The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

4. Against Don Cockell
5. And his last defence was against 41 year old former light heavyweight Archie Moore.
Who were the previous 43 opponents Rocky fought to pad up his record ? Who were these guys ?
This is why Muhammad Ali, in spite of his loses, has a better resume than Marciano. Because after Ali made a comeback after nearly 4 years in exile, in which he was previously undefeated, he beat Oscar Bonavena, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, George Foreman, George Chuvalo and Ernie Shavers.

Says who ? Rocky Marciano’s business partner was Frankie Carbo a Mafia Boss who ran the fight game from the early 1940s thru the late 1950s . Marciano never fought more than two legitimate opponents in his entire career. All of Marciano’s opponents were inexperienced with less than 14 fights on their records or were old fighters. Fought the top contenders and champions, and was one of the smallest heavyweight champions in history yet when he won he typically left his opponents out cold or nearly so. Unbeaten is the story of an immigrant son who chased the American dream in the middle of the 20th Century. Marciano’s story unfolds in the back alleys of New England and the musty gyms of New York in the years after World War 2. Rocky moved through a romantic era of guys and dolls, hustlers and gamblers, crusty trainers and sleazy managers, glamorous celebrities and notorious mobsters.
What I knew about Marciano before I read the book Unbeaten was that he cowardly retired during his prime right before he would have had to fight the likes of Patterson, Liston, and Clay to name just a few. I did not know about his conduct during World War 2 that got him locked up in jail for 2 years. I did not know of the mob's influence in his career.
Nor did i realize that his list of opponents while he was champion were of dubious quality. Joe Louis was far beyond his prime. Journeyman Joe Walcott was 38/39 years old. Former middleweight turned light heavyweight grandfather Archie Moore was 41 and Ezzard Charles best years were behind him at light heavyweight.
For the last decade of his life Marciano wandered America, disillusioned, untrusting, hiding his money, cheating on his wife, consorting with the mobsters and loansharking. He hung around with Frank Sinatra and a number of "made guys." Rocky was not a good businessperson and was lousy with investing and saving money. He left his family penniless. Again his boxing record is offset by the low level of his opponents. He died relatively young in a plane crash due to his complete disregard of intentionally flying during horrible weather conditions inorder to collect money.

The first Walcott fight was brutal. They beat each other to a pulp for 13 rounds. Both had the heart of a champion and both were great gentleman as well as boxers.

Pure CLASS through & through. He NEVER talked bad about an opponent.
He was the people's champion, always acting like just a regular guy. Never self-aggrandizing, always open and honest, always entertaining, always humble, and always respectful. He had the shortest arms of any fighter of his day but packed an extremely heavy punch with either hand. Then, his heart and conditioning were second to none.
Now this is a rare thing - an undisputed champian ; Rocky is , in every interview ive seen him in , has been absolutely articulate and showing NO signs of the dreaded punch drunk speech all the other greats display - amazing

Rocky Marciano shouldn’t even be considered a half decent clown in terms of boxing. Marciano’s opponents records stink to high heaven. Frankie Carbo the MAFIA BOSS sure could pick the set ups for his business partner Rocco Francis Marchegiano. Great invincibility 48 months 43 fights, perfect dream Frankie had more than likely cleaned up on those bets of set ups. Marciano’s records should be wiped clean off the Annals of Boxing History. Marciano is a disgrace, a lousy joke.

I love watching him speak. So humble and gentlemanly. He was absolutely the greatest. How can anything be better than a perfect record with no losses. I was 9 years old when he died on Aug 31st 1969. I remember reading the headlines that he had died in a plane crash. It saddened me. Rest in peace Rocky, the greatest ever.

Walcott and the rest- he was the top of his game and the best ever. no question. the best. and so humble and respectful. found his punching power when he was in wales in the US army in WW2 did he not? just watch the 52 yankee stadium fight with Walcott. Wow. Just the very best ever. period. what a champion.

Rocky Marciano will always be one of my favorites but I'm realist that understands his limitations. To think he could beat 6' 9" 277 lb 85" reach Tyson Fury or 6' 7.5" 250 lb 80" reach Vitali Klitschko is not practical. It's possible but not logical since the law of physics would be against him. I remember the old saying, "The bigger they are the harder they fall" and "TIMBER." But against proven professional Super Heavyweights it's very rare.

True story: He broke my grandfather’s nose. He was a training partner when he trained in my state and the workouts he did were inhuman. He could collapse your lung with a 4” punch.
They were horsing around after sparring and Rocky popped him which gave him his signature feature the rest of his life. My 4’9” Italian grandmother then proceed to give Rocky a beating (that he laughed thru) with one of her wooden spoons, in her kitchen when he had to go explain it to her. Then he ate about 2lbs of her cavatelli (with trimmings).

Nor did i realize that his list of opponents while he was champion were of dubious quality. Joe Louis was far beyond his prime. Journeyman Joe Walcott was 38/39 years old. Former middleweight turned light heavyweight grandfather Archie Moore was 41 and Ezzard Charles best years were behind him at light heavyweight.
For the last decade of his life Marciano wandered America, disillusioned, untrusting, hiding his money, cheating on his wife, consorting with the mobsters and loansharking. He hung around with Frank Sinatra and a number of "made guys." Rocky was not a good businessperson and was lousy with investing and saving money. He left his family penniless. Again his boxing record is offset by the low level of his opponents. He died relatively young in a plane crash due to his complete disregard of intentionally flying during horrible weather conditions inorder to collect money.

He was knocked down in the first round by Jersey Joe Walcott with a left hook. It was a tough fight for him to come back in the 11th but did it .

Facts proving how small the 50s heavyweight era actually was: -(Archie Moore is the only boxer in history to be ranked as #1 contender in 3 of the original 8 weight classes: middleweight in 1942, light heavyweight in 1950, heavyweight in 1955. Archie fought as a middleweight from 1935 to 1945, compiling a record of 70-9-5. Moore in his best years at light heavyweight went 79-10-3 from 1945 to his clash with Marciano in 1955. Case closed.
The 50s heavyweight division was all about the light heavyweights (Moore, Charles, Maxim, Bivins, Johnson, Pastrano, Marshall, Matthews, etcetera) fightin back and forth 40 times amongst each other. The other dominant person was cruiserweight Walcott who lost to light heavyweights Charles twice, Fox twice, Maxim, Brothers, Taylor, AND middleweights Mays, Palmer, and Ketchell. Journeyman Walcott lost all throughout his entire career, beginning, middle, and end.
In summary Rocky's best 3 opponents were 2 light heavyweights and 1 cruiserweight. And to make matters worse, Moore was factually 41 years of age and Walcott was 38 and 39. End of.
(And for those several bigger opponents that Rocky fought who weighed up to 250 lbs were TERRIBLE boxers, otherwise we would constantly hear about them)

I'm a big Marciano fan more than Ali, Foreman, Frazier or Holmes fan but I humbly and seriously do not think Marciano would have as successfully been able to handle Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Frazier or even Liston as well as he handled the fighters he faced during his 49-0 career. There is a continuing argument about who is the greatest and which will never be known because all are long ago deceased now most never having actually faced each other in their prime. Foreman fought Lyle and Young after he was defeated against Ali and after he went the longest time in his career without a fight. The only year in Foreman's first run 1969 to 1977 that he didn't fight a bout was in 1975. Plus Foreman pounded Lyle against the ropes and might have scored a KO, but due to a timekeeping error, the bell rang with a minute still remaining in the round and Lyle survived dragging the fight on more dramatically longer than under the rules it should have. Louis fought Marciano when he was a sad shadow of what he actually used to be. Ali fought Holmes when he was a sad shadow of what he actually use to be. Holmes also never faced the Foreman before his 1974 defeat against Ali. The unbeaten prime Foreman who quickly destroyed the Norton without breaking a sweat that gave Holmes the most trouble in Holmes unbeaten run.

I believe that there wasn't a phony bone in his body...and of course a sound mind and humble. Marciano was a great champion! not a scientific fighter, but basically a hard hitter. Cassius Clay said that he would be his toughest fight. Joe Louis called him the greatest fighter ever. What made him what he was was his heart and determination. He trained harder than any fighter that ever entered a boxing ring!
Had little rocky had a normal duration boxing career like "Everyone" else did, he woulda had to face the likes of Patterson, Machen, Johansson, Folley, Liston, Jones, Clay, Terrell, Cleveland, and Chuvalo just to name a few. Instead he only had to deal with Light-heavyweights similar to Matthews, Lowry, Charles, Moore, etc. Little rocky is damned lucky he quit when he did.

Gypsy King Fury would keep little Rocky at arm's length and force him back whenever he felt crowded. He'd jab, turn and bewilder him for as long as wanted, and if Fury felt so inclined, he'd walk him down Kronk style and smash out a stoppage. And none of this, "if he can't reach his head he'll go to the body", either. That's just bull****. Fury's lead would keep Marciano too far away as is. He ain't getting the opportunities to impose his workrate and definitely doesn't hit hard enough to stop him. Fury jabs him into oblivion. Heck, Fury can land 4 or 5 jabs a round and win the round. Foreman probably the most formidable puncher in boxing history said that Liston is the only man he ever faced that made him back up and revert to boxing. Watch the footage of Foreman destroying Frazier twice and of Liston destroying Patterson twice. That’s what would happen to little Rocky if he met Foreman or Liston.
Sonny had an-albatross 84 inch reach. Rocky had a-stubby 67 inch reach. A 17 inch reach advantage is a tall order to overcome, but when the man with the reach advantage is the most fearsome puncher in history it’s insurmountable. Marciano’s style was tailor made for Liston. Rocky would get knocked into tomorrow before he could get close enough to land any damaging shots of his own. Liston’s power and reach would have been too much for the plodding face first style of Marciano.
You can't really pit fighters from different eras against each other. How would Liston fare against today's HWs, for instance? Consider that Marciano intentionally kept his weight low for stamina purposes. After retirement, he easily gained 50 lbs. So, he could have gained 15-20 pounds to fight Liston, who was only about 210 lbs., himself. Liston was also somewhat slow and never really faced a devastating inside puncher with stamina like Marciano. It would be an interesting fight. How would Marciano respond to Liston's great jab? How would Liston deal with Marciano's stamina, relentlessness and inside punching?

Rocky Marciano will always be one of my favorites but I'm realist that understands his limitations. To think he could beat 6' 9" 277 lb 85" reach Tyson Fury or 6' 7.5" 250 lb 80" reach Vitali Klitschko is not practical. It's possible but not logical since the law of physics would be against him. I remember the old saying, "The bigger they are the harder they fall" and "TIMBER." But against proven professional Super Heavyweights it's very rare.
Any heavyweight champion under 200 pounds should be immediately removed from all record books or an asterisk (*) placed before their name meaning *Cruiserweight. Eventually it's gonna happen, mark my words.

@Bobby D Consider that in the December 1962 Ring magazine poll of 40 boxing experts it was Jack Dempsey that was rated the # 1 Heavyweight of all time with Joe Louis 2nd, Jack Johnson 3rd and Marciano finishing a distant 7th, way behind Dempsey. If he was considered 7th in 1962 how does he propel to the top 5, when since then we have had Muhammad Ali who faced much tougher competition, the big power hitting George Foreman, Larry Holmes who made 20 title defenses, the bigger, faster and more powerful Mike Tyson, and the giant Lennox Lewis who at 6’ 5” 245 pounds would enjoy a 60 pound weight advantage over Marciano? This is a key point. Nat Fleischer rated Marciano at # 10, Charley Rose rated him at # 9, McCallum's survey of old-timers had him at # 9. No major historian who saw Maricano in their lifetime thought he was a top 7 all time heavyweight and 67 years have passed since Rocky retired.
I understand the formula ranking bodies use. Problem is they never use WEIGHT as criteria. For example: THE RING GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHTS OF ALL TIME has '185' lb Marciano 4th and '165' lb Bob Fitzsimmons 20th (nonsense). THE RING acknowledges 18 different weight classes but they don't acknowledge WEIGHT to determine THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHTS OF ALL TIME. So middleweight Fitzsimmons should be ranked higher than giant Riddick Bowe?? And to make matters worse THE RING has '165' lb Fitzsimmons ranked No. 8 as the Most Powerful Puncher of all time -- Wiki.
Anybody that takes these rankings with more than a grain of salt are not only casual but desperate. Rocky fanboys are the only ones that cling to these rankings, quotes, and stats as if it were life and death. You'll never see Foreman, Holmes, Lewis, Tyson or Klitschko brothers being defended with quotes and/or rankings. But with Rocky fans it's always Don Turner said this or Ali said that, or little Rocky was voted the greatest heavyweight fighter of the 20th century and the greatest puncher of all-time. Sportswriters get paid good money for their vivid imaginations.
@Bobby D Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles only weighed 181 pounds when he won his 'vacant' Super Heavyweight title against cruiserweight Journeyman Jersey Joe Walcott in 1949. Exactly two years later Charles weighed a massive 182 pounds when he lost his Super Heavyweight title to you guessed it, 194 pound Journeyman Joe again. The fact that Walcott was granted 6 title attempts in a 6 year span speaks volumes about how weak the Heavyweight division was at this time. Five of these title opportunities came immediately after a Walcott Loss!!!
So how the hell did Walcott get 6 attempts? Because the so-called 'Heavyweight' division was nonexistent, and he was the closest to being genuine Heavyweight. The 200+lb Heavyweights that did exist (Wilson Shkor Jackson) were horseshit. 230lb undercard B-level Bill Wilson lost 50% of all his fights. 220lb C-level Johnny Shkor lost 62% of all his fights. 254lb amateur Humphrey "The-Bum" Jackson had 4 wins 3 losses.
Journeyman Joe was B-level undercard fighter at best. Overall he Lost (20) times and was KOd (6) times. Walcott's most notable victories include wins over Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles, Light heavyweight Joey Maxim and Light heavyweight Harold Johnson. Light heavyweight Charles Lost (25) times and was KOd (7) times. Light heavyweight Maxim Lost (29) times. Light heavyweight Johnson Lost (11) times and was KO'd (5) times. Light heavyweight Archie Moore Lost (23) times was and KOd (7) times. Would it have been ok if Marciano Lost (25) times and was KTFO (7) times? Of course not. If little Marciano had so much as a 'Draw', he wouldn't even be ranked top 20.
Lennox Lewis constantly catches hell for being KO'd (2) times. Sonny Liston constantly catches hell for losing to Light heavyweight Marty Marshall. Yet it's always acceptable for Charles, Walcott and Moore to lose a combined (68) times. Why? Answer the question. Why?
