  • My car has been blowing blue smoke upon startup and one of the likely causes is the CCV valve. There is a diaphragm at the back of the intake manifold that will eventually fail, and when it does, it allows oil to go places it shouldn't, mainly your combustion chamber.
So in this video, I will be showing you how to replace this part WITHOUT removing the intake manifold. Also, I show you how to deal with a stripped bolt because I love you all so much.
Roll up your sleeves, and let's get ready to do WORK.

Well made video! By the way, the bolts for the CCV aren't torx bit, they are RIBE R8 bits. If you look on the face of the bolt it says RIBE, which is very similar to torx, but not the same. That is one of the reasons that these bolts are commonly stripped out on removal is because the torx T30 has sharper lobes that are easier to strip in the RIBE bolt.
Also, sometimes you can spray a silicone spray on the joint between the hose and the plastic bits and use a screw driver to lift up the edges and let the silicone seep in a bit and sometimes they'll come off a bit easier. :)

Yeah those hoses were petrified! Thanks for the info on the RIBE bolt.

This video is the best because it helps us deal with the emotional part of the repair as much as the actual steps for the repair. We all are in it together lol.

Hey, thanks for the video... I did the same thing this weekend, 6 hours yesterday, 3 hours today. The only difference was I used a power drill to distroy the plastic tunnel to clear the way to that bolt. The CCV on my car I believed was the original. I owned the car since 2004. The bolts are pretty siezed up and took larger force to get loose. All the smaller special tools were too weak. It took a T30 on a 3/8 wrench to loosen the first 6 and strip this last one... wish I had paid attention to the reply below about the RIBE R8 bits... I guess it's all a part of the cost of owning an older BMW... lol

Drill would have worked for me if I wasn’t ham fisted. I didnt want to hit anything else by accident. Every job is 1 stripped bolt away from being a nightmare

Has anyone of you ever tried to replace the lone membrane only? It's doable and all you need is new CCV valve in your hands. You just open the round cover that holds new diaphragm by gently unlashing knobs. Carefully.
You have to do simmilar on engine. No need to tackle with screws in the back. I have a M62B44 in E39 so maybe there is a bit more space there, but both engines/cars are perfectly doable.

    • @ARPerez

I read about it but decided against it since BMW plastic on a 200k car is about as robust as the economy right now
