  • Bolliger and Mabillard is the most game-changing coaster designer out there. Yes, companies like Intamin or RMC have created new innovative rides, but I don't think anything can make as big of an impact as the Invert, Standup, and Floorless have. In today's world of Hyper Hybrids and Multi Launch Shuttle Gigas, it is great to look back at a time when people would line up for hours to see the new best ride from B&M. The Invert was one of the company's biggest achievements, which led towards competitors taking inspiration and creating their own ‘suspended’ coasters. But we can't forget about the coasters that put B&M on the map… the standup and floorless. These rides were so advanced and brought something so original, parks were buying them left and right. Thanks to these coasters, B&M started work on today's show stealers, the Dive, Wing, Flying, Next-Gen Inverts, Hypers, and B&M large scale hypers we call Gigas. B&M doesn't go without its competition, a big competitor is Intamin. Intamin also pushed forth a new style of rides that would change the industry forever. They made a maverick, their first Blitz. An Intamin Blitz is a coaster that uses the LSM launch system to launch the train at least twice during its duration. This model blew up and is found in countries all around the world. Just like B&M's projects, companies would start to use this system for themselves to make their own launch coasters. B&M however, only dipped her toe in the launch coaster market by building ONE LSM coaster. While companies like Intamin, Premiere Rides, Vekoma, Rocky Mountain Construction, and Zerrier built these launch coasters, B&M continued to expand upon the models they already built, only parks were starting to want something else. Parks found more benefits to build launch coasters that could target every audience over the Dives, Sit Downs, and Standups. In return, B&M fixed up some of their models to make them more appealing to parks. They made their Dive coasters smaller for cheaper costs and to pack in more and bigger elements. Their inverts got a new restraint and featured new elements. They continued to make Wing and Flyers at the same rate because they were popular with some parks. Their hypers started selling much less than before, so they would build them taller. And of course, they would discontinue the Standup, and parks didn't want to buy Sitdowns. Even today B&M isn't selling as many rides as they used to, one of their most popular models, the Hyper only sold three in the last ten years. This isn't bad, because B&M is still making more than enough money to profit, but they aren't innovating as they used too, or so we thought. Behind the scenes at B&M, they started work on the Surf coaster, a new version of the multi-launch. In today's episode of Coaster Theory I tell you how the Surf Coaster could put B&M back one top.

Great video! Price I think will be a big factor when it comes to how successful this model is.
If the Surf Coaster is way more expensive than the other launch coasters, I think it might flop or will take a long time to get going.
Given the current situation I think it will be years until parks will want to get any of the B&M coaster models just because of how much they cost compared to other coaster models by other manufacturers. I hope the Surf Coaster doesn’t have that problem.

A hyper and/or giga coaster, an inverted coaster, an inversion-heavy coaster, 2 or 3 woodies (an out-and-back, a twister, and a giant woody that mixes out-and-back and twister), 1 or 2 launched coasters, an intermediate coaster, and a junior coaster.

The launch coaster market is far too crowded for B&M imo. It's like if B&M came out with a wooden coaster type or a sitdown family coaster type. Intamin have been building multi-launches for years, Premier have made a killing with their compact clones, and Mack caters to the thrilling, but not quite intamin level launch coasters. B&M Doesn't have a place here, the same price, quality, and similar layouts to what mack provides, not going to be as intense as Intamin's attractions. The reason, the Wing, Dive, and Flyers did so well is the fact they were opening up an entire new market unseen before. We saw this with the B&M Family Invert, but just on a lesser scale, only 2 were built, just because how crowded the market is with Vekoma's monopoly on it. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I fear this model won't sell half as well as any other. But in the end, every model B&M Have ever produced is of the highest quality there is, and I trust they know what they're doing.

Cedar point is still building whatever is trending. They build Gatekeeper 2 years after the first B&M wing coaster debuted and they built Valravn when dive coasters were surging again. Steel Vengeance came again, when RMC coasters were trendy(ing). Parks are still going to B&M, they are just parks not in the US. Also, I can't really say that as the parks in the US could be going to them and are being waitlisted. if you look at life span of the company, it appears B&M averages more than Intamin. B&M has been around for 32 years and have 120 coasters under their belt which comes to aprox 4 coasters a year. Intamin has been around for 53 years and have 164 coasters under their belt which comes to aprox 3 coasters a year. Imagine if B&M wasn't as conservative and pricey as they were how many more we would have.

Maybe we coudl see other launched variants of their existing coasters like say a launched inverted or a launched floorless. I mean I seen some pretty insane launched inverted examples done in No Limits 2 and a launch could really Innovate othe inverted coaster model and bring back something that Volcano had that made it so unique and so popular. Dunno what you think, but i could see B&M trying that in the future if the Surf Coaster is a hit. If oyu look at the the trains they made for Steel Dragon 2000, that would be a precursor to what the Surf Coaster trains would end up being like. the 2-person 2-row trains we would see on that model.

Now RCM was observing in the early 2000 those 2 and jump to move forward. B&M has to get these new one right, otherwise is going to take the same fate as arrow.

Stand ups suck, floorless suck because any ride that puts your head up that far away from the track, any small variation in your track will make your head regret it.
B&M hasn’t innovated much, but CandyMonium makes you feel great about the future of comfort for coasters. Super smooth and comfortable

"The first 200, 300, and 400 foot tall coasters,"
I mean, Superman at Magic Mountain was technically the first 400 footer, but Top Thrill Dragster was the first complete circuit 400 footer

The "structure" of Superman may have been 400+ft tall, but the "cars"/"trains" go nowhere near the top of the structure. Superman is a bit of a fraud.

I'm actually a Log Flume / Boat Flume fan .... and I'd like to see that Coaster "launch" added to a Flume Ride (part of the Ride is a Coaster, part of the Ride is a Flume) .... and a nice loooong drop at the end with a big splash!

Lift hills eat real estate and many parks are running out of land. LIMs solve that lift hill eating real estate problem. The launch element is also a *stunt* which riders are looking to experience.

imo the next big boom for any coaster company will be the take on a 4D coaster, there's only 3 (free spins dont count) and RMC showed us that you need to be really good or really inovative to dominate the market at any point, i'm really hoping mack would be the one giving it a try since i feel like the time traveler rotation design could be easly adaptive to a 4D but i don't know im not a engineer let's hope someone comes out wiht a some new stuff soon, coasters are geting stale lately

I really hope Seaworld go ahead with this, but I’m more worried about their financial situation more than any other park currently.

I am a big B&M fan. There rides may not be the most innovative or unique right now, but they have a flawless track record, they create reliable, high capacity coasters that are ALWAYS General public favorites. While enthusiasts like them, they tend to go more for extreme or unique coasters. This is not to say all B&M are bland. They have elite and much above average coasters. Sea World Orlando has 3 B&M coasters for a reason. They go with quality products that are reliable and will please all crowds. But I'm glad to see B&M go into more launch coasters. They May be one of the last to that party, but once they get one or two of those out there, other manufacturers will realize what a quality product they produced. Finally, how could you not love the roar B&M coasters make when they're going around the tracks.

In the document it said something about water parks. What if it will be a launch coaster with a water splash and some cool elements.

It'd be very interesting if B&M started to make their own launched coasters... my home park is Gardaland, in Italy, and the two best rides of the park are Raptor (the first B&M wing coaster) and Oblivion The Black Hole (a dive)... if B&M is planning to build their new multi-launched, maybe Gardaland is included in the list of the buyers...
