Wally Cox was an amazing actor, very intelligent man, very physically fit and one of the loves of actor Marlon Brando’s life. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, on 15 February 1973, at age 48 just a little over two years after this episode aired on 2 November 1970. Godfrey Cambridge also died of a heart attack in Los Angeles. However, Cambridge died just a little more than two years after Cox (November 1976), and Cambridge was still five years younger (43) than Cox at his time off death.
Samuel Lees In Peter Marshall's book about the show, he mentioned that the appearances Burt had on this show in between t.v. and movie roles saved Burt's career and he was right.

Australian TV stations did not broadcast any official equivalents of this "Squares" game show in the early 70's. We didn't have colour broadcasting back then and fewer than 8 channels per capital city meant less choice of viewing. There were similar short-lived "Aussie" versions (i.e. Celebrity Squares/Personality Squares which aired around 1967-69, 1975-76, 1981), but nothing in 1971. So it is with enormous gratitude that I say THANK YOU for this video, and to re-live a piece of history that would otherwise be forgotten. :-)
Good gosh, the Fall of 1971...I had just started 5th grade, and was age 10 at that time. I am 60 now. The war in Nam was still raging.I watched this game when new, for years. Many popular tv celebs were on it, many of whom have since died.
My grandmother once told me that Burt Reynolds did not want to talk about Dinah Shore during his interview with Barbara Walters. Well look and behold, she asked him about, and he refused to continue with the interview.
Godfrey Cambridge did not live much longer. This episode aired on 2 November 1970, his only appearance on the game show. He died almost exactly six years later at age 43, on 29 November 1976 in Los Angeles in rehearsal on the set of “Victory at Entebbe,” in which he was cast to play General Idi Amin. The part was filmed instead by actor Julius Harris. Amin claimed that Godfrey’s death was a result of God’s judgment.
Kenny Williams, the consummate professional actually made it sound like a treasure if you won it. He even made the Vega's cousin, the Pontiac Astre, sound good too. LOL
Unfortunately and very sadly, Eva and her fourth husband had separated that fall. She filed for divorce the next year (1972). Her divorce became final in June of '73. Then she married her fifth and husband three months later. When I saw in the papers that she had filed for divorce, I never knew this. In fact, I didn't even know that they had separated. And in her mother Jolie's 1975 autobiography, I read that he was seeing another woman for a year right behind Eva's back! And poor Eva was just simply crushed! So that means in 1971 for Eva, Green Acres and fourth marriage both came to an end in the same year.
Probably the best game show of all time. Paul Lynde 'had' to be given the questions in advance because no one is that witty, but if he was that witty he was brilliant
The show's disclaimer at the end of other episodes states that they were advised of the questions in advance, but not given the answers (or something to that effect). HOWEVER - Paul Lynde was indeed brilliantly witty. And that's what really matters.

This is from an era when people cold actually afford to own homes. They later had to adjust the prizes because washer/dryers, stoves, carpet and light fixtures would be useless to apartment dwellers. Also cash prizes had to be increased and prizes lowered because contestants increasingly had to pay taxes on all of those things as the IRS considered them income, which meant selling their prizes to pay the tax on them.
Peter made a rare mistake at the end of the second game. If X had gotten the square, with Godfrey Cambridge, he would not have won the game. It would have been 4 squares a piece, and the lady contestant would have taken Karen Valentine, for the 5 square win.
