I met Carmen in Orlando in 2003. He sat at my bar with his wife. He called me around the bar and told me who he was. He was probably in his early 80’s then. Little guy with huge hands. He said “Hey kid, will you let this old man give you a punch?” I said sure. I’ve never been hit to hard in my life! I got his autograph that day. What a treat!
that’s my gpa , glad to hear a cool story of him like that :’)

Robinson was 37 years old and still was moving like that.
yea hes probably my fave fighter of all time
Ummm. Look how much bigger he is
@@cd1168
Ummm They were both in the same weight class. Robinson was just taller.
@@cd1168 Huh? They fought in the same weight class
@cd1168 he's like Ali,tall for their weight at the time
Carmen was my gym teacher at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY
back in the early '70s.
Nicest man you'd ever
want to meet. A champ
in every way ! 🥊
Carmen was a friend of mine. We attended a. number of parties and events together in and around Rochester, NY which is wheere he settled.. And he did still like to play fight and spar to show he still had it! Great fighter and good guy full of stories and jokes!
The sportsmanship and respect between these two is really admirable.
Yeah. Really loved seeing it.
Other times, other fighters...
We don't have that now a days because people are disrespectful and full of pride and arrogance

Ray, the greatest ever. Carmen, great and tough.
Great channel.
The Great years of Professional Boxing at it’s Best Pound for Pound 👑👊🏾🙏🏿👊🏾👑
I love how boxing hasn’t really changed that much. It’s a lot easier to watch old boxing than almost any other sport.
I met Carmen went he was in his 70’s.
We used to deer hunt near Penn Yan, ny with my father.
I enjoyed listening to his stories.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 right
One of the greatest fights between 2 great fighters.
Robinson moves like a dream. It looks like he’s floating in there.
@@ascendediam Perfect timing, foot movement, reflexes and motion… If I have to explain that to u, u clearly don’t know boxing. Also keep in mind that this wasn’t prime Robinson even still he was robbed in this fight.
Ali emulated Robinson, no doubt
@@truthreignsforever9286 Big time, Ali worshipped Sugar Ray Robinson and studied his fights. The REAL Sugar Ray.
That's why they called him "Poetry in Motion."
Ray Robinson, and later, Muhammad Ali? Those guys were moving in stereo.
Great fight, between 2 of the greatest pound for pound fights of all time.
Easy to see why Ray Robinson was held in such high esteem by all other boxers. The balance and style, mesmerizing! He fought on well into his forties and didn't end up with much in the way of financial gain. If he had been around today I'm sure it could have been a lot different.
He ended up broke because he squandered most of his earnings.
Tall, fast and the LONGEST reach for his height in the world.
Brilliant boxing times amazing great great fighters now sadly passed away I loved the ring announcer, brilliant with enthusiasm 👌👌
Sugar Ray was a consummate ring technician. Such a master of the sweet science. This guy Carmen was no slouch either.
He was good but he ducked the Black Murders row
He was a technician who fought like a puncher. He was as much brawler as he was boxer. Ray fought with a short jab to setup looping bombs at midrange instead of long jabs typical of a tall fighter
Forget about who won . 15 rounds is the championship distance. A welterweight beat a middle weight with brutal display of courage and stamina. Fights today pale in comparison. Carmine eeked it out in my opinion. The size difference is obvious. Hey Charlo and company watch and give boxing fans this action. Spence fight Crawford show me some balls . What made Ray was his competition. Fulmer, Giardello, ect. Tough!!!!!
These guys were as tough as they come.
Fighting more than once a month 😉
The training a day must be wild
Two years before I was born.
This is the closest we'll come to a time machine.
U are born in 1959?
Yes. Like I said.@@Ironmike312
So awesome--love watching these old fights. Was invited to go over to Basilio's house to see his trophy room years ago. Hall of Fame is in Canastota--where Basilio grew up. Great fight.
WOW .THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL GIFT. I WISH MY DAD COULD HAD SEEN THIS COLORIZED . WHAT A FIGHT. SHOWS LOADS OF HUMANITY AND RESPECT BETWEEN HTE TWO MEN. EVEN THOUGH RAY WAS NOT IN HIS PRIME HE CERTAINLY SHOWS WHAT HE WAS MADE OF. BASILIO , IN MY HUMBLE OPINION AN OVERVIEW CHAMPION NOT MUCH REMEMBERED TODAY BY THOSE HYPED COMMENTATORS . THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS UP
THANKS
Anyone with a win over Robinson is GREAT.
Sugar Ray was a pugilist specialist. Basilio real tough fighter
Wow...!
What a FANTASTIC fight...!!
Thanks for making this, Legends of Boxing in Color...!!!
Great sportsmanship and a fine display of skill from both fighters.
Thanks for putting this together. Good job.
Basilio was 7 pounds lighter and they always consider Robinson to be the best pound for pound I think Marciano is th best pound for pound. Met Basilio in Vegas . One of the nicest people I ever met
No one but you makes Marciano p4p best😊
Beautiful quality upload in color thank you
The greatest fighter in history simple
Carman said that 5 years before this fight he was walking with his wife in New York when a pink cadillac pulled up. Out stepped Sugar Ray and his entourage so Carmen thought he'd say hello. He walked up to Ray and said "Hi I'm Carman Bassilio, I just fought Billy Graham on television 📺 last week" Apparently Sugar gave him the brush off and Carman thought him to be arrogant and wanted to get Ray in the ring. 5 years later he beat Robinson. 2 different boxers and characters who served 2 slugfest wars for the M/W title. Also before this fight the 2 had never fought or sparred with each other. This was a true golden age of boxing
You could say Carmen MADE Ray respect him
I was born in 1968 and never heard of Carmen Basilio until Gati vs. Ward 1 when people started talking about this fight above. There was no RUclips so I only saw pictures. Amazing how this classic is preserved. Thanks to uploader.
Video quality is fantastic. Well colourised as well. Keep em coming. Great job👍👍
Thanks a lot!
The best work you've done - congrats
Thanks
@@LegendsofBoxinginColor i Love it been waiting for this Fight in Color!!!
@@purplebondsaiyan2987 nice to hear. more to come
One of my dream fights would be Sugar Ray vs, Haggler in their primes.
Sugar ray took that L like a true gentleman
Even though anyone with eyes could see he actually won. Back then for a black guy to get a win over white guy he had to nearly kill his opponent and even still the crowd would actually lift the guy up off the ground and push him back into the ring. And if he was on his feet by the bell the white guy would still win.
There was no love lost between these two, but it never boiled over into a public spat.
Beautiful footage. topnotch boxing. Thank you for posting.
My pleasure
Good job 💪👍
Louis, Robinson and Leonard. Artists.
thats right, they are like painters. They paint on a canvas XD
Faut enlever leonard cest pas la meme classe quand meme
@@Ali-nw8iz Disons que c'est un artiste qui a son propre style
Robinson doesn't seem any better than Leonard to me
Louis & SRR a League above
It's insane how exposed Sugar Ray Robinson is on the left side of his face, especially in the later rounds but it didn't hinder his greatness because he is who he is.
Carmen took SR in this one! Two great fighters!
Robinson is BOXING .
I still regard Sugar Ray as the greatest ever fighter. His problem/failure was that he spent his money faster than he earned it. He died broke. England, February, 2024.
Past Ray's prime, but still a very effective fighter. And Carmine was tough as nails! Both of them are two of the greatest to ever lace em up! And Ray maybe THE greatest.
The Greatest Vs the most Underrated
Great fight. I can't agree with the decision. I don't know how they scored rounds back then but Robinson landed countless jabs and I thought would get a unanimous decision. And many of those jabs were power punches in my view, not setup punches. Which isn't to say Basilio didn't fight a great fight. He did. A golden era. Respect.
I don't know when they finally used the 10 point must, but yeah, Robinson seems winning here.
One of the gamest Welter weight challengers And soon to be middleweight champ.
Basilio was a tough little bastard! He never would have beaten Robinson in his prime.
Sugar Ray Robinson, the best pound for pound fighter in boxing history. He held multiple weight titles.
We're not seeing the whole fight here, but from what we're seeing, I'm thinking Robinson was ripped off by the decision. It WAS a close fight, though.
Of course he was ripped off. Back then black fighters had to basically KO a white fighter to win. That’s literally why Robinson became such a devastating fighter he realized early on when the opponent was white he couldn’t simply out box em he had to DESTROY them.
The full fight version from 2 to 15.
ruclips.net/video/8Z92v3Tz-gE/видео.html
Yeah I was thinking the same thing
Every time Robinson lost someone says he was "ripped off". All he did was jab and hold. What's so special about that?
Carmine took the play away. Notice the class of Robinson in defeat. These guys are the standard of boxing . WOW that was a great fight! David vs Goliath.
Hell off a fight basil game and rentless Robinson to have such handspeed at 37 marvellous.
They are shizzled to the core ! Like statues
All the commenters passing judgement I believe Sugar Ray is 38 yrs old here. How did Ali,Holmes,Tyson,Holyfield,Ray Leonard,Joe Louis,Roy Jones look at 38 yrs old?
Super fight ! I hated a fighter that just kept coming, like Carmen, no breather, to decide how to slow or stop him 😁 Tough men, both !
Inevitable comparisons to Jake LaMotta after watching this. Carmen was a bit smaller than Jake but also with a great chin and maybe a harder punch with both hands Carmen also with more speed and ring savvy and able to slip a lot more punches. A Basilio LaMotta fight somewhere around 1950 would have been something!
Robinson really disliked losing and did it very rarely
A shame they didn’t fight a third time…..by the way, in the fight with Ray where his eye was totally closed a reporter asked him if that affected the outcome…he said no, that his other eye was fine……he was not being funny….THAT was Basilio.
Looked to me like Sugar Ray had it. With no doubt.
I saw Basilio fight many times on tv with my Dad. Basilio was a very tough fighter.
Basilio Very Great!
Ray's age of 37 can be arguably considered young by today's standards. But you have to remember these guys were fighting more than 10 times per year.
I remember in his p4p documentary, Ray fought 3 times within 21 days. After suffering his first defeat against Lamotta, he fought Jackie Wilson and then rematching Jake again. From Feb 5, 1943 to Feb 26, 1943. That's insane.
These fighters don't mind hand or other form of injuries.
Basilio was tough, in fact one of the toughest. Robinson was one of the most skilled boxer.
Lemoyne College has an outdoor mass at the start of the school year. I went and sat behind an old man who I thought I should know. I think he had a walker. Then I realized it was Carmen Basilio. I would guess that was 15 years ago. He has since died.
Notice end of rd 8. Bell rings. Ray keeps his hands up till he is sure Basilio is going to his corner.
Good eye. Smart thing to do
15 years old Muhammad Ali mustve been somewhere watching this fight with full of awe
Round 12 Sugar gets revenge for round 11
1. Sugar ray was definitly the middle weight Ali.
2. I thought this fight was more of a draw .
Those were men!
Basilio,LO AMO!!!
The synced audio isn't synced! You hear the punches 2 seconds before they land, the bell goes 2 seconds before the referee breaks them.
This is so cool
Basilio looks like De Niro as Jake La Motta.
Carmen basillo un sacre combat avec sugar ray robinson
Sugar was as much brawler as he was boxer. Instead of fighting with a long jab like most tall boxers he’d short jab at midrange to setup bombs
My brother went hunting with Carmen ... said he was a super nice guy.
Can't even imagine the damage Lamotta would have given anybody back then with 5inches more reach.
Never seen another fighter crouch down below his opponent's waist like that when he wanted to avoid purches. I wonder why, it seems to have been effective
Marciano did it routinely
Looks like that had Basilio all "Juiced Up"
The full fight version from 2 to 15.
ruclips.net/video/8Z92v3Tz-gE/видео.html
De La Hoya worked the jab and had footwork somewhat like Sugar Ray!
In my book, the greatest boxer-puncher of all time vs
one of the most viscous little fireplugs of all time.
And by viscous, I don't necessarily mean dirty.
Just that Basilio's punches were not designed to score points,
but to bust you up and make you bleed.
When you realize sugar Ray Robinson is 37 and way past prime
Man had the energy to jab for 15 rounds at the age of 37
Wow, Bailiso weighted in as a 154 lbers.
Robinson was 37 and had a lot of fights . Pound for pound the greatest .😇
Tried to find the whole fight?
Sugar droppong the elbows to block those body shot..
Tough men!
Poetry❤
AT 35 SSR WAS STILL SWEET AS SUGAR
I noticed that they never feint because if Robinson did that he would have easily outclassed his opponents but he shoots the jab straight no feints or waisted movements
Looks like Marciano learned to emulate Carmen? And Ali learned to emulate Robinson?
Ah, but Rocky came before Carmen
But Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest of all
@@yaderblen2890 But, no he is not
No Marciano is at the end here other way around doosh.
Yes he is!@@romanboxing3959

What u think of crawford or spence?
@@LegendsofBoxinginColor Took awhile we will see, both haven't faced any competition like they will in this bout? They are nowhere near as rugged as these guys.
ray robinson was great deal
Does anybody know Robinson's height, he looks tall
The real the best in the history is sugar Robinson , Mohamed Ali was heavy weight
Carmen basilio teached Robinson a lesson as being small he was smarter than Robinson.
It was fairly reffed and scored. Robinson missed an awful lot of punches. Basilio was a bulldog. Good fight.
I was at this fight. Robinson won 10 rounds.
You must be in your 90s
Basilio was GREAT fighter, but Robinson got robbed here.
