  • An unofficial demo inspired by ‪@CultureClubOfficial‬'s 3rd studio album. Not an official collaboration. On December 17, 2020, ‪@BoyGeorgeOfficial‬ challenged me to write a poem or song called Waking Up With The House On Fire and he improvised one line (the title), which I used as part of the chorus and wrote the rest of the song around. This is one of 3 versions I wrote originally-a reggae version featuring George singing parts of Clone War. The others are the Original Dub Mix and the Modern Mix.
Listen to George sing the improvised "Waking up with the house on fire" line here:

It's probably obvious, but in case it's not, George's parts (from 1984) are:
    - The intro (singing "How can you start a revolution when the revolution's holding hands")
    - The bridge (singing "Clone war" and speaking "Clone war")
    - The 2nd bridge-style bit at the end (speaking the "Me I lift and/to separate, they are only surrogate" lines)

This is really a gem. This got the style of George and CC. And your voice is beautiful. It's like I'm actually listening to something from the WUTHOF album. Amazing work.

Thank you so much, glad you like it! I was hesitant to release these since I always keep my stuff very private but people seem to like them so far, so maybe it's time to give my songs some proper treatment and get them out there!

Great voice and a bit similar to G's young voice 🙂, I love your track, and the lyrics also very early CC. Well done 👏👏👏

Thanks! Fun fact: for this version I would sing a few lines of Dangerous Man first to get the vibe I wanted. 😁
George's voice is still a million times better than I could ever hope for though!

      Thanks so much!
I do have the 3rd version (Modern Mix) that I'm about ready to upload soon-ish (sneak peek in the description above) but just need a little polish on it. I also want to do a Dance Mix as well. And I have a mix of Clone War that's similar to this with George on vocals and me singing the few extra lines that are missing, and that's a nice, catchy song. So look for those in the near future!
There's one more CC album title that never became a song, and I've been working on a little something for that but not sure on that just yet. George didn't ask me to write that one, but I'm sure he _won't mind if I do_. 😉
Then there's my own stuff, lots of songs I've written over the years (several albums worth), but they need to be properly recorded and music written for them so those are a ways off but I do have a couple that are near finished. You can hear a sneak peek of a new one I wrote here: ruclips.net/video/-c-_UkxtsKQ/видео.html.

It's not George singing the entire song, I stated in the pinned comment above which parts are his, taken from a 1984 interview where he sang bits of Clone War.

I like this version, although I prefer the original one. If I may criticise, they both sound like something CC might include on KTBC, not on WUWTHOF. PERHAPS you think of 'The Dive' when thinking about a new remix to this song. :-)

      Thanks!
I went reggae with this version because I was messing around with trying to put together some kind of form of Clone War from the bits and pieces he's sang or spoken or written and it happened that reggae went really well with it. I was just going to do a dance mix since there's not a whole lot, but loved the reggae with it, so I went with that even though the original probably wasn't reggae. Then I found that worked really well with WUWTHOF when combined. And that's how this version came about. And yes, a few hints of KTBC were intentional 😁
But I think the 3rd version (the Modern Mix) is more what you're suggesting. It definitely was inspired by The Dive as well as From Luxury To Heartache and a bit of the Life album's vibe. The Original Dub mix was based on wanting it to have a tribal feel, to pay tribute to the album's cover art, and it definitely had a KTBC feel because of it. (It's also supposed to be a tad faster but I didn't have time to redo it in time for George's birthday!) Then I decided it shouldn't be so literal and I wanted it to be something that sounded like it was between WUWTHOF and FLTH since had it been released as a song, it would have likely been written/recorded between those two albums, and would have likely had influences of both as they transitioned to a different sound for FLTH.
I also didn't want it to sound like something you might expect-I don't know about you, but KTBC, CBN, and FLTH didn't sound like what I expected them to sound like (not that that's a bad thing!) And it was also important to make it slightly modern as well, since George isn't huge on nostalgia and I wanted to capture his style now, too (since he said he would try to write a version too and I figured I'd try for a hint of something he would write today).
I'm hoping to put the final touches on the Modern Mix and upload it in the near future. You can listen to the sneak peek of an instrumental version here:

@@stevemcilroymusic Wow! What a comprehensive reply!! I loved it!!
Thanks for all the info on how you chose the particular sounds to go with the song. The simple fact that you actually wrote the song is a huge plus, whatever genre it may be.
I can't wait for the third mix.
Congratulations on your work and I hope you do finish writing the DMIID track!
      Take care, my friend!
