    ℹ️About the episode:
    About 15 minutes into our drive to Fort Wilderness on I-4 we heard a loud metal clinking, like a pinball beneath the rig. Concerned, I quickly looked in my driver side mirror and saw large plastic pieces bouncing down the freeway and immediately assumed the generator exhaust pipe was ripped off and possibly took the plumbing with it... but that was not the case. We pulled over to investigate and found nothing. A few more miles down the road we begin to hear a thumping sound coming from the floorboard of the F450, which remains a mystery until several episodes from now! I won't spoil the surprise.
    Backing into our site at Disney's Fort Wilderness was tight, but it went well. The turning radius of the Ford F450 and Grand Design 5th wheel toy hauler continues to deliver. Drive days and backing into sites is the best part of RVing right now, but we're still in the honeymoon of this new monster rig.

    One thing a lot of new tow hauler owners don't realize is the tongue weight is going to be much heavier than a comparable size non-hauler trailer, because the toy garage is above or behind the axles of the trailer, so a 2000lb toy load would offset a lot of that tongue weight. I had this same thing happen the first time I towed our toy hauler without anything in the back. From then on, even if we are just taking it out for the weekend without anything in the garage, I put as much weight as I can of camping gear, BBQ, tools, whatever in the garage to offset the weight. Otherwise you can easily overload the read axle of your truck, as you found out.
    The nice thing about a toy hauler is the axles are far back, so they track really well.

    • @nbhybrid206
      @nbhybrid206 5 лет назад

      Donald Tripp I know a guy with a huge toy hauler that didn’t have much weight in the back and it developed stress cracks on the corners up front. Had to go back to manufacture. Next they got a new trailer so unsure if it was unfixable. Without that counterbalancing troubles will arise

    Just bought that domestic cooler over the weekend. On sale at camping world for 800$ with a discount code. Bought it to supplement the refrigerator and as a backup. Our refrigerator is 14 years old now and I wouldn’t be surprised for it to go out at any time.

    The wide turn theory works good with normal like semi trailers. But with campers and 5th wheels the way you're talking about turning you have to watch for the tail swing a lot more. Cause the axles are so stupid far forward. Just what I've learned from driving the semi trailers over the years.

  • @RushinTruckin
    @RushinTruckin 5 лет назад +3

    You're spot on with the turning of that thing, Marc. You're nearly as long as my big rig @ 75".
    Here are some tips if you don't know them already: If there are more than 1 left turn lane, you always want to be in the farthest right lane and finish in the farthest right lane. If there are multiple right turn lanes, be in the furthest left lane.
    When making a right turn, go out straight just like you said and turn hard to prevent curbing your trailer tires. NEVER do a "jug handle" turn where you swing wide left then turn right because this will give people behind you an opportunity to sneak up on your right and bad things happen (and YES, there ARE people that do this!).

  • @tx2sturgis
    @tx2sturgis 5 лет назад +7

    Great videos! Some info and terminology for you guys: Wide right turns with 5th wheel rigs, like semi-truck and trailer rigs, are of two basic kinds: button-hook turns and jug-handle turns. ( I hear you snickering!)
    Button-hook turns are when you proceed straight into the intersection and then hook a hard right into the next lane over (or opposing lane) and swing back into your lane to continue. The trailer tires should be quite close to the curb thru the entire turn.
    Jug-handle turns involve swinging the power-unit (that's your pickup truck) partially or fully over to the left and possibly into the next or opposing lane, BEFORE you break the plane of the intersection, and THEN swing right...and depending on the radius you cut, the trailer may or may not be close to the curb (watch out for 4-wheelers cutting in between you and the curb, always have that right turn signal blinking!) but both the pickup and the trailer will arc into your desired lane as you depart the intersection. Using either technique (or sometimes a combination of both) depends on the intersection and the traffic in, and approaching it, if any. Hope this makes sense.

    • @minirail
      @minirail 5 лет назад

      button hook turns are a personal favorite of mine, when there is a vehicle in the opposing lane. the look on there faces, when your heading straight for them, and only 2 foot away from hitting them is just priceless lol there is a line on most roads indicating where your supposed to be stopped for the light. most ignore that and pull ahead blocking the intersection.....so i target those when i have the toy hauler behind me.

    My wife "loves it" when I take my truck and trailer across the scale to make sure we're legal. Now every time we pass a scale her and my daughters say " Dad we should totally scale the truck!!!" Good job, not enough people take the time to make sure they're safe, and alot of people lecture about getting a 1 ton and never check their weights.

    We do the same thing as far as the hours in the park. We are in at park opening, have an early cheap lunch, then back to the hotel/campground for nap, pool time, on on site event and back into the parks for 4 -5 PM, some more touring in Epcot and then an hour before fireworks, we are poppin' a squat at the Rose and Crown in England on the patio for dinner and dessert while we "linger" a bit with a prime viewing spot for the fireworks. If we're in MK for the fireworks, we head to the Contemporary Resort or Grand Floridian Narcossee's for prime viewing there. If you are at Disney in the dead of summer, you avoid the super, duper hot part of the day that just exhausts you and you miss the afternoon thunderstorms.

    Norcold Refrigerator solution (for us) - I think we have the same Norcold model 2118 refrigerator. Ours consistently would not get cold enough in the freezer, the refrigerator part seemed ok, but we never measured the temp since the freezer would only go down to about 25 deg F.
    I trouble shot the various voltages and everything seemed to be correct. I solved the problem by installing a dual refrigerator fan ( Titan- 12V DC Double Rack Mount Ventilation Cooling Fan for Refrigerator Vent and Ventilation Grille with Speed Controller (90mm) TTC-SC22 from Amazon) and now our freezer gets to 8 degF. Fyi, the 120mm fans might be too large and the smaller 90mm fans work great.
    Also, our left refrigerator door flap that is in the middle would get stuck open leaving a gap between the doors. It seems that Norcold did install the washer to raise our door, but then the flap would get stuck on another part of the door. We solved that by slowly shaving off the rubbing plastic. (Difficult to explain in writing on where the rubbing plastic is).

    Love your videos.. I pull a 44.5 ft triple axle toy hauler as well. I will say in my old Super C rv I switched from a dometic RV (propane/electric) refrigerator to a residential refrigerator, and I would never go back to an RV style fridge. I have a residential LG fridge in my toyhauler now, and with the inverter it works great. The truck alternator charges the batteries going down the road, so it never goes dead while towing. While dry camping the 4 batteries in the 5th wheel will keep the fridge going for a day or two, but with the generator running, of course the batteries are charging again. I'll never go back to an RV style fridge. I am jealous of the Dometic cooler they sent you though.... I want one!!!

    • @KeepYourDaydream
      @KeepYourDaydream  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, I think I'm headed down that same path. The lithium battery bank we're installing, charging a fridge while dry camping will not be a problem.

    I have the smaller version of the Dometic. Best thing I have ever bought for the RV. I use it because I will not drive with fridge running on LP. Runs for days on a 100ah battery when no AC available. Cools super quick and stays at the temp setting. You will not be disappointed. I do regret not buying a bigger version.

    As you were refering to in the begining with turning. I learned from truckers how to haul and tow. I dont have a CDL, but i could go get one tomorrow if desired. When turning, you take all the room you have and more if possible. I pull a largest cattle trailer on the market for dually trucks. Its a tri could be quad axle looks about 40ft long i think. You learn to take all the room you have possible every turn even if not needed. Dont concern yourself with tail-swing as there aint much. Ive dont scared a couple cars and waited trough traffic light cycles pissing traffic off because others were in the way. Thats just how it is, and how i deem safe. Afterall, i do not have an accident on record for being at fault. Ive been in a couple because of people running lights, signs and road rage, but never one from my mistake.

    Fort Wilderness is one of my favorite campgrounds! It's amazing! A couple of corrections on your Disney tips though in case no one has said it. Fast passes can be made 60 days in advance if you are staying on Disney property, 30 days otherwise. And dining reservations can be made 180 days in advance if staying on property. Also, parking is not free for all Disney resorts, except Fort Wilderness. I guess they assume that you are pulling your camper or towing a car, so they don't charge you for parking at your own site. Such a fun place to visit!

    We have friends that 20 years ago had a tree fall on their trailer in F.W. while they were at M.K. when they got back to where their trailer had been there was a Disney team waiting where their trailer had been. Disney had taken the trailer away to be repaired and put them up in a huge 3 bedroom suite in the Wilderness Lodge. Refunded their stay at F.W. and their park passes and gave them a free stay for the future and paid for all their meals out. When they took them to their suite they had disney overnight bags for the whole family with pj's, bathing suits, toiletries, flip flops, and then they brought them everything they needed from their trailer. Our friends said it was their best Disney trip ever. Oh and they got a behind the scenes VIP tour of M.K. and they got to go to any dinner shows/character breakfasts they wanted to.

    Those 12 volt coolers are the bomb. About 7 years ago we bought one from ARB and use it often. Only one zone but it gets down to -15 Celcius in a snap. Usually use it when my RV fridge messes up in the winter months. I live in it full time for working out of town and winters up north are a pain for RV living. Also had a 2 zone Engel that worked incredible. Happy to see Dometic stepped up their game for you.

    Nice rig -i have very similiar rig. I have 2013 dutchman voltage toyhauler full body paint- it looks very very similiar to yours. Mine is 42 ft 9inches long and weighs 19,000 gross. You are now towing some serious weight. As a similiar owner i suggest please check your tires and see if they are g rated and 14 ply. If not i suggest you get new tires right away. I just had brand new cheap tires on my toyhauler it came with. They lasted about 6 months before i had my first blowout. When my front right tire blewout on my voltage it tore out my electrical to my kitchen slide. Fortunately i was able to repair the wiring myself. (Not my first toyhauler blowout.) I love my rig. You will get used to towing yours and find that the factory fuel tank on your f450 now seems very small. Since your new ginormous rig is so long it is not as easy to a fuel station that will fit you-causing range anxiety with your likely 35 gallonish stock fuel tank. I removed the factory tank on my f350 6.7L diesel and had a larger 55 gallon after market one put in. Its better than putting a fuel tank in your bed- but it costs more. Costed about $1300 installed. These large toyhaulers are a moderate pain in the but to tow around-BUT- once you are setup they are so worth it! Enjoy your videos!

    Those Dometic CFX coolers are awesome! You got the big one, dual zone, dual controls. I have a CFX50, and it makes the perfect beer fridge for the patio. Turn it down to about 30 degrees, and icy cold beers! If you are running them on battery, the CFX95 dual zone you have will run about 2-3 days on a 100ah deep cycle battery. Awesome for dry camping. My CFX50 will run over 24 hours on a little 33ah battery in my Goal Zero 400 power pack. With my 100 watt solar panel, and decent sun, I can run it indefinitely.

    Mark - It's called a button hook turn. They can be very difficult especially in tight or urban areas. Also be careful when executing those turns is wet or icy conditions they can actually cause a jack knife. I love the new rig, it looks really sharp.

    Mark: As a former professional driver for Werner; your points on turning are correct. You go out into the intersection a long way, then turn your truck tight. The trailer will track behind you, but it has to have the space.

    I’ve got to second Marc’s “skip the afternoon “ tip. I worked at Disneyland for several years, which taught me to always go “home” in the afternoon for a nap. Especially if you are with young children, but it is good advice for anyone. You beat the worst crowds, the worst heat, and miss most of the tired, crying children.

    Our first RV was a momentum and we had problems with our fridge also. Funny that we do not have a you tube channel so we did not get the portable cooler offered to us by the company. Never got the fridge to work correctly so we sold the unit and bought a DRV with a residential fridge and solar to power it while going down the road. Have not looked back and yes, we full time.

    Marc, for your charger if you forget it at the trailer, you can "buy" one in Disney, they're not that expansive (roughly 30$). They are located pretty much everywhere (can be found on the app) in vending machines and they are called fuel rod. The good thing, yours is empty (fuel rod), no worries, you go back to a vending machine, put yours in and swap for another one full for free, or use the cables that comes with and recharge it yourself if back at the hotel... Call tips and tricks 3a.... lol

    I know people don’t normally go up too on their RV’s but I’ve seen plenty of tools and such come off RV’s traveling down the highway.
    That weight is close to what we weighed coming out of Alaska to SC. Our trailer was just under 21,000 lbs. 450 pulls it good and the engine breaking is awesome. The Rockies are not a problem.
    As for turns, remember the tail swing. I’ve seen people back into or pull into things because they were to involved with watching one side for to long. Each turn may require a different approach to complete.
    Wide hips don’t like most drive-through. Remember it’s a dually.

    I am a semi truck driver, you are towing a trailer that is only about 13 feet short from what I work with every day. You are right about turns, you should always go as wide as you can. Always turn left from the farthest right lane you can. When you take a right turn, if there is a sign, or a pole, or traffic crosswalk sign, perform what we call in our industry a button hook turn. You need to make sure you are clear on your left and pull into the lane taking up both lanes, and turn wide as hell. Be careful out there guys, lots of people who are not truck drivers try to pull those monster rvs and wind up crashing. One last tip, if your traveling through the mountains, don't ever let the trailer be moving faster than you. Always feel like you are pulling the trailer. Take the turns through the mountains slow and in rain or snow even slower, that way you never Jack knife. I've seen it too many times from folks pulling rvs. Good luck, and be safe.

    I wonder if the noise you heard was something that fell from the roof? AC cover? Antenna? Something left there from Lazy Days?
    One of the secrets of Disney is to avoid going from a show to a ride. Shows let out a thousand people and rides take them in slowly. I also heard Tuesday is the lightest day. Once we attempted to have a drink in every country in Epcot during a press event. OMG! A whole new way to see the park....we were kindly asked to keep it down.

    Because your trailer nose is over the truck bed, airflow can cause unfamiliar noises at highway speed and it can suck bed contents out, which might be fine with a bumper pull. Use extra care securing.
