Jordan was effortless (or it appears to be effortless) everything was so smooth and fluid. Kobe copied most of his moves but they never felt effortless. It is like Kobe is 30 frames per second and Jordan is 120/s. That is what made him so amazing to watch

Imo Jordan's aerial abilities are the most jaw dropping part of his game. Never seen hang time like that, never seen in air ball control like that, never seen someone look as athletic and natural while off the ground. You already mentioned his mid air IQ. Also, the strength (and coordination) it would take to absorb so much mid air heavy contact and still dunk or hit shots on the way down is astounding.... I love watching great jumpers block shots, when MJ launched himself straight up to swat a ball out of the sky, it was a thing of beauty.

Jordan was smooth, footwork on a 100. Maybe Hakeem was a hair better with footwork but not by much. Jordan was all around just great. His dunks are obviously great but what about that lay package, finshing on 100, and with either hand. Mid range on 101 (if thats possible), post game on 100, ball fakes on 100, mid air adjustments on a level no one is close too. Best passing lane defender ever, Hof level help defense, and a very good iso defender as well. Combine that with a 4.3 forty, a 48 inch vert, and those huge ass mitts and well you got Michael Jeffery Jordan.

Look for a video of Jordan's last three season's with the Bulls that's focused entirely on his mid-range game and footwork. It is mind blowing. As his athleticism began to decline in his mid-30s, he reinvented his game to remain completely unguardable and stand alone as still clearly the best player in the world. MJ and Kobe were out one night and instead of having a good time, they argued the whole night about who would win 1v1 with both in their prime.
MJ: "I would hit you with this move"
Kobe: "I'd defend that move like this"
MJ: "Then I'd counter with this move"
Kobe: "I'd be expecting that counter move"

the 80's was the tallest era in NBA history...but Jordan will make you forget he is 6'4.75" barefoot, he played so much bigger. Jordan usually wouldn't use the dribble to fake you out, he would use his body language. That's why it appears he uses less movement, and wastes nothing...not prone to try and dance on you. He will take it into you and get you to bite one way or the other. Players today don't use the triple threat position like that anymore. They will start the dribble immediately and dance with it.

Great observations, never noticed that... One thing i've noticed is Jordan's method of using double teams to his advantage, especially in the post. He would time his move just as the double was getting there, using their momentum against them, either spinning away from the 2nd defender or between them if they left too much space while approaching, and beating 2 guys instead of 1. He didn't need to pass out of a double team to make them pay.

I agree when you say he lost a step after his first retirement. In fact I felt he lost a step after the 1992 Olympics, but it was more apparent after his return from retirement. But what he lost in athleticism he gained in IQ. 96-98 Jordan was using all of his fundamentals and IQ to the point where his game was probably more polished than ever. Reminds me of how Floyd Mayweather adjusted his style as he aged. The mark of an elite athlete is to make the correct adjustments when needed and still dominate. If I were to pick a prime MJ? Probably 1990/1991 season where he had the perfect balance of his 80s athleticism and 90s IQ

That off season, while he was shooting Space Jam, Warners Brothers built the Jordan Dome on the lot where he scrimmaged and worked out with current NBA players and when he came back that next season his explosiveness was back. You're absolutely right young fella.
MJ had indeed lost a step (athletically) during his 2nd tenure. In fact, those of us who were old enough to have witnessed his career from the beginning, began to notice the decline during the '93 season.
But as you stated, he was just SO FAR AHEAD of the crowd, that it really didn't even matter.
Because during his comeback season ('95) and those 2nd 3-peat seasons, he'd TOTALLY refined his game to the point, where he became a precise, methodical, tactician, who didn't need his past, surreal athleticism to obliterate defenders/defenses.
And as you so astutely pointed out, there was no wasted movement. And with aid of the Triangle Offense, it allowed him to carve up defenses with geometric precision.
NOTE: 2nd 3-peat MJ is who Kobe (RIP) modeled his game after. Because he knew he could NEVER duplicate prime MJ, due to him never having that kinda' freakish athleticism.

@@bwink23 80's jordan was a different animal athletically. It's what being in your 20's will do though. He just became a better BB player in the 90's with age.

He lost a step because he just came back from baseball, different body shape /routine, but after that still unstoppable, he played smarter with as he aged.

They knew he was coming! He exceeded all expectation he settle for little to no pay when he signed with the bulls. They knew he was coming and he had goat status in 84. ask me how and why. They tried to stop him but he over came and conquered!

There's your LeBron comparison at 12:11. Dunked over Zoe Mourning at 6' 10"/265 lbs. Two inches taller than LeBron and just as heavy (with more muscle!). Jordan would have done the same thing over and over to Bron. Not big enough? I saw dunks over Minute Bol (7' 7"), Ewing (7'), Ostertag (7' 2"), Mutombo (7' 2") and SO many more. He'd average 40 a game today. Oh, and a 48" vertical (tied for highest in NBA history)! LeBron, maybe we'll give you third all-time after Air and Mamba...

MJ had no weaknesses. His 3pt shot was avg but that's the worst you could say about him. He worked his ass off to get his game to that point. That's all hard work plus his never ending desire to prove himself. Even when he was the best he still thought he had something to prove

Didn't he miss his first dunk when he was all alone down court and the stadium almost went silent and the commentators didn't know quite what to do in that moment. He got some momentum going by the end of the season but it didn't feel like him. Showed everyone he was really back in the next season.

This highlight reel is actually longer. Shows why he left the game because of the murder of his dad. Them playing a little baseball for the White Sox before making a comeback to basketball and doing another 3 beat. In glad I was able to actually see the jordan era first hand. Nobody have I ever seen that's even come close. The closest I believe was Kobe though.

Jordan in the 80s and 90s. Early 2000s was an nba defensive player's worst nightmare. He was dunking on multi defensive players. He was no joke. Nba back then, you got punishment, and you dished out punishment. There wasn't this foul acting. Or whining to a referee. The nba now is a powder puff version. Players act like their getting murdered if a defensive player so much as touch them. Fans now don't understand what the nba was really like back then. Today, to many premadonna players are out for months with superficial injuries or even maded up ones. This is why I don't watch nba now. It's become to tamed or the fun watching it is gone.😔

Jordan played in a time of defensive bangers …Lebron gets flicked its a foul….give me Magic - point Jordan - 2 guard Bird - small forward Wilt - Center and Tim Duncan - power forward in their prime… I’ll put them up against any 5 you got…power forward was the toughest Karl Malone or Charles Barclay are right there…
Mad respect for Kobe but at his position it’s not even close for me …Jordan…

You asked how did he not duck that? Well Jordan had a 48 inch verticle jump.. nobody can jump higher then him or hang in the air then him this is why he got the nickname Air Jordan. Because of that verticle jump he was even dunking on 7 footers.. nobody can do a thing about him when he goes for that dunk because you're not reaching the ball in his hand he gonna hoover over you.

I notice the young guys these days call everyone that falls for a faint stupid. Now guys would rather just stand there like a cone over risking getting faked/crossed. Like in white men can jump with westley snipes. You'd rather look good and lose, over look bad and win. Back then guys would rather try and have the possibility of getting embarrassed if it gave them a better chance to win.

Any athlete basketball or otherwise should study MJ's footwork. Absolutely no wasted movements. His fundamentals allowed for maximum effort & strength. EASILY the most fundamentally sound basketball player of all time. The only other athlete with "comparable" footwork was Roger Federer in tennis. That's it.
