Super helpful. As someone who lifts trail heel too early in downswing, other drills didn’t work (path become ugly, etc.). Simple way of practicing. Thanks, Eric.
Glad this one helps, Steve!
I've tried a lot of different feels to try to fix my early hip extension (without success) and I was almost resigned to it being a permanent part of my swing, but this video has immediately changed that. Even better than just trying to drive the right knee directly towards the left knee (ie not crossing the toeline), I'm also keeping the right knee low and feeling like my right heel stays on the ground for longer. With that, I'm puring my 8 iron more consistently than I've ever been able to in the past 25 years! Thanks so much!
Love those feels!! I have lots of students fix this with very similar feels---good ones!!
43 year old 6 handicapper irl here. I’ve always just played by feel and never analyzed my swing on video or anything. Took the deep dive this year as I’m getting older and committed to be as good a player as possible. Always struck the ball pretty good with good distance but realized I’d been practicing early extension for more than 2 decades.
Dudes, I’ve watched many dozens of vids trying to fix coming out of posture. Been hitting daily for 3 months and had more than started to give up hope. Watched this one yesterday- went and tried it today- AND was able to stay down!! I almost felt like crying lol. F-ing golf.
Didn’t need to use the foot ball but just keeping that trail leg almost straight from the top kept it from moving out towards the ball so my arms had room. After 60 or so swings I shot my best round yet in our sim league. It’s not totally fixed quite yet but I’m sincerely confident it won’t be long before the flaw is history. Can’t wait for winter to be over. Thank you!
Sorry, watched it this morning- not yesterday. Who cares, it did the trick
Hell yeah!! Love it!! Appreciate you being here with us!
Dude, if you're a 6 at 43 years old, there's nothing to be crying about...
Simplicity is beauty and the sound of strike is phenomenal - this is one incredible drill..!
Thanks dudes,
William
Thanks William!
Love this concept. Makes so much sense as to why I straighten up in the downswing. Especially with longer clubs ie: driver
Hope this one serves you well, Brent!
I recently learned, albeit through another YT instructor, the trail hip does not/can not get closer to the ball. Once I realized this I immediately had loads of room for my trail elbow to travel and I was able, for the first time ever, return the handle to the setup position at impact. Such an amazing feeling. Eric, great information as always... Trevor, really enjoy your input as well! 🤟
Love it, Mark! Appreciate you being here with us!
Excellent video and is a complimentary video to another featuring Trevor Salzman titled, "What REALLY Causes Early Extension? (And How To FIX IT!)." This is part of the Eric Cogorno Golf videos, but oddly Eric is not in it. This video focuses on setup and has really helped me staying in balance. I think Eric and Trevor have good on-screen chemistry and watching these informative videos is a pleasure. Thank you for these excellent videos.
Really appreciate it Nicholas! Always a pleasure filming and working with Trevor!!
I like the Rick Smith, drop your left foot back drill. Much better for my hips.
Love it!
I’ve been told by guys I’ve taken lessons from I slide my back knee towards the ball causing me to lose space in my swing which in return made me have an over the top swing I’d have a terrible ball flight to the right just all around very poor contact I’m most definitely going to take this lesson to the range and hoping I get some results! Thank you gentlemen!
Our pleasure! Hope it helps!!
This is a great concept and the collaboration is excellent.
Thanks Alex!
Whats good about this is,I can do it in My living room while watching football. Good drill prep work for The winter time.
Love it Gregg!
Serial early extender here. This video was a game changer for me. Probably helped that I'm a trail leg straightener too...
Literally inside a dozen swings with the ball under the foot it has helped me discover the 'feeling' of pivoting the hips vs turning them (no apologies if that only makes sense to me 😁), which in turn allowed me to more easily clear my lead hip vs my trail hip going toward the ball in the downswing. Instant room.
Got any drills for backswing width?
Love to hear that Robert!
for sure on width:
Hard to beat the bucket drill....cant cheat it. Start short and slow: ruclips.net/video/7qpgswfeHJc/видео.html&pp=ygUSRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHdpZHRo
ruclips.net/user/shortsjVUJGYZc15M
Combine with right arm width feels: ruclips.net/video/cjq9CSOkGVU/видео.html&pp=ygUfRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgYXJtIHN0cmFpZ2h0IA%3D%3D
Great reaction Eric. That looks good. Doesn't that look good? Love it. This dude is classic.
:) Trevor is the best!
Fabulous absolutely brilliant.
Thank you!
I like the concept of having your trail hip turned deep behind you, but I would never straighten out my trail leg to do so. Maintain your knee flex while you let your hip work backwards.
Thanks for watching!!
@booger65man This was exactly my first thought. Great comment.
This makes no sense. Your hip gets further away from your foot/ the ground as you turn back so how do you do that without straightening the leg?
Great video. Would love to see shot tracer data during your sessions (shape, speed,, carry)
Thanks Aaron!
Great drill. Putting into practice tomorrow on the range
Thanks Mark! Hope this helps ya!
Great video! Thank you guys
Appreciate it Peter!

Question...an adjustment has to be made if doing the ball under the foot for the driver. Do you stay back instead of going forward at some point?
Great content love it!
Thanks Mark---appreciate ya!!
Great drill to reinforce the 'feel' I like...push the left hip back before the right side fires through
👊Hope it serves you well, Brett!
I'll give this a go. I tend to get too early on the trail toe ala JT. This should help. I sense some toe shanks in my future....😢
Haha yes this one should be a good one to help with that for sure. Start SLOW and like 1/2 swings, confirm with video and then build up
Your videos are usually simple and straight to the point this video has too many things in my opinion what is the key to fix early extension kindly advise thanks for your help Jack
Hey Jack! Sorry about that!
1. Put a ball under lead toes
2. Put a stick in front of leg
Avoid weight too far on toes and miss stick.
Start small and build to bigger swings
Great stuff!
Thanks John!!
That is brilliant!
Thanks Mike! I really like this one as well! So good to feel the correct lower body motions through the ball!
Can’t wait to try
Hope it helps Brian!
The golf ball under the right foot is an old drill from Mickey Wright from years ago
Love it!!
So does the weight on right foot stay on the ball of the foot and push off or go to heel? If the heel gets some weight is it just inside heel or outside heel?
Definitely some pressure shift into the inside part of the trail heel up to the top of the backswing.
You never want the pressure to roll to the outside of the trail foot, as there’s no benefit to that. You can keep it on the inside of the trail foot and then really push off that to start down.
We talked about this piece in the live lesson below👍

@@CogornoGolf I saw a lot of my problems in that video. Weight shift and pulls. Thanks so much, I'll work on that...
Without the ball under the right foot, is the pressure on your backswing more towards your heal rather than the toes on the right foot?
Hey Mark! Yes for sure
It moves from ball foot at setup to heel by top of backswing
This drill places a lot of pressure on the knee. I was doing this drill and my knee popped. My doctor suspects that this is a small meniscus tear; he was not a fan of the drill. If you over 50 and/or have had knee issues (I’ve torn my meniscus before), I would caution against this drill. This may not happen to anyone else that fits the above criteria, but I’m just giving a warning based on my personal experience.
Oh no! Gosh I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope you heal quickly
Will this help with over the top too?
Look up "Best golf lesson I have ever had" by Erndog golf. It will absolutely fix your over the top.
It shouldn't hurt!
But won't necessarily fix it without feeling something more with arms/club.
I like the one Jeremy mentioned below: ruclips.net/video/APsIJ4M2oSY/видео.html&pp=ygUcZXJpYyBjb2dvcm5vIGJlc3QgZHJpbGwgZXZlcg%3D%3D
or this one: ruclips.net/video/qOQebVaJmOg/видео.html&pp=ygUrZXJpYyBjb2dvcm5vIG5ldmVyIHN3aW5nIG92ZXIgdGhlIHRvcCBhZ2Fpbg%3D%3D
@@CogornoGolf Yep both of those are great lessons that i have never seen before. My problem was the opposite of most; I was way to deep on the back swing and the only option i had was to loop up and come over the top. Love your videos.
Looks like stack and tilt backswing
:)
lol hat, glasses and hair...great look
Doesn't work for me. I stay on the right side. Yes, I don't early extend. But rolling over the ball on right foot is not natural. Maybe with practice.
Ah I hear ya---lots of ways to get it done it this doesnt help
My hips hurt just watching this drill. Some of these drills are not good for an older golfer.
Straighten your right leg on the back swing.
If it hurts despite straightening your trail leg with a flared foot you need a new hip or time in the yoga studio.
:)
Same for me..😢
Well now your back is gonna hurt, because you just pulled landscaping duty with that comment.
It's hard to take this guy seriously when he's wearing a lampshade for a hat.
Way to complicated. Love you guys but this is to much
Put the ball under the foot. Swing.
Appreciate the feedback and support Michael!
