  • An unofficial demo inspired by ‪@CultureClubOfficial‬'s 3rd studio album. Not an official collaboration. On December 17, 2020, ‪@BoyGeorgeOfficial‬ challenged me to write a poem or song called Waking Up With The House On Fire and he improvised one line (the title), which I used as part of the chorus and wrote the rest of the song around. This is one of 3 versions I wrote originally-the original, slower version. The other 2 are a little faster. The Clone War Mix is reggae and features George singing parts of Clone War, and the Modern Mix has influences from the albums Waking Up With The House On Fire, From Luxury To Heartache, and Life.
    The intro, of course, is taken from George's modified version of the classic poem, printed on The Devil In Sister George.

      @@stevemcilroymusic George said that they had just gotten back from touring ( I cannot remember where ) and the record producer told them ( Culture Club ) that they had to get busy and record another album. They had all been tired from the tour... and that producer told them that. I do not see HOW a record producer could make that kind of a demand!!! If I had been them ( Culture Club ).... I would have said, " NO WAY!!! HOW COULD YOU EXPECT US TO DO THAT?????! "!

      @@debraweaver6308 Yeah, the album WUWTHOF was written and recorded in about 2 weeks they said (then probably a little longer for polish and mastering). Those kinds of demands are always happening, even today. Record labels want their artists to put out music fast so they can stay relevant and make them a lot of money. George even stated back then in interviews they'd release albums yearly because it's easy for the public to forget you if you don't. I like when labels say take your time and allow them 2, 3, even 4 or 5 years to release a new album. And now of course CC is allowed more time-regardless, it's always gold no matter how little or long they spend on something!
      The funny thing is, I know people sometimes give the album a bad rap for being rushed, but for being rushed and it's still an amazing album, it speaks volumes about CC's talent. Better than other albums by other artists that take years to make!
      I'm glad The War Song is getting love again during the recent tours, love the 2 new versions (and now a 3rd new dance version) they've performed. The album was underrated, it's such a good one!

      Hi Ivy! Culture Club didn't write it, actually. There's a link in the description to when I asked George if they ever had and he said no, but he could write one now, and challenged me to write it and he would try and write his version after. So far he hasn't. This is the one I wrote (and I have 2 other versions that are faster and different styles, to be posted later when I get a chance).
      George did improvise the line "Waking up with the house on fire" during my conversation with him, and I used that subtly during the chorus here. But that's as much as he wrote, and I used it as the foundation for the rest of the song.

      @@debraweaver6308 He's supposed to write one, or maybe just a song with that as the end line he said, but so far nothing! He said he'd try, technically. I won't hold him to it of course, but it'd be great if he did. But yeah, he asked me to write one, and I wrote the chorus from the one line he sang during our meeting (ruclips.net/video/ubIgV2aODGc/видео.html), then I wrote the verses around that. I spent a while really refining the lyrics (I wrote more than I actually used), and listening to tons of interviews and reading a lot of stuff from around that time to really write something that was relevant to that time and would be something similar to what he'd write, but also be relevant to now since he's all about living in the present and not the past, and I wanted it to be relevant to myself as well. Hopefully I achieved all those things.
      The funny thing is, some lyrics I wrote (including some I didn't use) I wrote first, and then when I listened to random interviews he said things that were very, very similar to things I had written, which gave me confidence I was writing relevant stuff! Writing like him comes naturally for me, but certain lines I thought were unique to me were even like him without me knowing it! There was one line I took out that was something like
      "The love we shared was always changing
      Like poison into wine"
      And I thought it was unique and didn't want to lose it really, and it was a great description of George and Jon's relationship at the time. But I already had "Ain't no need to say you're sorry with poison on your lips" later in the song and wanted that in but didn't want to repeat the word "poison", and I eventually convinced myself a different line worked better for the previous one. But in a 1984 interview he said "One man's poison is another man's wine. I'm the poison." After I heard that, I really tried to keep my original line in since it was such a perfect coincidence, but ultimately I still removed it. I might use it in a different song though!
      Anyways, a LOT of care was put into every line, I really wanted to do it justice, and really wanted it to sound like a Culture Club song, so hopefully I achieved all that!
      I have the reggae-infused Clone War Mix here if you haven't heard it: ruclips.net/video/5fhVsnXyQOg/видео.html
      And I'm still gonna post the Modern Mix which people seem to like from the instrumental preview I posted a while back, hopefully I'll do that in the next week or two!

    • @SteveMcIlroy
      @SteveMcIlroy 2 года назад +2

      It's a great album!
      To clarify, this is my own song I wrote, and just a demo at that. It features a sample from George that he sang for me during a meet and greet-he improvised the line "Waking up with the house on fire" which I tweaked a little for the chorus and wrote the rest around that one line/melody. He challenged me to write it after I asked if there ever was a demo that was never released (there wasn't), but he said he could write it now, and that I should write a version and he would write one back (he hasn't yet).
      You can watch the video of him improvising the line here: ruclips.net/video/ubIgV2aODGc/видео.html... I used that as a backing vocal during the chorus a bit here for an effect. For the Clone War Mix, I used more of his vocals from that song mixed in, so I'm hoping to upload that in the near future, I think it sounds cool.
      This is the roughest demo I did, but there was a feel to it that I liked, so it's not perfect and I want to polish it more, I just wanted to get it out there on his birthday at least. The other 2 are more polished, and a bit faster (one is a bit reggae and one is sort of funk).
      I wrote it based on George and Jon but also other things George was sort of writing or talking about at the time, based on a lot of interviews and whatnot. It was important to me to do it justice, don't know if I did but I gave it a ton of thought!

    • @brians3987

      @@SteveMcIlroy very interesting info! Thanks for the reply. I had the same thought because he always had songs that were the title of the record such as colour by numbers and kissing to be clever and and also From luxury to heartache! They never seemed to make it on the albums though! But my favorite album is the third one it was jazzy and stuff. I thought it was a better album that what they thought it was.

    • @SteveMcIlroy
      @SteveMcIlroy 2 года назад +3

      @@brians3987 Yeah I love the 3rd album and don't get why it doesn't get more love. I know they said it was rushed but it's such a great album and still better than 99.999% of anything else then or now. It was the first album I ever bought with my own money as a kid and every song is perfect. I was hesitant to write it because I didn't want to ruin something so great and I really wanted to write it with him, but I ended up writing a bunch of lyrics and had to cut some that I really liked to get it to a "regular" song. But I still hope he writes a version too and see what his take would be on it.
      You can check out sneak peeks at the other two versions I did here-they're more in line with what may have been the sound at the time. The Modern Mix is a cross of Waking Up and Luxury vibes (since it would have been released between those two albums had it been real), with a touch of CC today. I kept in mind that almost every title track wasn't really how you might think it would be, so I went for a vibe that was NOT inspired by the cover art for those.
