Honestly, I'd very much like to be able to make the character that I like for myself without spending hours and hours and settle for a "not so bad" one. Having both system of character creation would be best imo.
I think maybe some sort of filter would be better. As someone with an obsession with customization in games, I do like the idea that you more or less can't change anything that would require surgery. I also like that all models are sexless, which allows a wider range of appearances since many games that have sex options rely on stereotypes to differentiate. So maybe instead, there could be a filter for masculine/feminine/androgyne, aging, skin tone, build, etc. Just a vague way of categorizing to reduce time spent cycling and favoriting without taking away what makes the character creation great.

I think making everything homogenous is a bad thing, it takes away from pretty much every aspect of character creation. Also, why not allow the player the choice? Most players don't want to play as some androgynous looking character. That's just what gaming journalists like, most players prefer to make good-looking characters that have cool features. Like for example, I like making older lads with beards, scars, who generally look rough and like they have seen some s__t, but not ugly. I am not ugly, even if I was, I see no reason to play an ugly character. This kind of stuff is NOT good, not at all, it might be the worst part of this otherwise pretty nice game.
Really it'd just be nice if they let you narrow it down a bit. Like gender, weight, age, and race. Like, it doesn't matter how many of those other options you show someone if they don't want it they won't pick it so I don't understand why they don't let you filter it down
not a big fan of this. really wished they just gave us the option to create our own character. they already have all the body parts, face part, size, hair etc. let us chose every option even without sliders they can just give us option to chose head, eye, brow, nose, mouth, hair, height and weight. this is really preventing me form playing this game. i have tried forever to randomly generate someone that i want and i can't
This is sorta made for players to create characters that fit the setting instead of even more hideous abominations. You know how Dark Souls players do it - Some pink-skinned goblin with distorted factal features because it's haha funny lmao. Yeah, some people just inject memes into their bloodstream and can break the immersion of a pirate world.
@@d4n737 that wasn't what i meant. I didn't mean dark souls where you can stretch the body. I meant that use the presets from all the existing random characters and just let us change the head, eye, mouth, nose, etc by swapping it out with existing parts already. Like dragon dogma or cyberpunk where you just change out parts for existing parts in the database.

I just wish that you could see how your new character would look with clothes and different hair equipped. Facial hair and different clothes can change everything when it comes to SoT characters
Really enjoyed this for some reason. I think they don’t have beards because the facial features are basically unchangeable after creating your character, where as facial hair can be changed
I always thought that when you ‘favorite’ a pirate, the algorithm of the generator starts generating pirates based on your favorites. But I deadass spent an hour last creating another pirate from scratch. Wish it were more like that if I can’t make my own pirate atleast make it easier for me to receive my ‘not so bad’ one
@@rocknradrob4057 On the flip side though, those massive characters can seem to be harder to hit, since half of their belly is outside of the hitbox. You take a shot thinking, "How could I miss?" and the bullet flies right through them.

honestly? I really like this system cause it basically means I have to pick the best from the worst. I think we all WANT a character creator, the problem with that is if we got our hands on one in this game we might make characters that look perfect, but uh...newsflash? No one is perfect and that's exactly why I like this. It makes characters..that aren't perfect. They're rough around the edges, flawed, imperfect. JUST. LIKE. REAL. PIRATES...and I love it.
You know those two pirates from Pirates of the Caribbean? I don't know their names but one has a real huge bald spot and the other has a wood eye. Like them.
well with hit reg issues notwithstanding, the hitboxes are the same but you can't hide as well with a big body type. A skinny body type just disappears into multiple hiding spots on a ship plus its easier to hide behind stuff like masts when fighting to block shots.
To bad you can't turn off clothes or every one was in trauzers. As I spend hours looking for girl character with decent face and body. In end picked one (she was in dress).. When I unequiped it I did emotes to check her out... She was buffed... Like hella buffed..

But after re rolling about 3 hours.... or more i finally get small posture girl with cute face and all teeth and even got tanned skin (basically as close as it gets to my gf looks) one but got big scar on a chest. But as its a girl and there is no open chested clothes for them in game it looks really nice.
Character creation would make Sea of Thieves full of Greek gods, but we're talking about good ol' pyrates here. Beautiful people did not choose to be so, finding a beautiful character in the game would make us say 'wow, that pirates' gorgeous'. I know that many Skyrim players want to customize it (im a skyrim player, I customize my characters with mods like race menu, see...), but y'know. That thing makes good looking pirates so precious.

When you choose your character, just choose the body type the skin and the face you like. Anything else you can just change eventually. Personally I chose a fat hairy middle age guy cause it gives me average pirate captain feel. This guy 11:18

To give you an idea, if the devs wanted to make sure characters fit the theme you simply only offer certain head types etc. Darktide does this for example. You can choose but its only what the devs have offered. They could have offered all these variations and you simply choose.
In Darktide people do tend towards picking the same few options though (especially with the female faces) I am normally all about creating a custom character but I actually like this random pirate system, and I’m ok with being pushed out of my comfort zone in a little in what kind of character I have.
To get a pirate that had all but 1 of the features I wanted took me 76 hrs spread over 3 weeks of nothing but spinning and refreshing. You can get the look you want but it’s a lottery draw to get it.
I'm not even that mad at this. I know why this is there and... Well, it does do a few things you might not have considered. Like, what if it generates you some pirate that you wouldn't normaly make? I saw a few cool designs with plenty of character, despite them not being "Perfect". I saw something that looked like Rambo and I'd honestly take that character if I could. But there's no way I would get the Idea to make a pirate that looks like that on my own. An option to have you make a perfect character isn't that crucial because you can customise the fuck out of them in-game, that's just general features. Or it may just be that I'm very happy with my 19th century veteran grandpa

I'd like more options for this system to cover all bases, such as: -Full character creation. -Filters you can use to limit the randomizer. -An option to force the player to use a randomized pirate they didn't specifically choose.
I was a player on day 1 I put the game down for a short time to come back to my pirate years later and I have to say after putting the right clothes on him he’s pretty much my perfect idea of a pirate
What’s ruff for some people (like me) is that when you redo another pirate and you like him then after for awhile you don’t like him and want to change again. Maybe it’s just me but, man I’ve been having a ruff time just doing reroll after reroll 😂
I just did this this morning, I made a more normal looking pirate but tbh my more goofy pirate was growing on me if you remember the pirate with a wooden eye from Pirates of the Caribbean he looked like that and I didn't like it at first cause he and big ears but now I regret rerolling
I’ve been really hesitant about buying the appearance potion for I only wanted to get ancient by playing the game which obviously makes it a whole lot harder, anyway the other sources I’ve seen haven’t given as much detail as this video, thank you so much for this information and I’m finally positive about getting the potion!👍😁
I've wanted to pick this game up for a while now but it just doesn't seem great for solo play. Still, love watching the character creator spit out various looks.
Great vid!!! So for the hitbox there is no impact based on player size. Second thing, that potion you mentioned where you can pick a new pirate costs real money! So really really take your time because the only real way is to delete your pirate unless you want to spend money!
After 3 1/2 hrs i finally got my Char... Full open normal eyes, all teeth, normal/pink lips, no scars all over the face, not to skinny/fat, decent looking and not like they got beaten up and stung by hornets.
I wouldn't have as big an issue if you could change it with out paying for it... Even if it was a case of "Do this quest for item to use" or ingame money
Just a heads up, it’s purely luck based whether you run into them, but there are Ancient Skeletons in the game you can kill that will reward you with Ancient Coins. And you get Ancient Coins periodically from the season pass. So after some time playing you can get the potion without having to pay for it. (Or if you’re playing on Xbox/Microsoft Store you can earn points that you can cash in for free Ancient Coins.)
It took me a span of 2 days to find my perfect pirate (even then I wasn’t satisfied with her eyes, but I settled). Day 1 I spent 5 hours before giving up.. Day 2 took around 3-4 hours before she popped. I consider myself lucky tbh. 8-9 hours is on the low side to how many hours people spend trying to find their perfect pirate.
Some people feel like this is a bad feature but I love it. One thing I would like is if you were able to try on cosmetics with favorited pirates in the generator to see how they would look.
took me almost 4 days of not playing the game and just keep looking for a good pirate, im pretty sure i got the most beautiful female pirate in the game.

ive tried 4 times throughout my sea of thieves time and can never find anything really good and I just got my girlfriend to finally play and a character from her first roll is actually astonishing, the amount of jealousy i have is driving me to look for another character right now😭
I just wish I could have slots so I could switch between a few pirates , I’d love to use the Jack sparrow outfit but it doesn’t fit my character at all , I just wish I could have a few slots to swap kinda like an outfit
I didnt get the chance to make a character. My character was just there when i started up the game. Havent had that circle of pirates in de pub. Im happy with my pirate tho.
One question, do all female character have like that beard shadow on their faces? Aren't they all shaved? Because i used the appearance change potion and chose a muscular female character and it has like a beard shadow.
Im aware im late for the party here, but people in the comments whining about the system are players who take the game too seriously. This game was made to NOT take seriously, but be a silly, pirate-fantasy stereotype where you could laugh and have fun with your friends and others, looking at their ugly mugs while playing an instrument and raising your tankards of grog! Youre not going to be able to see your character for the most part anyway, unless you do an emote or sit down somewhere. I get that people want to look like a certain way, but everything doesnt always have to be perfect to be fun. So just go with it and have fun like the game was intended. Cause if you take games too seriously then this game is most likely not your cup of grog. Cheers, mateys!
It’s not misleading.. all that you brought up isn’t what’s being brought up. And it isn’t a good argument for a design choice. It’s relevant for them, but matters a lot more to the consumer. It doesn’t effect “the feel” when a player designs what they want to look like.
its fine if you find your character in 5 minutes but people spend upwards of 11 hours or more which is kindve fine if your just having fun but if u just want your character and see so many that are so close but arent quite right its annoying, especially when your just looking for someone who looks human i for one dont think theres a single good looking female most of the men id be happy with but not a single female and i only see the same 5 faces over and over and over and over again and what if i wanted a black character? or asian? i NEVER see asian characters ive seen like 2 in a session of like 2 hours i should at least be able to filter the types i want (female) (male) (asian) (white) so on, sure randomize the face the weight the age and build as much as you want but just those few filters i feel would help SOOoooo much. Edit: and someone else pointed out a really good point the characters should be nearly fully naked cause clothing does mess with the look to much and you cant tell what tattoos you might have on or scars! until you get in game beat the tutorial then you can change it. i also think the poses shouldnt be the way they are a plain expressionless face is the best way to tell what they're gonna look like not a stupid grin or smirk
What I want is a character with a long ass beard but I just can’t find it, I just powered up the game for the 1st time today and I looked up to see if you can further customize the more you play the game
Pretty sure all this randomises is, sex, body size, and race... Different hair, hair colour and clothes sure but those are all cosmetics. I doubt there's more than 50 unique options but maybe there are more unique details that I've missed. Edit: age too so maybe 100-150
Not a fan of this. I’m spending more than 2 hours but still nothing, I mean just why? If you play the game…. They’re own characters looks totally awesome but we get randomly generated characters, just why?
This is what I don't understand even as and possibly even more as a game developer myself. Why in the world am I controlling what the player base looks like based on what I want I want them to look like when the player base quite clearly doesn't even like it? There are two main responses to this genuinely stupid system, either it's settling for something that you find to be less ugly (or less different from what you wanted to look like) than the other options, or you spend literally hours upon hours rolling dice. I wish they recorded the amount of time people spent in the character creator. I am in no doubt when I say the most bought item in the pirate emporium has to be the character re-roll option. The fact that you can't even select how many teeth you have when the animations don't grin in the selector half the time is frustrating. Most pirates looked like regular people, because they were in fact human beings.. You can make people look less hygienic without making them have features that most people don't want to play as. The fact that nearly everybody that plays Sea of Thieves starts of the game disappointed is such a garbage design choice. No wonder most people drop this game so fast. To stay with the game you have to get over so many decisions that the devs have made that only caters to the developers themselves I find it to be really disappointing. I'm currently re-rolling my character for the 3rd time because if you can't let go how your character looks it wears on you and eventually you just say fuck it and buy the potion. 2 hours in and still rolling. Last character took 3 hours and I wasn't even happy with it. Nice system. I don't understand why you'd defend what the developers want players to be over what the players themselves want to be. It seems to me that the developers have zero faith in players not making Jack Sparrow all over the place, but I really don't see the issue with it in the first place. There are people who watched Pirate of the Caribbean and wanted to be Barbossa and there are people who want to be the guy that keeps losing his eye. Let people be who they want to be. Christ in heaven, I don't understand why it is so hard. You've already admitted your mistake by releasing the potion to change appearance again.
IMO horrible character selection, it's not that evry pirate is fully unique. There is a clear pre-set on the chars which are randomly selected, pre-defined body types, skin colors, facial styles etc. And it bothers me that I can't just select it on my own.
Worst character creation method ever. I prefer to create my own character, not premade. This is a big NO to buy this game. I will buy when they fix this and some other things. (Nameable ships, custom flags, etc)

Very fine point! Like, some of those pirates may be sporting badass tattoos and scars, but the clothing wont always let us see it.

The body size doesn't affect the hitbox.
It does affect hiding though. You can use emotes to lay down behind objects and hide from other players, large bodies will stick out more.

I was a player on day 1 I put the game down for a short time to come back to my pirate years later and I have to say after putting the right clothes on him he’s pretty much my perfect idea of a pirate
What’s ruff for some people (like me) is that when you redo another pirate and you like him then after for awhile you don’t like him and want to change again. Maybe it’s just me but, man I’ve been having a ruff time just doing reroll after reroll 😂
I just did this this morning, I made a more normal looking pirate but tbh my more goofy pirate was growing on me if you remember the pirate with a wooden eye from Pirates of the Caribbean he looked like that and I didn't like it at first cause he and big ears but now I regret rerolling
I’ve been really hesitant about buying the appearance potion for I only wanted to get ancient by playing the game which obviously makes it a whole lot harder, anyway the other sources I’ve seen haven’t given as much detail as this video, thank you so much for this information and I’m finally positive about getting the potion!👍😁
I've wanted to pick this game up for a while now but it just doesn't seem great for solo play. Still, love watching the character creator spit out various looks.
spent prob 100 hours solo when i started when u pick it up its easy also they buffed the solo ship out of its mind def worth a try bro

Solo is definitely still fun plus sometimes you get lucky and meet some fun pirates that you can play with.
Solo is very doable. Spend some time on a disorganized galley or brig, or under an idiot of a captain and hitting the sea solo is very liberating.

Great vid!!! So for the hitbox there is no impact based on player size. Second thing, that potion you mentioned where you can pick a new pirate costs real money! So really really take your time because the only real way is to delete your pirate unless you want to spend money!
After 3 1/2 hrs i finally got my Char... Full open normal eyes, all teeth, normal/pink lips, no scars all over the face, not to skinny/fat, decent looking and not like they got beaten up and stung by hornets.

I wouldn't have as big an issue if you could change it with out paying for it... Even if it was a case of "Do this quest for item to use" or ingame money
Just a heads up, it’s purely luck based whether you run into them, but there are Ancient Skeletons in the game you can kill that will reward you with Ancient Coins. And you get Ancient Coins periodically from the season pass. So after some time playing you can get the potion without having to pay for it. (Or if you’re playing on Xbox/Microsoft Store you can earn points that you can cash in for free Ancient Coins.)
It took me a span of 2 days to find my perfect pirate (even then I wasn’t satisfied with her eyes, but I settled). Day 1 I spent 5 hours before giving up.. Day 2 took around 3-4 hours before she popped.
I consider myself lucky tbh. 8-9 hours is on the low side to how many hours people spend trying to find their perfect pirate.

Some people feel like this is a bad feature but I love it. One thing I would like is if you were able to try on cosmetics with favorited pirates in the generator to see how they would look.
took me almost 4 days of not playing the game and just keep looking for a good pirate, im pretty sure i got the most beautiful female pirate in the game.
took me about 20 min approx. It is really enjoyable to reroll imo

ive tried 4 times throughout my sea of thieves time and can never find anything really good and I just got my girlfriend to finally play and a character from her first roll is actually astonishing, the amount of jealousy i have is driving me to look for another character right now😭

Im aware im late for the party here, but people in the comments whining about the system are players who take the game too seriously. This game was made to NOT take seriously, but be a silly, pirate-fantasy stereotype where you could laugh and have fun with your friends and others, looking at their ugly mugs while playing an instrument and raising your tankards of grog! Youre not going to be able to see your character for the most part anyway, unless you do an emote or sit down somewhere. I get that people want to look like a certain way, but everything doesnt always have to be perfect to be fun. So just go with it and have fun like the game was intended. Cause if you take games too seriously then this game is most likely not your cup of grog. Cheers, mateys!

It’s not misleading.. all that you brought up isn’t what’s being brought up. And it isn’t a good argument for a design choice. It’s relevant for them, but matters a lot more to the consumer. It doesn’t effect “the feel” when a player designs what they want to look like.

Why not have both a randomization and personal customization like idk every other game with character customization

this is fine, some people will however jump on the first oppourtinity to complain and moan over something.
i found one i liked but i completely forgot to favorite her ugh
its fine if you find your character in 5 minutes but people spend upwards of 11 hours or more which is kindve fine if your just having fun but if u just want your character and see so many that are so close but arent quite right its annoying, especially when your just looking for someone who looks human i for one dont think theres a single good looking female most of the men id be happy with but not a single female and i only see the same 5 faces over and over and over and over again and what if i wanted a black character? or asian? i NEVER see asian characters ive seen like 2 in a session of like 2 hours i should at least be able to filter the types i want (female) (male) (asian) (white) so on, sure randomize the face the weight the age and build as much as you want but just those few filters i feel would help SOOoooo much. Edit: and someone else pointed out a really good point the characters should be nearly fully naked cause clothing does mess with the look to much and you cant tell what tattoos you might have on or scars! until you get in game beat the tutorial then you can change it. i also think the poses shouldnt be the way they are a plain expressionless face is the best way to tell what they're gonna look like not a stupid grin or smirk

Pretty sure all this randomises is, sex, body size, and race... Different hair, hair colour and clothes sure but those are all cosmetics. I doubt there's more than 50 unique options but maybe there are more unique details that I've missed.
Edit: age too so maybe 100-150

Not a fan of this. I’m spending more than 2 hours but still nothing, I mean just why? If you play the game…. They’re own characters looks totally awesome but we get randomly generated characters, just why?
This is what I don't understand even as and possibly even more as a game developer myself.
Why in the world am I controlling what the player base looks like based on what I want I want them to look like when the player base quite clearly doesn't even like it?
There are two main responses to this genuinely stupid system, either it's settling for something that you find to be less ugly (or less different from what you wanted to look like) than the other options, or you spend literally hours upon hours rolling dice.
I wish they recorded the amount of time people spent in the character creator.
I am in no doubt when I say the most bought item in the pirate emporium has to be the character re-roll option.
The fact that you can't even select how many teeth you have when the animations don't grin in the selector half the time is frustrating.
Most pirates looked like regular people, because they were in fact human beings.. You can make people look less hygienic without making them have features that most people don't want to play as.
The fact that nearly everybody that plays Sea of Thieves starts of the game disappointed is such a garbage design choice.
No wonder most people drop this game so fast. To stay with the game you have to get over so many decisions that the devs have made that only caters to the developers themselves I find it to be really disappointing.
I'm currently re-rolling my character for the 3rd time because if you can't let go how your character looks it wears on you and eventually you just say fuck it and buy the potion.
2 hours in and still rolling. Last character took 3 hours and I wasn't even happy with it.
Nice system. I don't understand why you'd defend what the developers want players to be over what the players themselves want to be. It seems to me that the developers have zero faith in players not making Jack Sparrow all over the place, but I really don't see the issue with it in the first place.
There are people who watched Pirate of the Caribbean and wanted to be Barbossa and there are people who want to be the guy that keeps losing his eye. Let people be who they want to be. Christ in heaven, I don't understand why it is so hard.
You've already admitted your mistake by releasing the potion to change appearance again.
IMO horrible character selection, it's not that evry pirate is fully unique. There is a clear pre-set on the chars which are randomly selected, pre-defined body types, skin colors, facial styles etc. And it bothers me that I can't just select it on my own.
Worst character creation method ever. I prefer to create my own character, not premade. This is a big NO to buy this game. I will buy when they fix this and some other things. (Nameable ships, custom flags, etc)
