Barbara Mowrey Yeah, she was married to the original Password Host, Allen Ludden. This episode is in 1981, which is the same year Allen died. Even though he didn’t pass yet, he was in the hospital suffering from cancer, and you can even see that Betty is a little sad because she’s playing Password without her husband.
You know they taped this show the day that Desi passed away. Betty consoled Lucy during the breaks. Then years later Betty’s husband, the host of this show passed away and Lucy was there for Betty. 2 icons and best friends!
My dear, you have no facts correct on your comment 🤦♀️ as others have stated. Another mistake you stated is Betty’s husband is not the gentleman hosting this show. Every false claim is easily dismissed and can be proven false … be well.
I used to watch the original show as a very young child, and loved this and the super password versions as well. All the hosts and contestants seemed to be having the best time. I remember the sweater Betty is wearing....seems like someone made a remark about it on one game show she was on.
"I love this lady on my left. I just thought I'd announce that to America." - Betty, referring to Lucy An amazing statement! Two American legends, playing Password Plus with each other.
Lucy and Betty were close friends. They and their husbands used to go out to dinner frequently. There are a lot of fake and shallow people in Hollywood and Lucy had a problem with that, but Betty was and is the real deal, so they got along perfectly.
This show was aired on 2 March 1981, Allen Ludden was still alive, but very sick with stomach cancer. He died on June 9th 1981. There is a big difference between Betty White of 1980 and 1981, she looked tired and older, funny how much a difference of 6 months or a year can make, probably taking care of Ludden was bearing her down. Desi Arnaz Jr. was 27 year old in this show.
Thanks for that information. I was sad to see that Allen Ludden was not the host, knowing he died that year. Yes, I agree that Betty looked a bit stressed.
Actually it was not the first time Desi Jr. played password. Gary Morton, Lucille Ball, Lucy Arnaz, and Desi Arnaz Jr. were on when it was still black and white and Lucy and Desi Jr. were teens.
Don’t know if people know this, but Betty White was never really into children, but she loves animals. All her charities have to do with animals. I love that. God bless her. May she rest in peace and all the people here and may they rest in peace
Betty White's humor in all of these Classic game shows reminds me of my Grandma on my Mum's side. She had the sweetest demeanor, but she could really work a family reunion if she wanted too! I'd like to think her wit rubbed off on me a bit.
It was the right key. It was the key that the singer sang in. It was Betty's key. A songcan be sung in any key the singer needs. ( love from a multi professional musician family )😊
Berty White was so good on the Mary Tyler Moore show. As so evil as Sue Ann. That she was so funny as Rose who was dummy on Golden Girls. Did anybody see her in the movie the Proposal. As the great grandmother.
for the record, it's NOT the first time Desi has played this game. Maybe the plus, but both he and his sister played with Lucy and her husband Gary Morton in the early 60's when they were young teens.
Interesting anecdote about Lucy and Charades: she was playing that game with some people I cannot remember in the forties but Laird Cregar was one of them. He died the next day after rigorous dieting.
Wonder when this was done. I'm thinking Allen was still alive and Tom was filling in in hopes Allen could return. Because Betty seems happy. Sometime before June 9 1981.
Allen was still alive at the time of this episode. I think by this point she knew he wouldn't be coming back, so her appearances on _Password Plus_ became more infrequent after Allen's death. She also appeared in 12 weeks of _Super Password_ with Bert Convy, including the final week where she destroyed the Ca$hword Toaster.
@@HardRockMiner This was from the week commencing 2nd March 1981, episodes 560-564. As I don't know the episode number I can't give more exact details than that.
She always seems to be in good spirits and is the sole person I've seen Lucy howl at, let alone have to repeat what Betty was naughtily whispering to her. Very nice to see them in their element. If anything I think Betty was cheering Lucy up. Amazing to watch!
They actually have cards with the first letter of all of the clues to the alphabetics and show them to the contestant receiving. This way the contestant, in this case Betty, can always see what letter they're currently on. Therefore she just needed her glasses to keep track of what letter she was on in alphabetics.
gosh, this game show sure was a "SUPER LONG" time ago (35 yrs. ago) & it was also 8 yrs. after Lucy died to........ April 26, 1989 died at the age of.... 77
I wonder if this is before or after Allen Ludden passed away. He was married to Betty White. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1980 and died sometime in 81.
Lucy did so many interviews and game shows with Desi Jr. and most of them with Desi Jr. showing up and “surprising” her. It always seemed to me that Lucy was nervous being out of character in public.
Betty White is always helping animal related groups or charities...what a gem
Golly her and Lucy.. show me anyone today who can even hold a candle, let alone learn from their examples.
Yes. Who cares about children with cancer when you can spend that money in koalas. 🤦♂

RIP Tom Kennedy! He will be dearly missed.
And Betty White, Dick Martin, and Lucille Ball!
Betty was so good at this game!
Her husband, Allen Ludden, was the host of the original Password. He passed away before this version.
He died June 1981...I think he was still alive when this was filmed.
Lu Ball is soooo calm and relax. Just wow!

YES, they have great chemistry together!
Funny I always thought there was. I’ve seen them on this show and assumed they had worked together.
Can’t imagine. Very different genres and actresses. Lucy was more slapstick, old-school comedy. Betty was much more about wit and sharp dialogue.

Rip Tom, Betty, and Lucy. I also miss Allen doing the Password Plus. Rip as well!!
