  • On today’s episode of Coaster Theory we catch the wave into Pipelines' underlying purpose and the reality behind this simple-seeming attraction. You see, we’ve failed to see the meaning behind it… and the ride it replaced. The Surf Coaster, innovated by Bolliger & Mabillard, the swiss coaster designer whose first coaster was in fact a stand-up named Iron Wolf. Pipeline has hit the masses, ranking in tens of millions of impressions across social media. SeaWorld doesn’t simply pluck such an marketable ride from the masses. Instead, the right pieces fell into place and you could say they caught the right wave.

    surf trains on old stand ups might night work because the surf coaster is made to utilize interesting layouts mixed with its unique trains to make for an awesome experience. I don't think we will see surf trains on other standups.

    I went on green lantern (first standup) and I did not understand at ALL the hate for standup coasters. It was undoubtedly more thrilling than floorless and floorless conversions. Like any inversion based coaster just keep ur head back to avoid banging (old b&ms, arrows, vekoma, etc...)

    • @OklahomaCoasterFan
      @OklahomaCoasterFan 7 месяцев назад +1

      For me, keeping my head back guaranteed that my head would pinball between the head restraints. Keeping my head forward, clearing my head from the restraints has worked almost without fail. Keeping your head back will work for some people, but if anyone else has found that it doesn't work for them, try keeping it forward instead.

    • @Sonic-gy7kq
      @Sonic-gy7kq 7 месяцев назад

      @@OklahomaCoasterFan I don't think I described it right. I keep my head back and push out of my restrain (like ur taking it off) using muscle to force my head back and not moving at all. Basically pushing you head back by pushing on the restraint. To the point your head doesn't move at all. I have heard that quite a bit but for me the whiplash would be worse and through those old arrow corkscrews (the literal worst) it'd always bang.

    2 things:
    1: i personally dont think surf trains would work on the standups we have still standing. surf trains are used for more gentle and air time focused layouts. the whole bouncing up and down idea wouldn't work on the standups we have today since they're focused on delivering positives
    2: this is a smaller thing but it wouldnt make sense for sea world to buy a package of 2 b&ms. we already know one's coming to bgt and they're probably getting ready for a drachen fire replacement, so it would make sense for that to be a b&m since they already have 2 b&ms confirmed to be coming. they most likely purchased a package of 3-4 b&m coasters to spread across the entire chain

    This speculation has been made before and most everyone came to the conclusion that the chassis of the surf coaster trains wouldn't fit on traditional stand-up coaster tracks without being entirely redesigned since the span between rails is significantly wider on old standups.

  • @EagleRyan14
    @EagleRyan14 7 месяцев назад +1

    I'm quite sure that B&M offered a two-for-one/bundle type deal with these. Why else would Sea World take on the risks of multiple prototypes? It works out well for both sides due to their history and SWO's prominent location!

    Seaworld parks and entertainement got that new inverted family coaster from B&M called Pheanix Rising, where the old Pheanix pirate ship ride used to be. So basically, SWP&E got three experimental coasters for a discounted price that were also at a bundled price.

    Have not ridden Surf coaster, but I did have the opportunity to ride Shockwave at KD before it closed, I think it did a MUCH better job of showing how you could do a more marketable stand-up coaster than any of the old-school B&Ms. They may have been extremely basic, but the loop and the helix were such unique experiences, versus Mantis and Green Lantern (the two older stand-ups I've been on) were just extremely forceful coasters held back by restraints that just didn't feel comfortable or intuitive to use. I think even if fixing one of the older models with new trains, they're still extremely forceful rides, so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

      Those would hurt. These coasters are made specifically for certain g-forces to hit certain parts of the body to provide a smooth ride, if you're sitting on a weird spot on the ride, it'd slam you around and you're gonna hurt more than it already would

    this coaster has a very uncomfortable seat. The seat isn't so bad when you are riding the ride, but once the ride is done and are waiting to go back in the station, assuming there are 3 trains running that day, you have to wait for that next train to launch which could take an extra 30 to 40 seconds, meaning you're sitting in a very uncomfortable seating position for a long time. If you're mindful of this, you can "brace" your knees an hold yourself up but you often don't think about that once the ride is over and the first reaction is to "relax" onto the seat, which sits you in that uncomfortable seating position that you can't get out of till you are back in the station and the restraints lift up.

    With Phoenix Rising, it opens the door for the 2 Sesame Place Parks to get them. Not as certain about my home park (by distance), Sesame Place Philadelphia (which is actually closer to New Jersey), getting one as much anymore with the BGW rumors for 2025 as a Drachen Fyre replacement/Big Bad Wolf reincarnation-although still very fitting. The park could have the first drop over a lake like Orkanen at Faroup Sommerland, which would be a nice backdrop. Sesame Place San Diego (which is closer to Mexico than Santa Fe Depot, but is at least in San Diego County) has a narrow strip that begins to open up after the theater they added that is part catering area/part boneyard I guess that could fit more dry rides without taking out another water slide (although removing the bowl slide for a path to expand on the other side of their currently only coaster would be nice)-but I think a coaster up there might dwarf the rest of the park so its more of a toss up vs the original Sesame Park vs the core 5

    Surf coaster trains would NOT work well on the older standup tracks.
    Pipeline is an airtime focused layout that utilizes the bouncy trains to bring you up out of your seat.
    The old layouts are not airtime focused at all. They have a ton of positives that would ruin the entire point of the new surf trains.

    Except they didn't make standing coasters comfortable. They made it far more uncomfortable. It's far more of a nut-crusher than their old ones. After the airtime, on the landings, your groin smashes hard on those perches. On the old ones, the restraints locked in place, so you could get those perches down low, where it's never a problem. Not the case with Pipeline. Plus, the upper body restraints are actually worse. No headbanging, which can be avoided with the old stand-ups, but instead with Pipeline, your collarbone will be crushed by those vests, and there's no avoiding it. Most B&M vests are awesome, but not Pipeline's. I rode it 6x on my visit a few weeks ago, trying to find a way to make it enjoyable, but couldn't. For me, it's a swing and a miss, a far worse version of their old model. If others love it more than me, then great. It's one of my favorite parks anywhere, so I don't want them to have a coaster that's a failure after the newness wears off. But I'll instead be on the better 5 coasters in the park, soon to be 6.

      If you haven’t tried this yet, the strategy that gave me and a friend a painless ride (for that region at least) was to stand on the platforms of your feet during restraint check & lock, kind of on your tiptoes but your heels are only an inch or so off the ground. Once the ride starts, keep your legs as straight as possible even during airtime moments. somehow prevented nut crushing

    • @OklahomaCoasterFan
      @OklahomaCoasterFan 7 месяцев назад

      @@t0x1cc1ty Great advice. It took me a few rides to figure that out about keeping my legs straight and pointing my toes for the landings. That worked. I got bad advice from other coaster youtubers, who said to kick your feet out. That means guaranteed nut crushing. That is terrible advice for us guys, and I paid the price on my first couple rides.
