Walker Smith Jr. bka Sugar Ray Robinson the greatest ever. This guy was poetry in motion and the total package. The best welterweight and practically unbeatable at 147. He was also a great but beatable middleweight.
Robinson never lost a welterweight bout. Only ever beaten against middleweights. Lamotta beat him in the 2nd of 6 bouts. Not a welterweight bout. At weigh in Ray weighed in at 144, Lamotta, a whopping 16 pounds heavier at 160 pounds. Ray fought and took on heavier boxers earlier in his pro career. Before winning middleweight title he fought in welter class against welters and also beat boxers weighing in above welter class. / Ray was undefeated as an amateur boxer 2 time NYC golden gloves champion and world welterweight champ as a pro for years and years. Never lost at welter and below in total app. 100 pro bouts and over 100 amateur bouts. He says it here he won 170 something bouts total pro and amateur before losing. After Jake beat him, Ray beat him in about 2 weeks later. He kept fighting against welters and middleweights. Didnt lose again until over 130 pro bouts in a decision against Randy turpin, a middleweight. .Then koed Randy months later. / Roberto Duran is my favorite. Joe Louis, Mathew Saad Muhammad, Ezzard Charles, other favorites. Sugar Ray Robinson P4P still the best. Duran at lightweight, Louis at heayweight, Charles at light heavy up there close, but Ray is the best, IMO. When I thought I knew how good he is I started analyzing Ray Robinson's boxing in slow motion over and over, it's not reflexes he is making constant astounding placement and holding back throws in mid motion decisions that are like chess extremely mature mind, and his feet and upper body looks so coordinated as if two brains power are working. He sometimes let the opponent throw a punch and rolls it to get into position then opponent is at a big disadvantage and he attempts to knock him out on every punch that are so precise. he is out wittting his opponents and is good at everything and things that only he can do. That's just a small aspect of his boxing. When watched in slow motion other boxers look so short sighted only thinking one move and a half ahead like auto-pilot zombies , whereas he fully makes sense and is working 2-3 moves ahead.

Whats scary about Ray Robinson is the lack of footage when he was in his prime, Most of the footage of him is was when is was a MiddleWeight. He was basically Unbeatable at WelterWeight. Anyone who thinks that Ali is more accomplished just doesnt know boxing. Ray could knock you out moving forwards or backwards with both hands, he could KO you with every punch from a Bolo to Jab. He had an amazing chin (never knocked out) and quite simply the BEST footwork in Boxing history. THE G.O.A.T. Period
oddyseus They are both the G.O.A.T. People always seem to forget, Ali was not allowed to box during the best years of his prime and with arthritic hands and later with parkinsons syndrome he still fought on for three to four years. Ali could also knock you out moving in any direction, so could Robinson. I don't believe you could distinguish between them, they were both natural, confident, courageous, charismatic and larger than life. two great boxers.
Remember...in case you didnt know...Ali was considered the HEAVYWEIGHT Ray Robinson...whom he aspired to be like anyway cause... "Sugar Ray Robinson" was his "idol" and...one of the best examples of we had of him putting someone's lights out was when he dropped Cleveland Williams (while moving backwards) the best it is said he ever was...before being stripped of his title...dont forget that!😌
That left hook in the fulmer rematch is the most perfect punch ever seen in boxing. Did you see how ray feinted to go to fulmers body, just the slightest of feints- fulmer drops his right to protect his body and ray lands the punch to the head and ENDS the fight! What a fantastic move that was. Also- when Muhammad Ali says he’s watched Robinson’s fights and says Robinson was the greatest p4p ever to step into a ring, that’s good enough for me. Ray was the best. You only have to watch him and wonder at him. When everyone thought he was finished, he went on for YEARS after, winning world titles time and time again. Yes he lost fights. But look at the rematches and look at the achievements he made. Unbelievable and a lovely guy too. 💥🥊
Cleaned out the welterweight division most of the middleweight division probably would’ve dominated Light heavyweight and probably would’ve been a top heavyweight contender if he really wanted to. No question about it he’s the best ever.
That's all I ever heard as a young kid an still do POUND FOR POUND Robinson's the greatest ever,I only seen one match, his last match,he seem like a great champ an a great AMERICAN an person, the footage an film is amazing, thx for sharing I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
All I heard my parents rave about was Sugar Ray Robinson, and Joe Lewis...I had to do my own research on that big monster Jack Johnson, who is hardly mentioned...He was huge and scary!! 😱
Ali said it best, many records have been beaten over the years but no one has surpassed Sugar Ray Robinson's overall achievements. Even today, I don't think his records and achievements have been surpassed. SRR was a role model, not just in the ring, but his contributions to social programs like cancer research, and youth outreach programs, were exceptional and inspired other people to do the same. His intellectual abilities to manage his own contracts, his marketing ventures overseas, and his entrepreneurial undertakings in America were so far ahead of the times. People love him because he was such a great ambassador of the sport, a standard, a boxing genius, and a wonderfully humble human being. Very few can achieve becoming this total package no matter how rich they become. Excellent documentary!
Alan Maxwell now that would be Craaaaaazy!! Wow that’s really to hard to pick. But I must say SUGAR I mean this guy was fighting every two weeks. 15 Rounds of slugfest then turn right around and do it ten days later!!! I love Roy but I will go with The Sugar Man.
Longevity is a huge part of Sugar Ray's greatness. Well into his 40's, he was still beating younger champions. That's fighting 4 times as many fights as Ali. Not just age, but deterioration from too many fights. I'll tell you what speaks volumes. Ali, himself, one of the most arrogant and boastful individuals in sports history, readily proclaims that Ray Robinson was the greatest ever.
@LionelWitchieWardrob Yes, by a miracle she survived. Have you read 'The Tragedy of Randolph Turpin' by Jack Birtley? From reading it it becomes clear the Turpin had the talent to become a fantastic boxer but lacked the tools to deal with the success that followed. It is a genuine tragedy.
he never met aussie boxer dave sands as sands died in a truck crash in his prime .he was regarded as one of the best ever .and would have met ssr eventually ,many boxing experts said at the time sands was that good he would have beaten ssr and gone on to become one of the best even on a par with ssr . we will never know .
Sands and Robinson teed off against some common opponents, Bobo Olson, Robert Villemain and Henry Brimm. Sands outpointed both Olson and Villemain but Robinson scored KO wins over Olson (3 in 4 fights) and Villemain. However Brimm got a draw against Sugar Ray when Ray was in his prime, and Sands KO'ed Brimm. So it probably would have been a highly competitive fight between Robinson and Sands. Unfortunately just because you were a top rated contender in those days it didn't guarantee you a title shot, Sands deserved it, and I would say he should have been world champion when Robinson retired for a period had he not died. Olson outpointed Turpin to win the vacant title when Sands was clearly better than Olson. Whether Sands could have beaten Robinson is debatable.
Ray as a primed welterweight is to me his natural weight thus to me he is a tad better at this weight than at middleweight, tougher competition at middleweight though!
Well, he was no longer in his prime years when he became a world champion in middleweight division but he's also unbeatable in middleweight during his prime years.
It always hurts to see champions gettin battered wen there older ppl judge floyed but hes smart for fighting more so for entertainment now than for glory respect to to robinson tho hes my favorite boxer
Robinson had 33 matches before his first loss, then lost again just a few fights later. He finished with 19 losses, 6 draws, and 2 non decisions. He lost to bums. Get real.
he could come out ali is the one that passed out! 10 seconds after the fight was stopped frazier would have beat him in fact ali quit it was dundee that made him go out there do your research and know what you speak sir
oren615 That's the test of a great fighter. Ali lasted as long as he needed to. It wasn't Dundee that was fighting. Talk is cheap, but Ali and Frazier fought one of the greatest fights of all that night. Remember Ali said he was close to death in the tenth round. Research doesn't make fights, fighters do. Two great men.
This not only shows how great Sugar Ray Robinson was but also the professionalism and sportsmanship by those boxers of that Era. Something that you hardly see now.

Most excellent fighter in the world then , before and now , what a champion
Ray-Robinson-Was-Flawless-TrulyTruly-Truly-FLAWLESS.
The amateurs back then were tougher than most pro's today, unless you're a Mexican 😉😉 its true but, init !!

Who ever gave this a thumb down must be blind bitter and just the most negative person everr....!!!!
Sugar Ray Robinson was from my hometown of Ailey GA
Cleaned out the welterweight division most of the middleweight division probably would’ve dominated Light heavyweight and probably would’ve been a top heavyweight contender if he really wanted to. No question about it he’s the best ever.
So 2 weeks after losing to LaMotta he was fighting again!! Todays fighters aren't even out of bed yet 2 weeks after a tough fight.
That's all I ever heard as a young kid an still do POUND FOR POUND Robinson's the greatest ever,I only seen one match, his last match,he seem like a great champ an a great AMERICAN an person, the footage an film is amazing, thx for sharing
I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
Fighting novices? Which nobody he fought made pro fighting like who made mid cause The styles were to outdated....
Imagine a peak Sugar Ray vs a peak Roy Jones jr...
@@msc10304 I would lean towards Ray, myself...👍
The Sugarman was at his peak at about 150lbs.
Jones at about 168lbs
Jones vs Ezzard Charles would be better
@@larry4789 Agreed!
177 wins before his first loss? he was 40-0 when he lost to Lamotta...
Are you dumb?
Randolph Turpin's story is both fascinating and tragic; he fought Sugar Ray using one of the few styles that would give him trouble.
Joe Lewis Jr is my cousin
when did u know u had him?
when he signed the fight contract
Sans aucuns doutes,l'un des meilleurs boxeurs de tout les temps...🥊💥
Now here is a great American whereis Hollywood
Longevity is a huge part of Sugar Ray's greatness. Well into his 40's, he was still beating younger champions. That's fighting 4 times as many fights as Ali. Not just age, but deterioration from too many fights.
I'll tell you what speaks volumes. Ali, himself, one of the most arrogant and boastful individuals in sports history, readily proclaims that Ray Robinson was the greatest ever.
what a powerful left hook, i stocked
The word Great exemplifies Sugar Ray Robinson ✊🏾
here in the UK Sugar Ray Robinson held in very high esteem
Robinson would have mopped the floor with Leonard.
and Terry Norris e Camacho???
177 win with out losing doesn't sound right but with out a doubt the greatest
Yeah not true
Tyson’s old managers produced this…..cool.
Simply the best that ever did it
@LionelWitchieWardrob Yes, by a miracle she survived.
THE GOAT!
You never had me down Ray.
One and only Sugar Ray Robinson Pound For Pound GOAT No one for as long as the planet is earth !!
God how violent. It must be so painful. I don't understand why people (males) can watch a guy get pummeled. Organized violence.
"I won...170 something fights before my first loss"😶😶😶😶
Ali said that pound for pound Sugar Ray Robinson was “ The Greatest “ fighter who ever lived.
Suger Ray Robinson was a great, great fighter, one of a kind. But the best pound for pound fighter that ever lived was " wil o the wisp " Willie Pep.
THIS guy was Something to behold' tough as leather and Magnificient to WATCH' SRR .
Sugar ray robinson would beat Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis said he was the best they ever seen so u know I'm going with them and plus he is the G.O.A.T
I think only Bud Crawford is the Only Boxer who can compare to Ray Robinson
Yeaaa over 1 hour on Sugar, the GOAT,
Robinson had it all But prime for prime Jack Johnson.
Ray as a primed welterweight is to me his natural weight thus to me he is a tad better at this weight than at middleweight, tougher competition at middleweight though!
Well, he was no longer in his prime years when he became a world champion in middleweight division but he's also unbeatable in middleweight during his prime years.
Sugar Ray Robinson = #1...........
It always hurts to see champions gettin battered wen there older ppl judge floyed but hes smart for fighting more so for entertainment now than for glory respect to to robinson tho hes my favorite boxer
What a legend,what a man
Great sportsmanship as well as taking blows in round 3 well after the bell rang
true boxers and true gentleman's in them days, not like today
The weigh in was inforced, now they cheat thier mother father and brother to out weigh the opponent as much as 15 pounds its sad bums in charge
Who hits a man while he's already down on one knee?? Rocky Marciano that's who!!
Any one who beat Sugar Ray Robinson he came back and beat, beatable? Huh
This was such an excellent documentary! So well put together! Thanks for uploading it!
Robinson had 33 matches before his first loss, then lost again just a few fights later. He finished with 19 losses, 6 draws, and 2 non decisions. He lost to bums. Get real.
Wrong
he could come out ali is the one that passed out!
DAME THE MAN WAS BADDDDDD !!!! 173 /19/6 WHAT A RECORD !!!!
Gracias ❤️

I doubt if we will ever see a boxer again in the class of Ray.
I swear if only there was a time machine I'd like to go inside of it and be at ring side to see these great fighters go to war
Notice the 1st 2 names at end credits were if I not mistaken, iron mike's mentors
