Bush explained in a 1985 interview: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem." This is so beautiful ❤

Agreed. This technology shit ruined my generation. Not saying artist from today don’t make good songs, but all they talk about is drugs, violence, lust, boasting, etc. I like their Melodie’s and flows but lyrics are so obscene and trivial. The 80s were so creative.

It is so gratifying to see a whole new generation of people discover Kate Bush. When I was in high school, a friend played me a cassette tape (hey, it was 1978) of her first album, "The Kick Inside". By the time "Hounds of Love" came out, I was a huge fan. As someone on here commented, it's strange that in the 1980s, many considered her songs and videos to be weird, but now, they make perfect sense. Guess that's one definition of being ahead of one's time.
Love your story!! I also think its great too because i'm young and my parents didn't even know of her music until I told them about her after watching stranger things! so cool how music moves!
This is one of those songs I've heard as a kid growing up but never really knowing the artist nor the lyrics to the entire song but I'm glad Stranger Things could provide the nostalgia for me to realize what the title and artists name.was.
It’s kind of awesome that Stranger Things being set in the 80’s has made that era of music popular again for a new generation. I’m 19 and I can honestly say I would have never discovered this song or many others that have now become some of my favorites had it not been for that show.
I hear this song and get this "Home Sick" feeling in my heart for back then. Recently heard this song in the Lifetime movie about Elizabeth Smart. Got the chills!
Finally the queen is getting recognition again! This song is my dad’s favourite song and it made me smile hearing it again. Her voice is unlike anything!
My friend of 4 years tragically passed away back in August at the age of 19 after being hit by a car. The day I found out he went braindead, I had never felt so alone in my life. The next day, our whole friend group went to visit him in the hospital. He was being kept alive by machines, but I knew he was no longer there. I had a weird guilt wash over me. We ended up going to Applebee's after, and the group banter was lively like nothing had happened and all I could think about was the friend we all just lost. I remember I had to go to the bathroom to collect myself and heard this song playing. Specifically the part at 2:37 was playing. It stuck with me. In that moment all I could think about was what it would be if we swapped places and he had lived. I try not to think about it but this song brings me a melancholic comfort now when I listen to it. I miss him and if given the chance, would swap out places in a heartbeat. But I can't, and so I miss him. But I consider myself lucky to have someone that mattered so much to me that the loss effected me so heavily.
It’s up for interpretation but Kate said herself it was about stepping into the other genders position and the understanding that would come from that.
@@s.w.0.3 Right that is what Kate intended, it definitely can apply to someone to experiencing deep depression from survivor's guilt as well like in Max's case on Stranger Things.
Perfect example of why older classics should be used in modern TV shows and movies. So many people hadn't heard this song and it made it popular for a second time for a whole new generation.
I had never even heard of Kate Bush before this song featured so well on Stranger Things. Now I am a big fan. Amazing voice and very interesting songs.

She’s a musical genius. One of the best female artists of all time I was born in 1992. My Dad got me into her. The Man with her Child in his Eyes is one of my favourite singers ever. I see a lot of her in Billie Eilish. Breaking music conventions, changing what it is to be a female artist. With Billie Eilish’s vocal range and emotion in her voice at 18, I’d love her to do a cover of Kate Bush.
I remember this song when I was a kid back in the 80’s. Listening to it again in the 4th epic episode of ST, was like a punch in the stomach that brought me back to my childhood and it is just perfect for that scene. I can’t stop rewatching episode 4.

@Javier Antonio Nope. Only us teenagers and our music tastes exist. This song didn't matter and wasn't popular or relevant to anyone until our generation finally listened to it. Other generations didn't have or make songs popular like we do.
So happy to see so many people coming from Stranger Things and giving that song the love it deserves… Kate Bush is truly a classic for her timelessness… her music is always gripping and powerful and so many coming here now is a testimony to that!

I was 8 in 1985. I have an older sister and two older brother's and got much of my musical taste from them. One brother past away jan 2022 at 51 from cancer. Music is so great it helps keep us going..
For those of you just discovering Kate you might like to look up and listen to a worthy live performance of this song. Look up "'Running Up That Hill' - Julia Henning: Live at the Sydney Opera House" on youtube. Best wishes.
As a drummer this song does my head in… in a FANTASTIC way. The vocals don’t follow the usual pop-rhythmic conventions; they have their own beautiful, “non-sensical” logic. They’re pure ballet. A work of genius. ❤
This song wasn’t overlooked at all. It’s always been considered Kate Bush’s best song and entered the Rolling Stones’ Top 500 songs the year before it was in Stranger Things
@@ste9281 It tends to be a dual between this & Wuthering Heights. I looked up a dozen or so Kate Bush top hits compilations (which are often quite silly), but those two always were changing places. But those "Best of" lists normally only deal in hit songs. This song is undeniably #1 when it comes to sales. But when you look at all of her albums & releases and you're a big fan, then it's almost impossible to choose a #1 song. It's hard to be objective & choose a best song of hers. There are so many brilliant songs that might qualify. And you're right. It was never overlooked. This album even knocked Madonna off the number 1 spot in the UK. The single reached #3. But, "The Rolling Stone", which used to be really good in the 70s and 80s, is not taken very seriously anymore. They keep changing their top hits based on current listeners & trends. The last one was in 2004 and Running Up That Hill was not on it (nor any other hit of hers).
If you're just discovering this queen, please also check out Cloudbusting, Wuthering Heights, This Woman's Work (Maxwell also does a great cover of this) and her entire album Hounds of Love! You won't regret it!
Kate Bush - a true, original artist who Sia, Lady Gaga, Florence and the Machine, Tori Amos and numerous others owe a lot to for inspiration ! I have loved Kate Bush for over 30 years and still find her amazing and relevant.
Without you saying much, I know for sure you're underestimating Lady Gaga. Listen to her acoustic lives (like Speechless, You and I), and stuff like her Sound of Music tribute and be prepared to have your jaw drop.
I remember hearing this song on 91X in San Diego back in the 80s and thinking how amazing it is. I still think it's amazing even after all these years.
37 years later this song hits it big. But don’t worry: Kate Bush is already worth a decent chunk of change. She owns the masters to this song for example. She made 2.5 million from Netflix alone. I’m 36 and had NO idea this song was as old as it was until I first went to download it 2 years ago. From the first time I heard this song I felt deeply emotional about the lyrics. As I had applied them to my own life at the time. However now having read Kate Bush’s explanation of what this son’s means it now has a more powerful emotional meaning. To change places with the person you love, making a deal with God, and seeing things through their eyes walking in their shoes, feeling their feelings: well that could bring a couple much closer together. No matter how much we explain how we feel and think to actually feel it would be something else. Something unfortunately unattainable. But it’s amazing to think about let alone make a song about.
Kate was already rich, she's just richier. Thank. Cough cough cough : she wrote all the songs, composed all the music of her discography, and since 1980 is a PRODUCER. In 2014, during her residency, 8 of her albums re-entered uk chart.... According to the House Company, in Dec 2023 she earned 8 million with ruthill. Netflix did not paid her, but the producers of Strange sthing did......... It's the only song used by the show in 4 seasons to re-entered charts around the world at n °1, and n °3 at the Billboard. Nov 2024, it got more than a 1 billion streams. Thanks. Her last TV appearance was in 1993. She just does a career from her home. Believe it or not but before Strange sthing, they were people who knew about her.

For me Kate's most mesmerizing dance is in a grassy field doing Cathy's ghost dance in 'Wuthering Heights'. In a few sequences Kate mimes Cathy's hands against the window glass. She is one-of-a-kind. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem."

I was an 80’s teenager. Born at the perfect time in music history 1968. GenX the best!

I think it is very important too remember that Kate Bush wrote the song for everybody. Just because you listened to it 30 years before somebody else doesn't make you the writer of it. Enjoy the music share the music to the Max! Otherwise your opinion is upside down.
Brilliant Kate is getting recognition on Stranger things 4! Hounds Of Love is a fantastic album I bought on cassette back '85. I'm 50 this year and it takes me back to my youth! Love the 80s!

The more I watch this video, the more I appreciate Kate Bush’s dancing skills. Timeless.
For me Kate's most mesmerizing dance is in a grassy field doing Cathy's ghost dance in 'Wuthering Heights'. In a few sequences Kate mimes Cathy's hands against the window glass. She is one-of-a-kind. Flash mobs around the world mimic Kate's dance around hers, and Emily Brontë's birthday. The video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/Fk-4lXLM34g/видео.html

As a dance Mom I have barely seen a person remark on Kate and the male’s ability to provide such a beautiful, passionate, heartfelt and wrenching dance! She danced in this! I don’t know if she had prior dance training but the physical video is miraculous ❤
Defining yourself as a dance mom is pretty pathetic. It gives you no more authority to judge dancing than anyone else.

Yes!!!!🤍🙌🙌
It was, i was a teenager then as well. How time flies.
The 80s was a decade of originality and flair. Kate Bush was the most arty of all artists and embodied the strife and creativity of that time. I have many of her albums.
I don't get it. To me this is an instantly forgettable song. The nelody is barely discernable and you can't even understand most of the lyrics. I guess it's because I'm used to listening to the songs of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern, and Harold Arlen.
Wish I was born in your era🥲
