  • Learn about the latest eye drop recall by the US FDA and some useful resources to help check if your eye drops are safe!
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has faced a series of eye drop recalls that have been shocking the healthcare industry. Earlier in the year, a number of eye drops were linked to severe infections, leading to devastating cases of blindness and worse.
Unfortunately, a new recall was just released on October 27th, 2023, and now an update came out on October 30th.
This includes generic or store brand eye drops from
    CVS Health
    Leader (Cardinal Health)
    Rugby (Cardinal Health)
    Rite Aid
    Target Up & Up
    Velocity Pharma
    Walmart

This is absolutely awful! I use eye drops regularly for dry eyes, fortunately I don't see Systane eye drops on the lists. Still, I feel terrible for the people that have lost their vision to this and for the people that have died, this NEVER should have happened, I hope the families sue for millions.

Hi Dr. Allan...thank you for this important video. As an optician here in NY I am frequently asked about using eyedrops. I, too, use drops for dry eye. It should be incumbent upon these national chains to monitor the safety of their products and act accordingly when the FDA finds health issues with them.

Great tip: 30 day limit and buy new. I personally prefer the individual drop packaging. I toss after each use. I prefer waste of some of the product vs contaminated the multi use container. I have a tendency to
touch some part of my eye. I’m a CPAP USER, total dry eye post sleep, in addition to being 70 and my eye lid glands have atrophied no oil production is less. Oil production is is more of a dry eye issue than simply not tearing enough. A very cutting edge eye doc discovered this issue with me. So much respect for docs that keep up with changing care. So many docs get stuck in med school learning and concentrate on raking in the income as opposed to my brilliant eye doc. Tip to help glandular oil secretion. Close your eyes through out the day and squeeze eye lids tightly. Start with ten seconds and move up to a count up squeezing eye lids 30 sec. You will feel the secretion cover your eye. Take care vision health warriors.

I see this alot with recalls. Telling people to dispose the product.
Any time there's a recall and you have any amount of the peoduct you should be returning it to the store you bought it from or contacting the customer service and getting a refund. These companies are already not doing their due diligence...don't let them walk away with your money as well.
Unless something has changed about recalled products not being refundable.

Legally they should have to give refunds. They often know that their product was unsafe and in cases of contamination, whether they knew or not, they should be doing quality control checks and ensuring that their equipment is cleaned regularly and properly. They should also be ensuring that all materials used are sanitized and handled appropriately. Technically the item is defective if it has to be recalled, and thus, they owe that money to the customers who bought said products. Big corporations get away with far too much.

I had an eye infection from this bacteria. Scared the 💩 out of me when my ophthalmologist said that he was worried about saving my eye first, eyesight later. I was doing eye drops every 15 minutes when I was awake. Needless to say, I didn't sleep much
My insurance company didn't want to refill one of the antibiotics drops (VERY expensive) because I needed the refills too soon. Dr. had to fight with insurance for the drops.
I kept my eye, and have a small scar on my cornea. Because I am extremely near sighted, I don't notice it.

We found two of the affected eye drops in his meds, and a third that was a safe brand but expired. @@mariapierce2707 When I checked the FDA website, the contaminated drops were made mostly in India and China.
I know that products made in USA may not always be perfect, but I've seen too many products (not just eye drops) from India and China especially, being recalled for contamination with bacteria, fungus, and toxic heavy metals. They don't seem to have good quality control practices.
The products are made cheaply and frequently sold in cheap stores of the Dollar-store type, so elderly and poor people are the usual victims. Small business importers just want to make fast, easy money, counting on FDA to be too understaffed to catch everything. And when a small-time operater knows they might get caught, they can disappear for a while, then keep coming back with a rebrand. Criminal and proud of it.

I had Similasan Dry Eye Relief on auto ship (via Amazon) & recently received an email from Amazon regarding a recall alert on the Similasan brand too. The preservative, it said in the FDA recall (you can search it online) is problematic.
I liked the Similasan bottle as it was very easy to administer the drops, especially when waking up; kept several bottles on my nightstand. Now, I’m using Systane PF, preservative free, which is more of a struggle to use.
Crazy that we’re supposed to toss the bottle every 30 days. Preservative free drops are expensive!

I'm so upset about this particular recall because this is a Homeopathic eye drop and I have been using this religiously for 8 years since I had Lasik surgery and it's been AMAZING. I'm freaked out because I can't find anything else that is almost identical...there's a couple of things, but there's a lot of inactive ingredients that are harmful. I just don't get what is wrong with the Similasan drops - apparently it's something to do with the silver sulfate inactive ingredient? Then why are vitamin stores and other retailers allowed to sell Colloidal Silver throat & nasal sprays? Same concept. I am convinced that because it's natural it's a target. I have never had an issue with any of the Similasan drops - I love the allergy ones too. I really hope I can find a bunch online and just order them to hold me over for a while. Any other dry eye and allergy drops you know of that are similar to this brand? I'm desperate. Thanks!

Had cataract surgery too. No the eyes continue to need supplemental lubrication especially if looking at a laptop screen(s) all day. But otherwise no complaints
I drink a lot of water but sadly it doesn't help
I suspect staring at laptop screens all day may have something to do with it.

Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning the "Magic Touch" product. I have a very hard time applying eye drops because of an aggressive blink reflex. I can only get them in my eyes by gently dropping into the lower eyelid. The Systane brand you’ve previously recommended, has a clear bottle, which I like, because you can see the amount left, and notice if the solution becomes cloudy. The problem is with the special valve tip it has, to prevent contamination. The drop comes out of the tip, then immediately runs to the edge of the bottle, dropping onto my face before it can go in my eyelid. I got the bottle to save money, and not use so much plastic packaging and wasted drops, but the bottle seemed to waste just as much.
I will definitely try the "Magic Touch" applicator with the remaining bottle of Systane I have! 😊

Something that I believe the FDA should do as well is ban those plastic single use droppers since they’re really sharp when opening (the cap tears off the droppers instead of having a typical screw on seal). Since you mentioned 70% of users accidentally touch the tip to their eyes, that’s a potential of a ton of eye damage from preventable abrasions. I learned this the hard way when I got an abrasion this exact way and had to use antibacterial ointment on my affected eye for about a week.
Also on the price of these drops need to be regulated & covered by insurance, I’ve spent a few thousand dollars already on eyedrops to deal with the side effects of laser eye corrective surgery (SMILE).

When the recalls came out and whatnot; I checked and was surprised they were made in China! I checked before I bought same type and this time;they’d moved the distribution to Belgium.

By the way - how many people keep eyedrops in the bathroom cabinet? When I started wearing contact lens over 30 years ago, my optician said not to keep eyedrops or contact lens in the bathroom - it gets warm and damp and can help the eyedrops or lens breed bugs. Store in cool dry place. Also make sure that you wash your hands properly and dry on a clean towel before handling anything where can contaminate the eyes. I have never had an eye infection.
