Will they Run? Straight-8 Showdown! Packard vs Buick, Part 4...

  • Hi! As promised, it's time for Straight-8 Showdown! In Part Four we'll start turning things around with full valve and seat grinds for each engine. These are dinosaurs from the age of the extinction of the in-line 8 cylinder configuration; both the Packard and Buick types would be gone by 1955, so I thought we should see if they could be made to run again...
The "rules" are: 2 teams, every Agent is on one team or the other. No time limit, no real budget other than for gaskets or small items. The goal is to get your team's Straight-8 machine to the end of the yard and back under its own steam. In the event it is close, there will be a "Concours d'Elephants" to determine the victor...
Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our channel here, and thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments! We do appreciate that anyone would take the time to leave us a note. If you would like to help keep our channel going, you can get a sticker or a hat or a coffee mug at:

Ok! Time for Part 4 of the Buick / Packard Straight-8-Showdown! Sorry this is a bit late; the video somehow took almost 12 hours to upload! This week we'll start turning things around as we get the valves and seats of each engine back into shape with some classic tools to help us along...The Packard's starter also gets some attention this week, and we'll spin it up to see how it goes! We're really having fun now, and things are looking up for both of these old engines...
I was a little nervous about doing this series, as I really have no idea if either car can ever be made to run again. They have been sitting in fields for 50 years or so, and both engines are seized up, so there will definitely be some luck involved, and likely a little penetrating oil, haha! Agent 303 is the Captain of the Packard Team, and the twin Agents 7678 and 0826 of the Center For Cultural Enrichment are Co-Captaining the Buick Team. Agent 900 and I are on both teams, to keep it fair...
Please hit the ol' "like" button if you want more "Showdown" vids, ( It really helps the vids get seen) cheers!**
If you'd like to support our show, please visit our website at:
www.coldwarmotors.com for Coffee Mugs, Dealership Decals, and Hats... "My Classic Tire" shirts coming soon!
or join us on the Patreon page at:
www.patreon.com/coldwarmotors and we'll hang out and talk about cars a lot, haha!
All the support is so appreciated, and this channel could not exist without the people who keep it on the air... You guys are the best!
All the very best to everyone from me and Frankers and the Agents!

Coldwar motors: Question, being these engines are that old do you run a lead additive to compensate for not having "LEADED FUEL" anymore? I'd think so since because of not having hardened valve seats. Anyway nice build and have a gr8 God blessed day.

Having worked on straight 8's ,,50+ years ago, this is great memory lane for me ! Today, I am plagued with MS and confined to a wheelchair. You guys are doing more good than you know by posting this ! I worked on the last of the Buick straight 8's in the late 1960's and early 70's. Our older neighbors and my dad's friends kept some of their old cars and were glad to have me keep them running for them. To this day , I still enjoy seeing a 25 to 35 year old car that is still on the road and being used.

Tip on the valve grinder that goes too fast: Any corded tool/AC motor (except synchronous motors) can have its speed controlled with a device called variac. A variac controls the AC input voltage to another device.
I once couldn't get a new relay for my car (needed it to turn the high beams off) so I opened the relay, drilled out the rivet that holds the coil, tediously unwound the coil by hand (the open was near the core of the winding), then not wanting to spend 4 hours rewinding it by hand I chucked the coil-form's core into the corded drill...I plugged the drill into my variac and turned up the voltage to the drill till it was moving just fast enough that I didn't lose good control of the winding process. I reassembled the relay (used a big solder blob to replace the drilled off end of the core rivet), installed it and almost 5 years later it is still working good (knock on wood).

I'm on the edge of my frickin' seat over here! Not another week before I find out how it all unfolds, my head will explode! I have not so fond memories of indentured servitude in my old man's small engine shop, grinding away at Briggs and Stratton and Tecumseh valves, spitting on the suction cup, and using a hand cranked jobby that went "pocketa-pocketa-pocketa." This looks way more fun.

As a boy, when I saw the Sioux Tool factory I knew we were almost to Grandma and Grandpa’s house! I think I always secretly wondered why Grandpa did not work there. He was a very fine blacksmith and a perfectionist. His last car was a ‘49 Packard with the straight 8. Massive torque! I know he knew about automotive maintenance and repair, too.

That old Packard motor is probably a high nickel or chrome alloy cast iron, which is why it was so easy to clean off the rust in the ports, etc.
By the 70s Detroit was lowering their nickel and/or chrome content in their castings, which manifested it easily rusted coolant passages. Once they rusted, it was hard to clear them, even with a hot tanking.
    Go, Packard!

Being an old Packard man I must say that it warms the cockles of my heart that you're working on it, whatever the reason. The valve seat machine that many years ago you glommed onto is stupendous! I would venture to say that more than half of the current "tech" wouldn't even know what it is. I mean no one rebuilds engines while the blocks are still in the car anymore.

Part of that came about because back in 1953 parts were expensive and labor was cheap (realitively speaking) so it made sense to rebuild .
Now parts are cheap and labor isn't so it makes sense to remove and replace rather than to fix. And modern cars aren't designed like the 53 Packard Packard to be rebuilt.

With a fresh change of ATF in both the tranny and the locking torque converter, the Ultramatic should be ready to go, if only in low range. But they will run again.Reminds viewers dont let your car or truck set fir 50 years! The auto shop in high school had the same Souix valve +seat grinding machines. Ive rebuilt lots of heads, including replacing guides and seats. But never on a straight eight. Im anxious to hear them run. On overhead valve heads i use a cordless drill to lap the valves in. Instead of the suction cup hand tool. Chuck the valve stem into the drill from the back side. I really enjoy the old school mechanic stuff. Ive done a ton of it. It takes patience, time, knowledge, and talent to do quality long lasting permanent repairs. On a budget. Zero budget. Awsome. I like old OEM parts better than han new reproduction stuff. There usually better. Excellent show. Nobody does this stuff anymore. Take it to the machine shop or buy a new head. Thats why the revvedupyooper loves this SAME OLD SHIT!!

This series also puts my so-called feat of driving a '52 Ford V8 out of a field that had been sitting "forever" in clearer perspective. It had been sitting for what, at the time, was my entire lifetime, 15 years, not 50. I didn't have to do much other than free it up (didn't have to build a hydraulic piston crusher), plunk the wrong sized tires on it, make a set of cardboard carb gaskets, balance a lawn mower tank on the hood, battery, points, rotor, plugs, and go. 50 years of sitting does some pretty epic damage!
