The number that Robinson did to Van Damme in his fight with him: Flurries of body shots put Van Damme down a first time right before the bell. His trainers had to carry Van Damme to his corner and he was absolutely wincing in pain. Which middleweights ever had the power to put people down repeatedly with 'body shots?' Then the finishing combination by Sugar Ray: A very rapid succession of two consecutive left hand body shots -- simultaneously followed by a Sugar Ray left hook, with lots of leverage, speed, and power to Van Damme's "dome" which KOed him. When have you ever seen combinations like that in any division? Awesome stuff.
Condition your body to take power shots and to why Middle weight fights you see body blow knockouts, because the body has less muscle to absorb that power.

If you watch it again, you can see ray drop the left, just a little bit, causing fulmer to lower his right expecting a body shot, fulmer fell for the feint and ray landed that PERFECT left hook to fulmers head and ENDED the fight with that 1 shot. I mean that was the fantastic gene fulmer on the canvas out. Incredible.
Gene was said to have been out until he was helped to his corner where he turned around and looked back over at Robinson who was leaping and jumping up and down jubilantly and said to his corner "Why is Ray doing calisthenics in his corner?" :)

1:36:30 - 1:37:01 This is nonsense. Practically everything Bert Sugar says here is incorrect. Robinson only knocked Turpin down in the 10th round and this was shortly before the end of the fight. He did so out of desperation as Turpin had already cut Robinson by this stage and the referee, Ruby Goldstein, told Robinson that he was only going to give him one more round. And if you look closely at the final round, Robinson missed with a large number of the punches he threw at Turpin before the fight was stopped.
Gotta remember that he was old and he knew so much about boxing that he was bound to get some things wrong. He’s quite possibly the greatest historian in boxing history.

Description of the van Dam fight in Brussels: ""Robinson left the ring with virtually all 15, 000 spectators on their feet booing his victory. The Dutch middlewight (sic) champion who outweighed Robinson by a single pound, was holding his own until late in the 3rd round when the American uncorked what appeared to be a low blow. Van Dam, who scaled 157½, went down but was saved by the bell. Until the questionable blow in the 3rd the Dutchman was a distinct surprise. In the 1st he scored frequently with lefts to Robinson's nose. He continued his success in the 2nd and Robinson was warned by referee Gustave De Baecker of Belgium for his ring tactics. It was not until the 3rd that Van unlimbered his right. He was doing well with it until Robinson dropped him with a blow to the stomach." (Associated Press)"

The real winner was Joey and his resilient body! Rays power was def Light Heavy worthy at the time! I'm a massive Tyson fan. In his prime, no boxer in the history of boxing was more ferocious, more feared, more devastating or had more first round KO's than Tyson. 51-6 with 44 KO's. Tyson is the pinnacle of boxing. However, if you're talking pound for pound the best fighter to ever live, it's without a doubt Rocky Marciano. 49-0 with 43 KO's. Yeah, Mayweather had one more win than Marciano but Mayweather only had 27 KO's and ran backward most of his career to avoid damage. Marciano went right through your punches and knocked you out no matter who you were. If Tyson and Marciano had a chance to fight each other in their primes, Tyson would have surely knocked out Marciano fast. With 6 loses though, Tyson can't wear the Greatest Of All Time crown. Tyson, Robinson and Mayweather are GOATS for sure but they aren't thee GOAT. Marciano wears that crown. Always will.

I think Mike Tyson had better movement and accuracy and even slipped punches better in his first career while the people that cared we’re still alive.
Of course his record n longevity was nothing compared but to me Mike just seems better and was a heavyweight at that n still had the speed and movement over him in my eyes.. sorry guys..
Carmen isn't the best person to give an impartial view on Robinson ,he didn't like him....
The management and corner crew threw in the towel, they knew he was defenceless and in no condition to continue. That is when you need them to think of fighters welfare.
Dempsey + Joe Louis + Ali = Sugar Ray Robinson
He was genius and intelligent enough
If Robinson became Alis manager Don King you have never robbed countless boxers
The Greatest Pound for Pound Boxer in My opinion Sugar Ray Robinson The 2nd best pound for pound greatest boxer whos undefeated with 50-0 Floyd MayWeather Jr. Floyd Money MayWeather Jr.
Don't tell that to a PACQUIAO fan and they will keep insisting that Robinson didn't become an 8 divisions world champion, 5 division lineal champion, oldest welterweight champion and fighter of the decade.
You're skimming around a whole laundry list of ATGs to just put Mayweather number 2. What about henry armstrong? Willie pep? Muhammad Ali? Archie Moore? Jack Johnson? Sugar ray leonard? Marvin Hagler? Tommy Hearns? Roberto Duran? Alexis arguello? The list can go on and on... mayweather is not even top 20, let alone in the top ten of the accomplishments of other fighters. Nobody thinks Marciano is the greatest because of his 0 in his record.
@@raygan1221 Paqicou or whatever was overrated anyway....over glorified Philippino brawler.
Dude I guess like Mayweather you don't understand the term pound for pound.. Mayweather is a great legend but he's not known in the business for he's punches.. he's known for his Defence footwork.. I don't think he's unbeaten streak of 50-0 wud have lasted long if he was an heavyweight.. like Ali he wud have found it hard as age catchs him..
Announcer made Lamotta sound much greater than he was

This is nonsense.
@@theamazingcj5708 Sorry, I disagree.
He's a professional and he should get his facts straight before talking about a particular fight.
@@ppuh6tfrz646 Bert sugar knew more about boxing than you could ever hope to. Sorry that you’re just too egotistical to see that 🤷♂️
@@theamazingcj5708 You're completely missing the point.
I'm not saying I know more about boxing than him. Sorry that you're just too incapable of reading of something properly to see that.
As I said before, the guy's a professional and he should make sure he gets his facts straight instead going on television as a boxing historian and getting almost everything wrong about one of Robinson's most famous fights.
@@ppuh6tfrz646 in case you didn’t notice, they were having a sit down discussion. Nobody can know everything about a subject. You’re braindead 😂💀
Basilio was great
Only one Sugar Ray,not Leonard.
the reason Sugar Ray lost to Turbin was due to his time spent with the women who he had a considerable amount of time sparing in bed with them , not enough time spent training and keeping fight fit
Possibly the biggest upset of all time when he lost to randy turpin in London
Well that’s a shame if it wasn’t a fare fight. As good as you are the possibility always exists that their is someone out there better than you at what you do.
@@nyvcr502 Don't believe everything you read, sounds like some BS if i ever heard it. Its dutch land home advantage, if he hit him low it would be made a big deal! The truth is guy got embarrassed and the writer wrote some excuses. Everyone knows Ray was the best ever and has no need for low blows and dirty tricks!
i remember pacquiao when he fought david diaz they have the same posture and style on that fight
What the hell are you talking about? Put the ethnic pride aside dude. Don't even compare them, Sugar Ray Robinson was the GOAT period.

I don't know what the heck Jake Lammota was talking about saying it was close lol No dude you got massacred! and i believe he lost the 1 he was awaarded against Ray..! Guy is a warrior but a good boxer he was not.. and he never tried to improve his skills, it was always just as his namesake JUST BULL IN THERE AND SWING! lol Def 1 greatest chins ever displayed in a fight!
Ans as for the Joey Maxim fight, it's obvious if the fight was 12 rounds like todays rules, Ray would've been a 6 time World Champ and even more since he probably wouldn't have retired and defend his title easier than the Maxim fight since he would have defended with a more light heavy defined body by this time! To me the winner of that fight was the sun lol All kidding aside Joey won fair and square! with a steady survivors style making sure he didn't succumb to utter darkness through all them angles Ray blasted him with! The real winner was Joey and his resilient body! Rays power was def Light Heavy worthy at the time! Joey went through the same heat as Ray except he didn't fight more than he survived..This is why 12 rounds is a perfect amount of rounds today because of them Homer Simpson type survivors (Not that Joey was one). Quite honestly Refs were so much greater back then! Today they love to involve themselves way too much! And not enough when dirty ish happens!
Wrong...that fight was close and lamotta deserved that victory and arguably another one vs Robinson
ok jake was a beast , but not a great boxer at all
Rocky Marciano or sugar Ray...in my opinion both are better then Ali
Ali would box circles around Marciano
NO, just NO. Rocky fought in a poor era for that division, old men who couldnt stay the pace
