- We take a look at the new Pirelli Scorpion AT+ in our studio. Pirelli reckons this tyre is bigger and badder than the previous Scorpion ATR, but what makes it better? Take a look as we give it a once over.
Full Transcript:
Gudday, and welcome back to Tyre Review. Today in the warehouse, we have got the new Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus. Now this is the update from their previous all-terrain tyre, which was the Pirelli Scorpion ATR. So ATR is the old one, AT Plus is the new one.
The ATR was actually a reasonably well-rated tyre on Tyre Review. It's actually got 4.1 out of 5 stars last time I checked. So this tyre has got to do pretty well to actually get better than that. Pirelli's pretty stoked with it obviously. It's a brand new tyre, so they're talking it up. But they're saying that it's really good off road, so good for rocky, sand, and general sort of off road terrain that's not full mud terrain sort of stuff. But they're also saying that it's really good for on road as well.
But taking a closer look at the tyre, Pirelli's says they've designed this tyre to actually eject everything out the sides, so mud, rocks, water, the lot. They've designed it to be a more aggressive tyre that's actually going to clear itself out much better than the previous tyre.
They also point out that it's got a newly reinforced carcass on the side here. The tread blocks here on the upper side will make a really aggressive ... or more aggressive. So I actually quite like the look the those, because they look great when you're in the mall, but they also might be more likely to bite into the terrain if, say, you're stuck in a rut or whatever off road.
These tyres are also a three-peak mountain snowflake rated, which means that they're certified for conditions beyond what normal mud and snow tyres would be able to handle. So they're supposed to provide better traction on snow than most other tyres would do. And maybe this is actually something to look out for because, hey, I live in Tasmania and we get snow here every now and then. Even snow on the beaches. So if I get stuck in snow, then I want a tyre that's three-peak mountain snowflake rated, because it means that I'm more likely to not get stuck.
I also really like the look of the tread pattern on this tyre. You can see that it's obviously quite widely spaced, so they've got good space here for ejecting rocks, mud, snow, etc. But they've also got a good continuous tread pattern. Whichever cross-section of the tyre you take, there is always a lot of tread on the road, which means that they're going to be nice and quiet. They're also going to offer a lot of on-road grip. And these sipes here are also supposed to give you extra grip when you're on the road as well, because they're supposed to lock together and provide really solid tread blocks. But also off road, help it to conform around rocks and that sort of stuff.
So Pirelli says this is a really good tyre in off-road situations. It says it's a really good tyre in on-road situations. So have they been successful in making the unicorn of all-terrain tyres that's perfect in all worlds? We're going to find that out. This is actually going in on the Ford Ranger, Tyre Review Ford Ranger as our long-term test tyre, which means we're going to be running for more than 10,000 Ks.
It's also one of the tyres that's participating in our Tyre Review winter adventure, which is going to be on the west coast of Tasmania this year, which we're really, really excited about. So we'll give it a hell of a thrashing during that and then report back to you about exactly what we thought about the tyre during that time. So again, 10,000 Ks, longterm test, but also the winter adventure. So stay tuned. We'll update you on how we went.

Absolutely love these tyres highly recommend them
I bought mine here in Canada for my Toyota RAV4, they are made in Brazil, excellent grip on the road, nice looking and great quality, 100% recommended
Dude how in brazil !! Where is the factory 🏭????Cause i buy same 😅
@@Sas_Xforce they are stamped Made in Brazil on a side, take a look on yours, but don’t worry they are pretty good quality, far from a Taurus pistol 😄
I have these on my Expedition and now my work van {load range E} Excellent tires for the money, very good snow traction. Noise level is good for this type of tire.
Just put a set of 5 on my 4WD and they are far quieter than the Dick Cepeks that I had on before, very comfortable for an aggressive tread and quiet! Looking forward to taking it offroad. So far I give it a 5 star.
That's great to hear Nick!
Seems like everywhere i look people are giving them 5 stars. My LR3 is about to get them because of this.
Ordered mine for my 2013 Ford F-150. Can’t wait to have them installed and use them on the road!
How are they treating you now?
Looking to some for my f150 too. how are they?
I had the original ATR on my prado, and although it didnt look very aggressive it had really good offroad grip and on road holding...
Good to hear Tomas! There's a full long term review of the AT+ over here if you're interested:

Great feedback, thanks Bishop09!
You notice the tread pattern is P and S for Pirelli Scorpion? 👍🏼 😎
Ohhhh sheeeeit. I'd never noticed that, now I can't unsee it! 10,000 internet points for you, sir!
have a set on my old 77 dodge ram love them great traction on rain snow mud everything
@Joe W yes sir
My Panda Cross now with Scorpions atr 185/65/15 ! Incredible in all terrain
are they loud on highway
The reviewer did not make a differentiation between the LT and passenger construction of the tyre, although the one on the screen was of the LT type. I think this is because Australia does not import through official dealers the passenger construction. I tend to keep clear of the LT construction, as I do not want to ride on the concrete circles. But maybe I am wrong ? This was why I watched the review hoping to learn the truth, though to no avail. The review did not seem to be the review, as it could be described in a sentence: "Here I am touching the the threadblocks of the tyre which look rugged, and we are going to put the tyre on our truck, and see". Also, I would like to note that the sipes on the Scorpion tyres are not just to "give a good grip on the road", but to allow the snow to get into the sipes, and thus to give the winter rating. The sipes are handy for biting into the water film on the road, and into the dust-covered gravel. The snowflake symbol does not mean the tyre has a good, if any, grip on snow; it just means that the thread compound would not go stiff in low temperatures.
I have a 2020 Toyota RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid (57,000km+) and due for new tyres. These look pretty good! Wanting to know if anyone has these on a RAV4 like mine and how you are going with them? Concern is noise while driving, are they quiet?
Took your "thoroughly recommend" rating and installed a set of these on my LR Freelander 2. Will update you all once i have put some miles under my belt with them. Initial reaction..they look and feel tough as nails. Itching to try them on some snow, dirt and gravel tracks....
Awesome, that's great! Let us know how you go with them after you've got some K's under your belt on www.tyrereview.com.au

Tyre Review have done nearly 5000 km on these new tires and can say these are surely the tires every SUV owner should have if they drive primarily on bad Tarmac and do long distances. Best decision I took. Thanks to you.
Hey Kabir, that's great! I'm stoked they've worked out for you.
What about ride comfort & noise level?
how would you rate them from-1-to-10 ?
thanks !
Hope u see this video before middle week cause i am having my maverick and want to change stock str pireli, i will do 70 pavement city road,vs maybe winter [ rain, going skiing, snow vacacyion off road if needed.
Stock are 225 65 r17 31lb atr pirelli, and i am between this pirelli plus or the falken at3 in 235 65 r17 wich its weight is same 31.1 the same as stock atr.
I think the at3 sre somehow better all rounfd than pireli plus but dont know about the noise ....could it be to much?
Question for you mate. On wet roads/hard rainy days would you prefer these pirelli scorpion AT Plus or the Yokohama Geolander AT go15?
We have been getting hit with a lot of hard rain this summer and I'm in need of new tires soon. Which would you recommend driving during rain 🌧️⛈️
I just had the pleasure of driving on roads in Tasmania on the Scorpion and so good in the wet
Hey there. Is the tread as deep as the Falken wild peak at3w ?? In the video it doesn't seem to look as deep.
How are you getting on with these are they performing well? How are they in dry and wet mud?
Given that you like these and live in Tazmania, then I assume these are good for someone he lives in a hot climate (Southern California) - good assumption, if I’m 95% commuter, 5% weekend warrior.
Yep, I reckon you'd be good with these 💪
Hi what size would you recommend for 2020 Ranger XLT with 18' wheels 265/65 or 275/65.
Hi mate, I'm usually of the opinion that bigger is better, but it'd be worth doing a quick bit of research (Facebook groups are usually handy) to make sure that the larger version won't scrub on stock lift. I don't think they will, but worth double checking. The trade off will be slightly worse fuel efficiency (debatable with only a marginal size change like this), and a couple of other things, but it'll be about 6mm taller overall, so 3mm difference in lift, so really not much difference!
What do you think about the soft sides only 2 ply
I certainly had no issue with them. 2 ply vs 3 ply really comes down to the intended use. If you're going to be banging around the trails in a heavier vehicle, you might benefit from having an additional ply. If you're more conscious of comfort, and doing medium grade trails, 2 ply is probably entirely suitable, really.
What is the noise like on the highway?
Hey Jason, they're actually really good - not much noise in the cabin of the Ranger at all.
Quiet ,I've had mine for 19000 miles and have had no issues while they've been on my AT4 would buy again
Will these work on 2 wheel drive ??
Hi mate, if they make a size that fits your vehicle, yes they'll work. I guess the question is, to what degree? If you're looking for something to give you more grip on lower quality roads and gravel tracks, then they'll be a heckuva lot better than road oriented tyres. They won't turn a 2wd into a 4x4 off road beast, though, so you'd still have to pick your tracks.
@@TyreReviewVideos thanks!! I still got my jeep with the stock tires and feel like it needs more grip. I was asking because I put it on 2wd when on the road and was concerned the tires would not be designed for that type of car.
Ah! You'll be sweet with these, as they hold the road so well. I had them on my Ranger, which is light in the rear end, but still drove the hell out of them 👌
tarta exe Why wouldn’t they?
These tires suck balls in the snow
Strange; the rest of the internet and Tire Rack reviews disagree.
