Tony "Two-Ton" Galento -vs- Jackie Gleason | as told to Rocky Marciano (16mm Transfer)

  • In 1960, former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was contracted to host a boxing and interview program called Main Event. Each of the 30 episodes included studio interviews between Rocky and a contemporary celebrity, actor or sports star. The interviews lasted only a few minutes each, and were followed by the feature presentation being a recent or classic boxing match. Some shows were better than others, but all the interviews were interesting, and the best ones were classic.
Here is the Jackie Gleason's famous episode with Rocky Marciano, where Gleason describes his famous altercation with Tony "Two-Ton" Galento outside a night club. I also really enjoyed their refreshing and genuine conversation.

It moved me so much when I learned that, after beating his hero Joe Louis, Marciano wept.

I like the story of Rocky, when He was in the army in England, He was approached by a U.S. Army unit who were having real trouble with a big Aussie soldier stationed near by. When down the local pubs this Aussie a tough street fighter would pick on the Americans and floor them. Anyway Rocky agreed to go down the pub with the guys and kept a low profile. Sure enough the Aussie went up to Rocky and started pushing Him, Rocky bent low and then unleashed a volley of shots into the big ugly Australian knocking him cold. This Guy was never seen again in a pub ! Which I think answers the question could Rocky be as good as Two Ton Tony in a bar brawl. Better !!

Jack Dempsey was Galento's manager for a while, and one day popped unexpectedly into the gym while Galento was supposedly training ,....but Dempsey caught Galento training lightly and not taking it seriously,....so an angry Dempsey stripped of his expensive suit short and tie,...jumped into the ring with Galento. and battered him badly ,...Galento ran from the ring to avoid further punishment,...and Dempsey calmly got dressed and said ,...."you lazy bum" ', go find yourself another manager" ... " i quit "!......

Marciano pulverizes Galento a thousand times in a row. He was every bit as tough and in infinitely better condition.

Absolute fact, no question. As tough as Galento was, he was simply no match for Rock. And after he woke up from being knocked out, he would have called Rocky a bum and said it was a lucky punch! One of boxing histories great characters.

reg5381: How were they similar? Both had tough lives, both were small by heavyweight standards, and both had tremendous power behind their punches. If Tyson didn't screw up so royally out of the ring he might have retired undefeated too.

Nothing alike except for what Cap Cave said. Both charismatic but Rock was a gentleman and refined (for a boxer) Tyson was/is Brooklyn : lively colorful dynamic and somewhat savage...whose saving grace is he got old ,mellowed and needed to make BACK some $.
      Love em both!
