Clearly, during Ali’s boxing career, his mobile skills were not good enough to allow him to escape the brutal punishment he absorbed in his FIVE LOSSES as well as other fights to prevent him from his horrible existence at the end of his life! Muhammad Ali was a great and noble personality - no doubt! And Ali was indeed "the Greatest" Boxer of all time! His style ("Fly like a Butterfly and sting like a Bee") was so unique and his speed so amazing - especially for a heavy-weight Boxer, that no one can compare or mess with him. In this (first) fight against Sony Liston, Liston tried to cheat by ordering his Corner "to burn the gloves", meaning that they smeared the gloves in an ointment that would sting and temporarily blind Ali after a punch to the eyes. Nevertheless Ali was able to somehow avoid punches until the chemicals were out of his eyes. After that Round 5 Ali was able to see Liston again clearly and won the fight deservedly. I cant imagine another Fighter to survive such an unfair Round (against a hard Puncher like Sony Liston) and win finally! So in my opinion Ali was actually the greatest Boxer of all time! RIP Muhammad Ali! You will never be forgotten!!! You will be "the Greatest" forever!
The chemical was put on Liston shoulder. Ali often had to grab his opponent and put his head on the shoulder. That’s how the chemical came to Ali’s eyes
He was not that noble towards his wives. Best boxer ever no doubt. Fighter for civil rights, no doubt. But he was not a good husband and the way he treated Frazier was despicable. Nobody is perfect.

Absolutely, and he was voted as one of the top 12 hardest punchers of all time, and I believe he deliberately pulled his punches, not only to go quicker, but to avoid seriously and permanently injuring opponents, which he went out of his way, not to do.
One of the greatest fights in the history of boxing. Sonny Liston was a freak of nature who would've dominated any era of boxing... if only he didn't live in the same era as Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Ali had the greatest speed and fastest reflexes in the history of heavyweight boxing.
Between a Boxer and a Brawler, I’d generally take the Brawler to win. Unless he’s a Great Boxer like Ali! Then I prefer the Boxer. Liston kept throwing haymakers trying to knock out Ali but Ali’s great footwork kept him evading the blows. And he ended up frustrating Liston. And Ali kept throwing his jab and keeping Liston off him. Ali wore Liston down. It was the beginning of Ali’s reign as Champion.
Sonny liston was an absolute ruthless animal. These were the age of real massive heavyweights. Its incredible how ali was able to built his empire over these terrifying men.
After the layoff Ali's foot speed pretty much gone. Hand speed still there but now he relies also on his ability to take punishment. Against Foreman, Frazier, Shavers, Norton he got hit plenty and it ruined his health. That beating by Holmes was awful and he just wouldn't quit. No quit in Ali.
@Aaron Digby By the Holmes fight Ali was worse than "past his prime". He was badly injured and shouldn't have gotten a boxing license. I saw the fight on closed circuit TV. Ali was laying on the ropes taking a beating. The referee said " If you don't fight Ali, I'm gonna stop it". He didn't stop it. He should have. Afterwards, Holmes said "I did what I had to do but I didn't enjoy it". He didn't want to hurt Ali.
The greatest sports photo ever was taken that night. You see the side of the ring with all of the photographers? That was the photo pit and all of the veteran photographers are in that area. A newcomer was forced to go to the opposite side and took the most iconic photo in sports history. Talk about irony.
Imagine 80's Tyson trying to hit this version of Ali, he'd be hitting mostly air, Ali's speed and reflexes amazing at this time. When he was young like this his first line of defense was his legs, when he came back in the 70's he lost some of his legs, speed and reflexes and he tired more quickly, but he was still the best boxer I ever saw at coming up with what was necessary to win
Facing Liston at that time was the equivalent of facing Mike Tyson at his most menacing. A daunting prospect, but Ali was so confident in his own ability. He had Liston well sussed out before they got in the ring.

Ali in his prime was surely the most mobile heavyweight of all time.
Surly, Ali was NOT the most “mobile heavyweight” of all time! The man was a total mess, a Slobbering, Drooling, uncontrollable shaking physical mess!! Clearly, during Ali’s boxing career, his mobile skills were not good enough to allow him to escape the brutal punishment he absorbed in his FIVE LOSSES as well as other fights to prevent him from his horrible existence at the end of his life! Rocky Marciano on the other hand was a Master of Defense and of body and foot movement which allowed him to escape overwhelming punishment from his opponents! Rocky pummeled his opponents while for the most part escaping his opponents abilities to do the same to him!!!

To everyone on this post, most of which are much younger than I, I am so glad you get to see films of Muhammad Ali in the early days. I was a child during the Liston fight but I remember it well. And I remember the photos in the paper of Liston's tattered face. My Dad told us, "that is the fastest heavyweight boxer in history. He's as fast as middleweight Sugar Ray Robinson!" It was like watching a Superhero in real life.
When Ali said he was fast he weren’t kidding
Ali was a physical specimen unlike anything you'd ever seen. To top it off, he had a jaw of steel. Nothing like in the heavyweight division. Nothing.
Absolutely the man who brought Boxing back and still to this day !!!
Stupid comment! Boxing was the BIGGEST SPORT around in the 1940’s and 1950’s …Long before Cassius Clay showed up.!!!

Looking at Liston's bicep one can comes to the conclusion about Ali's ability to take the heat and that goes against Tyson.
The thing is in the sixth round Ali fought Liston on his terms, standing right in front of him and trading. And Liston still lost the round.
скорбим и помним!
It is a big shame. They took 3 years from him prime and he is still the greatest !
For more ba wars,, Ali did the right thing
Right, but what he did in this three years made him even greater.
