Will they Run? Straight-8 Showdown! Packard vs Buick, Part 2...
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- Hi! As promised, it's time for Straight-8 Showdown! In Part two we'll continue disassembling the mighty Packard flathead and try our hydraulic rig out on the Buick Fireball to see if we can make it budge! These are dinosaurs from the age of the extinction of the in-line 8 cylinder configuration; both the Packard and Buick types would be gone by 1955, so I thought we should see if they could be made to run again...
The "rules" are: 2 teams, every Agent is on one team or the other. No time limit, no real budget other than for gaskets or small items. The goal is to get your team's Straight-8 machine to the end of the yard and back under its own steam. In the event it is close, there will be a "Concours d'Elephants" to determine the victor...

Seized straight 8 showdown zero budget is probably the most awesome thing on the internet. Not to take anything away from the Fury splicefest,. No one does this stuff, and I love it!
Another brilliant episode from the best car show on the web. A refreshing departure from fake deadlines and flip flops.
Totally awesome! You guys are having way to much fun! Dean is over the top! Good to see everyone having a good time! And the plate!
That was educational!
A few minutes of this is better than all episodes of Overhaulin combined.
Overhaulin is great, but they skip the really nasty crap that needs to be solved to make something actually run. Anybody can put a 383 stroker crate motor in something. You guys are doing something special. Almost makes me want to start smoking pot! MacGyver eat your heart out!!
This is dramatic excitement at its best, I've been glued to my laptop watching these episodes. This could be the best reality TV show ever. But its fine just the way it is. If Mark Burnett happens to come strolling in the yard don't let him in. No one needs an immunity piston. Old forgotten cars being brought back to life. Zero budget. ingenious methods, Fun times, good guys, keeping it real. Thank you!
This is riveting entertainment. Your tribe of characters couldn’t be more clever or less qualified, but you continue to inspire and that’s saying a lot. Thanks again for bringing us along.
Shout out to the agent at around 31 minutes - referring to Craftsman as the "classic long con", and the bent piece of bar pumping the jack as "very ergonomic". Subtle straight faced humor man nice job
Enrique Lopez Agent 223 always cracks me up! 😁
Waited all week for this! I hope the sharing of stories such as this on youtube brings more old cars back!
You guys have too much fun. It's great that you have so many friends willing to come over and drink your beer, and work on old cars.
At least they are not at the pub paying for over priced beer and doing nothing except getting into fights
That's what I do load up the fridge and party all night and work on cars
Hi guys. Yeah man!!
Scott, I told you about a year and a half ago that I was trying to revive a 1948 Plymouth P-15 that I have owned since 1976. It had been hibernating for over 35 years the engine and a valve were stuck! You have been a great inspiration and he is back on the road. It is not as easy as you make it look! Keep up the good work and the educational and motivating videos. With Great appreciation and respect, Agent P-15
I wouldn't want to do that work anymore, but I sure like watching you guys do it. This is great!!
Cursive Packard on the bottom of the valve! That’s how proud of their product they were back in the day.
that's how everything in America was proud and built here...goddam everyone after kennedy giving it all away
I love to see the Straight 8 serie’s. I don’t care if the cars (posibly) won’t run. What is nicer than working on old cars with your frends.
I think both cars will spin like a kitten after everything is clean’t and fixed 👌
Fantastic video. I love both of these cars, but that Buick waterfall grille is amazing.
The Buick "hydraulic unlocker" is a brilliant bit of on-the-spot design and fabrication! Can't wait for part 3!
Ok! Time for Part 2 of the Straight-8-Showdown! Team Packard is getting in deeper to try to free up the valves in their engine, and Team Buick is hoping to just get theirs to move at all! I was a little nervous about doing this series, as I really have no idea if either car can ever be made to run again. They have been sitting in fields for 50 years or so, and both engines are seized up, so there will definitely be some luck involved, and likely a little penetrating oil, haha! Agent 303 is the Captain of the Packard Team, and the twin Agents 7678 and 0826 of the Center For Cultural Enrichment are Co-Captaining the Buick Team. Agent 900 and I are on both teams, to keep it fair...
Please hit the ol' "like" button if you want more "Showdown" vids, ( It really helps the vids get seen) cheers!**

Hope you get a million views i got too see dean race lol really i just want too see him get high and talk about how hes going too win lol
Subbed. Cool series, I’m enjoying the cars and the play by play getting them going again. Cheers gents keep hammering away!
Man great episode I could not pull myself away only wish it was longer it was just getting good and then cut off gotta wait till next week LOL!! anyways great stuff man I wanna see that Packard Rock & Roll
Wow, clever way of getting both cars running again. Interesting to see both cars driving again. Good luck
Ol' Exner rang me up last night to see how things are going.
Sez he rests much better now since he has come to knowing
That Fury ain't just lying there in all that shit and crud...
A few more years of that bullshit he'd just be rusty mud.
He sez as well it ain't so bad if both them eights don't fire.
It's just a walk to win this race to which we might aspire.
Before he faded back to dust and customary chill,
Sez if these turds had hemi eights they'd both be running still.
The Unknown Poet (still ain't picking a winner)
Editor's Note: I think Ol' Exner is going to put a curse on somebody if that Fury don't hit the street pretty damn quick. I ain't seen the boy so excited since Viveka Babajee took the dirt nap back in 2010 and Exner headed up the welcoming committee.
Another awesome video from coldwarmotors! Your persistence and the fun you have while doing it is priceless!
Once again it's just a front to back cascade of hilarity, best show on you tube with no arguments.
Enjoying this show very much. It reminds me of when I was a kid my brother and me would go over to my cuisines, we would hang out with him and his car guys friends in his garage. Same cars just a different time...........Bring back such a good time in my life. Thanks
As always an entertaining look at the serious work of trying to free up old engines and get them to work. Patent that piston un sticking tool! That was a great idea. Can't wait for the next video.
Lucky guy to have such good friends!!! Damn funny too!!
Wow - best episode yet - this “competition” is so much fun.
This is one of the most entertaining series I have watched. The creativity, and interaction between the teams is hilarious. Makes me want to find an old Packard with a seized engine.
I don’t know how you don’t have 100k subscribers and get a million views already. This is far and away the best most honest car channel on RUclips. Talking about buying gaskets why? you gotta save all your old smokes for my classic dart episodes now?
Back decades ago the good old boys down in Mississippi would race on the back roads. One old boy was a firm believer in Packard Engines and Studebaker bodies. By the way the US PT boats used in WWII were powered by 3 Packard V-12s rated at 1200HP each driving twin screws. Now think about the knuckles and diff.s to make that work. Love the show, keep it up.
Right! The US PTs engines! great memory, Kudos!
The PT boats had plywood hulls and a lot of them were built in Pittsburgh. If I remember the story right, the one MacArthur had to bug out of Manila on had the Packard V-12 and it had a bad cylinder.
I don't doubt it. The fuel from what I have read was contaminated with parafin that clogged the furl filters regularly.
@@Fubarfighter There were two major producers of the PT boats, Elco and Higgins. Elco was based out of Bayonne New Jersey and Higgins was based out of New Orleans. They were all powered by Packard V-12s that were almost always breaking down and ran on TERRIBLE fuel in those days and yes, paraffin was very prevalent in the fuel, so it was always clogging the fuel filters and gumming up the jets in the carburetors. The Packard engines were the 3M-2500, 4M-2500, and the later 5M-2500 which were supercharged, intercooled, each had dual magnetos, and two spark plugs per cylinder to increase the amount of spark. The 3M-2500 and 4M-2500 produced 1200HP each but were later increased in stages to make 1500HP producing a top speed of 41 knots while the 5M-2500 had a larger supercharger and after cooler which increased it's output to 1850HP, enough to drive the PTs to a top speed of 45-50 knots across the water. The PTs carried 3000 US Gallon fuel tanks as the engines consumed 200 US Gallons per hour at a cruising speed of 23 knots and up to 500 US Gallons per hour at top speed. Believe me, I'm no expert on PT boats, but I did remember that during WWII there were two major producers and their names, but Wikipedia provided the rest of this information. I just figured that I would let y'all know the facts on them.
They've got one on lake Ponchra, er, Ponntra, er, Ponkratrainerpuddle down there ar the WWII museum. My brother and I saw it in restoration up on stilts in the shop about 5 yrs ago. Over in a corner, two guys were laughing their asses off, testing the tiny toilet from the boat on a bench by flushing peeled bananas.
Oh god, “Concours d’Elephants” will have me chuckling all day. Thanks.
Little better than halfway and I'm going for the gold! Dean is wasted enough to win!
On the Buick, the rings on the stuck piston might be bad, but she will run on seven and hopefully pick up on that cyl. under throttle. Im thinking she will beat the packard on 7 1/2 cylinders. What an awsome show! Thanks to Everyone at CWMC! You guys are awsome!! Rev.
I've been eager to see your progress. Both cars are clearly worth your time and effort. Great choices...
At 33:31 you can see the breaker bar move clockwise a bit when the piston finally breaks free. Whoever came up with the idea of using hydraulic pressure to break loose a frozen engine is one smart creative person. I love the way you all solve the problems of getting these engines up and running again.
Once again you guys prove why this is the best car show on RUclips or anywhere else for that matter.
Funny “O” ring segment at the end. Your friends seem like good guys. Thanks for keeping these entertaining videos coming.
The hydro unlocker is a fantastic piece of kit! Very impressive, this upload...
That blank canvas of a van is screaming for an airbrushed sorcerer or Albertan Balrog... Truly a treat this special series
I love this post ! When I was 12 (1965) my dad left/had 3 junked straight 8's he had ran into the ground. In the 1940's and 50's my dad bought used cars and liked and trusted the straight 8 engine the most. He always bragged they were the best and V8's were ''tinny and cheap''. The oldest junked car was a 38 Buick Special, 2 door. The two others were a Pontiac circa 1952 and a 1950 4 dr. Buick. I can still remember the old car smell, spiders, a snake, mice and a wasp nest etc.. So for six years, in Warren N.J. , I took the straight 8's apart. The Packard you guys are doing, reminds me very much of dad's Pontiac, a flat head . My dad never did oil changes , claimed it was a gimmick the oil companies used. So he changed the filter about once a year and added cheap Sears & Roebuck bulk oil. No wonder the straight 8's he owned eventually over heated and froze. My old man was rite, about the fact, you can un-freeze them and get them to run, he was too lazy and always bought another used giant U.S.A. made car. I never succeeded, I was too young and got too many parts out of order and confused., but I learned a lot and later in life a age 30 became an A& E mechanic. So if you can find a TV show called ''the Wonder Years'' on youtube,, very similar to my life.
Such a great time....I can't wait for Part 3!
This is a clever approach to persuade the agents into working on your old heaps.... I use that term with affection.
Sounds sweet ! Shades of the 70’s !!
We, the unwashed sit on the edges of toilet seats everywhere, knowing that, given the lag time inherent in the editing process, the agents already know the outcome of The Great Eightball Race. We truly appreciate the effort you put into post-producing these wonderful vids, Scott, but even more the willingness to add the distraction of the camera to the fun times so we can be part of it. Every fake reality show with trumped up arguments can go eff itself. This is how it's done.
This is one of your best storylines, yet. It's M.A.S.H. for old iron, with Hawkeye and BJ clones competing on adjacent operating tables. And then there's Dean--- A mashup of Radar and sunshine in a Packard sausage case. Brilliant!
Best 'Real' reality car show on RUclips!
This is a whole new level of CWM production quality!👍🏻🙂
Dean Steels the show again always a hoot you will be starting them in no time. Beers and mates having a laugh
and talking shit and having fun that's always Great time. Look forward to next weeks part 3 .
Another EXCELLENT video! I once unstuck a piston on a 1910's era Fairbanks Morse "headless" engine using the hydraulic grease gun trick. That first "tink!" noise was so satisfying, yet it was so scary at the same time! However in my case, the rod was already disconnected from the crank, so no worries about a bent rod in my case. :) And it's good to see Dean again - he loves everything! :)
Its not new technique
I can't seem to sum it up in one word so I'll use many... funny, intelligent and great to watch. Soon you'll be making the compilation music cd and dvd of Coldwarmotors. Looking forward as usual to the next installment. Thanks for making us laugh Scott!!!
Watched this episode once on the big TV then again on the iPad so I could hit the like button. Thanks guys awesome watch 👍
Wow I have never seen anybody use this technique to break an engine free before! I really am amazed!
Awesome episode and really dug the Cosmic Blues van of choice!
Greatest thing you can hear is that “Click” a bearing or a shaft and in this case a cylinder. Good job guys.
Checked first thing this morning, was looking for my friends from the north at CWM. Go Team Packard.☮️👍👍
Oh no! Waiting for another episode! This is cruel and unusual punishment :-)) You guys! Cheers.
Scott! Thanks for including us in the fun!! Love you man.
Regular folks: The engine is seized and the car hasn't run in over 40 years.
CWM: It'll start, hey? We need mosquito coils, beer, weed, and a shitload of hydraulic pressure.
Jim is a classic. “It’s like having one of your legs out of your pants and trying to pull them up”. Hilarious. Thought the hydraulic solution was very clever too.
This is beyond entertaining and cool. I live literally just down the highway from the original massive Packard plant in Detroit....it shut down back in '58 and has been in a state of decay ever since. As I'm watching this l keep thinking how surreal it would be if you were filming this job inside the archeological ruins of the crumbling plant, on the still intact assembly line.
I can't add anything that hasn't already been said, so Ill just say "Thanks, Scott, for doing what you do and putting in the time and effort to share it with us".
The same old shit just keeps getting better and better. I'll bet that there are about 30K people that wish they lived in Alberta, LOL.
I'm sitting here watching this after a long day, sipping vodka from my Same Old Shit coffee mug and pondering where to display a couple of CWM stickers. Life could be a lot worse. Cheers!
Great part 2 Scott. Awesome engineering on getting that piston to move. Got really excited to see the capri cameo toward the end, those were one of my favorite cars when I was a kid in the 70s. Can't wait for part 3. Peace out my friend.
See ya frankers. 😎
Great work and educational to boot!
“You’re never too old to be ten”... and that early 70s econo van made my night. Scott and I are the same vintage so I feel we’ve been on similar parallels with what our auto experiences growing up were. I was rural B.C. farm kid surrounded by rusty iron relics and wheels for brains! Love the nostalgia/ heroin effect. Thanks again.
Best series ever! Nothing cooler than a straight 8.
Well here I am again watching my favorite straight 8 showdown that I have been watching once a year since it's one of the greatest series on RUclips so here I am sept 8th of 2021 watching it again
Rooting for Team Packard too, excited about seeing this notification come up on my phone! Also, excited to see any Fury updates AND Model T updates! Best to you Scott and all the agents, makes my weekend seeing a new Cold War video! Would still love to see Dean own the 59 Chrysler too!!
Good evening from Nova Scotia, look forward to all the projects really enjoy your channel keep up the great work!
@Coldwarmotors, I would highly recommend pulling that piston and make sure the rings aren't stuck. I un-seized an engine on a 57 Plymouth but it was still tight as hell. Turns out the rings were seized to the piston.
If you're dog loves him, that's a good character reference.
Man I wish I had one of these beasts straight eights are definitely in the running for my favorite classic engine ever
Hope you get the million views so we can see those two old beaters race. That Budweiser mosquito coil should be in every shade tree mechanic's tool box for summers in Canada.
What an ingenious way to unstick and engine. Only you, Scott would think of a way. A lot of work but it shows what you can do if you put your mind to it. I guess after a few beers and a little weed it was fun too.
I can hardly wait for part 3.
Fantastic fun......and beer!
The rain shot is brilliant. You guys crack me up.
Good work as usual... The van is really cool with Cragar and side pipe that sound good. You seems to all have cool car. Have a good one... Cheer!
Wow what a great video guys it looks like the Buick is going to make it you guys are awesome forget about watching cable TV we just need to watch Cold War Motors on RUclips you guys are the best mechanics on the planet God bless
Nice save on the Buick ! I am really looking forward to hear and see it run ! I like the Buick , nice hardtop !
OMG i had to come back and watch it a seond time just to laught at Deans "what you gonna do" what a riot!! 😂😂😂
Scott more please! I need to see that Packard engine move freely. That hydraulic rig is awesome.
My wife thinks I am crazy, laughing at this vidéo, you guys are hilarious while consumming Budweiser, Keep it up ! Robert, Cowansville, Quebec
Love this little friendly competition! I always enjoy your videos.
Always a highlight of my weekends. All the best from your southern neighbors!
You guys are f,n hilarious!!!!!
Best series so far.
I’m really enjoying watching this and that van sounds awesome!
Happy I found your station ..team captain looks like he's having to many drinks 😄
Part of your problem with the Buick was from trying to break it loose from the front of the crank. The other 7 cylinders and valve train acts like a shock absorber. You think you're putting a lot of pressure on the stuck piston but you're not. Gotta go at it from the back of the crank for pistons stuck at the rear.
Great stuff guys. Working hard on maintaining men's mental health ;-)
Been a mixed day not feeling the best, then CWM post a new video. Great, so much fun and entertainment. Loved the hydraulic piston freeing device needs to be patented. Lovely to see Frankers and her best mate the irrepressible Dean. Well I'm feeling so much brighter now. Loving the Packard quality, no wonder Rolls let them build Merlin engines. Best wishes to both teams keep the fun coming
I have just watched the latest instalment in this riveting series, should have saved them up to binge watch.
I can hardly wait for the next episode!
I'm hoping for the million let's get a race REALLY GOOD SHIT right there Have a great day
Haha! Dean brings the belly laugh right out of me
Dean's going to put C$100 in on the Packard? Well, that'll stop him buying another '70s grandma Ford for a week or so...
love your video's, can't wait for the next episode!
greetings from the Netherlands ;)
The grill on the 50 Buick is called a Waterfall grill. ❤ Go team Buick 😂 Love watching from Socal CA.
That Ford van is Awsome 👍
Enjoyed the video Scott ! Thank you
Good one guys. Hope the cylinder comes totally free. Nice hydraulic jig design.
again, great fun! thoroughly entertaining to watch you guys heap massive amounts of thoroughly undeserved approbation upon your beaters and reveling in the counter-culture vibe. the mosquito coil? nice. :)
I'm having a great time watching ! Thanks
As Mr. Spock would say: Fascinating! The fabrication and use of that hydraulic plate was amazing! And no gasket between the plate and the engine block?
I’m sure glad that I’m on Team Buick!
Super Het There was a large O ring that served as gasket.
@Reece. Yes, somehow I missed that in all the excitement. ;-)
We had a 1950 Packard with an Ultramatic. The guy we sold it to flushed out the tranny, but didn't clean the filter, and a bunch of crud came lose and destroyed the torque convertor.
There, you've been warned ;)
I would love to work n play with these guys....I thought you were going to push that crank out the bottom but WTG..love it!!
This is the best so far Scott, the potential both of these cars have is great they are both really iconic, plus you have dean there to help keep the bugs away.
Great job on getting the Buick Eight freed up. I have spark plugs that I broke the porcelain out, and welded in a grease fitting. I. pack as much grease into the cylinder as I can, then put the head on with the old gasket, valves closed, I pump in grease using a regular grease gun. I have always got a stuck engine free that way. Looking forward to seeing both cars drive around the yard. I really like the Packard, so I hope it wins.... but it will be awesome to see both cars running! Thanks for the amazing videos. I NEVER skip threw your videos. How is the 60 Fury coming along?
I love the Jim Leahy reference.
