That Tony dude very disrespectful wiping the opponent face.
@@caniceedwardhey it was Tony Galento, what did you expect
Used to watch Friday night fights with my Dad when I was a kid. I’m 88 now and I still miss him.
I still remember the Friday Night fights myself!
that means you had a great father sir
Me too, I can really relate as a child in grammar school going to the Olympic Tavern in Kearny with my father on Friday nights to watch the fights . Nobody complained about me being there. It was a Different world then . The war was offer an no one was up tight
I watch the fights with my son. I’ve given him a little training in the Sweet Science, and he’s with a solid amateur coach now. He has his own RUclips channel, where he does fighter breakdowns and fight analysis. My father is 86, and I hope to be watching the fights with my son when I’m his age. Cheers 🍻
For us ,it was the Tuesday night fights from the blue horizon
Joe Louis was a true gentlemen in and out of the ring
Louis was a just plain really nice guy, someone anyone would be proud to know
This colorization is absolutely amazing. Great job!
restoration is incredible.
My grandfather Robert Campbell owned a bar in Orange, New Jersey with Tony Galento.
@dennis. So in other words, Tony was both the bartender and the bouncer? 😊
what was the name of the bar and location.?
@@sierraefrain527 Don’t know. All my dad told me was that his dad owned a bar with Tony in Orange.
Did Galento spike the drinks? He was a dirty fighter with Louis.
My Dad was friends w/ Tony Galento back in the day. My dad gave me a personalized autographed b & w photo of Tony in the ring w/ Joe Louis. I HATE myself for not knowing what the hell I did with that.
A technical master against a bar room brawler. The famous Jack Dempsey, after watching Louis despatch Schmeling in their rematch bout in two minutes and four seconds, expressed the opinion that he was glad he never had to face Joe Louis in the ring.
Tony fought with the style of a classic dockworker: head to the floor; explode out of his stance. He had two punches: left hook and right hook. Not many straight jabs, just “glong” you’re out.
That's what I was thinking.
Tony called Joe Louis a bum Tony got his butt kicked what does that make him
An idiot.
Remarkable quality, especially the slow motion. Lovely insight into their lives too.
Brawler vs a class boxer.
Wow stock price of Petroleum jelly must have gone through the roof!
Greatest admiration for Joe Louis. Just no BS whatsoever. A very humble, honest, hard-working, fearless great man and great boxer. Admiration also for 2tontony. Just a natural lion-heart.
No doubt
Galento was trained for a short time by Jack Dempsey. However, Dempsey got fed up with 2 ton’s laziness.
He was quick with that left hook
The fact we can watch this is so amazing.
Ali would have beaten Tony into a pulp in ONE round, and Tyson Fury would have knocked Tony right out of the ring in 30 seconds flat.
Mike Tyson would have killed kim.
@@torvilasulvstle362Mike Tyson overrated.
@@humbledude3784 Maybe. But he was a monster in his prime, and would have wiped the floor with Tony in one round.
Just the AI messed up the colour😂😂
I'll tell you what, they are much better in legend than on film. It's hard to believe I am watching a man described as the greatest HW fighter ever. Maybe he looks better in other fights?
I'll moider da bum! 😂
I think people were much, much, much tougher back then.
Eddy Flanagan are you Irish 😅😅😅😊😊😊
I always felt that Galento had no right to be in the ring with the great Joe Louis. But damn if he didn't knock Joe down! You gotta give it to him.
😂yes he did. Then Joe beat his ass. He literally fell from one rope to the next. That’s what he got for rubbing Joe’s head at the beginning. Galento had no idea where he was at the end. I watch this fight 50 times.
Tony had never been knocked down before. He had said insulting things to Joe before the fight, and Joe wanted to punish him for many rounds, he said, but once he got knocked down, he decided to get the job done quickly. Marciano once called Galento "just about the toughest street fighter in New York". Tony was certainly a big, rough, tough guy, but if the ref hadn't stepped in to save him, Joe might have damaged him seriously for life. The two fighters appeared on "The Way It Was" many years later, and Galento said of Joe, "He was a great heavyweight . . . the BEST!" Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/6LVEV8EriJg/видео.html
Galento doesn't realize that this is supposed to be a boxing match, not a wrestling match. But anyway, Joe Louis tapped that ass, and in the 4th round, Galento looked comical staggering to the ropes. What a funny moment.!!
Tony trying to make excuses he got his ass kicked

The colours are really good on this one, odd how it works so much better with some than others. Great job!
This one did great. The reason is that the video had a much greater quality
Jackie Gleason told a story about being knocked out by Tony outside The Miami Club in Jersey one night. It seems a drunk Tony was heckling Gleason while he was on stage and Jackie excused himself to the audience to "take it outside with this clown", as Gleason describes it, "the next thing I knew I was waking up 20 minutes later"😢
Joe was absolutely right Tony's just a fat old Man all in a night's work
@Joey-xr3hn yeah he did although Tony did knock him down a couple times but Joe was a master boxer Tony didn't know anything about boxing skills Joe picked him apart toward the end of the fight joe nearly took his head off
Joe was maybe greatest heavyweight of all time. Tonys a mans man just getting in the ring with Joe let alone knocking joe down in his prime.
@@paulpolichio6514 galento ended his career with 111 fights and 80 victories with 57 KOs, he was quite strong, he certainly had no technique but he weighed more than 100 KG and had a deadly hook
What is most amazing to me here is how the referee seemingly allowed Galento to repeatedly hold Louis from the back of his head so that he would be illegally kept from retreating. Joe's ability to survive and fight nonetheless is just one of many testaments to his ability.
Yes they got away with it with some refs. Ali used to hold the head a lot.
@@peterhandy2551even so I never saw Ali use rabbit punches,he just holds with questionable techniques to tire you out,not gave you big brain damage like what Tony Galento did
The referee at times was unfair to Galento who's strategy was to get in close. The referee broke them immediately when they got close.
Galento was tough as nails ....
Some of the punches he took from joe Louis would knock most boxers out cold
Louis Underestimated Tony and didn't think he would have a chance, he didn't expect Tony's power and chin, after he got knocked down he was more careful and got the job done
100%
Some time a guy shorter than you might got your number 😮🥊👊🏿🤼☠️🤕✊🏿🤔_ & it was Louis wake up call 😮_ but Joe got up and put something on Galintos ass⛑️🥊👊🏿
Galento twas disrespectful. He was beat to his knees . Period. Could not even see straight
@@CreakyCricket 😜
Galento had chin and head. Imagine fighting Joe Louis and not even covering up your head? Shots to the body were useless. Shots to the head were useless.
Galento was the early version of "Butterbean". My dad always told me Joe Louis had a great left hand. POWERFUL LEFT HOOK you see in all Louis' fights.
Like the Manassa Mauler said " Fights are strange , funny things can happen " .
Somebody invented the jabs. Louis only showed how to use them.
there were many good jabers before and Louis has many great jab variants himself
According to legend joe gans invented the jab
@@LegendsofBoxinginColor Das stimmt!
@@rockymarcianobrasil317 i see, so you learned a bit of german there
Joe Gans was the only great jabber before the great Joe Louis, and of course his mentor/trainer Jack Blackburn fought Gans and told his protege Louis how good Gans left hand was helping to motivate him to have a good left hand as well.
Thanks for posting this fight! I've seen quite a few Louis fights and had heard of Galento but never saw any Galento fights. Galento had a very akward style, he was good enough to fight for the title obviously but he's very stationary. I'll have to checkout some more of Galento's fights.
There’s a good one of Galento versus Max Baer.
11:50 tried to hit with an elbow. 14:50 Joe telegraphed his punch and dropped his right.
Mob enforcer vs Heavyweight Champion of the World, it was only gonna end one way.
Great fight. Louis has good chin. He got hit right on the button. Left hook rocked his jaw . He was in good shape. Got up mad. Tony used his head a lot. Very hard chin. Lewis nailed hard about 12 times & jabs before ko. He stoped punching he was hurt. Took 10 more
the best. sergeant Joe Louis
In round 3 if you look at Tony’s right hand you can see his hand open, not making tight fist. He throws mostly lefts. Makes you wonder if he hurt his hand earlier in fight. I can’t get over how he keeps the top of his head so low, perfect angle to get hit. Boxing has really changed since then. Wonderful video!!!
Tony explained in his appearance on “The Way it Was” about this fight that he did not like throwing rights because they left you off balanced.
Did Tony have any boxing experience before this?
Tony didn’t have much of a right hand.
Joe Louis had class!
Tony Galento, during the post fight interview, you called Joe Louis a bum. Have you taken a good look at your face?
Tony is a great character haha
Galento didn't have a, 'face'- just TWO 'bums'-Brit speak for, 'butt'.
he drank beer and didn't train and knocked louis on his ass,and if the ref wasn't he would've beat him in to the ground.
he motto was I'll molder the bum --- called everyone a bum.... being an ice man took lots of strength and endurance ... back in the day...
Seeing this in color is awesome.😊😊
Galento was using the Marciano crouch. Unfortunately he wasn't supremely conditioned as Marciano was and didn't throw combinations to the body and head like Marciano. He was a dangerous slugger for sure who could be accurate with one punch at a time, which was enough to ko many a heavyweight.
Galento was 29 but looks 50
No art in these boxing videos. Galento was a dirty fighter, hitting while holding, and using the crown of his head to butt Lewis during the clinches. His boxing skill was non existent as he would run in head first, swinging wildly and hope to connect, if he missed, he would clinch and hold while still punching. There’s no sweet science in either fighter’s repertoire.
I couldn't imagine if Tony actually trained instead of having a diet of beer and hotdogs lol
tony didn't even train, makes joe look like a journeyman fighter, just shows how tuff tony was in real life.
@@west4057 He looked like a punching bag. Louis didn't have a mark on him and looked like he'd been for a walk in the park
@@Lyricistnzhe knocked down Louis though
@@Bumders92028 Who won?
@@Lyricistnz Louis won but you can't deny that Tony gave him a decent fight and made him hurt multiple times through the fight , Tony is very talented ,he didn't even train for the fight and still gave louis trouble , but yeah it's clear Joe is just the superior fighter
Quote from on the waterfront movie by Tony galento he was a canary but he couldn't fly
Remember parents bringing me and a classmate to a Joe Louis biopic as part of a movie double feature. Didn’t watch most of bout here but surprised by how easy it seemed for Galento to hit Louis.
Tony really did a great job..great left hook
.really humbled Louis
Joe was sloppy. Galento had a left hook and nothing else.
@@billwhite9703 so, it knocked him down !
And then Louis proceeded to humble Tony with a NASTY beating and some knockdowns in the process.
203lbs vs 233lbs
Joe Louis was a good fighter but not great Jack Johnson saw his potential & offered to train him he was rebuffed by Joe's camp
This is why I don't compare eras.
Tony was tough but he was out of his class with Joe
You didn't walk with Two Ton, you walked among him. Legend has it his shadow once killed a dog.
Gale to V Butterbean. Now that would be a fight.
Galento should win this one
Eric "Butterbean" Esche would smash "Tony "Gutflab" Galento.
Butterbean fought some pretty good fighters & took a world title. Albeit in what was considered the "2nd tier" of world boxing.
@@phillip9468 butterbean lost bad against people who have 1-6 records. The first guy that best him ended his career with 1-21 so never. Galento would win that one easy
@@LegendsofBoxinginColor . Have you read the accounts of Galentos mauling at the hands of Max Baer (in his later years) , Lou Nova & Schaf. He was labelled as one of the dirtiest fighters to ever put on gloves. Eye gouges, Raking with his glove laces, head butts, elbow hits & low blows, rabbit punches & hooking behind the neck while punching in the clinches. All the above pounded the crap out of him. His "knock down of Louis was as much on Louis being sloppy as he later told reporters. Gotta disagree with you "Butterbean" held the World Athletic Association belt & the International Boxing Federation belt & don't forget he went the distance with Larry Holmes.
@@phillip9468 went the distance with a 50 year old retired larry holmes
Great color footage.
Thanks for the memories.
Joe was great, but not the greatest.
Galento weighed about 245. That left hook knockdown by Louis lifted him off the canvas. Power!
I don’t think Tony was very skillful, but he had a jaw of granite.
Was holding the back of the opponent's head while smashing a glove into his face actually LEGAL back then, or was the ref effectively trying to aid Two-Ton Tony? Either way, what a schlub.
😂 😂 Chappie wasn’t going for any of Tony’s antics in the beginning. Smh Joe Louis on the other hand is steady, cool as fan.
Galento was wooden and lethargic but had guts
Back when people dress better and behaved better
This fight looks like a comedy, tony is not only overweight but looks old....never the less he must have had something to knock the super great joe louis down,,,
What fantastic footage.
Tony Gelento was such a bruiser and a very tough fighter to beat.
Imagine a modern heavy weight being only 5’ 9’’ against Fury or Lewis.
They shouldn't take him lightly
Lewis was great what power in both hands.
Who was the (Hell I dont know what to say in these P.C. times.) The "vertically challenged" person who came over and shook Joe's hand at 2:00?

ガレントの強さは歴史上の摩訶不思議😱
そういや以前、「稽古せずにビールを大量に飲んで強くなった」みたいな当時のコマーシャル見たな😅
Racism was alive and well in 1939. Galento fought dirty by holding around Louis's neck with his left hand while hitting Louis with his right hand.
Like Muhammed Ali did in many of his fights.
Didn't realize they allowed so much holding on the back of the head back in the day. It is completely outlawed now. There would have a whole lot of points deducted from Galento on a few rounds.
واقعا دیگه مثل اینا نمیاد❤
Surprised Lewis didn't just jab the crap out of him to set up the right hook. Rather then let two ton walk forward to load up then swing ?
Two ton came into the ring looking like a used canon ball 😂 but he was a hero loved by all
He called Joe Louis a bum 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You could've fought the way that you wanted to. You would not get disqualified for not doing what your manager said in the ring. Ali would've punished him worse.
The ref wouldn't let Galento fight on the inside. Every time they started working on the inside the referee would break it up. He was obviously instructed by the promoter to do this to help Louis. Louis was a good inside fighter so it wouldn't have made much difference. Louis is the best combination punching heavyweight in history. His accuracy and power with his combinations is above all others. Tyson has sperd and power but wasn't nearly as accurate as Louis. Ali didn't have the same kind of power or accuracy.
This is what Anthony Joshua SHOULD have done after getting dropped by Andy Ruiz in Madison Square Garden. That's the difference between a good Champion and a great Champion.
Joe Lewis is a great boxing-name even today for guys like me who have nothing so much in common with boxing. So when starting to see the fight its almost clear that Lewis will be the better fighter, the winner. On this background I apprechiate Garento very much, and to me its more interesting to see him fighting then Lewis.
Maybe in the days of the fight it wasn't so clear, that Lewis will be the winner (and the fight shows that its not so clear) and there was more tension about this question.
Was it disrespect that Galento dryed Lewis hair befor the fight? To me it seemed like a unreflected, childish move from Galento and very funny in this situation!
Joe was just dropped with a flash knockdown. He wasn't really hurt. He was clearly the more-skilled and heavy-handed man, but Tony had explosive power and was definitely a danger early on.
What was the deal with all the cops rushing into the ring at the end? Was that standard for the time or was it particular to the Louis-Galento match? And why do they call it a boxing _ring_ when it is square, not round?
I admire Tony;'s aggressiveness, which, alas, included his head
And holding Joe's head while he hits him
It is really hard to believe that Joe Louis is largely seen as the greatest HW ever. Maybe he was better when he was younger. He certainly didn't look like the greatest in this fight.
Top quality , sir
...very little jab as a range finder,
interesting how much boxing has changed
Galento Was better than I thought. He moved well and had some good punches. It wasn't enough to take out Lewis however.
For a guy who just looks like he is just trying to not slip on the ice
He iced alot of people
No fancy struttin to or from the ring either
It's nice to see these old fights. Galento had a good hook but, was dirty. So many headbutts and elbows
Galento had a club with which to fight. The Brown Bomber had nuclear weaponry.
"put up a good clean sportsmanship fight" refs instructions just wonderful
Ummmm, I thought that holding was illegal in boxing. Boxing is WWE -2. It's been a farce and still is a farce. Tubby Gotnothing is always holding the neck.
Get in the ring and find out. Things happen.
@@billwhite9703 With you? If you're serious you know the next step.
He did that repeatedly in the fight -- ref said nothing and louis adjusted eventually -- dirty tech that worked very well for Galento... he used it in many fights.... fighting his fight...dirty but effective
Galento repeatedly holds Louis behind the head and he's also purposely hitting Joe with a slashing right elbow.
Galento looks much older than the 29 he was in this fight
That is what a bald head, and being overweight, can do for your appearance!
No way wow
Even though Joe was famous for his left, I never get tired of watching Galento eat Joe’s right hand in this fight….
Question: in the post fight interview with Joe was the reporter with the brown fedora to the right if Lewis who was writing on his notepad a young Burt Sugar?
I’m a boxing fan from way back. Galento looks like a brawler, where J. L. Looks like the father of modern boxing. Louis would have had trouble with many modern heavyweights, but he was the best in his time and a pleasure to watch. Tyson would have endeared himself to the world if he’d emulated Joe Louis’s gentlemanly demeanor instead of allowing himself to be poisoned by Don King. Just one mans’ opinion.
Why do you think Louis would have trouble with modern fighters? Louis fought many fighters bigger than himself. Modern fighters would certainly be susceptible to Louis' short, powerful punches. Fast stick-and-move fighters, in style of Ali or Sugar Ray Robinson, gave Joe trouble but punchers, in his prime, did not.
Galento aveva un solo colpo devastante,il gancio sinistro e finché ha retto,lo ha usato benissimo...contro Louis era difficile davvero per tutti
The great joe louis dropped by a total bum embarrassing old fighters were overrated the best fighters were from the seventys
II wish Louis had fought Marciano when they were both in their prime. That would've been really something I believe.
If the film was shot in black & white, why bother to colorize it? In case one of the contenders gets a cut over the eye or a nosebleed?
Cool as a cucumber. Just another day at the office. Champ all day.
Notice, Joe didn't use any feints at all to set up Tony. Not sure if he did that on purpose to prove he didnt' need to or what.

Though assumed by some sportswriters to have been a reference to his "pulchritude" or physical appearance, Galento's nickname, "Two Ton", was apparently derived from his work as an iceman: a job he pursued in tandem with his pugilistic career. On one occasion, as a result of his ice-lugging commitments, Galento was reportedly upbraided by his cornerman for being late for a bout. "Take it easy", the New Jersey-born slugger reputedly replied to his colleague's complaint, "I had two tons of ice to deliver on my way here. I'll be right up."In addition to "Two Ton", Galento was also known as the "Jersey Nightstick", the "TNT Kid", the "One-Man Riot", the "Orange Orangutan", and the "beer barrel that walks like a man" The boxing historian Bert Sugar called him a "human butcher block".
The press would give Tony names and he'd say "I'll moider the bam".Then an English journo said "Tony what about Shakespeare?".Tony Replied "Sounds like.one.of them foreign fighters "I'll moider da bam"
Tony was no boxer, just a bruiser from the thirties, thank god Ali came around in the sixties to save us.
