State reviews how officer joined Eastpointe police while facing firing in Detroit

- The state agency that licenses police officers in Michigan is investigating the circumstances that allowed a Detroit police officer facing termination to accept a new job with Eastpointe Police.
Cops protect cops even when they know they’re wrong.
"They're" wrong, not, "their" wrong! 😉 (but I agree with your premise!) 👍
Of course they need to protect each other. Who’s gonna protect them? The public? Lmao the public despises cops.
You are so right about that❗️👍
Truth....but we ...the people are waking up
Just like gang members
Once a cop does something like this they should not be allowed to work as a cop ever again
I think that's taking it too far but I do believe they need to be punished severely. People should generally get a second chance as everyone makes mistakes. I think going to jail for a month is about right and then undergo extensive training if he wants to work as a cop. I also think that:
1. The Eastpointe cop who hired him and stated it wasn't his job to check the guy's background should be fired. That's incompetence. It shows he doesn't have the intelligence for the position.
2. Every cop that stood by after the cop punched the victim should be suspended and demoted. This will send a message to the rest of the police force.
3. Even though the cop resigned, he should be fired anyway so that it becomes a part of his permanent record.
@@morninglift1253 this situation, this officer should not be allowed to wear a uniform, badge or gun ever again. He is a danger to anyone in public he encounters. These officers are fully aware their actions are being recorded on body cams. Their conduct is intentional knowing their department would try to cover it up. Look at it like this, if you had a business and one of your employees was stealing from you, would you retrain that individual or fire them? I made my point!
@@truthillinois6397 I think you're being a bit too harsh. I agree that the employee should be fired but you're arguing that the employee should never work in the industry again. Do you believe if an employee was caught stealing, he should never be allowed to work?
@@morninglift1253 Aggravated assault and battery is a felony......
He should be charged with assault!!
This is the reason sometimes people take matters into their own hands.
Yep
What these people don't get is, saying you did your diligence on a background check and "missing" something this public means one of 2 things. Either they are incompetent, or lying. Both are worse than just saying that you chose to overlook it, in my opinion anyway.

No one suppose to be above the law.
This is not a cop this is a dangerous criminal.
He's only dangerous to anyone who isn't looking, and only if he has a gang behind him. One on one, I bet he's a crier.
That's all cops. They are above the law & this is more proof of that.
Cop/dangerous criminal ... the two are NOT mutually exclusive.
Too many are. Some that are now training for the job. Why would they not want a job that would keep their worse qualities from being prosecuted, pay them for it, and will always give them a pass socially?
You are missing the point then bewater if you think this cop is the criminal. The real criminals are ALL of the cops around him that not only didn't arrest him, they ASSISTED him !!
Then what about all the cops at the two police departments that investigated him ? This single cop is the dangerous criminal ? YEAH RIGHT !!
The police UNION needs to be investigated.
I agree they the one told him about the Eastpointe position opening and detroit knew he was transferring that's why they didn't even file his paperwork till Oct after he got the Eastpointe job and Eastpointe manager needs to be fired for being in cohoust with the union to hire this guy
What Union? You know that there are numerous unions that cover cops! Detroit has there own union, and Eastpointe has a different unon.
@@cowboyx9380 ❤
Most definitely! They are the wedge that manipulates the prosecutors office.
No the Union fights for their members( that’s their job). It’s up to management to get their sh!t right and get rid of the bad apples. This was management not firing IG this officer. He quite before he could get fired. East Point probably didn’t ask if there were problems with him. That’s what a lot of Police and fire departments do.
Thank you for covering this!!
This is happening everywhere. Many police departments and corrections departments are hiring the baser sort.
We need a law that any officer who is terminated, resigns in lieu of termination, or resigns while under investigation can never be a law enforcement officer, prison guard, military policeman, state trooper, federal, state, or county agent, or armed security guard anywhere. Make it a felony for them to even apply for another job in any of those fields, and a felony for somebody to hire him.
I love you ! You said it best !!!!!!!
Well as it said in the video, under Michigan law, this officer should not have been able to apply and be hired for another job until after an investigation was completed on his competency. That is if DPD had done what they were required to do. The commission that certifies officers in Michigan need to look into who at DPD failed to do their jobs and if there was any criminal intent on the part of DPD officers. There definitely needs to be sanctions put on DPD and the East Pointe Police Department for this egregious (possibly intentional) failure.
That’s unrealistic. An investigation does’t mean that the person is guilty or charged with anything. If they quite while under investigation, the investigation shouldn’t stop. It should continue to the end. If not guilty of wrong doing, they should be allowed to continue to work. I don’t think that dept. should investigate their own officers.
@@newnana9070 No. If they resign while under investigation it's an admission of guilt. They obviously wouldn't take such a serious action unless they had a pretty good idea of what the results would be.
@Lord John Wharfin Excellent idea!

Totally agree JAIL for a few yrs is appropriate for the crime he comiitted
20 Years!
It is a criminal system allowing all that to happen in the lawless land
10 years is not long enough for breaking his oath of office, violating people's rights and physically harming people, all while armed with a deadly weapon at that.
They should continued their investigation even when they quit. Treat them as regular employees. They should file assault charges and lying on a official report.
Would love to see a follow up interview with the district attorney to discuss why criminal charges were not filed against this former Detroit police officer
Unacceptable ,unprofessional inappropriate , and irresponsible , police should never put hands on anyone unless the force of use is being applied to them.

Officer Roberts needs to be in jail rather than putting others in jail. He not only committed battery, but he also committed a federal felony when he deprived his victim of rights under the color of law. The action of Roberts was much more serious than if a civilian had done the same thing. It needs to be treated that way and charged that way. Cops like Roberts are why civilians have so much distrust for the police. Officers like all those who were around Roberts when this happened are just as bad. They should have intervened and arrested him on the spot. That is the action required to gain back the trust of the public.
This is a case of: "Bro, I'm sorry, but you really fucked up, and we need to take you in and fill some paperwork." He should have been charged on the spot, and his colleagues who didn't take him into custody should have been fired. All of them. They're all thugs.
If a regular citizen punched someone for no reason they would be arrested and charged with assault and battery. Cops get away with murder, and nothing is being done to fix this problem. The same laws that they are sworn to protect should apply to EVERYONE. Qualified immunity is a huge problem. They can literally do what they want without fear of incarceration. Eventually, people are going to get fed up and start fighting back.
Imagine what would happen to a citizen if they popped a cop in the face like this. More than likely that citizen would suffer multiple, serious injuries if not death.
I didn't even hear about this, but it's a black cop, black guy so that's why.

I can believe they didn’t know, they usually don’t know these kinds of things because they don’t care. I’m from Detroit, over 40, have loved traveling all my life and Michigan has the worst pigs I’ve found anywhere. Even the small country towns in Michigan have at least 1 terrorist pig, when I was young I lived in a country area of Michigan that only had 3 cops and everyone knew which one to watch out for. For any auditors that hope to go viral and get settlements, go to Warren Michigan. They’re the absolute worst Michigan has to offer, hearing them say get out or stay out of my city has been normal since I was a kid, I’ve been a witness and victim of their tyranny. Go to Fitzgerald high school and ask questions about their police encounters, you won’t believe most of the stories until they start to pile up and you notice the similarities. The only decent encounter I’ve ever had with a cop was in Windsor Canada, never had a good encounter in the states.

Never mind him being hired at another department. He should be well on his way to prison!! The video speaks for itself!! You have people incarcerated on hearsay and no evidence, yet DPD and Wayne County wants to pretend like they just overlooked the multiple camera angles of him committing blatant assault and battery!!
You should be more than concerned and should take action by suspending him without pay and await the findings of the previous police department which would've been his firing which should disqualify him from further holding a badge anywhere. This happens all to often and is a tactic that officers use to eacape punishment, unemployment and lawsuits.
It’s a simple solution; Link cops Certification to any and all disciplinary actions.
A cop being investigated, his certification should automatically be placed in a suspended/hold status.
The cop cannot have his certification suspension lifted until the disciplinary action has been completely decided.
Ex: Cop does bad at department X. Cops certification is placed on a disciplinary suspension. The cop is ineligible to be hired at any law enforcement agency since his law enforcement certification is in a suspended state. If the cop quits deptX, and waits 10 years before applying to be a cop somewhere, his certification is still suspended since the disciplinary action was never resolved.
What’s the point of having law enforcement certification if it’s not used to monitor the behaviour of the cop?
For that action should be a reaction.
Great reporting, keep it up. Drag them all for being untruthful.
The state agency that certifies officers needs to look into that Chief that hired him in East Pointe. The background check was a joke because they more then likely didn’t contact anyone at DPD.
Uncalled for that was totally unacceptable.
There's absolutely ZERO excus3s for such things as this to slip by considering all disastorous law enforcement incidents, criminal incidents around the country.
Every police union needs to be investigated. This is an ongoing incident that happens every day. When one officer gets on the brink of termination or an officer is about to be charged and fired then they’re always transferring the officer to another location in the United States in order to avoid media scrutiny or prosecution for the officer. Las Vegas and Los Angeles are infamous for criminal cops/police officers committing crimes and then moving them to a different precinct so they can continue working as a police officer. SMH this is a threat against your constitutional rights and a threat to your life by the police union😮
Another example of where administrators and supervisors support this type of behavior. His CO should have been immediately involved with this. It's a clear violation. He should not have a badge much less a job at this point. Just think about. Who would hire somebody knowing that they have done this and gotten away with it? Another police department that's who.
Been saying this for years. Officers should not be allowed to resign when they are under investigation. As this story shows doing shows how officers can go from department to department if they think they my get fired.

The city is no different. They chase away those who try to make positive change and coddle the self indulgent people just using the city & district as a stepping stone. A debacle all the way around.
