Moving from real-estate to wheel-estate can be tricky #TracysPun. Perhaps that’s why real-estate is our #1 question: Should we sell our house, rent our house, downsize, buy a “plan B home”, or sell it all stay on the road indefinitely? For us, we’re becoming empty nesters (one kid at a time). We quickly realized after Tori went to college that we needed to have a place for our family to reunite and spend the holidays. That made buying the “KYD Cabin” and renovating it to become a vacation rental the right choice for us at this time. Here's an idea. For those that might have an RV with them while they are there at the KYD Cabin; Ya might think about putting in a way of hooking up an RV along side of the cabin if it is needed.
Watching this video now. I knew immediately what you were going to say happened, or almost happened to you. I’m in Escrow in Oregon and we preach wire fraud everyday! I’m so glad that Chase was on it for you and saved your funds from being lost forever!

With regard to your tire wear/axel. I had the EXACT same issue. I went to 2 different RV shops over 2 years to have tires, replaced, brakes etc. Both times they "inspected" everything and said they see no problem but the axel may be bent. We were up in BC, Canada at the time and I had planned to find a trailer repair shop that could do axle alignments once we got back to the States. Well, we didn't make it. While driving on the main hwy through Squamish the axle sheared off and the right rear tire went flying and bouncing across 2 lanes of traffic, then hit the concrete barrier and came back across! Damn lucky no one was hit or killed! Anyway, it turned out my axle had a hair line crack in it underneath that slowly got worse. Make sure they look it all over well!

I just watched a video today from awhile back, a guy with an Airstream had clipped a curb, didn't think anything of it and like 2 mos later he had the same problem with his axels and they had to be realigned and it was quite the process, awesome they are taking care of it for you.Cabin looks like a fantastic little decompression area.
On the axle, I hope It's covered by warranty. Good thing you checked the tire!!!
On the cabin, good move. A vacation rental, passive income stream. Also, a real, permanent address for legal uses. And a place for occasional "road recovery".

I just love the two of you and you’re awesome children, I can’t remember exactly when I started following you but it was definitely well before Alaska. You’re very inspiring, my husband and I are 18 months from retirement and we’re really trying to figure out how that’s going to look. We live in Vancouver, British Columbia and want to spend winters somewhere south, maybe Palm Springs but I’m now also looking at somewhere in Arizona. The problem has always been finding accommodations for 6 months that won’t break the bank. We are starting to lean towards a 5th wheel, thanks to your RUclips videos I think it might be something we could really get into. Life hack for that hand crank for your awkward spare. Put the end of the hand crank into a cordless drill. Speeds it up quite a bit. Also, congrats on the cabin! That's so sweet!! Much love! Travel safe!

Getting a cabin is such a great idea! It's nice to have a house that you can come back to when you need it & rent it out the rest of the time. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Well, Very nice cabin. Wife and I had one very similar to yours. Started back in the early 90s, just had the shell built on six wooded acres high up in mountains of Pa. Did the whole interior myself, excluding the rough pluming and electric. Took many years of weekends. Then we were getting on in age and two houses to take care of became a burden. I enjoyed the mountains very much, so we sold the cabin in 30 days time, shocked us. So we bought our Scamp so we can go places, just the three of us,me , Ginger, my dog and wife. Thats our cabin on wheels . Enjoy it. Carl

I had a similar problem with my first travel trailer. One axle was misaligned causing wear on the two tires. I was out of the Utica, NY area heading to Alaska when we discovered the problem in Edmonton, Alberta. Canada Tire replaced the tires and did the alignment while my wife and I went out and visited Fort Edmonton. Great day!

You folks come up with the most innovative/real life situations and share to keep KYD a place we want to come back to. Best of luck with this venture. I chose to sell my land and home in Vermont when I decided to go full time in my RV. 8 years later and on 2nd RV since leaving, (4 Rv's I have owned..., Old Concord box type Class A, 35 ft Jayco 5th wheel, 27 ft 5th wheel after my wife passed away, and now a 27 ft travel trailer.) I have no regrets selling and not looking back. Bruce Matthews age 69 disabled Vet. 47 years owning my own business shoeing draft horses all over New England states. Retired..

We had the very same axle issue with our (new) Jayco 5th wheel. While we have had numerous issue with this trailer, they replaced the axle & both tires without hesitation.

The cabin is adorable, can't wait ti see the final product. Excited to see where yiur going, and what your doing in season 6. Marc when we had problems with our RV, a representative cane nm in from the RV manufacture, approved the work, and the crew worked on our RV. We were without n RV for 2 months. Be prepared for longer a couple of days. Maintenance on RV's are in slow paced mode.

Exciting times for you. We bought a condo in Kissimmee 6 years ago to have our own “home” away from home. We loved it but finally, 3 years ago we decided to finally go for our dream of having an RV and travelling all winter and come the end of December that is what we are finally going to try. Full time RV for 4-6 months as we move towards full retirement. Real estate, while it can be pricey to renovate, can be scary but if you rent while you are not using it, the property is working for you, so go for it. No time like the present to live your dreams! Congratulations!

Had the same type of axle problem. Found it difficult locating a business that straightened axles. Finally found one and our axle was1/4 in off. Now all is good.
Have similar problem with axle. How did you find business to straighten the axle? New axle is around $700-800 installed.
Had the same problem with insides of the tires wearing faster than the rest of the tire. I took the TT to Straight Line Suspension in Mesa, AZ and had the axles alligned.
Your new cabin looks great. Glad you now have a place to rendezvous. We did a similar thing when we transitioned to living in our beach condo in Ocean City, NJ. We travel to Florida in the winter and live in our RV (a Class A Thor Miramar) and around the country during the summer months. For ten weeks or so we rent out our condo by the week to summertime vacationers. Since we've done this every summer since 1999, when we had a home in Maryland which we no longer own now that we're retired, we have quite a list of reliable people who have rented from us for years. We spend the shoulder seasons at our beach condo in NJ and use the income from our summer rentals to pay for improvements, the cost of Florida in the winter, and to ski in Colorado, Utah and Vermont during the snow season. Our son works in Baltimore and can visit easily for holidays and long beach weekends whenever possible. It's an ideal arrangement for us. Can't wait to see the finished KYD cabin and maybe ski in Arizona someday soon.

I noticed the same kind of wear on my brother-in-laws cargo trailer. After he and I jacked it up and took the tires and hubs off. We could see one of the spindles was bent. Throwing off the camber of the wheel. Bought a new axle and reassembled. Tows like a dream and no more tire issues.

We can’t wait to see what the axle problem is. We are having the same issue with our Cougar. Someone told me wheel bearings. I checked them and found they were not tightened properly. (Thanks Camping World) Plus the rollers in the bearings were bad. I fixed all of that but that did not correct the problem. So, two more tires shot. I’m carrying two spares ( thanks for that tip) and keeping a very close eye on tire wear. I took a long straight edge and placed it on top of the axles. The axle with the tire issue definitely has less of a crown in it than the other. When we get home in May it’s new axle time.

When we take trips to the mountains we always pick cabins over condos (before RV life of course). Very popular way to stay. You will have no problem getting back your money with this beauty. List it with a reputable company and let them find your renters for a small fee. It will be worth it with your busy life. Your investment will provide for years to come. Great job guys.
Thanks. Yes, I think we've decided to use a company that's a bit more than a small fee, but have exceptional service and local support. You're right, we have zero time to help with issues.
Really cute cabin! Can't wait to see the renovation. I'm just down the street from Little America in the Country Club area. What I'm doing is renting out the bedrooms. I just have one more to rent out. I am keeping one for myself so as to have a place to come off the road and to be able to pop back in at anytime and check on the place. I'm planning on keeping this place and handing it down to my children. I am seriously looking now for my rv, which is really a hard choice on which way to go. I want to be in Quartzsite by mid January. I can't wait to start my rv adventure! Hope to meet up with you somewhere along our journey's. We were up to Alaska this past summer as well and my brother in-law was with us and broke a spring coming off the ferry at Dawson city...he was able to get a new spring from NAPA but I guess it was too long and by the time we got back to Prince George his tire looked just like yours. New spring and all new bushings and shackles and all was good

Good luck with the axle issue. We're heading out again this Tuesday and I inspected and rotated our RV tires today. Gave each hub a couple shots of grease as well. We're considering short term vacation rental options for our home near AVL, NC, also.
We have been on the road since April. Hubby has a job he loves now in Phoenix ironically. We will be buying here in a few months. We will be so appreciative for the little luxuries. We just can't decide what we want in a home...like the small living but space will be great too. We want to be able to travel often too so low maintenance and an RV gate is a must.
I am so sorry that happened to you guys! But congrats on the new rental cabin! I think overall, this video highlights the flexibility of our way of life. No "one size fits all" here. I have heard lately of those who feel like some folks make part-timers feel as if they are "not doing it right." Each part of life has it's challenges and it requires creativity and flexibility to adapt to YOUR particular needs. Yes, we RV'ers are a Tribe, but no one way is "the" way. I am full timing while I do contract work on the road. It makes the most sense from an economic and practicality stand point. For others, living part-time is the best option. Just say "NO" to being "should on."

Rv maintenance...glad you are showing this side of RVing. We were thinking of doing a vacation rental in Marble Falls, but recent flooding has put that on hold

Congrats on getting the cabin and NOT getting taken on the scam! I think I recognized the camping spot you were in while checking the tires. We stayed there for a few days. Got to watch a polo team practice in the field next to you. A neat place to camp. Enjoy the cabin and the process of fixing it up. We love doing that kind of thing. (Have fixed up 3 houses ourselves - and I do mean OURSELVES. :~)

Good thing you caught the “bad” tire, a blowout on a trailer can be catastrophic damage to the trailer.

Bought 2 houses w/out seeing first! First one in FL, I bought w/out hubby seeing and 2nd in NC mountains hubby bought and I never saw. Believe me your kitchen is a 1000% more updated than either of ours are/were. The NC house is slowly getting updated now with mechanical and structural (well, heat, roof, doors). The yellow 1963 kitchen will be next. Looking forward to reno pics ;- }
