Will they Run? Straight-8 Showdown! Packard vs Buick, Part1

  • Hi! As promised, it's time for Straight-8 Showdown! In Part one we'll take our classic boat anchors, I mean engines, apart and see what it is going to take to get them going again! These are dinosaurs from the age of the extinction of the in-line 8 cylinder configuration; both the Packard and Buick types would be gone by 1955, so I thought we should see if they could be made to run again...
The "rules" are: 2 teams, every Agent is on one team or the other. No time limit, no real budget other than for gaskets or small items. The goal is to get your team's Straight-8 machine to the end of the yard and back under its own steam. In the event it is close, there will be a "Concours d'Elephants" to determine the victor...
Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our channel here, and thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments! We do appreciate that anyone would take the time to leave us a note. If you would like to help keep our channel going, you can get a sticker or a hat or a coffee mug at:

I'm very excited to finally be making the Straight-8 Showdown!
We've talked about this idea for a while, but now it is time to get going on these classic behemoths! In one corner, we have the 1953 Packard Clipper, and in the other corner it's the 1950 Buick Super Riviera Hardtop... This week, we'll start by taking the engines apart a bit to see what kind of condition they are in, and whether they can even be saved... I was a little nervous about doing this series, as I really have no idea if either car can ever be made to run again. They have been sitting in fields for 50 years or so, and both engines are seized up, so there will definitely be some luck involved, and likely a little penetrating oil, haha! Agent 303 is the Captain of the Packard Team, and the twin Agents 7678 and 0826 of the Center For Cultural Enrichment are Co-Captaining the Buick Team. Agent 900 and I are on both teams, to keep it fair...
Please hit the ol' "like" button if you want more "Showdown" vids, ( It really helps the vids get seen) cheers!**
If you'd like to support our show, please visit our website at:
www.coldwarmotors.com for Coffee Mugs, Dealership Decals, and Hats... "My Classic Tire" shirts coming soon!
or join us on the Patreon page at:
www.patreon.com/coldwarmotors and we'll hang out and talk about cars a lot, haha!
All the support is so appreciated, and this channel could not exist without the people who keep it on the air... You guys are the best!
All the very best to everyone from me and Frankers and the Agents!

This was a really good episode, from about 5 minutes in I started watching the red line I didn't want it to end. Can't wait for the next episode. I think im team buick. I think it would be better for everyone if you got 2 cameras going and filmed each team independently and uploaded them both separately so we have more content to watch. Go buick you can do it

What could be better viewing, a group of mostly middle-aged fellers having huge amounts of fun (and beer) fixing rusty old cars---and not a toupee in sight ! If I was American, I would undoubtably say "Awsome!!!", but I'm just an old Yorkshire "Geezer" in Ireland saying "That's absolutely hilarious".Thanks for sharing, Scott.

I used to work with an older mechanic when i first started my apprenticeship back in 84. We did a couple of old flat head motors where we reused copper head gaskets. we took them off, cleaned the gasket and painted them with galvanized roof paint and put them back on. They worked. At the time i didn't think it would but it did.

Hi Andrew. Yes, ive reused copper head gaskets many times, never once did it not work. My first experience was 12 yrs old, mini bike 5hp tecumseh transplant, blew headgasket. I made one out of a copper kettle sheeting from the sides of kettle. Worked great. I removed the head, asked my dad to buy me a new gasket, old won was blown right out. He went in the shed, came out with old copper kettle, thrwe it at me, and said," make one!" I did! It worked great! Rev.

  • @jlich001
    @jlich001 5 лет назад +4

What I love is that RUclips tries constantly to recommend other videos to me based on my affinity for this channel: "Watched another Cold War Motors video? You'll love this!" Well, I am here to say nothing else on the whole of RUclips holds a candle (or a neon carburetor lamp) to the fun and games broadcast weekly from the CWM Olympic Time-Wasting Complex and Velodrome. Hats off to Scott, Frankers, and all the Agents for their continued efforts to bring us the genuine article. And so, RUclips, I'm going to watch Part I of the Straight-8 Showdown again, because I will accept no substitute for CWM with my coffee.

Penetrating beer down that #8 cylinder is what you need. 10% of the mix down the bore- it will either free the piston or it won't, but as you'll be drinking the remaining 90%, you won't care either way. Win/win.

Ever since I watched a few of the Jay Lenno Packard car reviews now they will always be remembered as one of the highest quality classic cars ever made. Just ask the man who owns one. In one of the old manuals Jay has it says to "Have your man" change the oil and do services etc, because back then if you could afford a Packard you definitely had a guy that did the work for you.
Look at that cylinder head. Such nice machine work. Love the lettering. THUNDERBOLT

The largest models of Packard, Pierce Arrow, Cadillac, Rolls Royce etc were made to be chauffeur driven. Giant trucklike limousine type cars that could carry the heaviest most luxurious body work. They also made smaller, handier cars for the owner who drove his own car and these made up 80% or 90% of their production. That is where the 'have your man' stuff came from, the chauffeur driven models.

Great, creative concept for a video. Broad, team-member involvement (Agents with agency), two diverse mystery engines (or chancy bores), amicable competition, beer, seasoned & satirical expectations, happy rust vs. pathological saboteur rust . . . what's not to like? Perhaps we'll see the Packard dragging the Buick until its crank finally spins . . . or the input shaft pinballs off, smoking, into the woods like a singed chipmunk?

Our family had a 1950 Buick Special when we lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa. In late 1971 my dad sold the car to a local guy . We all missed it. Such a fun big old car. And green, just like this one.

Hey Philip! Thanks for the note... Hope you enjoy this one... I also hope that it works out, haha! I really have no idea how this is going to turn out, as I decided to do this series before we even tried to turn either engine or take a single bolt off... There might be some "technical difficulties" along the way, haha! Cheers, and thank you again for all your generosity to the cause here. All the very best from me and Miss Frankers...

Awesome Scott, I felt like I was there with the boys doing 'grandpa stuff'. I love how as the day goes on and the more beer is consumed, the comments everyone makes just get smarter.

I've been eagerly anticipating since the day you bought the Packard and the Buick that there would be a Will It Run for the seized engines. I already know this series will be my favorite -- and hell, I already love all the other Will It Run episodes.

I think the Buick team will need a few extra beers to get that thing going! I'm looking forward to the Packard running. I've never heard what a straight eight Packard sounds like.

Can’t wait for the sequel. Will it run is really a great watch. Go Team Buick go! Can you drop the sump and take off the con rod of no.8 and knock piston through and get another piston?

Winners drink Molson Canadian. Losers drink Big Rock Jackrabbit Low Carb Lager. Just beat a crease in the copper gasket and let it crush seal when it is tightened again? Tom seems one of those cheerful guys that it is always a pleasure to be around. I love grumpy old farts. Those are the ones you learn the real life lessons from.

I knew we weren’t going to see em running when the rumors about no more 🍺 started flying. That will do it every time. Time to re-group , make a beer run , twist one ( or three) up and figure out the plan of attack to get these two cars running 🍺✌️

That was great! Really looking forward to more of this series. I'm betting team Packard is gonna win, just because those old flatheads are dead simple and damn near impossible to kill. The OHV engine in the Buick has more moving parts -- more to go wrong. Awesome video!

Hang a chain up under the front of the Buick, drag it up the road & let the clutch out...if the clutch is stuck, put the transmission in neutral then try whatever gear you think will match wheel rpm in a timed agresssive fashion...it'll let go - l've done this before...put 2 people in the pull vehicle - 1 driving looking forward & 1 turned around looking at you
