My grandmother retired from Carter Carburetor in St. Louis, MO in 1970 after working there 25 years. In all those years she rode the bus to work and never missed a day or was late. She was a pretty tough ole broad and could have rebuilt your Packard carburetor blindfolded with both hands tied behind her back lol. I wish she were still with us.

In the mid 1980s, my vocational high school auto mechanics class took a field trip tour of the Carter Carburetor plant while they were closing it down, and moving the machinery out. All cars will soon be throttle body or fuel injected in a few years, they told us.
The buildings stood empty for decades, and I was able to tour them again years later.
But they're all gone now, and nothing remains there but a huge, empty vacant lot.

Well what could go wrong, after all both cars have been sitting for 40 or 50 years and the Buick had a piston that had to be beaten out in pieces and you had to put Ford 239 flathead rings on a Buick piston and you had to repair a cylinder head gasket that was probably the reason the Packard was parked just a half century ago because you couldn't get a new gasket. After all if you can rebuild the Plymouth found rotted away in a horse lot these two cars are a walk in the park. If it weren't coldwarmotors there might be a problem but after watching you for a few years I have come to expect the impossible. Simply amazing as always.

Ok! Time for Part 5 of the Buick / Packard Straight-8-Showdown! Sorry this is a bit late; the video somehow took almost 12 hours to upload! This week Packard team has a few problems to get around if they are gonna try to fire that big flathead! And, as for Buick Team, well, things are not looking good as the Packard guys look to be pulling so far ahead that it will be impossible to catch up... So many parts are missing or beyond repair that they are gonna need some serious good luck if they are not gonna get steamrolled by the Packard juggernaut...
Packard Team Captain Agent 303 had to visit family out of town this week, but Agent 7899 stepped up and proved more than equal to the job! Well done, sir. All the Buick team pulled together to get the remains of their seriously wrecked engine cleaned up, and now we'll see if it was all for nothing, or?
I was a little nervous about doing this series, as I really have no idea if either car can ever be made to run again. They have been sitting in fields for 50 years or so, and both engines are seized up, so there will definitely be some luck involved, and likely a little penetrating oil, haha! Agent 303 is the Captain of the Packard Team, and the twin Agents 7678 and 0826 of the Center For Cultural Enrichment are Co-Captaining the Buick Team. Agent 900 and I are on both teams, to keep it fair...

People forget how fast cars used to wear out. All those brake drums and valve seats and starter motors were made to be repaired. They taught classes in how to do it. I learned how to run the valve grinder in VOTECH before I got my license. Auto and Ag shop classes were the best education I ever received.

I'm right there with you, buddy. I learned how to grind valves, cut valve seats, set up distributors on the machine, rebuild starters and alternators, etc. in 1974-75 at a local Vocational school.
However, In 25 years as an Automotive Tech, I never had the opportunity to do any of those things as part of my job. Those were dying skills even then.
I've since moved on to another career, but I'm quite jealous that Scott has a Distributor tester, Valve Grinder, Seat grinder and other cool old school equipment.

Wow I can't believe the progress on those things. Especially the Buick. Proof that if you're stubborn enough, have enough beers and pizza, mosquito coils, darts, and a few specialty tools you can un-shit almost anything. I mean when it gets down to it aside from the new piston and rings for the Buick most everything was just a disassemble (sometimes aggressively), some degree of tidy or rebuild with little or no parts replacement. And then put back together. I'm incredibly amazed at what you've done. now to see if you can whistle in some radiators and sort out those transmissions. Excellent work, Scott and Agents.
Funny anecdote about the shitty paint mixing screwdriver. The first tool I was ever given by my dad. I don't remember how old I was but I was younger than 13 for sure because it was before we moved the first time. I needed a philips screwdriver so I found one in his tool box. It was a #1 Philips made by Craftsman. The thing had been used to stir MANY cans of paint. The shank was about as big around as my pinky it was so thick with dried paint of many colors. Dad cut the paint off of the tip, mostly, and I used it. He then said I could keep that one if I wanted to since he had plenty of them. That was going on 26+ years ago now. That screwdriver has built every computer i've ever assembled, and been used for every single task that a philips of such size would suffice for. I just walked across the room and fetched it to get the markings off of it so I could write this post with the actual #'s. I don't have many tools that I wouldn't allow somebody to borrow even for just a few minutes but that is one of them (the rest of them were also gifts from Dad. He has been gone for almost 2 years now. I think about and miss him every day but in addition to those times I always think about him when I reach for that screwdriver.

I absolutely love this series of real mechanics. My very first automobile, a 1952 Buick super 2 door hardtop, dynaflow, at the age of 12. Didn’t run but it purred later. My granddad was a airplane mechanic during ww2, in my eyes he could fix anything without a parts store, so a little assistance from time to time was needed. Thanks!

You guys so should have your own TV series. Another great vid. I love that '50 Buick. My father had a green Super sedan. He always talks about how great a car it was. The front end just screams "'50's yank tank" and I mean that as a love letter!

I was so waiting last week and as cool as the bikes were it was letdown not to see more straight-8-showdown and then when I got home tonight I got online and there it was a new packard vs buick vid and better than I expected. I loved when the gasket crisis and Scott's time is money and Steven's and we got neither sums up the coldwarmotor credo for most projects, then Scott made it work as usual. Then with team buick Jim saves the day with Ford piston rings that Scott makes fit and then hearing them both run was awesome, the only thing missing was Dean with his attentive tidying and team spirit, I hope all went well for him. You guys really show putting your heads together really works and I wish I was there for the fun.

This is the greatest series ever shown yet on youtube! It really should be put on T.V.! Well, I started out thinking the Buick had the edge with its overhead valves, and now that i see it is running, and also now that I hear the Packard is automatic transmission, I am beginning to lean back toward team Buick!

Straight eight ignition! That head gasket clean up was well done. I remember as a kid I watched my old man replace a head gasket on his six cylinder Holden in the front yard in the early 1970s. People used to do a lot themselves. You guys are revisiting frontier mechanics and it’s a pleasure to watch. Great video!

Scott,it is amazing what you can do with what you got! The improvising of parts..fixing and reusing of gaskets, accelerator pump, lifters with rust holes! (Extra lube!)
Both of the engines sound great! Now we need to see them move!
Thanks for the videos! And proving that you always don't need new parts to make engines run!
