  • Q&A with Academy Award nominee THE QUIET GIRL writer and director Colm Bairead and lead actors Catherine Clinch, Carrie Crowley and Andrew Bennett at the Angelika Film Center in New York City on February 23, 2023.
    ABOUT THE FILM
A delicate drama that follows a shy nine-year-old who has been separated from her immediate family and left in the care of two distant relatives for the summer. After sun-dappled days spent milking cows, peeling potatoes and fetching water from the well, the Initially uncommunicative child soon opens up to her foster parents. Textural and tender, this award-winning film shows that home is where you feel loved.

In May 2022 a friend and I were walking around Dublin and decided to take in a movie (any movie) so that we could escape the rain. We were a few minutes walk from the Irish Film Institute and The Quiet Girl was next on the schedule.
Needless to say we were deeply moved by the story and the acting. We were also intrigued that the all actors spoke Gaelic. There were only a few people in the theatre and we subsequently learned it was the second day the movie was playing so few people knew about it.
When we returned to Canada we told everyone we knew about the movie and were pleased to see that it played in a local theatre some months after our return. I was especially pleased to learn it was nominated for an Oscar last year.

This was filmed just over 3 months ago. I jump at every chance to watch interviews with the Colm and the cast. I saw the film twice at the classic Kentucky Theater two weeks apart, and it floated its way into my top 100, quite high up in the subcategory "Relationships". In the event Carrie sees this comment..... "What's it all about, Alfie?"

A boring, boring empty movie. Lots of pretense. You are waiting for anything to happen, anything at all. But nothing does. Waste of time.

...if you're not joking, I feel deeply sorry for your pitiful lack of depthful perception and general shallowness, and find your use of the word 'pretense' wildly pretentious... Apparently, you wouldn't recognize a masterpiece if it ran you over..?
