This may be THE MOST eye opening video I have ever seen. I could almost cry, because for the past 15 years I have searched for answers to fix my early extension. This is the first time I have understood what I am doing wrong, how to fix it, and can immediately feel a difference and the right way it should be done. Every other fix was how to cure early extension with drills or gimmicks with the takeaway or downswing. By curing the root cause of the early extension (anterior pelvic tilt), and educating on why it happens, I can literally feel a night and day difference in setup, swing, and impact. Instead of just saying "Shift weight forward toward toes" or "stand closer to the ball" or "Keep hips over heels", Jonathan explains my specific deficiency with hips (that many struggle with), and how to overcome it with practice and feels. Thank you Jonathan.
He is amazing. I feel so lucky to see this video. This answer why when I play with my coach I don’t have this problem but when I practice alone, I have this all the time. This video is valuable. Thanks to him for made this video and thank you @abosweiler to explain this feeling
Few things to add… I just thumbs up to existing comments. Excellent communicator; no wasted words. Succinct, direct, great word choices & golf terminology
There's a reason why you have over 100K subscribers. I watch a lot of golf instructional vids and your content is well thought out and very insightful. My game has improved because of your stuff. Thanks.
Wow this is exactly what I need to fix. I knew I was moving forward and standing up, but didn't realize my posture/setup was so off. Great video, subscribed.
Holy hell this is the clearest explanation of things I've come across. Finally. Your "Hands High" to avoid thinning the golf ball literally saved me 4 strokes on the course yesterday.
Listen up people. This is really good stuff. For so long I ignored my posture as I thought it was good. As a result, I continued to fight early extension. It was only when I really worked on the setup as you have explained in this video did I start to see changes that lasted. Ball striking is much more pure now.
This is such a great detailed video. Never knew why I always stand up & end up on my toes & off balace until I saw your explanation. Simple posture adjustment but it also shows how important it is to video you swing as feel is not always real. Great instruction!
This drill was amazing and there was an immediate improvement - thankyou so much! Best early extension drill I've come across because it actually worked!
Great video. I have.had early extension for many years and couldn't figure out how to stop. Didn't realize it was in set up which means I had to stand up to hit ball we!!. Addressing more upright. and closer to ball forces me to push hip back instead of in to make good. contact. and less thin shots. On range easier with irons than driver so far
Thank you for the tip. It really help me improve my striking for early extension and early release. I won't have thought before this video key for correction is put more weight at the toe at the setup to allow falling back during swing.
Thank you Jonathan, keep up the good work. What distinguishes you from other RUclips Coaches is that you really talk about the most common mistakes in posture and ball strike and talk about how to correct them.
Hi Jonathan, I have watched so many training videos and I can undoubtedly say thats yours is the best of all. They way you explain, demonstrate with texts and signs. In fact, your videos helped me to recover from a hopeless swing to almost 90% success. So that it brought mw back to the game. Thanks very much indeed.
Excellant tutorial, no wonder i kept falling forward whenever i swing. I just couldnt understand it and this video fixed all that...and I always had question how far should my hands be from my thighs. Thanks again. Your videos are all excellant.
I can't stress how important hip position is. After 2 years of learning golf on RUclips, this tuck hip position is definitely a eureka moment. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this tip. I've never been able to figure out why I can't get rid of my early extension and end up shanking the ball because my hands get away from my body as well. Excited to give this a try!
I've been setting up to the golf ball with the head beyond the ball for the past 5 years, I always felt it encouraged me to do just what you were talking about. Brilliant stuff.
Have always struggled with pushed shots or duck hooks and when I took a video of my swing could see early extension and not maintaining spine angle. Thanks for very clear explaination Jonathan. Hopefully will eventually stop me from hitting my first tee shot onto the beach !
I've had this issue for a long time now, and I finally got the feel of consistent post impact extension yesterday thanks to your videos and about a week of trying different things. Ty so much! Ps would love to see a short game series
I've had early extension for a while. I think for me it's more a symptom of / attempt to compensate for something else. For me i get bowed in my left wrist at top of backswing so as i start down i feel like my clubface is very closed, and so i think my early extension is an attempt to save the pull hook by forcing swing path outwards. I've got some new ideas I'm working on but if they don't completely remedy the early extension it's good to have these ideas and feels to bring into it as well.
Thanks JKM! Am a 4h/c and this EE vid helped me most out of any I watched. You think there is much of a power gain to be had by staying in posture gor longer?
Could you plz do a video where u show how the right arm should look at impact and after? I can keep my trail arm to fall through but I keep getting an open face at impact.
This is me 😝. My problem is I can’t delay the handle till passes the belt buckle at the impact. If we hit the ball too early our body senses that the distance from the body to the ball is too short then it has to stand up in order not to hit behind the ball, I think this is one of the reason for early extension. Correct me if I’m wrong 😆 thanks
So when I start my downswing I drop my head and then to make space, my head pulls away from the ball (no longer on same vertical plane as takeaway and setup). This puts a lot of stress on my back but I have been fighting early extension for years and this where I'm at now. I'll give your drill a shot but I've tried alot of various moves/drills and feel like I need to remove the head drop but the drop is what creates power in the swing.
Hello Jonathan! Would you be so kind as to confirm something no one talks about: Should the grip on contact be firm or relaxed. I understand the wrist will normally rotated, but what about the club handle within the hand - should that be locked firm at point of contact or also kept relaxed. A tight grip seems to help through divot contact but...? Thoughts? Is the overall swing = lag + relaxed momentum of the club through contact + relaxed grip or is it lag + muscle through impact + firm grip?
Im a complete beginner and am confused about which foot is the lead foot and which the trail foot! Could you just say right and left, it would be easier to follow? Thanks for this, my posture is allover the place atm and if I can grasp this I’m sure it will really help. 😃
One more: I hear from many that the path of the iron should normally be inside out which can give one a nice draw. In this video you show "the falling away" transition which seems to promote a direct or right to left club path. How does one get draw shape while also using your recommended transition?
If you already go right, this is likely not for you. Early extension usually results in big hooks or blocks right. This swing correction improves club path to ball for the hookers
OMFG....Just tried this and shot my lowest score with several birdies. I struggled with a snap/duck hook and hitting behind the ball, even with the driver. Thought it was a grip issue, turns out it was early extension. Like in the video just shifted my weight to my heel in the back swing and that was it. I went from driving max 250 to 270 with one going 285, plus added 10-15 yards with each iron. When it's 135 to the pin and you fly the green with an 8 iron as an amateur, definitely means it's working...
Will this drill be effective / work with driver also? For some reason the only club I struggle with EE with is driver and it causes spinny heel strikes
Would that work equally well for a low handicapper who’s is a good ball striker but struggles occasionally getting stuck causing the push draw to turn into a pull draw due to a flip?
Yes. You prob have awesome coordination to be at your handicap w early extension and flipping. This will carve out a swing path that does not rely on timing for success. Your margin of error will go way down and willing to bet you’ll eliminate the big hooks ob left
I think the golf instructors need to becareful what remedy to give to which golfer and the golfer needs to understand that these drills aren't a one size fits all approach. You can confuse yourself with something that pretty much isn't meant for you. I love the drill if I might add. Have used it myself since a young age to prevent coming over the top especially when I am setup for a fade.
Unless you solve the reason you early extend you will never get rid of it. Golfers early extend because they have to in order to hit the ball remotely towards the target. So solve the swing issue that causes the early extension and it will improve itself. Early extension is not the swing fault.
In my opinion it is cause by lead hip rotating in the downswing without the weight being transferred from trail foot into lead foot. Beginners hear pros talk about clearing the hips for power but aren't told about the importance of feet movement to encourage the hips to power through at impact. This is a common case of getting the "cart before the horse" or better yet in this case getting the hips moving before the feet.
I figured this out the other week playing around at the range. I’ve always early extended and have been told to have an athletic stance. This was the only thing that has worked to work towards fixing my EE

Is the hands high to avoid thinning in a different video?
Listen up people. This is really good stuff. For so long I ignored my posture as I thought it was good. As a result, I continued to fight early extension. It was only when I really worked on the setup as you have explained in this video did I start to see changes that lasted. Ball striking is much more pure now.
You seriously address different issues that aren’t the standard YT drills. Every problem I have in my swing, you fix. Thank you so much
My major issue. Really like the visuals.
Absolutely one of the best teachers out there thanks again JKM
This is such a great detailed video. Never knew why I always stand up & end up on my toes & off balace until I saw your explanation. Simple posture adjustment but it also shows how important it is to video you swing as feel is not always real. Great instruction!
This is by far one of the best video on EE and its main root cause 🎯!
This drill was amazing and there was an immediate improvement - thankyou so much! Best early extension drill I've come across because it actually worked!

Bravo!!!!! C’est ce que je dois travailler!!!! Merci Monsieur!!! 👍
Thank you for the tip. It really help me improve my striking for early extension and early release. I won't have thought before this video key for correction is put more weight at the toe at the setup to allow falling back during swing.
Wow. I was always told to setup like this, but was never told the reason why. Thank you for giving me the reason. Awesome
This is one of the most informative instruction videos I've come across. Thank you for sharing!
You have a great attitude for teaching. Keep up the good work, looking forward to improving my game with your knowledge and teaching delivery.
Excellent explanation and demonstration.
Thank you Jonathan, keep up the good work. What distinguishes you from other RUclips Coaches is that you really talk about the most common mistakes in posture and ball strike and talk about how to correct them.
Great analysis, great drill. Thanks a lot

Was going to the range today so tried this. Was hitting them FLUSH! didn’t realise I moved towards the ball so much.
I can't stress how important hip position is. After 2 years of learning golf on RUclips, this tuck hip position is definitely a eureka moment. Thank you!

I think you nailed it!!! This describes my issue and especially on iron shots. Your knowledge and explanation are tops. Please come to New York!!!!
Great lessons! The reason for early extension is really comming to mind, and your tips for correcting it are to be great help.
Feet balls, butt line, this video has it all. Gonna test all this next time at the range. Good stuff!
That's such a great drill man. Fair play
Good video and clear instruction. Subscribed. Feeling the opposite to fix a problem is always good advice.
Thanks!! This is exact what my mistake is (it came from doing squarts I think). will try correcting it next time in the range!
This is a great video Jonathan. I have always struggled with this. Great to watch. Now time to work!
This may be the solution to my problem! Thank you
I like your theory and will look forward to hearing more from you in the near future
I'm a 8.1handicap and still struggling with this, perfect timing with the video. Thank you.
I can tell you are another fellow Garmin user XD
@@beckmanchilds756 how's that?
Thank u great drill... Will definitely try it.
Have always struggled with pushed shots or duck hooks and when I took a video of my swing could see early extension and not maintaining spine angle. Thanks for very clear explaination Jonathan. Hopefully will eventually stop me from hitting my first tee shot onto the beach !
Very well explained. Thank you.
Great approach to early extension! Thank you!
What a great video! Thanks so much!!

Ps would love to see a short game series
Answers many questions i had about early extension 👍
Glad to hear that!
Good video. I am going to try that drill.
Great drill!!! Going to give it a try.
Nicely done. Thanks
Thanks so much! Trying this tomorow. I think that my early extention also makes me feel stuck in the downswing because my legs rise to early.
Wow, extremely well spoken and a great new drill I have not seen before. Subbed!
Excellent tips. Please provide video from the front to help with hips, legs, and arm position.
Love the new setup!
Thank you but this is a temporary location 😏
Helped heaps thanks man
This is so good for ME!!!
how about the takeaway in the driver. how much do you focus on keeping your elbow down and in, and how much do you set your wrist?
Enjoyed the video

If you are a right handed player the lead foot would be your left foot and the trail foot is your right foot 👍
very good.
Pretty good drill. My most bad habbit that I want to change. But I can't control my body.

yes this will definitely help with all clubs if you are struggling with early extension
Cool! 😊
Subscribed.
What about the driver or long iron, standing straight up tends ground more. Please HELP JKM!
Will have to see your swing to know what your tendencies are

Can we get more on course vlogs ❤ Thanks 🙏🏽❤️
Stay tuned haha
Would this be the same for a driver vs an iron
Yes
Hitting GIR lately. RUclips short idea: how to do a proper club twirl?
Jonathan, do you do video lessons? Can I DM you?

👍
My back doesnt actually extend early. My trail knee goes forward, my trail foot lifts and my upper back hunches down
👍🤙💯💪👊
Your butt line doesn't move backwards. Is it just a feeling that it does?
Yes it’s just a feeling. Feel vs real is different
Even when you demonstate the wrong motion and hit the ball, somehow you hit the ball flush. 😂
ok. i will try to move away from the ball
I paid a coach $99 to tell me these exact tips :(
A game of opposites.
thank god for this video
