Dirlewanger didn't die of natural causes - he was arrested, handed over the the French and they stuck him in prison - but they 'just happened' to stick him in a wing with Polish guards and Dirlewanger was beaten to death... Given the atrocities he comitted against the Poles he got off lightly....

The poles were dogs that found their teeth when England gave them support.
The night of August 31 saw the Polish foreign minister running around Berlin looking for Hitler to tell him that Poland had changed their mind and that they agreed to the terms previously put forward.

Here are a few that were executed and they were Hans Frank, Ernst Kartenbrunner, Arthur Seay’s-Inquart, Irma Grese, Rudolph Hoess, Herman’s Goring was scheduled to be executed but cheated the hangman by committing suicide, Dorothea Binz, Maria Mandell, Johanna Borman, Franz Bottger, Karl Brandt, Wilhelm Dorr, Adolf Eichmann, Amon Goth, and many others but yes most got off scott free while others were sentenced to life and got released in less than 10 years while others sentenced to death had sentences commuted. Way too many got off way too easy especially Sepp Dietrich and many others while others were assisted in escaping to S America with help from Bishop Hudal at the Vatican who was a Nazi sympathizer and he got them the necessary documents to go to S America via the so called “rat lines”.

In reality they were probably long past caring at that point but unit morale is often tied up with traditions. One of the first things the Soviets did upon taking Berlin was rounding up all the ceremonial flags of various German units they could find and parading them. There is a photo of many of these flags and standards being held pointing to the ground by a line of soviet soldiers who are turned to face the camera.
The Liebstandarte division were also ordered to remove their cuff which bore the signature of Adolf Hitler rather than the unit's name. As a bit of trivia, the name liebstandarte means life regiment and essentially bears the same name as the senior regiment of the British Army, the Life Guards. The Swedish Army also has a unit called the Life Regiment Hussars going back to a common theme amongst European armies.

My father (a WWII Infantry officer) told me long ago that they would rather face an SS unit than a standard Wehrmacht unit. The SS (mostly) were not elite fighters, and the Wehrmacht saw far more combat than the SS did. One thing the SS was was dedicated, so they didn't surrender easily - but that didn't make them elite units, just more ideologically driven.
I worked with a couple of SS vets while stationed in Germany. One was an officer who had taught at their officer (Junker) school in Bad Tolz during the war. He was cleared by the US Army to work for us, so I gotta think his record was clean. BUT, he was a member of the SS, so not pure as the driven snow either. Most folks in my unit were unaware of his past - he just did his job and went home at the end of the day. Dude was married, but at his funeral all SEVEN of his mistresses and a ton of his children were there for it.

While stationed in West Germany at Smith Kaserne in Aschaffenburg situated northwestern Bayern. Our barracks was a former SS base. There were still iron rings morticed in the walls of the motor pool where they tethered their horses. The fanatical unit there as well as the town avidly nazi gave a great fight to Patton and his forces trying to capture the city. The battle began on March 25, 1945 and after ten hard fought deadly days the SS stronghold finally
surrendered. The combined forces of the 7th and 3rd Armies suffered 3,000 KIA, WIA, and MIA. In a news conference on April 7th 1945 Secretary of War Henry L. Before anyone gets too crazy, remember that atrocities against enemy soldiers occurred on all sides of the war. As an example check out the Chenogne massacre - Wikipedia,
an incident where 80 German soldiers were captured and machine-gunned. Worse atrocities happened on the eastern front between Germany and Russia. Horrible things happen in war and the things like the Malmady and Chenogne are examples of inhuman behavior, often ordered by lesser officers. Those of us who have never been in a war have a hard time fathoming these atrocities and it is very easy to be judgemental. I rather blame the politicians who brought on the war, not the soldiers.

Lots of SS soldiers ended up in the French Foreign Legion, where their original names and wartime records (but not tattoos) were expunged, and some even fought, and surrendered, at Dien Bien Phu. At the same time, some American Marines reported seeing SS tattoos on fellow Marines who spoke with accents. The Cold War effectively ended de-Nazification efforts by the West, and provided sanctuary for former SS soldiers.

This is in no way a backing of what they did. I would say they were doing what they thought was right, being told something over and over and really believing you were doing the right thing for your family and country is all a soldier can do. You have plenty of countries today that have totally different beliefs, that don't even see the world in a similar way, yet there's none that have almost taken over the world like these brave German men did.

Very questionable history here. Seeing that even the eastern border map of Germany was completely wrong. The Waffen SS (Army) were not the criminals like the Allgemeine (general) SS who ran the death camps. The atrocities by the Army were not unique to the Germans by any means. Surrendering soldiers were at times shot by American troops also. Peiper was not present at Malmady and did not order the killing of the American troops there. But he accepted responsibility since he was the overall commander of the guilty unit. Pots should not be calling the kettle black and there are so many exaggerations. The waffen SS were soldiers and not prison guards. In fact, many of the prison guard SS were not even German, but often Ukrainians or other eastern Europeans.

Mountbatten ordered the machine gunning of peaceful protesters, all of them women and children and was proud of it. The official count was in the hundreds, but the British only counted those who died in hospitals or on site. Many hundreds more died at home and were never counted. Mountbatten afterwards said, “ They were traitorous Irish dogs and deserved whatever they got.” The royal family blocked most of the inquiry into the deaths and still blocks inquiries even today. Mountbattens actions exacerbated the troubles and extended them for decades. The fact that the policy of no inquiries into atrocities committed by the army became standard procedure didn’t help.

The British have always sought to present themselves as decent and fair. 'The Good Guys' .To admit their dreadful deeds would reflect badly on them. Look at the concentration camps they ran in South Africa during the Boer War. Its a pattern of behaviour. These horrors too have been swept under the carpet. If we don't talk about them they never happened, and we can go on deluding ourselves. In not delivering real justice the Germans could pretend that their husbands, brothers and sons were also merely doing their duty, no more. This kind of behaviour is universal. I actually see that coming way more from the left. But one thing is for sure, anything one extreme side of the political spectrum is guilty of, you can find evidence on the other. Yeah, I got a real kick out of people that just try to say Trump is a fascist without any real logical backing up behind it

The Waffen SS was a criminal gang with a gang leader to whom they all swore loyalty and total obedience to commit whatever crime they may have been ordered to. AND they all had an identifying tattoo so when the end came they were easy to find and deal with, ridding the world of the SS. Today we have(had?) the criminal gangs of El Salvador….nowhere near as bad as the SS but they too have the Tattoo and it has made them easy to find and deal with in a country where just “being a member” is crime enough for long long prison sentences…makes them easy to round up. El Salvador is practically crime free now, apparently.

the allies murdered more German civilians, woman and children than the waffen SS ever did to allied POWs
look up allied fire storm bombings on hamburg, Dresden ect
when at wars end, only months weeks left, for no reason the allies kept carpet bombing German city's
creating firestorms , killing tens of thousands old men , woman, and children
not one allied officer charged with war crimes for thousands of deaths due to these bombing raids

Yes, 'their' actions are unforgivable. And most of 'them' are dead. WWII ended 79 years ago today. How many German WWII veterans do you imagine are still alive? German civilians were brutalized by both Allied AND German soldiers at the close of WWII. Germany today is not the Germany of the 1940s. It happens to be a beautiful country. Why wouldn't people visit?

    • @phillipsugwas

The past is not to be forgotten but prejudice should be. My daughter married to a German was at a wedding recently where some English people and their children were also guests. Her young son , fluent in English, came to her at one point telling her that one of the children who he had tried to engage with on discovering he was German had told him , ' we dont talk to Germans".
Fortunately we got to England in the 9th century, but its a close run thing.

American troops committed at least two massacres of German troops including SS and Wehrmacht in late 1944 but that is usually glossed over or ignored. Many ethnic Germans who were born outside of the Reich could not join the Wehrmacht but had to join the SS,

It was a kind of 4th branch. Compare it with US Army, Navy, Air Force , Marines.Average German soldiers were happy to know the "other ones" on their side. History is written by the winner of the war and Hollywood. The greatest enemie of historians and media is the contemporary witness.
