My ophthalmologist told me to "blink with purpose" when using electronics. I was confused at first but when I started paying attention to blinking more often and actually closing my eyes I found it helped.
Yes, AGREED! Not that hard to grasp that concept.
one thing i’ve had a hard time with is doctors telling the average person we have too much screen time. the world is screens. we work on screens. all day. there needs to be a better solution than just “reduce the amount of time you spend on essential tasks because the world is screens. “
Well said
When the PAIN of everyone reaches a threshold, they will just invent a digital SCREEN that doesn't hurt the eyes....
LITERALLY!
Like I am an engineer... we are like on the computer 70% of the time! Plus everything we do nowadays requires being on the screen
@@jeang3258 yeah…it’s just not reasonable or realistic to tell people (especially from doctors who are on screens far less) to reduce their screen time. i guess what they are saying is, find a new career? become a park ranger? or a chef? or a bus driver?
Actually we shouldn't use screens, but instead looking around the natural world
I gave up drinking alcohol 5 months ago because nothing else had worked regarding my severe dry issue. Today, they are better than they have been in years! I soooo miss the taste of wine and bourbon, but my eyes are thanking me more and more every day.
I know alcohol is tough to avoid, marketing for it is everywhere and it's such a big part of culture. But unfortunately, it is basically pure poison. Happy to hear things are getting better for you.
Yes, I find the same thing. I'm mostly tee-total these days. If I have a glass of wine, the dryness kicks in almost straight away
Alternate 16 ounces of water with each glass of wine or liquor or 12 ounces beer. It dramatically helps with dehydration caused by alcohol. And helps prevent hangovers.
Dang, I have not drank alcohol in 40 years and my eyes are terribly dry! Good for you though.
1) Electronic Gadgets
2) Wind (outside), AC, fan (inside)
3) Not cleansing eyelashes
4) using eyedrop like visine for redness, using preservatives like BAK
5) sleeping with eyes open
6) ignoring other health conditions like autoimmune diseases, diabetes, etc
Thank you!
7) Diet
So thoughtful thank you
I have health issues and have had bad eye problems forever, especially since I developed Sjogren’s.
@@steph9123That’s a biggie!
What I liked about your vid was that you got to the point without laborious back story ....there was just enough of the reasoning given and why solutions worked big thank you
One thing you haven’t mentioned is bad fitting sleep apnea masks. These can provide air flow across the eyes.
From my experience I would add those tips:
1) try to sleep 1 extra hour and focus on getting quality sleep. Ideally go sleep earlier. See if it makes your dry eyes better
2) if you work with PC, try to move it away from you so the hot air from the PC is not coming to your eyes (for example during online video calls your PC produces a lot of hot air). I just put my desktop PC on the other side of my room and use long cables
3) for me more important than omega 3 was Vitamin D3. Supplement at least 6000 IU per day for 3 months and see if it makes any difference. It helped me with inflammation and I dont get so many meibomian glands plugs anymore. You can safely go up to 10000 IU per day.
Great tips!!!
Those are some high omega 3 quantities but I have heard other reports of success with higher dosages as well.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Maybe you misread it - those dosages are for Vitamin D3, not Omega 3. A lot of people dont have enough of this very important vitamin, especially when they stay & work indoors most of the time like me.
Do you have any videos on how to get rid of BLURRY vision associated with dry eyes?
I suffer from this too. My optician gave me eyedrops for dry eyes because of my blurred vision but they haven't helped.
Best tips I've received in the 20 years I've had dry eye, thank you.
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Dr. ALLEN
Really good info! Thanks!
Thank you! Very helpful.
Thank you Dr Allen this is most useful happy holidays
Thank you, this was very helpful ❤
Thanks for the tips doc !)
Tuesday lunch time. Thank you for that excellent information ❤
You're the best Dr. Thank you
Great information and presented well. Thanks!
Guilty of many of these but glad to see stuff my eye doctor gave me this week on your websites.
Going to check out the website! Thanks for all the tips and recommendations Dr. Allen!
Thank you for very good advice. Very helpful to me.
Thanks for the info on the preservative
Thanks doctor😊
An eye mask has helped my dry eye problem so much. I had years of soreness before but do make sure you give it a wash now and then! Mine is pure silk with a silk filling but a cotton filling is good too.
Wow thank you 💕🙏
I found this video very helpfull, so thankyou
What a useful vlog.. I am in England and have seen consultants who have not given me as mum info as this. Thank you so much.
Eye lid wipes? Never knew. Thx.
5:41 Really cheeky move using that irregular, fuzzy white background here. Made me feel like I was losing my vision. Thanks.
I got the eye lid wipes and it has helped a lot. The first use made my eyelids feel clean and had a soothing feeling. I still need to get a moisturizing drop that works.
Do you get any natural tears while crying or cutting onion?
@@medhikasingh6327 no even when I try and cry. Onions have not affected me in more than 15 years and I use them a lot.
Thank you Doctor I Love yr channel 👏👏⭐️❤️👍🍀
Thank you.
Thank you so much for all of the videos that you share! They are so helpful.
I have not seen any on blocked tear ducts or oil glands and wondered if you have made any on those topics
I am most likely going to have to have surgery to have a stent placed and am trying to avoid it. I have had a swollen ulcer at the inner right eye on and off for a year and have seen multiple doctors (7) with no relief. Have you dealt with this in your practice?
Thank you again for all you do,! Wish you were closer because I would def make an appointment with you
Thank you🌷
Is there a “best choice” of active ingredients that you recommend from an eye drs point of view or experience. I need to know what to look for. I really appreciate all your tips and education and time spent helping us.
Thanks for these videos. Any hormone in particular you think affects? I have increased growth hormone and IGF1 because of a tumour on pituitary glands. Started getting eye discomfort and headaches last year. Doctors operated to remove as much and now they might do radiotherapy to get rid the remaining.
You are the best!
Best tip for blepharitis. Very hot wet cloth kept on eyes for several seconds. Wash face and eye area with Dermol cream. Daily. It’s worked for me!
Also, see if you can treat allergy issues. That made a big difference for my dry eyes, although I was skeptical it would. Hormonal changes can contribute too (thankful for HRT!).
Running a humidifier at low level overnight has helped.
Great to hear that!!
Spot on mate 👍
Thanks!
your videos are so helpful. thank you for doing this
You're so welcome! So glad you like them!
Thank you!
Always happy to help. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Hi, I first saw this channel as I was looking for the best smartphone display for my eyes and came across you Dr. Perhaps this information was on one of your videos or maybe someone asked, but I'm going to bring it up again. I'm interested in your opinion on such methods as Bates suggested, or on physical exercises for the eyes in general? I apologize in advance for the grammar, as I am using a translator.
Good presentation 👍👍
Informative video ♥
Thank you!
❤ Thank you.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊! Thanks for watching
Thank you so much Dr. Allen, I'm guilty of 3 of the subjects you mentioned. Too much screen time, not cleansing my eyelashes and ignoring my RA. My eyes are killing me, hopefully with the recommendations you add my eyes will get better.
Do you get any natural tears while crying or cutting onion?
Hey dr is there an massager you would recommend for migraines and eye strain relief? I was looking at the renpho and was wondering if you had any recommendations.
Does retinol serum causes destroying the glands if we put it under eyelids and above? Thanks
I’m curious Have you found any good peer review studies of the connection between dry eyes + hormones for women you could recommend as I’m currently working with patients with that
Adding a humidifier and using Systane has worked well for me. BecausecI have allergies I have always washed my lashes every morning and dry with fluffy tiwel. Easier than buying another special product!
Thanks for a fantastic video chock full of information and resources. On the subject of creating an inflammatory response in the body, alcohol is not the only offender. Sugar is probably the worst, which alcohol contains, but also wheat products, including...pizza! Staying away from refined carbohydrates is always a good idea. That includes pasta, bread, alcohol, sugar. So, your puffy eyes could be caused not by just the beer but the pizza. There are other reasons why typical bread products are to be avoided, especially wheat.
I love your thorough videos and down to earth approach!! Sometimes we have to be our own detectives. Had cataract surgery in February and have blepharitis 2+ years. Opthalmologist insisted on lube drop QID. The itching etc. was driving me mad. I did some research and it turns out I am extremely sensitive to povidone iodine, which is the primary ingredient in Ivizia!! Done with THAT!!!
Do you get any natural tears while crying or cutting onion?
What about an eye heat and massager? I just purchased one from Amazon. It massages the eye area and is heated. Do you recommend?
“Reach for the first eye drops you see on the shelf” is more likely “Reach for eye drops that are the most economical”!! Definately been guilty of that!!💕
Any info on MLT laser treatment (I have ocular hypertension and dry eyes) and the impact on dry eyes? I'm very interested in having this laser treatment, especially because I'm still young and can't imagine drops for the rest of my life. Also just a video on laser treatments would be awesome 😊

@@medhikasingh6327 yes, I do. how about that?
Also does using face oil for under eyes affect eye vision?
Is Acrylarm safe to use for dry eye? Thanks
An eye opening video for sure.👀
Can you please order and test eiyan lenses? They have great reviews online but I'd like your opinion.
Thx Doc for your precious tips. One question, how long can we wear soft contacts per day?
Hey thanks for asking. Soft contact lenses can usually be worn easily for 12-16 hours a day, but the longer you wear them, the more likely people will feel discomfort and dryness.
Thanks, your videos are so helpful. I’ve been on just about every prescription eye drops, not working my Doctor mentioned about a blood procedure, not sure, not sure about this?
Serum eye drops or platelet rich plasma are 2 options derived from someone's blood which have been shown to be beneficial for people with severe dry eye.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you for your reply, I hope it doesn’t come to this🙏
@@DoctorEyeHealth😅
I taped my eyes shut last night just like you did here, and I woke up feeling as though somebody had done very bad things to me in my sleep. I will repeat this tonight and hope for exactly the same outcome tomorrow 😏
His eyes are so blue. Very beautiful!
truly enjoy your informational videos… #6 @5:37 “rosacea” was misspelled…
Thank you for this here is two tips I began getting sore eyes after using those eye covers to block out light mine was cotton and over time dust mites made it there base then jumped off to my lashes little buggers also I have found how to make eyes water by practicing wide mouth yawning it works to make instant tears but takes a little practice
Why recommend eye lid wipes with retinol in it? It’s known to harm meibomian glands. The Hylawipes have retinyl palmitate in them.
What's the best for contacts?
i have a severe dry eyes its 1 year and 1 month now but its a bit better now compared to the last few months preservative free eye drops really works, vigamox, vigadexa and eye mask helps especially omega 3 and the anti biotic im taking clovir… i will buy humidifier for work because my cubicle is near aircon
Hi Dr. Allen! I have dry eyes. It's been 3 months that I use eyedrop but I still can't watch tv or can't read my books, or study etc. And I also have blepharitis and my doctor also gave me a shampoo to wash my lashes. ( i use it twice a day and it's been 3 months again) I feel soo depressed about it. Cause it's so annoying to live in such condition. Do you think I should get Omega 3 or something?
Lasik is the reason I have dry eye and other complications at times. I apreciate you making content anout dry eye. We need more good and honest doctors.

Where is the link for the eyelid tape?
Such an amazingly helpful video for my main issue - dry eyes. Appreciate these tips you have provided so much. Also as I age, I have found it more difficult to wear my gas permeable contact lenses for an extended period. I learn more from you than any other professional in your field.
Do you get any natural tears while crying or cutting onion?
Been using steam room and sauna but after use eyes turn blood red . Have dry eyes . Any advise on what I can use prior to using to prevent redness. Thaught steam room was good for dry eye.
@DoctorEyeHealth LUMIFY - yes or no?
Can i wash my eyes with water? And what kind ?
I don't drink habitually. But years ago, I had some local brewed beer, and my eyes dried out pretty quickly after dinner. I couldn't open my eyes and had to get someone to go to the drug store to get some antihistamines. But from then on, I would have some major brand beer without any problems.
Is that a reaction to a particular ingredient in the local brew or something else?
Is Xiidra good for everyone?
Hey doc! I know you have dry eyes as well, what is your TBUT and what’s the lowest it’s ever been?
mine is 4 sec
I cant find the SleepTite eyelid tape anywhere. Or any other brand.
Does anyone have any information on that? Thank you
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP ❤😊
Hey doc, could you please comment here or in future videos what temperature range "melts" the blepharitis fat build-up? I'm asking not only so I can use the proper temperature with a microwaved moist washcloth, but I'm also curious if my 145-degree sauna can do the job... THANKS!
That's a really interesting question. I've wondered the same about hot Sun on the face. Apparently 40-45celcius is the ideal temperature range for warm compresses, so your sauna theoretically should do the job..
Really good question! Publications show the temperature of the meibum melts at various ranges (the more inflamed the higher the temperature required). 40-44 degrees Celcius is often quoted as the ideal temperature for the glands but 45 degrees on the skin can potentially burn the skin.
I have never seen a study on using a sauna but myself and several other doctors believe it would help. I wish I had a sauna so I could run a study on that lol.
This was a fantastic question!
My mother had been plagued with eye pain and it’s not dry eye. She’s been to 8 eye doctors and nobody knows what wrong. She’s suffering from intense pain in her eyes.Any suggestions?
This year I was diagnosed with PVD (posterior vitreous detachment), but was told there was nothing that can be done about it. What’s your perspective?
I saw am opthamologist that told me to wait six months. I immediately saw another specialist and had a vitrectomy with great results. Get a second opinion.
Do you have a video where you speak about MKH? German opticians like to sell prism glasses for heterophoria, yet there don't seem to be many studies about it and some doctors even say that this will worsen the heterophoria. Is this true? I know it's not popular outside Germany and Austria ...
Great info Doc! Hormones, who woulda guessed! They seem to crop up with all sorts of health issues.
For sure!!
Doctor Allen, I have a question..
I take Omega 3 supplements everyday 1 capsule (300mg EPA, 1000mg DHA, 10mcg Vit D3) and the when i dint take it for like one or 2 days, my eyes starts to bother me also i feel like my nerves or my muscles can't function good..
So what is the reason?? And for how long from now should i be taking the omega3??
So when using eyelid wipes, you’re not supposed to clean the white lining of the eyelid? Just the outside skin and eyelashes?
Is benzalkonium chloride as a preservative in Tobramycin and Dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension save to use as prescribed by the eye doctor? BAK is found in almost all the eye medications. Your program is very useful and really appreciated your informations.
Dexamethasone is a steroid so for me it reduces inflammation in my eyes and reduces pain, but it can increase the eye pressure, which shouldn't be a problem with people who don't have problems with eye pressure like Glaucoma. I do have Glaucoma and still use Dexamethasone. I've always been told my my cornea doctors that Preservative Free eye drops are the best ones to use.
I had eyelash mites that migrated to my cornea and were eating it. I had no symptoms so was lucky to go to the eye doctor who detected it. She gave me an expensive tea tree oil foaming soap. After using it I started to make my own foaming soap with a tea tree oil liquid soap.
Yikes, sounds awful
Hi Doc! My doctor prescribed me Systane Complete eye drop for dry eyes but after using that for 3-4 months I was experiencing blurry vision in one of my eyes and I immediately stopped it. 😢
Were they preservative-free?
@@jeang3258 i don't have any idea...now i use Refresh tears. Its good.
Eye consultant in Aylesbury Bucks hospital strongly advised ONLY to use tepid water with a pinch of clean salt added as an eyewash. 😢
😂
What are NAC DROPS used for? Can you suggest any lubricant or gel for eyes
NAC drops are marketed that they can help reduce or reverse cataracts but there is limited evidence if they work or not. Some of my favorite eye drops include, Ivizia, Refresh Mega 3, Systane Complete PF, Optase MGD. All of these can usually be found at any pharmacy in the US.
@DoctorEyeHealth hmm. Thank u but I guess won't be available in India. Just heard about Nac drops. Will it harm upon usage please reply
I have had a few things done to my left eye. The first procedure was a Trabeculectomy of the left eye to reduce intraocular pressure. My eye doctor discovered i had a viral infection in the left eye. After using an oral medication to reduce the infection, My next procedure was a cataract removal with insertion of a lens. Even with the new lens my vision was still cloudy. I was told to wait a couple of months to see if the vision improved. Actually my vision was worse. After that i had a test done to examine the cornea. The result was a clouding at the back of the cornea. My next operation was a partial removal of the cornea, and inserting a doner piece of cornea. The result was a great improvement in vision. However, this vision began to deteriorate. Having a discussion with my doctor, we decided not to have another corneal partial replacement. All these procedures have made my left eye very dry.
I’m confused. I have eye allergies and dry eye. I’ve started using pataday to calm down the inflammation due to allergies (which dry my eyes out) but it contains BAK. Similarly, allaway preservative free is also apparently not great for dry eye. What can I use for my eye allergies that doesn’t worsen dry eye? I don’t want to leave it untreated, but don’t want to harm my dry eye while trying to treat it
I second this question
That is a really good question! I often do reach for preservative free alaway. Oral antihistamines can sometimes help but often makes dryness worse. Some of my patients have had good success with using topical cyclosporine to help (for both dryness and allergie sensations). Otherwise there is a new allergy type drop from Optase - I haven't tried it yet but it looks like it could be an option, it is preservative free.
@@DoctorEyeHealthgotcha, perfect thanks I will try these! Thanks for your content, binge watching your videos has been extremely useful for me! So just to confirm, the BAK in pataday makes it not worth using? My dry eye doctor said not to be concerned with BAK since I’m only using once a day, not using it 5, however I’ve seen a few places on the internet (your videos included) saying not to use anything with BAK at all.
Do you get any natural tears while crying or cutting onion?
I hope you answer my question I have a lot of mucus in my eyes my eyes are very dry. Is there a drop that can reduce the mucus without drying my eyes out even more
That’s so spooky just waiting to hear in Jan Feb of s surprise inheritance that l was notified of last year. 🙏
