I also have this exact bmw 740il 2003 and I do need some help with the motor. Either find another motor or fix the one that’s in it if you could contact me about it!
1:42 The date format in Germany is DD/MM/YY so the filter was made on July 6th, 2007 :-) You got a real nice e38 7 series there. My grandpa had a silver e39 5 series back then and these cars are awesome :-)
Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm currently in the process of restoring my E38 too, have done the valve covers and lower pan gaskets as these are the most common oil leak. I'll be replacing the front suspension next. Please keep us posted on your next task!
I think these are better than the Tik toks and shorts since you can explain and show more detail. After 10 years working on Imports mostly I’m finally getting in to Euros since they are headache if you are not use to them and the German terminology. Keep it up as much as possible!

Looks great! I have a 2000 740IL with 39,000 miles on it. I'll be doing my valve covers soon. The problem with painting magnesium is that if off gases. That is what causes it to bubble and flake off. It must be deoxidized and pretreated first. Degrease it with an alkaline cleaner, apply a chromic acid treatment and then neutralize the acid. If you use a zinc chromate paint and primer you will get results that last. This is why powder coaters steer away from coating magnesium.
My son’s mom owns a 2005 BMW 545i with the 4.4 liter N62 V8 and I’m doing the valve cover gaskets and upper timing chain cover gaskets along with a bunch of other things. The valve covers in her car do not come off this easily. Being a smaller car than the 7 Series means that her 545i has a smaller engine bay and a much tighter fit. It took me an hour just to remove all the beauty covers, air boxes, filters, strut brace and other miscellaneous items just to get to the point of actually starting to remove the valve cover. Then you have the oil dipstick and fuel line in the way not to mention the Valvetronic motors and ignition wiring harness etc. I enjoy working on cars but BMW’s have proven to be challenging for someone who is not familiar with them.
@@JamiesGarage1 definitely not a job for a beginner. I’m finding out that BMW’s are something that most people will enjoy more when the warranty is still active. If the warranty has expired expect to dish out a lot to keep your car maintained.
Awesome videos Jamie, I have found that baking the valve covers for a few hours before painting helps to bring the solvents and oil to the surface of that porous magnesium and helps with durability and longevity. Maybe someone reading this will take my advice. Thanks!
Ya when doing high heat paint especially its best to bake it first. Some even say to paint it while its still hot. It bonds/cures the paint much better.
Excellent video! I'm getting ready to do my 2002 540i valve covers and this video showed me a lot of the details that were missing in some of the other ones I have watched. Thank you!
I found step one to removing paint stripper from non-flat metal parts is to hit it with the pressure washer. works better and is faster than than trying to scrape curvy surfaces. also don't wait too long; the stripper can dry out and leave a crusty paint stripper mess.
I used to have a 2001 740iL with the M package just like this, except black. I loved it. Unfortunately RUclips wasn't yet a thing at the time I owned it and I wasn't fully aware of the masterpiece that I had in my possession and sadly let it go prematurely. Some regrets marinate and intensify over time.
Awesome job w the valve covers. I never knew they were actually silver from the factory. Every one i have ever seen had the color like when you took them off. BTW, i would imagine powdercoaters dont like doing magnesium because of the process. Powdetcoating is electrely charged. Its probably something with the metallurgy that powdercoating doesnt stick to magnesium as well.

After the E38s and E39s were replaced with the E65/E66 (fourth generation 7-series) and E60 (fifth generation 5-series), these cars fell off the map for me. I own an E32, and I like the E34 also, as well as the E38 and E39.
Great high definition video and commentary. I really enjoyed this video. I hope to one day own a car like this, perhaps as a collectors item to enjoy it once in a while. I would also like to build a e46 with a BMW OEM v8.
This is a wrong primer to use. First layer for metals like aluminium, magnesium, zinc covering has to be acid primer and nothing else. These metals known to oxidise in the atmosphere very cuickly, the acetone that you have used for degreasing did took some of the oxidation, but also did get back after u finished degreasing. This is why high penetraing primer on an acid base has to be used. Your "hight temp" primer is on alkid base and will fell off shortly. Right technology for magnesium valve covers would be - acid primer, then acryl primer (because u cannot put a paint directly over acid primer), then high temp paint.
Ah thank you! Finally someone who knows how to prep magnesium for paint. Few questions: is there any difference when using 2k paints and possibly not spray cans. I mean, can i spray 2k paint over that acid primer without the acryl primer? Is any acid primer good enough, ie spray can version from a cheap store? Can i do acid primer, then 2k epoxy primer, then 2k final coat or is the acid primer 1k and starts to boil the other layers?

Depends on what you're doing, manufacturer, and where you get them. There are some very good quality aftermarket parts for bmw, there are also some junk ones, just like every car.
