  • On December 17, 2020, ‪@BoyGeorgeOfficial‬ challenged me to write a poem or song called Waking Up With The House On Fire and he improvised one line (the title), which I used as part of the chorus and wrote the rest of the song around. He said he may also write a version, so let's hope he does!

Very cute. An actual song called "Waking Up With The House On Fire". If it can actually be written as a song George is the person that can do it, hands down. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Funnily enough, the titles tracks were never included on the actual albums (except for 'life'). In some cases (From Luxury To Heartache), the missing song is actually better than some songs that actually made it on the album.

I always liked that the title tracks weren't on the album. It made them stand out and be more unique, somewhat mysterious, and a nice surprise find when you discovered them as a B-side. It also made the album title seem stronger in a sense, since no song was called that on the album.
I think the title tracks were always written after the album released, though (K2BC may have been the exception). I think each album had perfect tracklists, I don't know if I'd trade any for the title tracks, even though they're all great. CBN is probably the strongest album--worthy track but to swap out any other song for it would be a crime! And I kinda liked each album having 10 songs, of course you want more but 10 was a nice sweet spot.
By the way, I've been sitting on "Don't Mind If I Do" for almost a year. I've been meaning to upload it but just am being a perfectionist. Hopefully soon though. I think I've done it justice. A catchy reggae song that sounds very BG/CC-ish and reminiscent of their 1998-1999 vibe. Keep an eye/ear out!

@@stevemcilroymusic I totally understand what you mean when you write that having no track naming the album actually makes it seem stronger as a whole... I agree with you. When you hear a title track and you don't like it, it automatically makes you think the entire album is bad. Or, if you like it, that it's the best song and the rest is just album filler.
I find it interesting that KTBC is a song from the KTBC era, but the verse KTBC was also used on Miss Me Blind on the CBN era...
In fact, repeating verses wasn't entirelly new to CC... Both COTPM and KC open up with 'desolate loving in your eyes''
Back in the vinyl days, albums usually had 10 tracks. It was standard and I got used to it.
If I could change songs, It'd be ''victims'' for the title track on CBN. It'd save ''victims'' for athe soundtrack of a film. If they'd been asked to provide the music for a film, it'd have been a great choice.
I can't wait to hear your DMIID!

@@JCesar-xf2bk Actually, it's "Desolate loving in your eyes" for Church and "Desert loving in your eyes" for Karma. Probably at some point it was the same line and he changed it to be a little different, or at the very least one's opening line inspired the next (Church most likely inspired Karma since I think that's the order they were written). When I was a kid and first heard them, before I ever read the lyrics, I always thought both were "There's a loving in your eyes" (many did and still think that's what it is!)-complete opposite of the meaning, lol.
I always loved Miss Me Blind having the "kissing to be clever" line in it, thought it was a fun little Easter egg and nod to the previous album. And while I absolutely love the song and beginning to end the album is gold (and red and green-badum-psh!), if I HAD to pick a least favorite on the album, that would probably be it, but it's hard to say that because I love it for that line alone! Even when it's played live, I'd rather they play something else but then I love it when they get to that part and he sings it live.
Here's a sneak peek at an earlier, rough demo version of Don't Mind If I Do... x.com/smcilroymusic/status/1673418957200703488?s=20
I wanted to release either it or the WUWTHOF (Modern mix) today for Mikey's birthday but that isn't likely but hopefully sometime this month at least.

@@stevemcilroymusic True! That's the original verse: DESOLATE, not desperate!
I love MMB and wish itd been released in the UK. It'd have easily been another #3 for them. If not, another #1!
I like your DMIID... To me, it's a dfficult album to be inspired by because I think it's CC's worst effort. I don't care for most of the tracks, especially ''black comedy''... That said, I DO worship ''cold shoulder'' and ''see thru''... CS is one of my absolute favourite ballads ever recorded by them.

@@JCesar-xf2bk I love DMIID. Should have gotten so much more love than it did. If you like See Thru, I have a nod to that in the song :D
      twitter.com/desidus/status/1759669998040285558/photo/1
That verse was inspired by the theme of the movie Some Like It Hot (which the album got its name from-Marilyn Monroe's line in it from the champagne scene) and a line between Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon's characters when they're trying to escape from the mobsters, then by See Thru. And while it wasn't an intentional nod to Strange Voodoo, the word "voodoo" being used ended up working for that reason.

Thanks for this! Is there anywhere I can hear Fireboy? And do you have the full video of this interview?

    • @stevemcilroymusic
      @stevemcilroymusic  6 месяцев назад

I have the full video but it's my Virtual Meet and Greet so it's not really an interview per se. I probably won't upload it in full 'cause it's more of a personal experience that's for each meet-and-greet attendee. Nothing confidential or anything but also just feels weird to put out a private meet and greet thing for everyone to watch, lol. But I know I would like to see others' as well, so maybe... we'll see.
You CAN watch a little bit of the end here, where one of my cats (Palom) video-bombed me and met George too! ruclips.net/video/taAQUjXVBzc/видео.html
As for Fireboy, you're talking about Fireboy Meets His Match or my demo of Waking Up With The House On Fire? A couple demos I did are on my channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCAxjY0LgNMef6A3OfnRVS9Q (I'm planning on eventually redoing them and I also have a few more mixes to eventually post).
If you're talking about the old 80's song that George sang, you can find that here: ruclips.net/video/-_k4IyQpw8Y/видео.html

Hi! I manually added English captions and then translated them into French. Hopefully the French translation is accurate. There's one part I'm not quite sure what he says when he talks about the Spice Girls singing it. I'll paste the English and French text here as well:
Salut!
      __________
      ENGLISH:
      __________
Steve: One question I always had was just, um, a lot of the albums had songs either named after them or maybe the albums were named after the songs, but, uh, did Waking Up With The House On Fire ever have a... a song that it was supposed to be, or-
George: You see, that's something that could happen now, because I'm a little bit more open to-"ooh, I could write a song about that." You know, I-I make jokes about all that all the time, like I say to everyone around me whenever everyone says you know, so "write that down because it could be useful".
      Steve: Right
George: So yeah, maybe I'll write a song, Waking Up With The House On Fire-it doesn't... I'd say straight off the top of my head, it doesn't ring...
      Steve: Right
George: It doesn't feel like it would- (sings: "♫ Waking up with the house on fire! ♪") You probably could! Maybe I could recruit, like, the Spice Girls to do this sort of [unintelligible] version or something.
      Steve: Nice!
George: But I'll-I'll bear it in mind. Maybe it could be the end line of a song. You've sent me a challenge now.
      Steve: Nice.
George: Maybe we could both write a poem called Waking Up With The House On Fire.
      Steve: Yeah, that'd be awesome!
George: And then post it. Do you follow me on Twitter?
Steve: Oh yeah, definitely. Yeah, you-you retweeted me once and that was-
George Then let's have-let's have a poem-off. I'll think of something, I'll try to see if I can write a poem...

      Steeve : D'accord
George : Alors oui, peut-être que j'écrirai une chanson, Waking Up With The House On Fire, ça ne... je dirais tout de suite, ça ne sonne pas...
      Steeve : D'accord
Up With The House On Fire.
Steve : Ouais, ce serait génial !

I've posted 2 versions of the demo I wrote after this conversation where he asked me to write something, with the 3rd I'll post in the near future. Are you thinking of that? The kinda-sorta-closest song would be Fireboy, but not really. According to him, there was never a planned song or demo written for it. He said he would write a version after I shared mine, but nothing yet! Still hoping!
