    Great review, do you think the end link bracelet interface issue is because it's the same bracelet as a on a ceramic sub with the squarer lugs but the case on the SD4000 has more sculpted lugs?

    Okay, saturation diving; which this watch was designed to deal with…you do your dive, usually after having emerged from an underwater environment. The watch is exposed to sea water depth-pressures of say 600 feet, but is not exposed to the Helium atoms which create the problem or need for the Helium escape valve. Now the dive is over; you leave the ocean and renter the underwater environment, but this time specifically a decompression chamber. The chamber initially mimics the deep pressures experienced in the dives. The chamber is also filled with a high percentage of Helium gas (again to mimic the conditions your body was experiencing during the deep dives). Now, though, so is your watch dealing with this pressurized Helium. Some of that Helium gets into the watch, because of the high pressure and the small size of Helium atoms. As the decompression chamber ascends (reduces pressure), over many hours, the Helium inside the watch sometimes can not get out fast enough to avoid an over pressure inside the watch, possibly resorting in the crystal popping off. The diver could simply unscrew the crown. Remember, he’s now in a decompression chamber. He’s not in the water. But what if he forgets; then the watch could be damaged. The Helium escape valve is an automatic way to deal with this issue, in the event the diver forgets to unscrew the crown.

    very probably an excellent timepiece with great engineering, I do prefer the 16600 preceramic. also do remember that scuba divers nowadays use dive computers, not luxury watches. personally, I favour the discontinued sword hands seamasters, as they look as good as any rolex but only measure 11.5 mm in height. much better for everyday wear.

    One final note. I believe they only made it for 30 months. Future collectors will pay any amount for this perfectly designed watch that was left behind to satisfy the silly marketing of this current season of useless oversized watch cases which no one will want in the future.

  • @Tommyturtle-ft9gk
    @Tommyturtle-ft9gk 7 лет назад +1

    Great review..... now (after Baselworld and the Rolex new SD announcement) these 40mm SD's are the latest 'must have' hot watch. Witness the silly inflated prices and shennanigans for NOS and fools scrambling for watches which a month ago you could get a discount on!
    This will probably become the classic SD. When the current frenzy dies down - and when the new SD's start being delivered - there will be more stock coming onto second hand market and they will be well worth picking up if the prices adjust back to normal in 6-12 months.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  7 лет назад

      Tommyturtle1961 Well, I don't see it as silly, I see it as normal practise with such things personally. The SD has always been underrated and to me is the best watch rolex make; well, made. It ran from mid 2014 to November or so 2016 and it's not until you can't buy something that you truly appreciate it. Time will tell if it was a good investment for people, but at least if they don't achieve anything else, they'll have a wonderful watch to wear and own.

    • @Tommyturtle-ft9gk
      @Tommyturtle-ft9gk 7 лет назад +1

      I have one (2016) which I admit on the one hand means I'm happy to see the current frenzy and rising prices! (I do see some being offered at raving mad prices, but they don't seem to be selling at those levels!)
      I agree with you, it is the perfect watch of its type and it wears so well. Regarding the new version, I personally hate the fact they've gone bigger and added a cyclops but many will disagree with me. My advice for anyone wanting to add an SD 4000c 40mm to their collection is wait out the current price bounce and pick one up when more become available i.e. get traded out by buyers of the new model. It will probably take a few years but - for the reasons you have highlighted so well - this watch will become a real classic.

  • @chrislj2890
    @chrislj2890 7 лет назад +6

    An automatic with quartz accuracy; now that was a keeper. I think it looks so much better without a cyclops, and it's still very legible. I like the fact that Rolex hasn't gone with display backs when it has no benefit. I don't understand why so many Seiko and other watches have a clear back and the movement is so mundane looking.
    Being a guy with smaller wrists, I prefer downward sloping lugs and a short clasp, which Rolex doesn't seem incorporate in their watches. I guess that's why Seikos seem to be the most comfortable for me. Nice review.

  • @andrewholt3849
    @andrewholt3849 7 лет назад

    Very nice watch, come to the conclusion that it's one of the best Rolex models from the point of view of waterproofness and the excellent clasp, although I was disheartened to hear the fliplock extension links, which from memory were also available on the Rolex Submariners of 20-years-ago is uncomfortable? Do you do your own bracelet adjustments, taking links out yourself? You mention a 1.5mm screwdriver, that's the width of the top. You could do a post using this, to demonstrate. I think the crystal would only blow off in a dive chamber for decompresssion, not out in the sea.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  7 лет назад

      You're right about the crystal, I apologise. Yes I think it's a 1.6mm screwdriver and I always adjust m,y own bracelets. If I mess up, it's my fault but if a staff member in a store messes up, it would annoy me much more. Someone scratched a watch once and I asked for a refund.

  • @leifdehio2151

    Beautiful watch and I like it far better than the Submariner. I almost bought one, however in a side by side comparison with the Tudor Pelagos featuring the MT5612 inhouse movement, I decided to go with the latter. The proportions of the Pelagos felt better, the quality and micro adjustment capabilities of the bracelet felt better, the lumed bezel is a winner and I do love the 72hr power reserve as well as the accuracy of the movement (+/- 0 seconds as well here). I also like the satinized finish of the Pelagos, however the Titanium used in the case and the bracelet, does tend to be a scratch magnet.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Leif. I've had a couple of Pelagos. On my wrist it's too large. I like the model, having had one of the first available anywhere, but on my wrist it sits awkwardly due to the thin case-back, and I genuinely didn't find any benefit to the clasp; I'd hoped to but it just didn't work for me. I also prefer at least a little bit of shine to my watches as well, and the fact everything is so matte on the Tudor just didn't appeal. The blue one is a bit nicer than the black, and I agree the power reserve is cool, but I'm genuinely happy with 40 hours plus as long as it's a watch I wear quite often; the SDc is so good I could wear this and nothing else!

    Too bad I already had a 2003 SeaDweller, the last year Rolex put holes in the case, so when I bought my second Rolex earlier this year I bought the blue dial YachtMaster. It's on the line of the Sub/SeaDweller the YachtMaster is a sport watch not as water depth resistant, 100M, and it is more of a dressy watch. I have wanted a dress watch as I have all sport models, so the YachtMaster filled that need. I would have liked to get this version of the SeaDweller I like the Maxi dial. Check your SeaDweller in the dark it will look like the dial is floating due to how the lume reflects off the rehaut. I believe Rolex did this by design the Maxi dial watches seem to have this effect.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  7 лет назад +1

      +ryvr madduck I recently had a blue yacht-master. Totally stunning, but it's the everyday appeal that the SDc always wins me over with that's all. It's silly but I always worry about damaging the bezel on the YM, but I do love how it looks. Your two watches make a great combo.

    Could watch reviewers start including the standard weight with all links added on as it is a major driver for watch buyers to flip / sell off to another model (ie Ceramic Seadweller 4k 116600 is 173grams which is uncomfortable / top heavy and main reason why no date sub is more day to day wearable (134 grams).

      @WatchHobbyist  7 лет назад +1

      The DSSD is much larger and heavier, plus I've seen some with scratched crystals due to the dome. The clasp is better on the DSSD though and the crystal reflects less, but the 116600 is hard to beat as an "everything" watch

    • @ripperx444
      @ripperx444 7 лет назад +1

      Watch Hobbyist I absolutely love my Deepsea. I removed the divers extension and added links and it fits 100% perfect. It's a little hefty but it has never ever flopped around my wrist as other say it does. Maybe because I have flat wrist so it sits nicely and they aren't super thick so the bracelet sits fine before the taper has any effect. Overall it's by far my favorite Rolex. I'll check out the new seadweller that just came out a few days ago and see maybe I'll trade for it later.

      +Brummyred
      Hey man, I hope you have the funds to get one right now because you shouldn't be waiting. I just bought mine (last few pieces from my local Rolex AD and a special serial number kept for me by someone in Rolex) last month after seeing the news from Baselworld 17'. I had it at the back of my mind for more than a year, I always wanted to experience buying a brand new modern rolex from a rolex store. I've been buying vintage rolexes and some other great brands over the years from auction houses.. but I always wanted one modern rolex made with new production and materials. I've owned many watches and sold many watches, due to being tired of how it's easy to get into a community in the watch culture that can sometimes be pretty ridiculous (eg. irregular/off printed dials commanding double price premiums). I've learnt and grown, left the watch scene for years and came back.
      But when I came back, I didn't see a single watch I liked. I'm not over critical over stuff like date windows and all that, but many modern watches are often over-designed.
      This was the one I picked up from the display out of curiosity over a year ago(didn't buy it til now cos I was worried about getting more stuff I don't really need) and I never expected it to fit so perfectly on the wrist, it has this extremely subtle vibe to it. It's unique case dimensions and size of lugs, I would have never dared dream for a better fit and proportion. It is different from every single sport rolex in history. Full black and white scheme, you really cannot go wrong with that. Fully graduated bezel that has this silent reference to the old militarysubs. Full Solid links to balance the weight of a thicker case. Glidelock clasp. Date window for modern daily practicality but no magnifier, another silent reference to the original sea dwellers. The dial is higher and closer to the crystal than any other sport/non sport rolex, which gives it an extremely subtle classiness and elegance, very unusual. Semi Matte finish dial, a more obvious reference to the original prototype/double red sea dwellers. The crystal is slightly above the bezel height too, unlike other modern rolexes. The bezel's grip is actually machined shallower than all other rolexes (you need a macro lens to see the difference) meaning that while on the wrist, it reflects less light and is much less obvious that you're wearing a rolex. Triplock crown.
      All of this in all black, 40mm. With a production run of 3 years(one of the shortest, ever.) and weak sales, you can bet my grandchildren would be paying easily double the price from collectors by then.
      I apologise for the long winded text, but if you have a chance do grab one up now. It is the most understated, handsome, perfectly balanced and proportionate, rugged and practical rolex tool watches you can buy. I know the kind of people who appreciate this watch aren't the sort that flips watches or buys them for "investment".. I believe they are usually more grounded and simple men.. but Rolex has a track record of having the most oddball and unnoticed tool watches(during their time) become their most sought after collector's pieces many years later because they have a certain Personality that takes one to deliberately notice it. Paul Newman daytonas were regarded as ugly and weird when they launched.. now they are sold for a very ridiculously overpriced six digit prices these days and yes, they are Always sold at that price. If you always wanted a nice watch, something that represents your heart for how far you've come in life, professionally or personally, without necessarily telling others about it.. a watch that you can wear in the heat and cold, office or outdoors and not worry at all about it, this is the one to go for. It is not fancy, and that is why it is special. Better get one now while it is in the phase of discontinuing before the new 43mm red text sd with magnifier takes over end of this year.

    • @ripperx444
      @ripperx444 7 лет назад

      popcorny11 are you talking to me? If so I was talking about trading my deapsea for the new seadweller 43mm. It's a thing I might do but as of now the deepsea is amazin and I wear it as my daily watch!

    • @popcorny11
      @popcorny11 7 лет назад

      +ripperx444
      No I was referring to the original comment of +Brummyred considering buying the 116600.
      But yeah, Deepsea is a fantastic rolex imo.. one of the only few unique watches they've made in the last decade. I'm not above 6 foot so I wouldn't even consider it ha! Also because I need my watches to be reasonably wearable under a suit for daily use. If you're wearing the black one, you can consider but I don't feel you should trade it for the new one. If you're wearing the blue dial/green text one, don't even let it go for the new sd because you're wearing a pretty valuable watch that is currently very slowly appreciating.
      Deepsea production numbers are very low. Deepseas have been sold out at ADs for a long time.
      The new seadweller 43mm will be produced for a long time and with a red text line, they know the demand will be high hence a slightly larger supply in preparation for that.. although I'm also very sure they will control the supply to maintain the watch's value(similar to last year's black/white steel daytonas).
      The deepsea is also now the only modern sport rolex left with no magnifier, which is considered Very special amongst rolex scholars and collectors.
      Of course, maybe all these info is not relevant or important to you my friend, but if I owned the Deepsea myself, I would never sell it. The technology, research and development, history makes it a very special watch that is Very true and honest to it's roots. I'm a huge fan of the rolex explorer 2 but i would never buy any model after the 1655.. because that is where it stopped being a watch specially built for it's original purpose. I can say that because I've spent almost half a year's salary on a very rare example back then, which I usually wear only with my wife.
      Honestly I'm not someone who picks on the smallest details as if every brand owes it to you to make your dream watch in your dream specs, but the new sd 43mm wasn't appealing for me at all because of the magnifier. It is a significant change from the history of the sd and for me, no "cyclops" gives the sd and deepsea a perfectly symmetrical look. If you really love the upcoming red text 43mm sd, maybe give it some time.. watch countless videos and read articles and keep up with it for at least a year before considering giving up your very special watch for it. Because if you do, it'll be difficult to get the Deepsea back.. and you'll prob waste some money doing it.

      I'm not so much a fan of the modern day Sub, but the 116600 is a true favourite of mine

    A highly expensive watch with the only basic functions of date, time, and bezel elapsed time. The chronometer lags behind the precision of the quartz movements. You have to pay thousands of dollars for this brand in exchange for a piece of wrist adornment to boost your social status. How about considering added features in saturation diving like DEPTH METER, NITROGEN LEVEL, TEMPERATURE, and ASCENT-DESCENT WARNING. These are life-saving parameters for all SCUBA DIVERS that ROLEX cannot provide and SURELY will NEVER provide. Nitrogen narcosis like "bends" and "chokes" are irreversible if the diver is not confined inside decompression chambers.

      This watch is more than enough for most divers, as is a Range Rover when it comes to being a great 4x4. However, whether you use the products for their marketed purpose is a different matter. Most divers I know will have a dive watch but use a computer for the main aspects of the dive. The watch is secondary these days, but nice to own and wear on a daily basis.

      Its a R O L E X. Not a dive computer. Ive been bent FYI! No high tech wrist watch could have helped me! Don't cry if you can't afford it!
