I grew up watching Paul Lynde. Hollywood Squares, Bewitched, cartoon voice-overs and more! I was heartbroken when he died. The world lost a comic genius!
Oh man. Growing up, 'Hollywood Squares' was one of the weeknight shows we wouldn't miss!! What an exceptional cast of characters led by the late, great Peter Marshall!! These were the best of times, IMHO!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
As much as people loved this show, it saddens me greatly that its real hero was unknown. The actors themselves were not the creators of the funny answers, much to the surprise of most people. One man was. I worked with him on several occasions. I’m speaking of the late great comedian (and later even funny presidential candidate ) Pat Paulson, who wrote all of the comedic answers to the questions in advance. The actors could choose to use the comedic answer if they liked, or give a different answer. Each actor had a list of questions and answers that he or she looked at in advance, so they knew the possibilities ahead of time. It was Pat who made the show hilarious, make no bones about it.
True that. Most "ad libbed" comedy you see on TV is actually fake (written). For example, the show that's on now called "After Midnight." The jokes are all pre-written and are on the lecterns in front of them. You can see them glance down to read the jokes just before they say them. Same with talk shows. The guests are interviewed and all the questions are pre-planned. Very few actual ad-libs actually happen.
The one reason why I liked watching this show was because of Paul Lynde. One time I didn't know what question was asked but Paul Lynde answered out AREN'T YOU GLAD? AREN'T YOU GLAD? WHEN YOU USE DIAL.

Paul may have come up with a gag answer here and there, but the celebs were briefed with the categories and joke/correct answers before each taping. The shows wasn't a test of their knowledge but of the contestants' ability to spot bluffs.
You obviously don't know much about Cliff Arquette. He was a comedy writer, a Civil War historian, and a brilliant man. I don't doubt that the answers were rehearsed but not because Cliff, or Grandpa" as you called him. was not quick.
There was one episode when he was called and he said HEY I AIN'T ANSWERING NO ETHNIC QUESTIONS. Peter asked "What does rouge mean in France?" Demond then acted like he was walking away then sat back down and said WHITE then looked away. It means red.
John Davidson was a great TV star back then. He could also sing. Search for his cover of "A taste of honey." He did one of the best versions, I think. A good singer.
The first clip came from Wink Martindale's RUclips channel and he talks about them making a gag reel, the second clip from a color kinescope which is also on RUclips was another actual gag "reel" and featured quite a few clips that were on the videotape copies Wink had but I removed the film ones as I wanted the best quality/longest clip but I had crappy video editing software at the time so I couldn't edit some of the clips together that had longer footage at the beginning and end.

By all accounts, Rose Marie was a great lady and a good sport. But she laughed like a wicked witch!
Some of the questions were written specifically for certain celebs along with the punchlines. Grandpa was not that quick!
