head of the Genshin dev team. It's probably just a coincidence, but it's a awfully weird one. Meanwhile one person is the head of the HI3 and HSR teams and both games are doing well. I for one don't really care about the free stuff, but it is upsetting seeing QoL things the Genshin community has been asking for implemented in their other games.

It's the same thing that happened with their anniversary event. People get their expectations too damn high, don't get everything they want, and make a huge spectacle out of it when it's not really a big deal.
Genshin has a lot of good will to make up because GI is always going to be compared to HSR (and HI3 to a lesser extent), and the comparisons are only going to get worse when ZZZ and WuWa come out. If GI really wants to take a step in the right direction I think they would need to do the following:
1. Free standard banner 5 star of our choice.
2. Release free pulls (like how HSR does)
Cant wait to see the shit show that errupts when HSR gets a way better anniversary then what GI could ever have and I look forward to Mujin's video on it.
Whats more funny is wuwa do a dev stream around the same time as genshin stream and the whole point of that video is we listen to player input and will make the game better
Or they are saving the "free 5 star" to be Dainsleif once we have to go to Khaenri'ah and need to use his non-elemental powers, which is why they don't want to give us a free 5 star now.
I would rather not have free pulls or a free five star, I don't know why people truly want a free five star when the number one thing we need are QoL updates, Endgame content, etc.

I play both Genshin and Star Rail, and the amount of five stars i've got in genshin (as a f2p player) in THREE years, is less than the amount of five stars characters (as a f2p player) IN STAR RAIL IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR, BECAUSE I STARTED PLAYING MONTHS LATER THAN WHEN IT WAS REALEASED
Idc about what they do anymore they totally deserve losing millions of followers and more, i also quit genshin like a month ago... Hope Duet night abyss and Wuthering waves will be great games...

Gonna just paste this here from my comment from Tuonto's video. Part of the reason is because of Star Rail being far more rewarding with their rewards
There's a good reason why people compare Star Rail to Genshin, it's because of the many mechanics and UI similarities far more than Honkai 3rd and so here's a list of things/mechanics that Star Rail has that Genshin still doesn't have (and vice versa)
Here's Star Rail (the ones I can remember)
-240 Resin with a reserve resin system that stores upto 2400 resin after the normal one is filled with each resin being refilled every 18 mins for the reserve
-weekly bosses can be done a total of 3 times instead of being able to claim it's rewards only once
-every boss in the game (including weekly bosses) cost 30 resin
-resin refills in 6 mins (Genshin takes 8 mins)
-daily commissions get completed if you just burn your resin
-bp is 70 levels (after 50 lvl you get 10k mora per level)
-auto battle
-with a recent change, you can now do floor 11 equivalent and floor 9 and 10 get completed automatically
-floor 13 equivalent added in Star Rail
-New type of endgame added other than abyss
-10 free pulls every patch
-you can do the big events of the patch completely (like Lantern Rite or the current Film shooting event involving Cheveruse equivalent) starting from day one rather than them being time gated
-Self modeling resin, an item that allows you to craft any artifact with your desired main stat
-strongbox has every artifact in the game as soon as they are added, you don't have to wait until major world updates for new sets to be added
-shop has 5 star standard weapons to buy
-you are given different dialogue options rather than same dialogue option in different voice (active/passive) when choosing a dialogue
-every event has more primos, 2.5k primos from the main event (Genshin gives 980-1040) and 640 from side events (Genshin gives 420)
-A history system during story that allows you to see all the dialogues of the current talking (imagine you are talking with an npc and you accidentally skipped their sentence, there's a button in the corner that shows you the history of all the dialogues that just occured)
-Star Rail gives you a beginner banner that gives you a guaranteed five star after 50 pulls (discounted, every 10 pull costs only 8 fates so technically you are spending only 40 fates)
-5 star selector on standard banner once you reach 300 pulls
-You can play past events and gain some of the rewards as well (about 640-800 primos worth)
-your choices matter, you can quite literally skip a characters story quest if you distrust them (specifically speaking, it was KAFKA'S) and still gain the rewards
-Simulated Universe which resets every week that gives 225 primos and a STANDARD BANNER TICKET, 300k mora and a special ticket that if collected over time, you can buy some f2p 5 star weapon which are pretty goddarn useful
-story quests give 110-120 primos instead of 65-70
For Genshin
-you can afford to put an off piece artifact and still complete the 4p set you want on the character
-bigger world to explore (negative or positive depending on how you see it)
-live combat rather than turn based (depends on taste of the person playing)
...I can't think of anything else
Edit - making some changes cuz Star Rail has...even more stuff💀
The new changed/stuff added is as followed
-the reserve resin being 2400 not 1800
-character ascension is FAR easier as to ascend a character you need to only do bosses and have some enemy mats which you can gain from expeditions unlike Genshin where you also need local materials, gemstones
-talent domains are available at all days rather than being available at only some days
-you can interact with characters out of story at specific locations at any time
-in 2.0, they are adding a timeline system that shows you shen each trailblaze quest took place
-there is only one featured weapon in the weapon banner meaning if you lose 50/50 once then next time you get a five star, it's guaranteed to be the one you want rather than having two weapons and epitomised path like Genshin
Also for the people who say that Star Rail gives out free 10 pulls every patch is because they don't have as much exploration, I decided calculate how much both the games give as well in their respective new patches, here's the results
(including commissions but not including Welkin or achievements)
It's a total of 14k worth of primos which is 88 pulls
Meanwhile in Genshin you get 11.5k which is 72 pulls
Note - this includes the potential new area giving atleast a 18-20 pull worth of primos in Genshin meanwhile in Star Rail, you get about 3.5-4 pulls per new area in a patch but it doesn't matter given Star Rail gives a lot more from other places
Additional note - there's a possibility that Genshin's is wrong but I doubt it's by a huge margin
Additional note 2 - This isn't for completely new world patches like Penacony (Star Rail) or Fontaine (Genshin) but for the 1.x or 4.x patches for both the games respectively

As crazy as the fanbase is and how angry they are, anger makes a great driver for engagement so unless genshin loses actual daily active users and revenue the “controversy” might actually serve as free marketing for the game itself.
I mean i think the rewards are complete bs but it's not like im gonna im just gonna uninstall genshin and play reverse 1999 instead. Players have habits which are trained and as much as i hate the abusive relationship, im also invested so much time into that game i wont just suddenly stop.
Thankfully im a f2p player so only thing i lose is my time if the game shuts down tmr
