- Another under-appreciated West Bend based engine. Does this thing look like it’s 1960 or what!? So cool…
**CORRECTION** This engine actually ways only 57lbs!
These particular Firestones were made at West Bend’s Canadian I believe. The power head is similar to the 7.5 Elgins, made by West Bend, all the way back to the early 50’s. They originally had a gravity fed system on them where as this one has a fuel pump as they did from 1955 up when West Bend was selling engines under their own name in the USA. I have a video of my 1956 West Bend 7.5 listed if you want to view it for comparison sake.
From 1939-42 Firestone outboards were made by Champion.
From 1946-59 Firestones were made by Scott-Atwater.
In 1960 Firestone signed a contract with West Bend, this ended in 1962.
From 1963-65, Firestone dropped most of their engine line and only offered a 5hp model made by Clinton. The writing was on the wall at that point.
Of all the eras of Firestone outboards my preference is the West Bend era. If you find one, SAVE IT, you won’t be disappointed. Авто/Мото
I love the look and sound of these old motors!
Me too! And each brand has its own unique style and sound.
You have been posting some really great videos. This thing ran like dream. A little history on it would be great. Beautiful outboard.
Thanks for your input. I’ll either edit the info on the video or make another video.
What a beauty!
One of my favorites!
These are great little motors. I've not seen the 8 hp in action. Great runner, your making good speed with it. I've got a couple of 12 hp versions. They run strong
The 12’s are great too. West Bends in general are definitely in my top three outboard favorites. Enjoy!
Nice and great restore job. Years ago, as a kid, I was given a West Bend Eight. Had all the ball knobs and little door up front so you could quickly make a carb adjustment. Same style gear shift but it had a left/right lever on the front. Even had a West Bend "badge" that could be lit up at night! Ran on 2 D cells! Crazy. Mine met it's demise when the gearcase froze up over a winter and just busted it all up. I was too young to know about gear lube inspection/draining. It did run good while it lasted.
Thank you. I actually have another video posted of my 18hp West Bend that is exactly as you described if you want to relive your youth.
👍👍................
I had an evinrude 8 hp around the same year and you could not kill that thing. Wish I still had it
I agree, the 5.5 fisherman and 7.5 fleetwin were amazing running engines!
I let a Viscount 12 slide through my hands (arrgggh!) but did keep a WB Stone Viscount 40!! It's waiting. I'd imagine the largest ones sold the least
Oh man, you should have saved the 12! I’ve seen other 12’s, and one 40, but never the 8 like mine for some reason.
@@GearHeadJP I've seen a West Bend Firestone 2, there must be a 6 and an 18 also.
I believe West Bend made a 2, 5, 7.5, 8, 12, 25, and 40hp for Firestone from 1960-64 with different models available different years.
Sounds like a 4horse very happy Johnson
Im in love ❤️ 😍 😮
15-18kts that's pretty respectable
3:10 totally Opposed firing order, like a total 188 for 2 stroke, or 360 for 4. I'm pretty sure there's too stroke though. Still a sweet little outboard😂
I’m pretty fond of it too!
@@GearHeadJP eye love this thing, hope to score one some day fer my 15 footer
Nice!
Thanks!
Love your videos. That thing runs great. What kind of boat is that and what size
Thanks. It’s a 1983 Sea Nymph 12K.
Nice one. That's the deluxe model. I have the econo Sears model from 59. Looks like a big mail box.
Haha. This one is one of my favorites. The cowling fitment is amazing and I really like the details.
@@GearHeadJP any idea when Chrysler took over West Bend?
1965
Ok, thanks
That beast packs a punch for sure. Looks like brand new, is it original?
Original colors, but I completely refurbished it mechanically and cosmetically. It had some mice inhabitants and was locked up solid.
My boy just bought a 7.5 firestone special. It's complete and runs. I'm looking for the side decals as the are the same as yours. Any leads to where i can get them?
I had them made by a local sign shop.
@@GearHeadJP do you have the decal file ?
No unfortunately.
