Why do most if not all E38 models make that little rattle noise at startup? I've tried everything from timing chain, tensioners, even rebuilding the Vanos and still get this 1 second rattle sometimes.
It's all the VANOS. Once the car sits and the check valves lose their oil pressure you get the famous VANOS rattle. I just deal with it. The only time it doesn't rattle is if the car is turned off for not long enough to lose the oil pressure and the next subsequent startup is normal. I.e. going inside the store or refueling or something like that.
@@HollywoodHornet that’s exactly how mine behaves. Like I said, I hate the noise it makes even for the one second time. Is this something that can be fixed or is the bmw 4.4L inherently doomed? I had the same issue with my Range Rover. It also has the 4.4L engine.
use a metal pipe attached / slide over your ratchet for extra leverage

I'm not sure if you are instructing how to replace it if the camera isn't showing anything. All I can see is your elbow
