Nice powder job and video! Was about to paint my valve covers last summer during gasket change, but then i read somewhere the covers are some sort of combination of magnesium and other metals and that it's really hard to work on them properly if you want a clean job. So i didn't do it because a had to put it together in the same day (it's my daily). The coating from the factory is just terrible after many years. That laser looked really handy for that. I think that an epoxy primer and sanding could've maybe helped with those imperfections. Maybe i'll try that with mine.
Thanks! yes, its magnesium, and the casting is absolutely awful on all of these.. some filler and epoxy would help for sure, but my buddy did it in couple of hours, so there wasnt really time. i also didnt want to risk the filler or primer to start peeling off after a while, since almost every coating you put on this doesnt last :-D
I'm actually replacing my valve covers with brand new ones I bought made from aluminium. I already did the driver's side but ran into an issue with the passenger side when I was removing and putting in brand new NGK spark plugs. The previous owner's shop stripped cylinder 2's threads and used a helicoil to put in the plug. Now I need to rethread it or put in a helicoil. I've been unlucky with my E38 numerous times.
oh wow, i am sorry to hear that :-/ at least my threads are okay, i was actually thinking about the exact situation you had, because spark plugs should be torqued to 25nm i believe? i tried to torque them but it felt too much, so i just did them by feel..
@@TheFuxxoWorksGarage Yeah, I do not use the factory torques either. I have read horror stories of people using factory torque specs on their valve covers and it stripped. I just made sure to use a good amount of Honda Bond 4 in the tight nooks and crannies. I'm waiting on the helicoil to arrive for my cylinder 2 since I can't rethread the hole as the previous owner's shop drilled a bigger hole to accommodate their helicoil.
@@TheFuxxoWorksGarage I managed to fix it! I got rid of almost all of the oil leaks! I just have one left. And it is the oil line o-ring failure from the driver's side.
How much love and details, absolute Fantastic 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I just had this done on my M62 covers too minus the laser but we did a pre bake before powder coating. These came out nice!
thank you :-) i was reading about the pre-bake, but because the laser heated them up, the pre-bake wasnt needed at all
@@TheFuxxoWorksGarage my thoughts exactly. Ours looks real close! I will post soon.
