My father told me how back in the early fifties they would go downtown (Newark) to one of the many theaters to see live shows starring all the big stars like these three and many many other great stars. It's hard to imagine now but Newark had 65 theaters, some of them the biggest and finest around. I wish it could be the 50's forever !

I wish I cld time travel to the fifties as well!! The 50’s and 60’s must’ve been a real swell time to live in the USA! Yes, now we have all the luxuries and technologies, but we traded it all out for real life and real love, and real community and American values, and so much more! What a shame we weren’t able to find a healthy balance!

If you are too young to have seen them you can’t understand what a big deal they were , the whole country watched.
In the 60s You could send away for a carnival kit and me and my three brothers did that for years.

What a guy Jerry was and is! "No money" as he hangs up the phone. Always thinking of the kids. Man. 100 was a shipload in those days. "Such a good boy". "A couple of girls and some liquor", two lines from The Great One which would have zero humor content if delivered by anyone else. I'll see these guys in heaven with Bob Hope's ongoing show, entertaining the troops.

Stephanie Santos I'm not sure how those telethons worked, but could it have been that the woman had already made the donation to one of the telephone girls in the background before being put through to Jerry, and then got so excited speaking to him in person that she forgot to tell him? I don't know, but presumably the callers had to leave their details with someone so the donation could go through?

So it's rare to see much of his comedy shtick over the years. I was one year old in 1952, so don't remember this. By the time I saw a telephon, Martin and Lewis had long broken up.

For some strange reason to me right now Jerry looks like John Travolta facially right down to the dimple in his chin..different hair and vocals but they could pass for family..

Always thought Jackie G. & Raymond M. looked like brothers -- in part b/c of their manly frames but mainly b/c of their luminous & beautiful blue eyes(!)

I know that this was Jerry's charity and no-one can ever take away from him the fact that he raised huge amounts over the years for muscular dystrophy, but I couldn't help but notice the difference between his and Deans telephone manner. Dean was very warm and friendly but I'm afraid that Jerry came across as quite patronising, and at times almost rude, to people who were maybe donating money that they could ill afford.

I met Jerry Lewis back in the 80's and he was a COMPLETE ASSHOLE! He did great movies.....but as a human being, he's a P.O.S. of a person!

You're right. I had the displeasure of having him as a customer in the 1970s, and he is the most self-impressed jerk I have ever met.

That's what MANY have said about him as well......some of it must be TRUE! Even MOST of it! I bet The Lord put him in his place as soon as he left this life! Dean and Jackie were TOP'S!!

Oh yes, I too was the 1st born of a PRICK! Nick Sr. was a good father ( not great but good).. until I was 14 in 1977 and he married his 4th wife and never looked at me again! As for my "sister" ( who I will never speak to again, as I have tried to make peace with over the many years since our parents divorce 40 years ago)....her father was always there for her! I get it, when you/we speak the truth we become the asshole! FUCK THAT! I have no shame! Sr. passed in 2013 and I feel nothing..............yes it's sad but I am now 54 and must live my life! God bless' ....my mother is pretty over the top herself, as we no longer speak as well...it's like this, if ANY person no matter what "Title" they have....cannot meet you halfway in life, FUCK EM!!
