Overall this is the best boxing documentary ever put together, IMO. I first saw it in 1988. Beautifully tells the story of Joe Louis. It pulls no punches. Amazing, even shows Joe as a pro wrestler, broke, hooked on drugs, his friendship with Sinatra, and my God the supreme talent and skill he demonstrated in the boxing ring. It can be argued back and forth forever, yet to me nobody and I mean nobody can beat the Joe Loiuis who destroyed Schmeling in one round. Unbeatable that night. Accurate, fast, heavy handed punching, boxing like it is to be written in the textbook of punching. Best knockout artist P4P, any weight, all time, IMO - is JOE LOUIS.
There was something perfect in the way joe Louis put his punches together
Saw him on TV the last day of his life. He was ringside at Larry Holmes / Trevor Berbick fight at Ceasers Palace. He got a long standing ovation. It was hard to tell if he could truly comprehend it. I'd like to think that he could to some degree. I saw his grave at Arlington. It just says LOUIS, THE BROWN BOMBER, WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION 1937-1949. Nothing more needs to be said.
I love that Max Schmeling paid for his funeral. Max was never a nazi, he was just unfortunate to be a German during that time. Max loved Joe and always had a soft spot in his heart for him.
This Hero represented America in the midst of it darkest years and will always be the Champion For All Time! Joe Louis!
Joe Louis was a great boxer and an even greater human being!
This was a wonderful documentary on the Brown Bomber!!!
Joe Louis was 1 OF an kind.
Still the best documentary on Louis in my opinion.
This docu dont pull no punches, I always felt so sorry for joe for the social environment of his era, what a champion he was guy was on top of that he was made of iron and hit like a truck.
Schmeling was a good guy too, truly the golden era of boxing.
That's how I first learned about Joe Louis the brown bomber from my grandfather when I was a kid....he talked about him a lot when I was a kid.... He didn't run off at the mouth he did all his talking in the ring...RIP champ...
A Beautiful Man.
My god does this present world need more of them.
R.I.P.
1love
Joe Louis was a brave man...especially in his day...
Heard my grandfather and grandmother talked in reverence over the Brown Bomber Joe Louis!!!!!! One of the greats
Louis is the best ever in my opinion in the heavyweight ranks
Agree. I think American writers and experts of his time (and even now) are being UNFAIR in labeling his competition as weak, especially the so called bum of the month club. These guys are ranked fighters before/during/after they met Joe Louis, so how the hell they're bums? Manny Pacquiao fought the likes of Chris Algieri, Jeff Horn and Lucas Matthysse but wasn't criticized of facing bums.
@@ralphdupas6179 oh the name is a misnomer. he made world champs look like bums on his come up. he made top 5 ranked contenders look like bums.
@@cheetoyeeto1232 it ain't. honestly, Algieri, Horn, Vargas are not bums. give me a break. i am not hating on Manny. this is just the truth. PACQUIAO would fight bums and still get away with it. While Louis will fight top quality oppositions and got critism.
@@cheetoyeeto1232 and look at his record at 147. the only top 5 147 he fought is Cotto, Mayweather and Thurman. The rest are not even a boxing bodies ranked fighter let alone The Ring/TBRB ranked fighters or got dubious rankings.
joe louis was the man
THIS IS THE BEST DOCUMENTARY ON JOE LOUIS ...
I first saw this on TV on A and E one late night in 1988. I was surprised at how well they did this. I think part of it is that Joe was such a kind man people really did love him and when producers did the daunting task of getting info about him and his life (including family, friends, those involved in his boxing career and very personal things about him) people that knew him were very eager and willing to help them. There is a mountain of facts and stories about his boxing life and his personal life in this film made soon after he died. It is really remarkable. Hats off to these producers and those involved in putting this film together.
I heard his name but now I know the person truly one of the best in the sport of boxing what a legacy.
Joe Louis, my favorite boxer of all time!
I mean yea he had a good left & right hook but Joe Louis was highly overrated , almost every fight he getting knocked dwn
@@mr.rightnow240mostly only flash knockdowns and def not every fight
@@mr.rightnow240 he went 8 years without getting knocked down 🤣
I Love Joe Louis forever! Such a wonderful beautiful person.
Outstanding. It brought tears to my eyes.
Same Here.
He was a great man and a great champion. RIP Joe 🙏
Then when Joe Louis wanted too retire as a Boxer after World War II; the Government came knocking claiming, that He owed the Government Back Taxes.
Joe had thought during the War an his Fighting year's, his Accountants were paying his Bills including Taxes.
That's why Joe had to come out of retirement and fight again.
I think Joe Louis was so Handsome in his prime in the 1940's..
a credit to the human race. RIP champ
A credit to his race the human race
Hes a credit to his race, the black race. Foh with that 💩, you people did not accept him back then, why accept him now?
😂😂😂😂 Too many drinks at this bar
Top of the heap. RIP Mr. Lewis
This guy was the truly the best of all time. I don't understand why ppl say Ali is the best... is it because he said so? Nah! Ali wasn't it. Joe was the best
Great documentary on Louis. I really enjoyed it.
It showed us his great boxing ability, I just hate how the government used and abused him!! It was like he was between a rock and a hard place..People tricked and cheated him out of hella money!! Forced him to do shyt that didn't benefit him period..THE ENTIRE GOVERNMENT DID JOE LOUIS REAL DIRTY!!
the greatest athlete
Thanks for uploading this please don't ever take it down
The greatest fighter ever.
Amazing life, great achievements and most defiantly one of the greatest boxers ever. RIP Joe Louis.
Rest in peace Joe Lewis one of the greatest boxers in history
Louis. Louis. As in Saint. Think 'Saint of Boxing' and you won't forget it.
BWAHAHAHAHA! It's LOUIS.
Let me guess - Republican?
@@flyingdutchman913 You're tolerant; obviously a fan of CNN.
This is my hero Joe Louis Forever
Rip champ. Louis was awesome
Imagine the pressure he felt, he wasn't just fighting for himself he was fighting for freedom for black people. He had a whole race depending on him it takes a special person to do that the way he did.
He was fighting for the country🇺🇸
He fought mainly for us blacks. I forgot who he lost his first fight to, but he was so hurt. He said to his trainers that he felt he let all his black people down when he lost
GOAT
WOW..What an EXCELLENT Documentary. Can't believe missed this doc all this years. Big, Big Joe Louis Fan and this is simply Phenomenal. Well made, lots of unseen before videos and pictures for myself. Thank you so much for sharing. Subbed.
Joe was the man.
Joe Louis was the most powerful and fastest punching heavyweight boxer in ring history. His great hand speed, especially in combination, was awesome to behold. He had a powerful jab, threw every punch perfectly and with wasteless accuracy. His right cross, thrown short and straight, was sheer dynamite. The "Brown Bomber" never ducked anyone as his record 25 title defenses attests to. Of those 25 successful defenses, 21 were won by knockout, 17 of those were ten counts! 5 in the first round! He also knocked out six men who held the Heavyweight Championship of the World. From 1934 to 1949, when he first retired as champion, his record was 60-1 with 51 knockouts. He held the Heavyweight Championship for a record of nearly 12 years. Joe Louis was and still is the GREATEST heavyweight in history! Screw your opinions I have a college degree; My boxing history goes before John L Sullivan stupid!
+William Zhou No comparison. Ali would of beaten any boxer. I rank Jack Johnson second, after Ali as the greatest heavyweight. Then Rocky and Joe Louis I ranked number 5 greatest heavyweight.
+William Zhou
Throughout Heavyweight history, there may have been a few harder punchers and better boxers than Louis, but he combined them perfectly. That is something that cannot be said about any other Heavyweight Champ in history. He could adjust and adapt to any type of style he was confronted with. It was suicide to move towards him, and no way any fighter could beat him by running from him. He was dangerous inside and outside, he could win by slugging and trading, and had the ring savvy to out think and Box his opponent. Louis was the consummate Boxer-Puncher.
I'll admit Joe was the great champion that people say he was. He wasted no punches, was methodical, meticulous. He's in my top three: Ali, Louis, Johnson.
Great man...period!!!!!
I Happen to have Enormous Respect for Joe Louis, he was As far as I'm concerned, The Greatest Heavyweight Champion (All Due Respect to Muhammad Ali) But Joe did So much for America, he was in the Military During WW 2, Part of his Primary years, NOT to mention Joe,God Bless His Soul,,,Donated many of his Boxing Purse Earnings to The War Effort. Witch males me Extremely Mad At Our Country for what Our Country Made Joe Pay Taxes that he was said to have Owed.
After Sgt Joe Barrow Louis done for The U.S. Our America ???
During A War, ,,,WW 2 !!!!
Thank you Joe Louis Sir,
For Your Generousity

THE GREATEST SHAME OF ALL TIMES, THE DEFAMED *I.R.S., ( LONG LIVE FOR THE HONORABLE, *JOE LOUIS, THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO).
Truely the greatest of all time
This is one classy man !!
I really enjoyed this documentary on Joe Louis I knew a little bit about him like the fights he had against max shmellin and Billy Conn during world war 2 but this biography really taught me what kind of person he really was in heart to everyone it wasn't about race with him although people judged him for it he...He was extraordinarily humble to... I also believe that he was definitely a credit and symbol for African Americans at that time.... Rest peacefully champ!!!
What an amazing documentary, so enjoyed this, and learned a few things too.
one of the greatest americans ever.
Yes indeed.
When are they going to make a movie about joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson
Joe louis will always be the best heavyweight champion
Joe Louis was truly one for the ages!!! in his prime, he was the best heavyweight champion ever!!!!
No he was not.... A real uncle Tom

Excellent post. One of the five times great of all times
R I P MY HERO !
"Whom would you rather fight Joe, Braddock or Schmeling?" - "Braddock would be much easier and the Championship too". Here Joe shows great respect to Max.
JOE LOUIS. The greatest knockout artist in boxing history. Many, many other great boxers on that list. All are behind this fellow, in my opinion. Joe Louis was trained by Jack Blackburn. Terrific trainer. He and Louis worked together long and hard in the gym perfecting the art of Joe's punching. Nobody ever put his punches together in a more devastating fashion than Joe Louis.
A sharpshooter with dynamite in his blows; throwing them at his opponents in rapid fire combination - seemingly at will. Flawless. Want to learn how to correctly throw a jab, hook, straight right hand, overhand right, uppercuts, body shots, etc.? Watch Joe Louis. A hard hitting heavyweight with perfect delivery of his blows. Louis is the definition of a textbook puncher; a truly superb knockout artist. Indeed, the best ever.
1:26:36
I swear he buried half his arm in Schmelling's side, and Schmelling was no walk in the park
Actually that's considered to be Moore. Tyson for heavyweights.
@@tacticalix Louis was voted by Ring Magazine as the greatest knockout artist, ever. Moore has the most knockout victories of any boxer in boxing history, but Louis put his punches together even better. Once he hurt you, you would not hear the final bell.
Tyson is a great puncher, but I think Foreman is the better ko puncher. Marciano also a great ko artist. Young Mike Tyson was, also. No doubt about it. Liston, too. Lennox right hand. Shavers, never a world champ, is probably the hardest puncher, ever. Holmes, Ali, Norton, Lyle, Caldwell,, etc, ...they sll ssy it. Shavers and Max Baer and maybe a few others ranked hardest punchers, ever. Tyson could be on list, also. He was so fast he hit you hard and you never even saw it coming. That is the surest way to get a knockout.
@@nycinstyle We all have our own opinions. I expressed mine. Ring magazine expressed theirs; and now you yours. Have a good day.
It's a damn shame that one of the Best Heavyweights of all Times, died pennyless, and I believe he owed THE IRS... Nowadays, Heavyweights that could not carry Joe's Jockstrap, make 8 digit purses!
In 1960, the IRS said:
we have gotten all we can financially out of Mr Lewis and they decided to cancel his debt.
@@frankpaya690 the IRS had robbed Joe by then, when Joe went to he service he donated all his purses to military relief charities and the government dogged him like that, they should've set up a non-profit charity in his honor.

If Joe Louis was in his prime against Rocky I think he would've gave Rocky his only lost.
Awesome documentary 👍
How illustrative!
Great video, Guy(s). Much appreciate your upload.
thank you for this video
My Great Uncle, Kingfish Levinsky and my grandmother, Leapin Lena are in your film. She was just nominated for The International Women's Boxing Hall of Fame. She passed away when I was just 4 yrs. old and this was the first time I've heard her speak and saw my father when he was young behind her. By any chance would you have any other footage of them?
He was a German citizen who had no choice under Hitler. He had a jewish trainer and was not a Nazi. He was sent as a regular soldier.
Max was a pawn for his government. At least given that Louis showed him love in his own dark times says a lot. Flesh and blood isn’t the real evil out there. We all can be pawns for righteousness or pawns for darkness. There were many an officer and members in that party who were devastated and destroyed when they discovered really what the Nazis were.
Ever THE Champ.

Beautyful ent Said respect ✊🏽 for Joe Louis

class act
that intro music!
A Boxing Note:
1. Braddock took everything Joe had and pushed Joe to the floor.
2. The next round Joe's "radial" punches caught up with Braddock.
3. At 28: 23...You can see clearly Braddock slowed down tremendously
- less than (1/2) his speed - that he showed in the previous round.
In fact he slightly stumbled coming out for the next round.
His feet were becoming to feel heavy.
4. This is the subsequent effect of a "radial punch".
Point:
Braddock was "put away". TKO by Lewis!
All the best,
There was no push..
A clean knockdown by Braddock

Hands down the greatest champion in the history of boxing.
Holmes had 2 week notice in the fight with Tyson, in an interview Holmes explained that he only trained for those 2 weeks.
Tillis gave Tyson a good fight, what you call ''running'' most boxers like Ali called dancing.
Tillis gave a young prime Tyson one hell of a fight. I had it 6 rounds to 4 for Tyson, like most judges.
You can't name me anything specific that has changed in boxing styles since ''peek a boo'' because nothing has changed.
