I have been using dd-wrt for more than 10 years, the first thing I do when I buy a router is install this firmware, I love it
It really is top of the line stuff. Just works great on a ton of hardware.
just installed this on a old TP-link Archer c8 v3. I love it because its makes the router into a super router for more features
It's Awesome for sure!

My dad was a network engineer and we had the Linksys RT54G with extra long antennas my Nintendo DS had wifi from every corner of the house. Dam I feel old.
I'm right there with ya, and I loved the WRT-54G.
You knock out good vids. Yeah DD-wrt is good for getting started in networking and using some older routers. It's where I started and now I'm on pfSense.
Agree. I started with DD-WRT back in 2014. Updates, and their quality, was what stopped me from continuing on with it and subsequently moving to PFSense.
Yep, I'm running OPNSense now, and have 4 Asus routers setup as Access Points around my home feeding from OPNSense. The Asus routers run DD-WRT. I have a video coming Friday (I hope) on how I setup DD-WRT to be an AP / Wireless AP only.
@@AwesomeOpenSource Oh that's cool. Fairly easy to setup, but I think the main problem I had in my house was I couldn't place the router in a good position for wifi, then I switched over to a TP-Link EAP245 AP, as it's PoE I can place it anywhere, the difference in coverage is huge. Though if you have the equipment just lying around installing DD-WRT or OpenWRT is a good little project. LOL I have to admit I have bricked at least 4 routers over the years !
@@neogrid9999 - Fear of bricking a good router makes me go R E A L slow! I love DDWRT but was "curious" about pfSense, so I loaded pfSense on VirtualBox. I can understand the appeal...BUT....I absolutely LOVE having up to 8 SSIDs in ONE wireless APs with separate IP networks built into one dd-wrt router box. Understand you need to move your stand alone AP to a better area, but jeeze, ddwrt really knocks it out of the park for a one-router-box solution. Which "hobbyist grade" APs do you recommend to goof around with pfSense?
@@takakazushi6703 Well I have a TP-Link EAP245, it supports vlans / 8 SSiDs and has two ethernet ports.
Thanks Brian again, another great video. Can you tell me if this software has integration with IP sec or pritunl etc
I don't know that there is or isn't any integration specifically. I know you can setup OpenVPN with DD-WRT, but not sure how it would work specifically with PriTunl.
Curious for you to do a review on OpenWRT. I switched from DD-WRT to OpenWRT after getting frustrated with how long it took them to fix basic bugs. They were often very far behind on fixes from upstream packages. Their Samba version was several years behind what everyone else was using, which was the final reason I switched away.
It's on my list. Maybe in the next couple of months, I hope.
@@AwesomeOpenSource Nice! Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.
@@thardie - are you on any Discourse channel or OpenWRT Forum? Do tell me. Would love to learn a few things about your OpenWRT experience. Getting my feet wet with a GL-iNet WiFi 6 router with OpenWRT. TZ
This is a great recent video. I just wish that dd-wrt also supported wifi 6 (802.11ax) but seems like it doesn't at the moment.
Just give it some time.
Linksys is no longer owned by Cisco. Cisco sold it in 2013 to Belkin. Belkin and subsidiary Linksys were sold to Foxconn in 2018.
Interesting. Wow, shows how little I've kept up with that.
I remember DD wrt, never played with the new one open wrt
DD-WRT is old, but still works great for me. I like OpenWRT, and I've played with it, but it's a bit more finicky on hardware it will work with.
Cisco bought Linksys in 2003, a couple of years after they had released their WiFi routers
Someone else mentioned that as well.
Hello, will this work on generic wifi repeaters? Those mini ones used to just boost signals. Any ideas?
I don't know, but it's always best to look for the hardware in the Router Database I linked in the description.
Just for curiosity what linux flavour are you using for your main device ?
I think when I made this video I was still running Pop_OS on my recording machine. Right now, I'm running Kubuntu 22.04
haven't used it for a decade, well see if ill get it running on some asus routers i just got heheh
Hope it goes well! Let me know.
I had two of those routers. Bricked 2 in a row and was trying to update it with linksys firmware. 😂😂
Really? I'm sorry to hear that but yes, make sure to use the proprer firmware version for the router model...and yes, I've bricked a router in the past by doint the steps incorrectly even with the right firmware. With aobut 5 hours of trying I was able to save it, but it was a pain....so now I try to find some that are just done through updating in the UI.
@@AwesomeOpenSource was back in the day when they’re were new and was laying like $300ea for them. 😂
Hi , is it ok to install Dlink DIR-600 firmware on D-Link DIR600M
Hi , i am having linksys MR9000X model Does it support DDwrt firmware
I use ddwrt and changed my ssid name in setup. Sometimes my windows pc can't decide which ssid to use...the new one or the old one. ?? Any help on this? --thanks do you need to reset the router to factory defaulys before changing the ssid?
If you changed the SSID on dd-wrt, then the old one should be gone. If that's the case, you just need to tell windows to delete that old SSID from it's list of options. Same with MacOS. It will remember it as an SSID that's OK to connect to, so just tell it to forget about it.
@@AwesomeOpenSource hey thanks. not sure I know how to do that in windows -- where do I look? The old name doesn't appear in the network center. Think it was doing that because my signal was weak and it was (maybe) trying to connect to something it had in memory as a second choice? kinda cool but confusing. improved signal doesn't seem to be doing it now.
I'm looking for something (perhaps DD-WRT?) that could implement multiple virtual hidden wireless networks so that untrusted wireless devices connect to a unique SSID + password pair unique to that device's MAC address. I want to prevent an untrusted device from using MAC address spoofing to masquerade as another device and use the same SSID + password as a way to bypass MAC based routing and filtering. Can DD-WRT or something else do that?
You've gone far beyond my knowledge of the project. I would suggest checking their docs and posting on their forum.
Yes, there is a capability to separate trusted from IoT devices - use virtual interfaces
Speaking of their forums, I went through the sign up process and click the submit button and my browser just kept giving me the spinning wheel thing it never completed the sign up.
Hmmmm. You never got a confirmation email or anything?
I bought a refurbished wrt 3200 ACM and found out it had this DD-WRT firmware on it. What a cluster fuck. Anytime you make a change and click the apply button or the save button the screen refreshes to a black screen and you can't access the router for at least three more minutes. It took me all night of screwing around with this thing and I finally said screw it and put the factory firmware on it now it's not booting up at all.
Strange indeed. I would say you might have better luck with OpenWRT on a 3200.
I have used ddwrt since wireless b and having to solder a serial port to install it. Sadly, while it is still very stable and gets regular updates, it really has been left behind by openwrt both in terms of functionality but also device support. Ddwrt supports zero ax routers. I think it's time has come and gone.
I might be. I've also been using it for a couple of decades. It's really great, but indeed OpenWRT seems to be ahead right now.
Hello Brian... Sorry when I ask you again. I use Dd-wrt Long Time... To come to the webui I use nginx Reverse Proxy Script. This is working. But with nginx Proxy Manager Not. Have you some settings for IT ?
Just depending on what you're doing in your firewall. You want to port forward ports 80 and 443 to your NGinX Proxy Manager host machine IP. Then use NGinX Proxy Manager to point traffic to your different services inside the LAN.
@@AwesomeOpenSource I startet my router again. Now NPM is running well for dd-wrt webgui. 😆
I have a iBall router seems there are no firmware for it
I'm sorry to hear that, but perhaps in time, you can look for a used one on eBay or similar site that is supported.
Update. Apparently the database is no longer being supported or updated. If you go to the Forum or the Wiki you will find that they NO LONGER recommend using the database. I have no idea why.
I haven't found that. Interesting. I find plenty of semi-recent information on the database.
@@AwesomeOpenSource I don't know what the inside story is.
I'm glad you and a few others posted this. I went looking and did indeed find a newer version for my routers on the wiki. So strange that they wouldn't keep the db up to date, but maybe it was just too hard to maintain.
@@AwesomeOpenSource I don't know what the inside story is. I actually had trouble with the Jan2023 version and backed up to using the Dec2022 version, but the database only went up to Nov2020.
The website its not working :(
Can u give new link
The dd-wrt website?
@@AwesomeOpenSource
Yeah its not working with me idk why wrong website
Is it a thing anymore?
Of course. Adding new routers all the time. Very active.
Dd-wrt is open source? Since when?
From dd-wrt.com "DD-WRT is a Linux based alternative OpenSource firmware suitable for a great variety of WLAN routers and embedded systems." Not sure since when.
Since its inception...
DD-WRT is not entirely open source.
Yes, they have deals for closed source firmware in order to work better with Broadcom chipsets for sure.
@@AwesomeOpenSource I also prefer OpenWrt.
TIL, people still use DD-WRT? Wow. I mean it was great back in the day for sure but after OpenWRT you kinda don't want to go back.
Indeed, OpenWRT is also great stuff, but definitely fewer devices supported on OpenWRT, so DD-WRT still has a place in the line up.
OpenWRT also doesn't support 4mb routers anymore. So with devices that old, DD-WRT is still needed.
Works great with Netgear_R67000v3
Nice!
