They all Stick and Move ( Jab and dance ) even though they could never perfect Ali's movements they still learnt a lot from him . Play Ali Liston first fight and watch Lewis fight they all learnt one thing from him STICK AND MOVE. Only after Ali did people adopt this Technique. Before that people fought toe to toe in a straight line. When I watch all these boxers , I see a lot of Alice movements in them. I was talking with my 86 year old neighbour the other day when he casually dropped into the conversation that he sat ring side at this very fight. When cooper knocked Ali down they all thought he’d had him.
Henry, a true gentleman with an awesome left. Ali, a pure genius in the ring. Henry missed out, but the friendship that followed between them was really what mattered. Enjoy forever together guys.

My mom (a Cockney Brit) and my dad (an Ohio Yank) nearly divorced over this fight. It remained a flashpoint for the life of their 51 years of marriage until they both passed away. Gotta love sport.
You're right. He was quicker than Ali, way too quick, that left hook especially. Ali was short with most of his left leads because he was frightened of the hook. Very sensible of him. When he was nailed he was very, very groggy.
Yeah and he also said Ernie Shavers is the hardest hitter he ever faced and he also said Joe Frazier hit like a truck and made him feel like he was dying and he also said Ken Norton gave him the toughest 24 rounds of his entire career. Ali was that kind of guy. He always spoke highly of other fighters including the night Foreman fought 5 men in one night. They were all average at best but Ali complimented each one of them as really good fighters.

Henry Cooper gave a GREAT performance! Highly respected by the people and later by Clay who realized that Cooper was indeed a tremendous fighter. Clay on the deck! A fantastic night in boxing history!

It's amazing to me the improvement Clay made and also his physical development between this fight and the Liston fight. The guy who fought Cooper would not have beaten Liston. But he matured a lot in the 5 months between the two fights. Incredible.
Not exactly. The transatlantic satellite picture (relatively new in 1963) distorted the physiques of both fighters. In the first four rounds, Clay chose to fight Cooper straight up and in close, not moving much at all to his left or right. Bad strategy. After the knockdown, Clay got serious, peppered Henry with the jab, keeping him at a distance and eventually ending the fight. This fight reminded me of the two Leonard-Duran fights. In their fist fight, Leonard chose to slug it out with Duran and lost. In the rematch, Leonard moved a lot better, using his speed and jab for more often and more effectively, frustrating Duran to the point where he said 'no mas.' Against Liston, Clay kept himself at a distance (Sonny had an 84" reach), moving superbly to his left and to his right, using the jab to great effect, against a fighter who could take him out with one or two punches. Clay split Liston's face open and that forced Sonny to quit. Clay didn't take Cooper seriously, however, he had a great deal of respect (understandably) for Liston.

Clay basically kicked his ass and Sonny was humiliated and embarrassed--so he quit. Similar to 'No mas', in a way. The second fight was a different story. He definitely went 'in the tank'. What most people never appreciate was that Cooper wasn't really a heavyweight by today's standard. He only fought at around 13 stone or around 182 lbs, so he packed quite a wallop for his weight.
I think he came in at 189 for this fight. He was a plasterer by trade and had an inordinate amount of natural strength in his left arm and shoulder. Ali said that no one hit him harder.

Cooper's left hook was like dynamite. A very tough fight for Ali. Cooper was very dangerous. Ali was messing around and did not take this fight as serious as he should have. Ali for me is the Greatest of all time and a great performance by Cooper

I was a child when this happened. I remember it happening but had forgotten that Cooper knocked him down -- and a major league slug it was! Clay was lucky to walk away with the "W." Classic!!

Clay was boxing and toying with Cooper in the first 4 rounds. You can go back and look in the 3rd round he was teasing Cooper, and the announcer said he was ungentlemanly. He was gettin in his head. Cooper's lucky Clay hit em in the face so much and got his eye gushin. The ref stopped the fight to save Cooper gettin knocked out. You can say what you want, but there wasn't nothin easy about this fight. They both boxed well, and had a great fight, but Clay came on strong in the 5th. That knock down got em motivated in a major way, and you could see play time was over. I just went back and watched the 5th round again and counted the punches. Clay threw about 37 punches to Cooper's 6 punches. And Clay landed almost every one and Cooper didn't land any. It was about a minute and a half in the 5th round before the ref stopped the fight, and clay landed about 35 punches and Cooper didn't land one punch. I'm tellin you, the ref could see what was comin, and he stopped the fight to save Cooper from gettin knocked out!!!

People underestimated Ali when he fought Liston for the first time in 64. This was an impressive victory and he proved himself to be a legitimate match for Liston, but some were so fixated on Liston's power as a puncher that they failed to consider Ali's speed, footwork, and endurance. Not to mention reach, and the ability to take a punch.
Ali's movement & balance were off that fight. Was more arm punching than setting down on his shots using his hips where the torque & power base generate. Cooper's striking was the opposite..angry intentions w every punch. Ali's legs & hands weren't in synch to punch w any serious power behind them. He definitely got much better. He was still so green back then

Cooper, Wepner (who was the "Rocky Balboa") both got beat down before the fights were over. Joe Frazier was the only one who knock Ali down in the same match and won the bout!

That was probably the hardest clean punch ever landed on Ali, but he took a worse beating in the Shavers fight, followed by Norton fight where his jaw was broken and Frazier 1 where he lost his first fight. I’m leaving out the well past his prime fights.
Had Cooper got a chance to challenge the champ Sonny Liston before Ali did the following year, he would have had a great chance to beat Liston, who was in decline at this time (1964). Internationally Cooper was/is very much underrated. Unfortunately he got cut so easily and therefore lost some important fights, he otherwise could have won, at least on points.
Coopers management team always said they would let Henry fight Ali every week, but they wouldn’t let him in the same town as Liston let alone the same ring Cooper himself wanted no part of Liston
For twenty years Ali was an artist. He floated, danced and out boxed every opponent. No one has ever shown the finesse, the style that was Ali. No one ever will.
He also ate so much leather that it ruined him for his last 20 years of life. The man was great but others have been on his level and will be in the future.

Many of Cooper's stronger punches narrowly missed his targets due to Ali's ability to steer away (floating like a butterfly). Having said this, Henry Cooper is still a very good fighter. Salute to him.
I love this fight as one of the best matches of all time. It was a chess match between two very skilled boxers of very different styles. The highlights for me was Alis incredible jab just relentlessly scoring and wearing down Cooper. And of course Coopers clean as a bolt of lighting punch which really floored Ali and left him wobbly and dazed like no-one else ever achieved when he was in his prime.
I was at their second fight in 1966 in Highbury Stadium. Henry did well until the fight was stopped in the 6th round in favour of Cassius Clay ( Mohammed Ali). Cooper again sustained a very bad cut over his left eye which required about 16 stitches to close. My mate Conor O Dwyer ( RIP) and I watched from the stand on our binoculars . The ring was situated in the middle of the pitch. Great days. Jimmy

Of course, by the end of his career Ali was well known as an artist in the clinch, but Cooper picked up on it as it was happening.
Impossible not to love this boy. He is all heart, tip to toe. How would anyone dare to expose himself to deadly punches of cooper, Liston and others that he faced. He must have been only sixteen or not much older in this match. His style is just beginning to take shape. Will anyone like him be born again in the Millenium? He is there in every one's life story. Ali was the turning point in boxing. With and after him boxing changed for ever. He invented and introduced the new style of dancing, moving and hitting rather than static monotone boxing. When I watch fights like this and people say Ali would beat Tyson. I just don't see it. As heavyweights go,I'll forever have Iron Mike #1. No doubt though Ali is legendary and truly transcended boxing.

Cooper came in like it was a big street brawl, and gave Ali the fight of his young boxing career. Cooper came the closest of all Ali opponents ever, to knocking the champ out cold.
@@seniordavidmanderson9232 Ali was a really good boxer. I read an article years back, that Ali starting taking pain killers before a fight especially the big ones. If so, that didn't help his cause. He may not have realized how hurt he was, and those injuries took a big toll.
Robert Romeo, Cooper was a more skilful boxer, Ali had effectively no defence, his hands were often down to his hips giving him no protection, he ran and danced to avoid getting hit, when he stopped dancing he was easy to hit, Cooper knew it and slammed him with a left.

I think that was one of the best punches Ali ever got hit by. It landed right on the chin and was Cooper's famed hook. It woke Ali up, hurt him badly and if it had come earlier in the round, don't know if Ali makes it to the next round.
Gotta give Henry Cooper all the credit in the world, he was really willing to take it to Ali, and damn near pulled it off. And although Cooper was only 29, he did have 8 years of exerience on the , still very young, Ali, and it showed. And it also greatly helped Ali become the legend he was to become. In a weird way it is similar to Lomochenko versus Salido, in that the older master taught the young aspiring master a trick or two. (Without the constant hammerring of the bollocks, thank goodness.)
I was a close friend of Henry's twin brother George. George had the autographed boxing gloves displayed on his wall of the first 1963 Cassius Clay vs Henry Cooper. boxing match. Both were great guys.
He could hook off the jab too which was amazing, and his ability to duck under Ali's jab. I have never seen a boxer do that before they usually slip the jab it is faster. Great Fighter and a gentle man.
I’m perhaps too young remember much of 60s England, but my mother always pined for those days. It’s a pity that racist attitudes were so disgusting and blatant then, but that aside I really like ‘that old’ London atmosphere. English people seemed like they had so much more gutsy character then and proud of it, marvellous.

I'm pretty young, the only thing I know about Muhammad Ali is the movie, and that he is the greatest. I've never seen Muhammad Ali taken down in the modern era, 1970 or newer. This is the first time in my life I've ever seen Ali taken down! Wow, to Mr. Cooper!!
Henry actually exposed Ali's weakness to the left hook. Frazier exploited that weakness a lot during their fights together. Henry's right hand at 6:02 was beautiful.

I was in the service at this time and this is the first time I’ve seen this fight and that knock down. Cooper was impressive and I’m sure I would have cheered for Clay because we were both the same age and from Louisville.
Wow! Timing is everything. I never watched this fight before and history could've been a little different if that bomb came in earlier in the round. Amazing fight.

Cooper was a consummate professional and he had a great left hook, but a fighter like Ali only comes along once in a generation. You have to admire it and respect it. But, kudos to Cooper-for one glorious moment he had the greatest heavyweight of all time on the seat of his pants! Who else can say that, other than Joe Frazier?

I listened to this on the wireless when I was 14 - I heard the commentary that 'Enry had knocked Ali (Clay) down with his 'left 'ook' and then the whislting and groaning took over and I had to retune and thump the set - I was expecting to hear that 'our 'Enry had won - but when I got the sound back it was in the 5th and 'Enery was having his eye trouble.
Great fight. You can see the beginning of the legend Ali would become. A heavyweight that moves like a lightweight. Cooper was a really tough customer.

First time I watched this fight, I have heard so much about it over the years. I remember my mother saying the fight is on tonight, but it is after your bed time. Her, my father and grandfather both watched it and my father told me that Cooper had knocked Clay down and the fight was stopped due to Coper’s eye injury. My grandfather a boxer himself thought that Clay was not as good as the boxer’s of his era.

More likely that he was still adjusting from the amateur to the professional ranks, and had yet to develop the killer instinct of a pro. Compare with his fights against Williams in '66 or Foley in '67, and you'll see a different kind of fighter who has learned the animal instinct to go in for the kill.

Once he stopped holding Ali's arm,he became far less effective.

@David McFrost but if you watch Lewis, Joshua and most of those boxers you mentioned have learnt a lot from Ali. They all Stick and Move ( Jab and dance ) even though they could never perfect Ali's movements they still learnt a lot from him . Play Ali Liston first fight and watch Lewis fight they all learnt one thing from him STICK AND MOVE. Only after Ali did people adopt this Technique. Before that people fought toe to toe in a straight line. When I watch all these boxers , I see a lot of Alice movements in them. Ali like you said was not a heavy puncher , he was a scientific intelligent boxer . Thanks for your evaluation. 👍

I was talking with my 86 year old neighbour the other day when he casually dropped into the conversation that he sat ring side at this very fight. When cooper knocked Ali down they all thought he’d had him.

You're right. He was quicker than Ali, way too quick, that left hook especially. Ali was short with most of his left leads because he was frightened of the hook. Very sensible of him. When he was nailed he was very, very groggy.

Yeah and he also said Ernie Shavers is the hardest hitter he ever faced and he also said Joe Frazier hit like a truck and made him feel like he was dying and he also said Ken Norton gave him the toughest 24 rounds of his entire career. Ali was that kind of guy. He always spoke highly of other fighters including the night Foreman fought 5 men in one night. They were all average at best but Ali complimented each one of them as really good fighters.

It's amazing to me the improvement Clay made and also his physical development between this fight and the Liston fight. The guy who fought Cooper would not have beaten Liston. But he matured a lot in the 5 months between the two fights. Incredible.

Not exactly. The transatlantic satellite picture (relatively new in 1963) distorted the physiques of both fighters.
In the first four rounds, Clay chose to fight Cooper straight up and in close, not moving much at all to his left or right. Bad strategy. After the knockdown, Clay got serious, peppered Henry with the jab, keeping him at a distance and eventually ending the fight. This fight reminded me of the two Leonard-Duran fights. In their fist fight, Leonard chose to slug it out with Duran and lost. In the rematch, Leonard moved a lot better, using his speed and jab for more often and more effectively, frustrating Duran to the point where he said 'no mas.'
Against Liston, Clay kept himself at a distance (Sonny had an 84" reach), moving superbly to his left and to his right, using the jab to great effect, against a fighter who could take him out with one or two punches. Clay split Liston's face open and that forced Sonny to quit. Clay didn't take Cooper seriously, however, he had a great deal of respect (understandably) for Liston.
Let's be honest Liston took a dive in both fights.and Clay/Ali. Was not the greatest heavyweight. But he was the greatest entertainer outside the ring

Clay basically kicked his ass and Sonny was humiliated and embarrassed--so he quit. Similar to 'No mas', in a way. The second fight was a different story. He definitely went 'in the tank'. I don't think we'll ever know the whole story...

What most people never appreciate was that Cooper wasn't really a heavyweight by today's standard. He only fought at around 13 stone or around 182 lbs, so he packed quite a wallop for his weight.
I think he came in at 189 for this fight. He was a plasterer by trade and had an inordinate amount of natural strength in his left arm and shoulder. Ali said that no one hit him harder.

I would concur with a lot you have said, but to reiterate my main point about the smartness about Ali's superior boxing skill is ultimate in his showdown with 'rope-dope' powerhouse George Foreman, who extinguished 'smoking' Joe's career for good. Cooper's lucky Clay hit em in the face so much and got his eye gushin. The ref stopped the fight to save Cooper gettin knocked out. You can say what you want, but there wasn't nothin easy about this fight. They both boxed well, and had a great fight, but Clay came on strong in the 5th. That knock down got em motivated in a major way, and you could see play time was over.
I just went back and watched the 5th round again and counted the punches. Clay threw about 37 punches to Cooper's 6 punches. And Clay landed almost every one and Cooper didn't land any. It was about a minute and a half in the 5th round before the ref stopped the fight, and clay landed about 35 punches and Cooper didn't land one punch. I'm tellin you, the ref could see what was comin, and he stopped the fight to save Cooper from gettin knocked out!!!

People underestimated Ali when he fought Liston for the first time in 64. This was an impressive victory and he proved himself to be a legitimate match for Liston, but some were so fixated on Liston's power as a puncher that they failed to consider Ali's speed, footwork, and endurance. Ali's movement & balance were off that fight. Was more arm punching than setting down on his shots using his hips where the torque & power base generate. Cooper's striking was the opposite..angry intentions w every punch. Ali's legs & hands weren't in synch to punch w any serious power behind them. He definitely got much better. He was still so green back then

I love this fight as one of the best matches of all time. It was a chess match between two very skilled boxers of very different styles. The highlights for me was Alis incredible jab just relentlessly scoring and wearing down Cooper. I was at their second fight in 1966 in Highbury Stadium. Henry did well until the fight was stopped in the 6th round in favour of Cassius Clay ( Mohammed Ali). Cooper again sustained a very bad cut over his left eye which required about 16 stitches to close. My mate Conor O Dwyer ( RIP) and I watched from the stand on our binoculars . The ring was situated in the middle of the pitch. Great days. Jimmy

I think that was one of the best punches Ali ever got hit by. It landed right on the chin and was Cooper's famed hook. It woke Ali up, hurt him badly and if it had come earlier in the round, don't know if Ali makes it to the next round.

And although Cooper was only 29, he did have 8 years of exerience on the , still very young, Ali, and it showed.

I was in the service at this time and this is the first time I’ve seen this fight and that knock down. Cooper was impressive and I’m sure I would have cheered for Clay because we were both the same age and from Louisville.

Cooper was a consummate professional and he had a great left hook, but a fighter like Ali only comes along once in a generation. You have to admire it and respect it. I listened to this on the wireless when I was 14 - I heard the commentary that 'Enry had knocked Ali (Clay) down with his 'left 'ook' and then the whislting and groaning took over and I had to retune and thump the set - I was expecting to hear that 'our 'Enry had won - but when I got the sound back it was in the 5th and 'Enery was having his eye trouble.

Love this era of Ali/Clay. I’ve always thought this fight was a testament to his chin. How could someone so beautiful be so tough?
First time I watched this fight, I have heard so much about it over the years. I remember my mother saying the fight is on tonight, but it is after your bed time. Her, my father and grandfather both watched it and my father told me that Cooper had knocked Clay down and the fight was stopped due to Coper’s eye injury. My grandfather a boxer himself thought that Clay was not as good as the boxer’s of his era.
"Clay was not as good as the boxer's [sic] of his era". "Rocky Marciano only fought over-the-hill fighters and pumped-up light heavyweights and retired when he saw Liston on the horizon". "Joe Louis had the famous 'bum-of-month club'". I call BS on those remarks. All those men did was beat everyone there was to beat. Every fan thinks their era was the best. Some think it's been all downhill since James Jeffries.

More likely that he was still adjusting from the amateur to the professional ranks, and had yet to develop the killer instinct of a pro. Compare with his fights against Williams in '66 or Foley in '67, and you'll see a different kind of fighter who has learned the animal instinct to go in for the kill.
