DD-WRT is a great way to get the best performance and features out of your router. Learn how to tell if your router is compatible, how to upgrade, and hear Linus explain some of the cool functionality you can unlock! - Наука
Nobody:
RUclips recommendation: Hey, psssst ... wanna see a young Linus?
Me: 2012? Wow, this channel must've been a ton of work.
DD-WRT is still my go to firmware in 2021. Tomato is cool too, but with entware packages and all of the features and stability of ddwrt, you can't go wrong
agreed
Yep. I can select 5 ghz wifi channels that are free from my 11-20 neighboring network's interference (I live in a small apartment). I would get kicked off the internet whenever "Bedroom Display" SSID would turn on which shared the same channel. Now I am on channel 100 all by myself!!! I started on channel 64 but I only got 78-100mb/s on speed test. Once I moved to 100 I got 270mb/s which was the fastest the OEM firmware could do. The status tells me the cpu temp 64^C and the wifi speed ramping between 433-866mb/s. I think dd-wrt is the bee's knees!
I did this install on a WRT54G2 V1 and followed the steps on dd-wrt wiki page!
Only tried this on this Cisco model no.but definitely worth the work. I also had to use tftp.exe and load a second .bin file which was read by router in tftp flash mode to get this to load successfully. I saw this guy load that and was jealous! You had it pretty easy there. Nice firmware upgrade regardless!
Great Firmware Upgrade.
Been using DD-WRT in my routers for years.
Thanks Linus for spreading the word about DD-WRT it's awesome
Good old DD-WRT! I had a lot of fun playing with it a couple years ago. I still use my linksys router as a wireless bridge.
Wow. I can't believe I watched a video from 2012 and it's been useful :P
The upgrade was fabulous. Best part is assigning limits to secondary wireless devices while prioritizing your #1 device for maximum data flow. The Bandwidth is all MINE! (Well, 85% of it, anyway. Can't be too greedy ;)
Now on to overclocking.......
*smoke alarm*
thanks DD-WRT,and Linus,awsome stuff
Seriously how many channels do you have? Wow your production quality has gone way up too. Good for you.
I've been running this FW for over a year on a cheap TP-Link. It's awesome.
nice test bench you got there!!!
Thanks to this, my WRT54GS router is now a WAP extender ^.^
I'm still using a old WRT54G v2.2 router with dd-wrt firmware for a long time.
I love using the QoS, as well as the Services to set Static IP base on client's MAC Address, without having to touch the client's devices. This makes it so much more easier to manage both port forwarding and QoS bandwidth usage.
would like to see one whit tomato cfw too.
DD-WRT is great! Right now I have a Linksys WRT54G running as a bridge and I can connect all my desktops that don't have wireless cards and get internet at almost full speeds.
Back when the Ncix intro had music from a porn film ...
back when ncix existed
Rip ncix
I've used DD-WRT for years on an old WRT54G router. It can breath new life into old hardware like you wouldn't believe (the original firmware only had WPA-TKIP wireless; DD-WRT added WPA2 as well as AES to the mix). However, I too think Tomato is now the superior firmware. It's much easier to navigate for one thing, and it's more actively developed. But that being said, try both and see what works best for you.
10 years later (Mid 2022). I used DD-WRT to fix a very specific issue of connection drops (due to ISP-DS-lite-DS-full issue). DD-WRT lets you set up a VPN on the backend of the connection. Basically, a backend VPN that doesn't affect your internal network IP structure. ISP--> {VPN-->Router} --> internet network.
i've used this firmware on my dlink dir600 wirreles router and it ROCK's. from my max 10mb dowload i've come up to half ~4mb on torrent(with 2 laptops connected(via wifi) and 1 desktop pc)...but i got so much better stability and other's cool feature's , from my experience with this firmware i'd say that it deserves a 10+
Holy LTT! I found this "tech tip" accidentally by looking to dd-wrt a router.
Thanks Linus!
used this to turn my linksys 400n into a bridge...luv dd-wrt :)
This is what i was looking for...
Thanks-a-lot dude .
Thank you very much
Looking this 2012 vid I can say. Linus does not gets old. Same face after all those RUclips years. LOL
open to the uk!
Nice Video!!
Wish he talked more about the extra features you get when updating to these firmwares.
How badass are u, using your crossfire x2 7970 rig for a dd-wr2 demonstration
@AgentHydra Most D-link routers can be turned into a bridge easy enough. Shut off the DHCP and shut off all other routing functions. A quick google search will get you all the details you need for your given model.
thanks for the help
With dd-wrt can you set up a usb 3.0 flash drive or ssd drive that you can share with all your devices on your network easily and painlessly?
Cool Video!!
Does this void the Warranty on the linksys labeled open source
really really cool ...
I use ddwrt and changed my ssid name in setup. Sometimes my windows pc can't decide which ssid to use...the new one or the old one. ?? Any help on this? --thanks do you need to reset the router to factory defaulys before changing the ssid?
Just curious. Under the dd-wrt website for my specific router model which is the Linksys EA6900 it only shows the DD-WRT Webupgrade file. It says it's a webflash.bin file. Thanks in advance
I bought a TP-Link Archer C9 V2 recently and have tried everything to get the parental controls working. Is DD-WRT the way forward, or will I have the same issues with time restrictions simply not working?
I'm using dd-wrt on my WNDR3800. What do you recommend for a router, that is most compatible, and provides the most features from dd-wrt?
Hi Linus. Is there anything written about security regarding DD-WRT? The website seems kind of shady and seems to obfuscate any information on security with this firmware? Has the code been audited or checked by the open-source community? If so, are there any reliable community based documentation on this? What if they embed code to leak your network traffic to an external server or destination as this would be technically possible. Is there any proper documentation on security for DD-WRT? I have been looking online and there has not been anything much on this issue. Thanks.
Hi, why does my huawei b315s-936 router not have a option to search networks? can ddwrt provide it?
ahh Linus listend to me...you are truely awsome Linus :]
Hey quick question, I have the WRT54G v8 model and should I use the v8.0 revision? That's the only one close to v8 so im not sure if they're the same revision/model.
me: hmm i wonder if dd-wrt has voip stuff
10 year old linus video: holla holla
me: side quest discovered, holy sh*t i wonder if i'm still subscribed
Have you try Open WRT?, thanks
nice vids man keep them going 4ever
nice comments man keep them going 4ever
What router is the best router to buy for this item
@Mr123pspfreak how did u break it , im trying to get it back to the orinagal firmware
Linus, could you compare these after market coolers on 7970's
ASUS DirectCU II, Gigabyte's triple FAN and XFX Double D?
can you change your outgoing TTL in DDWRT
@AgentHydra many can be turned into a repeater or bridge very easily. With out DD-WRT. Though, DD-WRT is very good.
Have you done one installing the VPN on the Linksys 1900ACS?
@cal920c What kind of router do you have? I have an asus and if I wanted to go back, they include a restoration utility for windows
Erm, should I get a E4200v1 and install dd-wrt or just get the e4200v2 which has better performance with the stock firmware? Will dd-wrt on the v1 help the performance to the point that it surpasses the v2...?
OpenWrt or DD-WRT ? Which one should i flash ? which is better ? I've Linksys Router Wireless G Broadband
@cal920c if you read the page on dd-wrt for the router, they state whether or not it's easily flashed back. or should say at least, did with mine
@mjedi7 I have the same router as you and the same problems. I flashed the router with dd-wrt a long time ago but the wifi stopped working for some odd reason.
Ive done this on a few routers works GR8 be sure to read everything then when you think you got it read again before you flash, everyone that ive done had to install 2 files a mini first flash, then firmware full or mini, I have 2 in my home and one in garage 2 are 54G v1, 1 in living room repeater client with 5 ports I hooked all my entertainment system to, the one in garage just so i can have wifi out there they just plug into wall and pick up signal from my WNDR4000 all have DD-WRT GR8 if you need to have wifi upstairs or basement and don't want to run cables everywhere ;-) just besure to read and understand everything before flashing, one thing he forgot 30-30-30 reset have to hold reset button 90 seconds 30 with power 30 with power unplugged and 30 with power again
@cbremer83 uh, got any suggestions? i have an old d-link router and it doesn't support dd-wrt after all lol
Thanks
i already did this on my Linksys WRT54GL ver1.1
Q: can you go back to stock firmware? (just in case for example i don't need it any more)
The lumberjack Linus shall rise
I havea crappy Tenda N4 is it supported?
is their not a way to flash your firmware back to the way it should be?
nice:D as always!
Notice how Linus uses a 7970 Crossfire rig for this demo. That's how bad ass it is ;)
@7SealedNames first thing go to cmd prompt ant type "ipconfig" you need to make sure the default gateway is the address you are using to try to gain access... if that is what you are using try typing these 2 commands one after another in cmd prompt
"ipconfig /release" (notice the space between the "g" and the slash)
after that has completed type "ipconfig /renew" this will make your computer forget and then re establish connection to your router.. if that doesnt work you probably bricked it
great!!
ncix would be my favorite retailer, if they would ship worldwide
This video is like a time capsule. The comments are so old. Damn...
I believe some D-Link Routers can be recovered If It messes up. If you hold the reset button for 30 seconds, It's going to kick It into Recovery Mode to restore the Factory Firmware.
I've been using DD-WRT on my D-Link DIR 601 for 8 Months and never had problems with It.
AWWW TINY LINUS :D
I know this video was published 5 years ago. Has anything changed since then in terms of procedure to upgrade the firmware, or they're pretty much the same?
trinhk same shit. 30-30-30 reset, tftp and ssh access to upload the firmware, another 30-30-30 reset, etc etc etc.
One other advantage of DD-WRT is that it isn't vulnerable to the WPS exploit, since it doesn't support WPS to begin with.
@TLeteger The good old NCIX intro..
is there a way to flash back to the old firmware? like say: you want to give it to your uncle because you just bought a new router...
Are this work with linksys 120!!
wut you can turn a router into a wifi repeater? totally checking this out
Also worth checking out OpenWRT and Tomato guys.
does any one know how to get the orginal firmware back for tplink wr841nd ?
I'm gonna set up a router with DD-WRT in my company. I've seen that the most popular routers seems to be the ones that consumes most power + produces the most heat which I fear will reduce the quality of the IC's quicker just because they want to have those extra mbits, we only have 30mbit fiber so the speed is not very important anyway. But I want it to be stable+hold for many years ahead, in other words high quality hardware :) I'm gonna setup a wlan for us and a wlan for guests also possibly a virtual lan for guests if possible. What would be the best choice? I've been thinking about WRT54GL.
Underclock in ddwrt. lower tx power. profit
@Threedoorsjosh No really, according to benchmarks the i5 is better than the AMD FX 8 core, but the FX 8 core when tested can handle much more than the i5.
Had a lab at school requiring me to install DD-WRT onto a router and who do I find in this video? Linus! Sure looks odd seeing him in anything else than LTT.
Ddwrt on tplink ac3150 wave 2?
Hi im having a seriouslious problem with my upgraded linksys E1200 router to ddwrt firmware where i mistake automaticalli used ddwrt 4300 webflash wirelessli i dont have in wireless signal in my Linksys E1200 router is there ani 1 that can Help My Sister is Completeli Angri With Me And I Dont Have Ani Access TO fixing this problem to get Wireless internet Working everi 24 hours Without the Internet Connection dropping at a veri low signal or nut working path time
I don't notice a significant performance increase with DD-WRT - only like a 15 dBm gain when I boost the tx power up to 84 mW....
I have a dd-wrt router connected on the network of my school and the computers connected on the router network must set the proxy of my school to access Internet. So I would like to set my router with this proxy, so that the computers connected on the router network could visit Internet without setting the proxy
Question. The WRT32XB's Interface works well for what I need for. Console gaming.
Install DD-WRT will benefit me?
What ya need in that case is a PC, boyo.
@PaT07M u can use a telnet client as default. Feels nearly like OpenBSD.
Google "dd-wrt ssh" and there is a guide how :)
If you ship to uk i will give you a thumbs up :P
I much prefer Tomato. The main branch isn't upgraded anymore, but other people have taken up the slack and made new Tomato releases. I run it constantly on my WRT54GL, which handles the traffic from torrenting, an FTP server, and Netflix streaming without so much as a hiccup. Only time it only gets reset is when the power goes out.
note that with the E3200 the 5GHz wifi will not work when you put DD-wrt on it
does this make it any easier to kick a device from your network?
@Stephenzwa what kinda contest gives out routers for winners? what a borring prize :D
Google asus dd wrt and there will be a link to the ASUS site that says 'You Spoke, We Listened" and routers there are guaranteed to work with the ddwrt firmware
My router kept cutting out the wireless and generally being shitty. Upgraded to dd-wrt and haven't had any problems since.
Only problem for me was, since dd-wrt doesn't offer hardware acceleration, throughput performance was worse. My download speed dropped from ~70Mb/s to less than 60Mb/s. If the router cpu is fast enough, it may not make a difference though.
hmm u didn't mention if u use it and why yes/no
Linus why didn't you do a 30/30/30?
