I have been riding the Zero DS 14.4 K battery since 2013. It is still going strong. I can cruse down the freeway at 70 and pass a car and look down and I am all of a sudden doing 90. It is so fun going from light to light and leaving most of the gas bikes behind as well as the cars. It is quiet also to sneak up on people. Ridden it over 40 miles at Freeway speeds. It doesn't pop wheelies as well as the FX, as that is a wheelie machine. it is just too tall for my 31 inch inseam to where I am not comfortable riding it on snow and ice. (my favorite sport)

So far I've seen range of 80 (freeway) to over 400 miles (hypermiling). Trips on Highway 33 near Ojai, CA (top ride for sure) saw over 200 miles range doing the Reyes Peak climb to over 7,000'. My Gods electric is so fun, if the range is there. Thanks for a comprehensive and concise opinion of what you consider to be the 'best bikes' in each category. Since you are an actual rider/racer your views are much more credible to me than so many others. Have a great holiday and here's to more EVs in 2021 and beyond.
@Mark Kitaoka Thanks as always Mark! By the way, I've had a lot of questions here about the Cake Kalk and would definitely put the Kalk& as the dual-sport runner up. I know you chose the & over the Zero due to it's lightweight and probably have great insight for those considering one. Anyone with questions regarding the Cake should check out Mark's website: cakekalk.com/ Tons of first-hand experience and expert opinions there!! ^^^
Thank you very much dude appreciate the true factual reviews of bike that you can actually buy. I love my Sur Ron it’s nice to be able to hit almost all terrain
Love the trials style riding. Got into it when i would take my 1200 vstar classic metric cruiser offroad in the desert. Real slow and carefully picking my path so as not to damage the cruiser. After trying that, i was hooked on slow n difficult riding.
Honesty with facts behind opinions. I can’t argue with any of the facts that you pointed out. Been on two wheels since the very early 50’s, ride a 16k hard tail now.
Great info on Ebikes.Got the Segway x260 and love it. I see 15 to 20 miles on hard riding.Just getting back into riding again from a KTM 300 EXC 15 years ago. I do want to get a 4 stroke by spring for longer rides.
Great review as usual, thanks! I would like to know what you think about charging and the other aspects of living with these different bikes. Not sure if you've had them long enough to get a feel for that. How long do they take to charge? Any "special features" or drawbacks that bothered you. I'm down to the KTM, Zero FX and Electric Motion. Thanks and keep up the great work.
i currently own a banshee , and a ktm 300exc. and various other MT bikes, road bicycles. an electric bike never crossed my mind until, we just moved to a town that is dominated with bicycle riders and there is a old rail road converted and paved into a riding trail. electric bikes are welcome. and its a small town so ripping in the woods with the dirt bike is a no go. the police station is 1/8 mile from my house. lol. the bike trail would be awesome with an electric bike because there is small trails off of it all over the place. nice review im thinking about the surron.
My friend got his 2020 KTM Freeride E street legal with very little work. Also I ride a 2009 Zero XE and it is much quieter then my other friends 2021 EM Escape. I haven't tried the new FX so can't say on that one. But the 1st thing my friend with the KTM said was this bike is so quiet compared to the KTM, Sur-Ron or EM Escape as we all ride together and trade bikes.
Would you be interested in testinf Vector Vortex ebike? I think you will be surprised by amount of torque and how quiet it is beeing middrive bike. Let me know.
You should test and review a Delfast Top 3.0. it looks very similar with the Surron X, but Delfast Top 3.0 claims to have 50mph/80kmh max speed with 200miles/321km range on a single charge. Also what sounds a kind of too optimistic thing is that in the battery details they say it will last for 3000 charging cycles which is ~ 600000 miles / 960000km ( sure 😅 )
Man my BMX bike can push $1500 with certain parts. Mountain Bikes jump 2k plus easy, so $3600 seriously isn’t that bad. But I think over the last few months the prices have gone closer to $4000
Excellent summarization of all these bikes! I'd love to see a comprehensive list of some of the other bikes out there stacked into the same categories or a matrix with all parameters. For example, I have a 2016 Typhoon. It's got 6,000 Watts, weighs 115 lb, range about 30 miles/4000 ft climb with upgraded battery very quiet, brakes and suspension slightly better than Sur Ron and cost about $6000 to 8000 depending on how it's configured. Unfortunately at the time that I purchased it I don't believe the Sur Ron was available to me yet. I would definitely get a Sur Ron instead of this bike at this point because it's cheaper and has motorcycle wheels instead of mountain bike wheels and therefore more rugged.
Very well done and thought out opinions on key topics anyone would want to know if considering an off road ebike. I originally had my mind set on upgrading to a new MTB, but lately my priorities in this regard have been swayed by the features a modern ebike has to offer. This video helped out a lot, thanks! At this point I'm inclined to consider a dual sport model.
Excellent review, it's always nice to hear useful information from someone who actually rides. Also someone please please resurrect Alta! I just bout a 350sxf but would have bought an Alta if they were still available!
@Matt South Thanks man! I wish Alta were still around but we'll have some cool new options in the near future. The 350SXF is one hell of a bike! Can't go wrong with that choice. Enjoy 👍
This review got you a sub. I saw your exc. vs electric vid. Ebike school has some good technical content. Been on the cusp about a Sir Ron. My CRF250X and XR650L combo work for my needs but, was thinking an ebike for urban.
I also sub'd because of the excellent content and presentation. I now also want a Sur Ron or a Segway! And a Sondors Meta for just tooling around town. Not to be greedy, but a 2WD Ariel or similar for when the goin starts a slowin. I'm lovin this e-bike revolution were havin!
Zero fx for me, but are we at a crossroads with new announced solid state batteries from Japan that charge in just 10 minutes, lighter and longer range/life!??
I’m a grown up men with SxS experience for many years. I’d like to get a good e dirt bike to cruise around and some gravel roads, what do you recomend me, I,m 5.8 and 54 years old 192 pounds. I love your recomendations..
Solid state is appearing to be the breakthrough. It seems like a winner takes all category and with the huge investment underway I didn’t think it will be too long before ICE’s are relegated. Here’s hoping!
That was great thanks. My question is what would you suggest for a 65 yr old regular on n off road pedal plus battery bike with a very comfortable Seat that has cushion.
Great video, I’m really interested in the Surron for road use. I know this is technically an off road bike, but have people been getting in trouble for riding these on the street?
As long as you have pedals on the bike, its considered an ebike. If you get the version with the pegs then prepared to be pulled over and shunned when you take your bike to the trails.
Depends where you live on how much trouble you run into… but you will FOR SURE run into some form of it if you’re not heeding to your states laws. California has been ruined by SurRonster and all hill kid followers. Now cops see a SurRon and based in visuals alone assume every single one is illegal, when in reality, if you get the fully functioning electronic power pedal kit with cadence sensor, never factory unlock the top speed, have a bike helmet on, and are 16 years or older… it’s a class 3 ebike. It’s unfortunate really. But if you don’t live in California you’ll probably be okay.
Almost no one who gets a Sur Ron just uses it the way it comes. Most Sur Rons end up costing anywhere from $4k to $7K. I know this because I just sold my 2021 for what I paid for it because I did not want to spend another $3000 plus to upgrade it to how I would want it. Fork, rear shock, new controller and battery, better tires and rims...all this just to start!
Amen! I'm in the same boat. Would be willing to pay $12k on a good bike and be done with it. With the sur-ron nothing is good no matter what. I have the best forks and shocks money could buy and still hit jumps like my fork is about to break in 2. Fun to ride but if you want more than a mtb with an electric motor you should consider something else.
Informative review thanks Tucker with good detail. Have you tried the Electric Motion '21 Escape models? In terms of one bike that will cover all your riding needs, the Escape blows the others away in your test, especially the Escape R with mechanical diaphragm clutch.
@Richard Kent Thank you for the note! I have not gotten to ride the 21' EM Escape R yet but I plan on it this year. Should be a great machine! Have you ridden one yet?
Sur Ron was worth it after the 64 tooth sprocket and cutting the looped wire that limits the top speed. Goodness it's fun with only 9 horses. Can't imagine getting a bigger battery/regulator on that fella.
@@ElectricCycleRider haha yep I watched this morning. Very big fan of the work you put in buddy. I am definitely going to be making the upgrades Luna did. First thing is tires and suspension. I have to find one that can handle rocky terrain much better.
Sur ron x would be my choice. Price, 3rd spot on loudness and weight. And it looks good. You’re right about the price. I’m currently saving for a decent mtb, but I catch myself looking at e-dirtbikes instead :) FOCUS, damn you!
Excellent video and overall projection of all your riding experience. Only need to wait for the Sur Ron Bee to come out to see if it beats the Zero FX in the dual sports department!
Great overview, my clunker 2wd 1952 balloon tank bike is 1.2kw and these vids help keep it in perspective. I have front or rear motor cut on a switch. Real vintage ev the old steel frames are really strong. LOL! Bultaco may make good ev mx soon.

Like everyone else here... thanks for sharing. I'm kinda missin' my good ol' KLR at the moment. Not sure about what the best choice for me might be (yet), but I appreciate your review of the electric options. gracias
Great video tucker. Surprised Drill One didn’t rate a mention but it would have had to have knocked the KTM Freeride off it’s perch for best high performance?? How far did you have the drill one behind the Freeride? Given it has 29 foot lbs of torque - was it close? . Love to see you run a head to head on these two bikes - the bigger KTM and lighter Drill one. I know when we get our test Drill one bikes next month in Australia we will be doing that head to head review with Freeride the KTM EXC & Drill One and encouraging ADB mag to do the same... Great viewing once again Tucker. 👍
@Sales EBMX Thanks for the note! The Drill One is super fun and quick and still testing it. The Freeride EX-C is most similar to a full size dirt bike and it feels refined. Hard one to beat right now. I personally like the extra weight of the Freeride from a performance standpoint because it stays planted when the going gets rough and feels so much lighter than an ICE bike when you're riding it. Looking forward to seeing/hearing your comparison and always nice to hear from you! 👍
Great video, one thing I've noticed with most of these bikes is that most do not have a foot brake. That would be a deal breaker for me. Would not want to cross over and brain fart at a hundred plus on my street bike at the wrong time. If it doesn't have pedals I need a foot brake.
Best Buy X260 $3999 with the app which is great can adjust the bike for different riders. My daughter is 12 and already dailed up to the mid range and she is only 65lbs. I am practicing for my KTM 1190 Adventure believe it or not. Added a couple of bar lights and rear brake and signal and put a light on my helmet. Take it out after dark and avoid all the dirty looks and scared angry people. Can go over 20 miles all out hitting 47mph often. Looking to upgrade the battery and controller to hit 60mph and upgrade the brakes and suspension like Tucker said in his other videos!
@paul kitchen Awesome!! What's the weight difference between the X260 and your 1190!? 😂Cool to hear Best Buy dropped the price too. That was definitely a big point of contention for a lot of folks considering Sur Ron or Segway. Another good option for that category for sure. 👍
@@ElectricCycleRider well over 400 lbs difference I calculate especially with the luggage and crash proteciton on the KTM. I need to find time to put on the new Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires on and ease my way into it on the KTM! Last time off road almost 40 years ago. I have a Street Triple RS so I love my stable. Keep up the great videos really appreciate the info!
im intrigued by the mountain bike /dirt bike hybrids like the sur ron x, this is a whole new class of bike. as for the other elec bikes that are trying to emulate a combustion dirt bike i think they have a long way to go and your better off buying a gas bike, for now at least
WELL DONE TUCKER...Since it appears you are the best equipped to answer a question basically nobody in the USA has to date. I'm considering a 2021 EM EPURE SPORT, with the "Progressive Regenerative Brake / Progressive Electronic Switch" on this model vs the RACE do you see a PRO or CON in your opinion? Thanks for your due diligence its very much appreciated 🏁
@Gear Higher That's a great question and thanks for asking. I really preferred the hydraulic clutch on the EM Race because it reacted as a normal clutch does on a gas bike. The PRB/PELS switch on the EM Epure Sport is a cool feature but it feels more like another brake than a clutch, if that makes sense. I found myself not using it as much for that reason. I wouldn't consider it a "Con" for the bike as it is a nice feature, just not as useful to me as the hydraulic clutch was. Hope that helps! 👍

Excellent point about the clutch!
they now have t.k.o. or tick over. em
Nice vid 👍 I want to see more on the upcoming surron storm bee.
Anyone with questions regarding the Cake should check out Mark's website: cakekalk.com/
Tons of first-hand experience and expert opinions there!! ^^^
Thank you very much dude appreciate the true factual reviews of bike that you can actually buy. I love my Sur Ron it’s nice to be able to hit almost all terrain
@EV Rides Awesome man. Thanks for the note! 👍
Love the trials style riding. Got into it when i would take my 1200 vstar classic metric cruiser offroad in the desert. Real slow and carefully picking my path so as not to damage the cruiser. After trying that, i was hooked on slow n difficult riding.
As someone who is very new to even researching anything electric-bike, this was very informative. Thank you!
Honesty with facts behind opinions. I can’t argue with any of the facts that you pointed out. Been on two wheels since the very early 50’s, ride a 16k hard tail now.
@Bob Patty 👍
Great info on Ebikes.Got the Segway x260 and love it. I see 15 to 20 miles on hard riding.Just getting back into riding again from a KTM 300 EXC 15 years ago. I do want to get a 4 stroke by spring for longer rides.
Love my Sur-Ron X!
love the intro when you say we want an actual human being riding and testing and then reviewing it.thanks mate!!
@Shivansh Dev Thank you!
Well Done! This is the video I've been looking for!
@Troy Koch Thanks!
You make really informative and helpful videos - thanks much. Excellent filming and riding too!
Thank you. Very helpful and much appreciated.
Way better video bro! Appreciate seeing an actual human tell us this with experience on the bikes!!
Absolutely flawless review! SUBSCRIBED!
@Matthew Wilmaning 👍👍
Thank you for an EXCELLENT overview of the electric motorcycle market today!!!
Please do an in-depth review of the ZERO FX.
@Craig Horner It's on the way! Thank you!
@@ElectricCycleRider Thanks...I'll be looking forward to it!
@Neal Peters Right on! Sounds like your crew has a great lineup of bikes. Enjoy. 👍
Would you be interested in testinf Vector Vortex ebike? I think you will be surprised by amount of torque and how quiet it is beeing middrive bike. Let me know.
Vector Vortex is a good looking machine. Id like to see more people review it. Do some comparisons
@Vectorebike Very cool. I spoke to Julia a while back about it. Feel free to shoot me an email at electriccyclerider@gmail.com
Don’t forget you can put pedals on the sur-Ron. That’s a huge deal in most states legal wise. They have saved me from the law a bunch of times
Fair comparisons and decent descriptions, it's all about the terrain, the ride...
Man you hit it on the head of the nail! Gotta have a clutch! You rock! Thanks for the review. You helped allot. Thanks!
Fantastic information!!! Thanks for putting together all that information from a riding aspect!!! Aloha!!!!
@Arvel Shults I appreciate the note!
Dang I've been looking for a video like this for awhile. Great job
AWESOME! An actual informed HUMAN BEING reviewing and comparing products! Glad to know these videos still exist, and thank you for the content!
@James Copeland Thank you!
Nice eval/comparison !! Appreciate your sharing your analysis and not just reporting specs and marketing info !!
Great job describing all these different beasts.
Watching from the UK.
Thumbs up and a comment for the YT algorithm.
Subbed too.
@Ryan Thanks for the note and glad to have your sub! 👍
I bought 1 of 10 2015 KTM's freeride E's in Australia. 2 month's ago. I love it. so much fun!
How and where did you get one? Would love one of those, not legal in most states as Australia is ignoring Ebikes to a large extent.
@Johnny O Awesome! Appreciate it 👍👍
Excellent review, it's always nice to hear useful information from someone who actually rides.
Enjoy 👍
Whats best to register and use it for street use. Back and forth to work etc
Totally agree with you on the clutch thing. Have you rode any of the Cake bikes?
@Talon Saloga For sure! I did some riding with one here:

@@ElectricCycleRider Thanks very helpful 😀👍
This is the kind of review I like best. Nice job.
Would love to see you review a Kuberg freerider
@clay boudreaux Working on it!
That 2x2 bike seems like the way forward.
Low noise, no chain, no sprocket. More durable. Less moving parts, sealed, no dust or rock damage.
Very informative and interesting!! Thank you for the feedback. This is helpful.
@Thomas Penny 👍👍
@@ElectricCycleRider thank you bro, really excited to watch. Subbed
@David Mallia I sure hope so! It's promising news. Regardless the outcome, it's cool to see the advancements being made! 👍
I’m a grown up men with SxS experience for many years. I’d like to get a good e dirt bike to cruise around and some gravel roads, what do you recomend me, I,m 5.8 and 54 years old 192 pounds. I love your recomendations..
Thanks for the info and very well done video!
Excellent work, thank you.
Cab Motorworks makes the best electric bikes has motorcycle tires very powerful
Great video, very informative, thanks for sharing.
Great job & great categories
Thanks for the info
Best common sense video out there
@Larry La Bella Thanks for watching!
So excited for what the future holds: more energy density!! Solid state batteries??
Great video! Very interesting and informative video! Thanks again for sharing this video!
@MM Masterscross Appreciate the note!
Love the ktm but it really does need a clutch! My biggest problem with E-bikes is they're not really like real dirt bikes..ie no clutch,no gears etc.
@@RomeoMihalcea Zero Motorcycles!
I totally appreciate this video. Have you done an update by chance? Hope all is well for you in these times.
@Justin For sure! They are a blast. Did you see the Ludicrous XX yet? ruclips.net/video/0WwklBjwmqk/видео.html
@@ElectricCycleRider haha yep I watched this morning. Very big fan of the work you put in buddy. I am definitely going to be making the upgrades Luna did. First thing is tires and suspension. I have to find one that can handle rocky terrain much better.
Justin what motor and battery are you thinking about getting ? I have the sur Ron and I now need more power
@@ptescreen18 this is one I have found.
Quite pricey but such is the price of fun. litespeedbikes.mybigcommerce.com/72v45ah-big-power-surron-battery/
Would love to hear your take on the CAB Motorworks Recon. May be a contender for top quietest.
Nicely done and informative, thanks bud 👍
Sur ron x would be my choice. Price, 3rd spot on loudness and weight. And it looks good. You’re right about the price. I’m currently saving for a decent mtb, but I catch myself looking at e-dirtbikes instead :) FOCUS, damn you!
was the cake kalk considered? just demo-ed one with the ohlins suspension, really fun. but 14k price tag for the street legal version.
Excellent video and overall projection of all your riding experience. Only need to wait for the Sur Ron Bee to come out to see if it beats the Zero FX in the dual sports department!
Thanks for the fantastic information
id like to hear what you think about the delfast top 3.0 since im on the edge of getting that or the sur ron x
Thank you. Great summary.
Legend, cheers brother!!
@Double-O Seven 🙌
Great overview, my clunker 2wd 1952 balloon tank bike is 1.2kw and these vids help keep it in perspective. I have front or rear motor cut on a switch. Real vintage ev the old steel frames are really strong. LOL! Bultaco may make good ev mx soon.
Just viewed this vid!!! Best one so far!!!

Like everyone else here... thanks for sharing. I'm kinda missin' my good ol' KLR at the moment. Not sure about what the best choice for me might be (yet), but I appreciate your review of the electric options. gracias
@bj Appreciate that.
the surron to date 11/25/21 is 4,200 dollers
Thanks for the video 👍
Any thoughts on whether or not these bikes would hold a giant rider? 6’5 300lb?
Specifically Wondering about the Sur Ron.
Very nicely done. Thank you.
@Trent Lyon Thanks!
im intrigued by the mountain bike /dirt bike hybrids like the sur ron x, this is a whole new class of bike. as for the other elec bikes that are trying to emulate a combustion dirt bike i think they have a long way to go and your better off buying a gas bike, for now at least
Really well made video 👌🏼
@@ElectricCycleRiderROGER THAT ....Happy Fathers Day! 🇺🇸
